(I received this as a gift from a friend who thought it was a perspective platformer.)

This is pretentious garbage.

There are two types of puzzles in here. The perspective-switching puzzles, which are agonizingly easy and a waste fo time after your first ten to fifteen minutes, unless you are incapable of working in three dimensional space.

Then their first genius idea is 'what if we had invisible platforms that you could barely see, but for flashes of lightning and a very subtle particle effect!'

To be clear, the platforming controls are literal garbage. They're floaty, they're imprecise, and the edge-grabbing is a joke.

There are no 'medium' quality puzzles. Either it's baby-easy perspective games, which after your first twenty minutes should be so painfully easy that you need to be literally blackout drunk not to understand, or things like 'So we've hidden clues that there is a secret alphabet and numerical system somewhere, and you can determine the numerical system (By the way, there are multiple icons for each given number, because Phil Fish is pretentious and wants to look more clever than mere substitution), and then proceed to memorize a series of button combinations that happen to be on a wall in a single room for later.

So, basically, FEZ is two games. It's an ARG, which I didn't really want in the first place, and a super easy platformer with a repetitive gimmick that feels boring after the first twenty minutes.

This game is a masterpiece. It should be near the top of every puzzle fanatics list. The puzzles are incredible, the secrets are incredible, and the sheer amount of puzzles and secrets crammed into this game is incredible. It draws you in and makes it impossible for you to stop. Just buy it, you won't regret it! 10/10

Even though this is a platforming game, it's mainly a puzzle, and a really hard one if you intend to complete 100%.

Liked:
Gourgeous pixelated art style, detailed, colorful, polished
Great level design and a new paradigm
Sense of reward
Game's world and its philosophical instigation

Disliked:
Doesn't make clear when you can´t solve a puzzle yet
Map structure, orientation and quick traveling are knotty
Alphabet's transferal is complex to solve (the hints should have helped more) and burdensome to execute

Dropping a 2D person in a 3D space has a greater effect than simply adding a new set of directions to move in. Perspective is locked to two dimensions, so in shifting that perspective, things line up differently and can then be used differently. Adjusting platforms to be closer together is just the beginning; anything that's lined up is now part of the same plane making ladders twice as tall when combined or gaps in one area into portals for the next. This versatility makes bouncing around the enchanting and oddly disconnected world, solving puzzles here and there, a real joy. As long as you can keep momentum, that is. The second you collect enough cubes that you can no longer afford to skip any puzzle you don't like, however, it all breaks down. Many of Fez's secrets are beyond obtuse, requiring the translation of alien languages and the deciphering of painfully silent clues. More than a few of these solutions come down to inputting codes meant only to test the fact that you understand said languages, which isn't a satisfying way to end that much work. On top of this, Fez is surprisingly glitch ridden for such a mechanically simple game. It's tedious enough dashing through areas to look for new clues for solving the larger puzzles without having to reset the game constantly due to Gomez forgetting how grab onto vines or jump down from ledges, or just plain freezing in place. If you can play Fez and enjoy the experience without needing to finish it or you enjoy buckling down with long, sophisticated challenges, pick this game up. If that doesn't sound like your cup of tea, it would be best to look elsewhere.

To be honest, I really was looking forward to playing this game and enjoying it for it's undeniably outstanding atmosphere and art style. However unfortunately, I found myself staring at some glaring game drawbacks that I really think greatly ruined the entire overall experience.

1. Progression
I'm afraid there simply is none. Sure the ability to change the world perspective is neat and intriguing, however, when that soon becomes the only real game mechanic you have, it quickly becomes a bit tiring, repetitive, and boring, with me desperately craving for some sort of variation. I had greatly hoped that the 4 relics you collected in the game might have unlocked new useful powers for my character, but to my misfortune, they all did absolutely nothing.

2. The Ending
While I'm usually not too picky about a game's ending, I found Fez's ending incredibly dissapointing and confusing, spectacular artistic visuals and music aside. I'm not going to spoil the ending for you because I simply can't, but I feel it is just an incredibly jarring and unsatisfying note to end your experience on. Oh and yes, I am referring to the game's standard ending, the one that about 99% of players will obtain, as the true ending, which admitedlly I think has pretty much the same drawbacks as the first ending, is essentially impossible to obtain without cheating. Speaking of which,

3. 200% Completion
As we all know, FEZ is supposed to be a game full of puzzles. Unfortunately, said puzzles are practically impossible to solve without looking up on the internet, as they range from typing in bizzare keyboard codes out of nowhere to open doors, to randomly hitting the sides of a bell numerous times, things far too cheap and insanely difficult for anyone to ever naturally solve on their own. And yes, if you want the true ending, you do need to obtain 200% completion by solving every puzzle and obtaining everything within the game.

4. Maps
They simply didn't work properly on my computer due to some sort of bug or something, with all of them appearing as black sheets of paper. Not exactly helpful when they provide crutial hints to certain portions of the game.

Overall, I may not be the most artistic visionary in the world, and it could be completely possible that I missed out on a lot of hidden meanings and values present within the entire game and it's endings. However, from my basic casual gamer perspective, I overall wouldn't really recommend this game as a must have, or classic puzzle experience, only as a game that I'd suggest purchasing when on sale for it's shear phenomenal design.

A INSANE WASTE OF TIME!!!!!!!!!!!. It takes so much time to win and the endings SUCK. Phil Fish, thanks for the cheap endings. Thank god I didn't waste more time on this. I will say though, it's music & graphics are AMAZING and extremely worthy of all the praise they recieive but the endings suck so badly that the time spent getting there is ludecrous.

I'm gonna start this review off by saying this game is not for everyone. Some people might find this game too hard or challenging. Some people might not like puzzle games. So if you might be one of those people, then you probably won't like this game.

Now then, let me start off this review by saying, HOLY FLIPPING CHEESE NUTS IS THIS GAME GOOD. I mean, it won awards for a reason you know. The puzzles in this game will drive you insane, in a good way. This game is so hard that there is one puzzle that has NEVER BEEN SOLVED. I had to look up a walkthrough to finish this game, and if you are thinking of giving up, I strongly encourage you not to until you are absoloutly stuck.

If the puzzles weren't enough to make you want to spend all your money to buy you and all your friends this gem of a game, you should know that the visuals are FRICKIN AMAZING LOOKING and that whoever worked on this game should have screenshots of FEZ put up in an art museum or sold for billions at auctions.

Then there are the game mechanics. And yeah, jumping and pushing switches is cool, but JESUS CHRIST CAN YOU BELIEVE NAVIGATING A 2D GAME IN 3D. IT WORKS SO DANG WELL. This kind of platforming is only spoken about in legend you guys it's amazing

And now for the plot, yeah I know what you're thinking. How can such a simple platformer have a plot? And to that I must say, ARE YOU SERIOUS BRO, IN THIS GAME YOU CAN COLLECT THE BROKEN PARTS OF A GIANT HEXEHEDRON WHO SPEAKS A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE YOU CAN COMPREHEND THE MEANING OF THE UNIVERSE HECK YOU CAN EVEN TRANSLATE A BOOK FULL OF HAIKUS FROM DEAD ALIENS WHO BUILT STAR GATES AND SHRINES ON FLOATING ISLANDS ON TOP OF THE CLOUDS

Then there is the music. If the fact that this game's OST was developed by Disasterpiece wasn't enough to make you want to spend $ 7.00 so you can play it to yourself while you need creative inspiration. I have to say this soundtrack IS LIKE HAVING A SYMPHONY OF PIXELATED ANGELS SING INTO YOUR EARS.

In all seriousness guys, this game had me hooked for a long time, and I just couldn't think about anything else until I finished it. You may not love this game as much as I do, but just know that when I first started playing this game, I grew bored with it, until I started to understand what was happening, then I loved it. I strongly urge you to give this game a try, and I hope if you are reading this review you are moved to buy it.

FEZ is a fantastic game with a sense of whimsy that's rarely seen in modern platformers. Decoding the puzzles and related items is both fun and challenging, and while I didn't manage to 100% complete the game, attempting to do so was wonderful.

The music, by Disasterpiece, is catchy, memorable, and just plain great. I highly recommend this game to those who like to explore, platform their way through themed areas and levels, and search for rewards in unexpected places.

This game is a Classic hands down. I have played many games but I am hooked on this one . A relaxing fibe and sense of meaningful connection is the feeing Fez brings that other games dont . The story , art and music are all unique . I take my hat off to Phil Fish just amazing work . All in all I would say I enjoy Fez and give it a 9 out of 10 score .

If you like a puzzle game that requires a notebook, you can't get much better than this. Fez is one of my favorite games ever. It's smart, complex, adorable, and full of hours of fun gameplay.

Look I'm not going to lie. I don't even know where to begin. This game was so fun to explore and so creative. It made me feel so calmed and the concept of the game still amazes me to today.
But, cut the bullpoop, mate. This game was impossible to complete 200% without internet/exterior help. What the heck where you thinking? "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog"? Wait for hours/days until the damn clock gives 12 o'clock (plus that terrible pun wasn't even creative)? Are you frigging kidding me?!
Dude this was so horrible at first because I really felt commited to the game and I suddenly couldn't solve it myself!
But you know what made me feel REALLY MAD? Those MOTHERFUGGERS fork-shaped pillars!!! Why, oh WHY would you make a game that can be played on a computer WITHOUT a controller, if there are several important anti-cube puzzels that are suppoused to be solved with the vibration of the player's controller?
I don't even know what to think of this game anymore. It is cute. It has brilliant animations and amazing sound and surroundings. The puzzles tho. I don't consider them puzzles. I don't even understand how would the dev think those were a good idea.

I'll start off by saying that FEZ is sort of a love/hate game. It's definitely not for everyone, but I still think it's worth trying out.

To get the bad out of the way, there are quite a few extremely, EXTREMELY cryptic puzzles in the game. I won't lie, I resorted to using guides for most of them, as I lack the patience for this kind of stuff, but if you're someone who refuses to use guides, prepare to get a pen and paper, and put on your thinking cap. Some of the puzzles just feel overly cryptic, and you have to do a lot of brainstorming, experimenting, and trial and error to solve them.

That's honestly my only real complaint with the game. The world and art style of the game are very charming and nostalgic in a way, and the soundtrack is amazing. The 3D world rotation mechanic that the game is built around works well, and is very fun to play around with.

If you're a fan of puzzle platformers, I'd highly recommend the game.

少し無駄なことではありますが、これでこのゲームの魅力の半分は分かるでしょうから。


平面→立方体
この作品、アクション要素を取り入れたパズルゲームとなっており、世界中に散らばったキューブの欠片を集めていくことが目的となっています
それだけであればごく普通のゲームなのですが、ある一つのギミックがこの作品をオリジナリティ溢れる作品に変えています。キューブを集めて完成させる、と言う目的からも感じ取れますが、この作品は立方体のように世界を回転させることが出来ます
残念ながら縦方向には回すことが出来ませんが、一つの画面で4つの見方が出来るため、
いろいろな視点から見る事が重要となっています
この手法によって2Dのレトロなゲーム画面が、擬似3Dの立体的な画面となってゲームを奥深くしています

癒やされるゲームの世界・挙動
このゲーム、可愛らしい外見どおり、こちらに全身全霊を持って可愛さを伝えてきます
主人公の挙動はかなり愛らしく、一生懸命走って歩いて先に進もうとしたり、重たい持ち物を懸命に持ち上げてみたり。SEの選択も絶妙なため、ストレス社会に疲れた一時、ただなんとなくゲーム内を散歩するだけでも
十分価値があるような気がします
若干操作性が独特なため、通常であればストレス増加に繋がる要素にしかならないのですが、行動モーションをこだわることでカバーしているのは個人的に見事だと思わされました
やられモーションも地味に種類が多いので、余裕がある時は気まぐれに高い所からダイブしたり爆弾に巻き込まれたりしてみて下さい
若干良心は痛みますが。

ゲームから現実へ。現実からゲームへ
最近では必需品となった携帯ですが、この作品にはギミックの一つに携帯電話を必要とする場面が有ります
完全攻略する必要がなければスルーしても構いませんが、ゲーム内にあるQRコードを読み込むことでコマンドが携帯に現れます。そのコマンドを入力することにより、更にゲーム内でアクションが発生します
色々な手法でプレイヤーを飽きさせない工夫は、パズルゲームとして十分褒めたくなる要素ではないでしょうか

総評
ここまで特に気になる点なども書きませんでしたが、それだけオススメできるゲームとなっております
セール時は大体8割引きで購入できるので、残高が余っている時には
のんびりこのゲームでまったりとしてみてはいかがでしょう?

知らなければ、可愛いだけで済んでいた
綺麗な花にはなんとやら。勿論このゲームも例外ではありません
このゲーム、様々な場所に幾何学模様が描かれてあり雰囲気作りに一役買っているのですが
残念な事にこの模様、意味があります
もう解読自体はされているのでwiki等を見ればいいのですが、模様一つ一つがアルファベット及び数字に対応しています
一応ゲーム内で理解するためのヒントはあるのですが、海外の言葉遊びを元に作られているため日本人には馴染みがなく、さらに言えば背景に書かれているため、相当な観察眼がなければスルー濃厚です
数字に至っては、一つの数字に2つ記号が対応している物があるため、アタリを付けて探すのも困難です

積み重なっていくフラグ・マップ・そして処理
上部で軽く説明しましたが、この作品かなりマップが膨大になっています
最初の内は探索域も狭いため、どこから来たか、どこへ行くか見当をつけやすいのですが、中盤以降は奥に行きすぎて自分が今どこにいるのか、またどうやって戻るか等解りづらくなります
一応マップ自体はあるのですが、広すぎてどこに手を付けていないか探すのも大変だったり、そもそもその場所に行くのにも手間が必要で自分の頭の処理も大変なことになっていきます
一応ワープゾーンとなる装置もあるのですが、一方通行であったり何処に繋がっているのか
忘れてしまったりで二度手間も少なくありません
追い打ちをかけるように、マップが広くなるとその全てのフラグを処理しつつゲームが進行していく関係上、
どうしてもゲーム自体が重くなっていきます
広大なマップ故にしょうがないと思う反面、幾つかのグループで処理を区切って軽く出来なかったのかなー、と思ったり

最後に
表面だけで捉えてはいけない。いろいろな視点、ギミックを通じて物事を多角的に見てみよう
そんな少し説教めいた感じの物を少し残してくれたゲームでした
完全クリアを一人で目指す場合、膨大な時間と思考力をこのゲームには要求されますが、軽く遊んでみる程度だったら凄く遊びやすいゲームでもあると思うのです
今は攻略なども充実しているので、それを見ながらでもいいですし、自分の思うとおりにプレイしてもらいたい。そんなゲームです
あまりムキになって遊ぶのではなく、まったりのんびり、心に余裕を持って、是非プレイしてみてはいかがでしょう

どうしても熱中しすぎてストレスになってしまう方がいるのであれば、どうかこの一言をポジティブに捉えて欲しい

I really wanted to like this game. And there are a lot of things I do like, unfortunately the negative aspects outweigh the positives.

I enjoyed the art style and the whole rotating the world to abuse the perspective mechanic...

But I found many of the puzzles you need to solve for the anti-cubes to be poorly introduced and "too hidden". The game should introduce the mechanisms you need to use to solve the puzzle, and then present you with harder and harder puzzles... not hide the mechanisms. Hidden mechanisms are frustrating, not challenging.

Case in point: I spent a lot of time in an area trying to figure out what the hell I needed to do before resorting to Google for a solution... only to find out I needed to have headphones on... Seriously? The game couldn't have used high/low pitched sounds to represent left/right instead of having the same sound play on the left and right channels?

Combined with all the backtracking that is required made this a very frustrating game to play through.

Oh god I waited too much for making this review, this game is one of the BEST GAMES that ever existed in the world is perfect, and is made for it, I know, I know that haters made the creator stop making the sequel, stupid haters, but this game is practically one of the best games and you cant complain it.

Such a poetic and nice game... Also very innovative as a plateformer, at least for the level design : it makes your brain think in some king of a 4 dimmensionnal space, really impressive game !

If you like old school plateformers and wich it would have go on until now, this game is for you : it's the natural following of how a plateformer should be !

This game is just brilliant. Combines 2d, 3d, platformer and puzzler with polished graphics and cute story. Difficulty is just right to keep you guessing and it's great fun to play. Definitely worth the asking price.

 不思議なトルコ帽を被ったら、これまで見ていた景色どころか次元まで変わっちゃった。そんなパズルゲーム。

 主人公Gomezくんを軸に、回転ラックをぐるぐる回すように視点を変え、見えなかった足場や仕掛けをつなげていく操作はとても斬新。
あわせて、あたたかみのあるドット絵の世界が見事にマッチ。

 8-bitライクな壮大で、哀愁のあるBGMもおすすめ。(サントラはもちろん、様々なアーティストによるリミックス集も必聴!)

しかし、このゲームの根幹である謎解き・物語はともに難解な印象。
 スマホでQRコードを読み込んで謎解き、なんて場面も。すべてのアイテムを収集するなら攻略wikiは必須。
 特に物語には はっきりと提示されたテーマが見当たらず、エンディングに至っても前衛的すぎてなんじゃこりゃ感が。
そのぶん考察が楽しいかもです。

 ふと思い出してはプレイしたくなるゲーム。レトロなのにモダンな雰囲気が癖になります。

FEZ is a very interesting game with great perception challenge. Twist the world to the way you see fit or get an angle to a certain door of piece. one that would seem out of reach but to the bending dimensions of Gomez it could become the literal stepping stone to your goal.

BE WARNED! There is no hand holding. you get around by experimenting with the controls and the world by yourself. Its there... you just need to find it.

The aesthetic is quite breathtaking for what everything is made of. The contrast of colors and enviroments really gives a sense of beauty to the world.

This game bring back memories of old school adventure games. You are thrust out into an unknown world- Now Explore it!

IMHO- 8/10 recomended

I Really Wanted To Enjoy This

I want to start by saying that none of the following has anything to do with the people who created it, gaming politics, or the delays that plagued this game before its release. I don't care about any of that. I just wanted to review this game based on my experiences with it and that's what I'm going to do.

Things that I liked
  • The gimmick is a great, creative idea.
    The idea that you have a somewhat traditional 2d side-scrolling platformer game where you can rotate the camera 90 degrees to abuse third dimensional space from a second dimensional prespective is genius. To that end, the game is loaded with all sorts of fun ways to use this gimmick in a way that just feels good. Many of the puzzles are well thought out, and the more challenging ones really do make the player feel smart for having mastered this new perspective.
  • The gameplay feels really good.
    One of the best parts of this game is the player's mobility. You can run, jump, climb, hang off of ledges, shimmy around ledges, pick things up, throw things, turn wheels with the perspective shift, and shift perspective in mid jump. All of this feels really good and makes the gameplay smooth. Nothing feels terribly floaty and the camera borders and jump height/distance were never an issue.
  • The graphics are nice to look at.
    This was one of the things that really got me wanting to play the game in the first place. The game has great color schemes in every area, dynamic skies that change based on your elevation in a level, and creatively decorated tilesets. Most environments are littered with animated NPC wildlife who frolick despite the player's intrusions and the game just has a ton of character in its art style. Things look especially good when the pixel art is translated to voxel art during the brief moments where the world rotates to a new perspective.
  • The game is mostly laid back, allowing you to take things in at your own pace.
    FEZ allows the player to explore the world with little limitation other than occasional gates which require collected items before the player can pass. Many of the best finds in the game are shortcuts which make traversing areas much faster. Death is also rarely an issue and will usually only put the player back on the last static platform they were standing on, making the game relatively low stakes.

Things that I didn't like so much
  • The game is very glitchy
    I'm not going to act like we should expect an experimental style of game like this to be devoid of any kinds of bugs or glitches. However, this game has bugs and glitches often enough that it really does become distracting. Not only this, but during some segments where the game actually finally grows a difficulty with stakes I'll often find myself sent to the beginning of the segment due to glitches caused by moving platforms, the perspective shifting feature, or interactive elements that decide to start propelling the player in odd directions once they're touched. More than once this also rendered a segment unbeatable, requiring me to restart the area or the game. This also prompted at least one rage quit after being repeatedly sent to the beginning of a timed platforming segment due to glitchy platforms.
  • The game drags in areas that it really shouldn't
    This is really upsetting to me. One of the biggest draws for getting this game is getting to explore a colorful, populated, fascinating pixel world packed to the brim with lots of character. And most of the time the game fulfills that! However, I often find myself spending lots of time travelling through very samey looking environments in a particular area which offer multiple versions of the same puzzle (which sometimes waaay overstay their welcome, such as during a particular sewer segment or another segment with invisible platforms). During these parts of the game I found myself extremely bored with no idea how long I would be stuck scouring the area until I could deem it completed so I could move on. Perhaps it would have been better for me to leave the area once it got boring and come back later, but then that would have meant that I would need to spend time...
  • Backtracking
    In a Metroidvania style game backtracking is a given. However, this isn't a Metroidvania style game. What makes backtracking work in those games is that the environments that you backtrack through are transformed by the player's new abilities (ie; a pit of lava with a monster in it may be deadly at first, but with an ice beam the monster becomes a platform). FEZ does none of this. So far as I know the player never actually gets any new powers and spends the entire game with the same set of platforming skills. The unique things that he can do are contextual to the level and can't really be taken backwards through the game. Instead, backtracking is just a matter of finding a key or object which acts like a key and then checking your map to route the fastest way to jump through familiar environments back to the door you need to open. It makes parts of the game that were once fun and interesting stale. It isn't playing through the levels with new eyes, it's just repeating the same gameplay in a way that feels like a waste of time.

As a whole, FEZ is a flawed execution of a lot of good ideas. The platforming is smooth, but is marred by glitches which can ruin the flow. The concept is great, but the novelty wears off fast through repetitve backtracking and multiple versions of samey puzzles. The graphics are great but the real gems are spread out through giant mazes of platforming puzzles which look nearly identical to the ones before them. The game is frustrating for the thought of what it could have been if time were spent polishing it rather than constantly trying to build upon it. It has its moments, but they're spaced out by monotonous and occasionally frustrating space inbetween. The sloppiness of its execution brings to mind the genius concepts and lackluster execution of Flash browser games from the mid 2000's.

I would value this game at anywhere between $4.00 to $6.00 USD if you're really curious about it. There's certainly moments that can make the game worth your money, but overall it works best as a time waster. Feels like it would work so much better on mobile than on computers so a player could whip out their phone between classes and make incremental progress.

I can't recommend it myself. There's certainly elements here that have tons of potential but I don't see that they're given proper opportunity to shine.
