These changes have now been pushed to the stable branch, along with a few other small fixes. Enjoy!

It’s been a busy week and a half since our last bugfix update. While the artists have been forging ahead on content for the next major patch, we programmers have been going through lots of user feedback, stomping out bugs, and cleaning up a few annoying problems that have been on the To Do list for too long.

  • Crafting and inventory windows can be closed by pressing the key or activating the object that opened them
  • Crafting (and other interfaces) close when you are no longer near the object
  • Interacting with objects now requires the player have line of sight to them.
  • This means that you cannot sit in chairs, flip switches, or use crafting stations through walls.
  • Add race-specific craftable storage lockers, accessible from the Robotic Crafting Table.
  • Fix bug with Erchius Horror causing beams to deal damage in areas different from the visual beam positions
  • Fix bugs with Targeted Blink which allowed blinking through walls and could result in players being thrown outside of the world. Any characters previously broken by this bug should be usable again.
  • Fix bugs with server banlist functionality
  • Fix ‘Not allowed to discard stack when locked’ crash when moving items to/from containers
  • Fix bug causing servers not to display error messages for some crashes
  • Support user specific username/password login for servers
  • Bow tooltips now display damage and energy cost
  • Container tooltips now display storage capacity
  • Penguin Bay will now tell players to come back later if no quests are available
  • Most beds allow players to sleep more comfortably, without armor
  • More changes to human armor designs, some old designs now available as cosmetic items
  • Capes now craftable on spinning wheel
  • Foods that poison/burn you won’t do so for as long

Huge winter update!



The huge winter update is here!

After many months of work the winter update has finally been released. It contains more changes than we can list but below are some of the most obvious updates.

  • ***Universe and Worlds***
  • Sectors have been removed, so all stars are part of the same map
  • Star and planet types correspond to difficulty levels, giving players access to progressively more extreme environments as they advance through the game
  • Added oceanic world types including tropical and arctic oceans, toxic and magma planets
  • Added rare Barren and Asteroid worlds with no monsters for large scale building
  • New biomes
  • New surface and underground mini biomes
  • Many changes to surface and underground terrain generation
  • Improvements to background parallaxes and sky coloration
  • ***Ships and Navigation***
  • Player ships now include an AI avatar specific to each race that gives access to the player’s techs, missions, 3D printer, and a variety of ship-related commands
  • Each race’s ship has its own unique set of upgrades, giving players much more room to expand as they progress
  • Fuel costs for travel have been reworked. Moving between planets within a system is now free, while jumps to other systems require fuel in proportion to the distance traveled.
  • Coal no longer powers spaceships! Instead, they can use either radioactive ores or the new Liquid Erchius Fuel that now appears in Moon biomes
  • Many improvements to the Cockpit interface, which now indicates more detailed planet information including weather and environmental hazards
  • ***Outpost***
  • The universe now has a civilized hub containing shops, quests, and other services. This is where players will find quests, missions, and ship upgrades which allow them to advance through the game
  • Includes a Sign Store based on the popular custom signs mod, where players can design and print their own signage for use in game
  • ***Missions***
  • At key points in the progression, players will unlock special Missions
  • Missions take place in unique instanced dungeons containing special monsters, bosses, and rewards not available anywhere else
  • Some missions can be quite difficult, so you’ll want to prepare carefully - or bring friends!

  • Unique progression of craftable guns
  • Unique progression of armor sets
  • Unique progression of ship upgrades

  • Techs are now split into head, body, legs and suit slots, so you can equip up to four at once!

  • Suit techs provide passive protection from specific environmental hazards
  • New tech unlocking system makes a variety of techs visible each time the player upgrades their ship. The player can then use Blank Tech Cards to unlock and equip these techs

  • Matter Manipulator can now be upgraded over the course of the game to increase its mining power, area of effect, and allow it to collect liquids as well as blocks

Despite still being in Early Access, Starbound is my favorite game in sandbox exploration/building genre.

In comparison with Terraria (which I expect most people at least heard of), Starbound puts much stronger focus on exploration rather than fighting. Rather than adventuring in a single world, in Starbound you travel between different planets each not only belonging to a particular biome, but containing some of unique features from a fairly large list, from peaceful villages to dungeons filled with zealous guards. So you never know what you will find on each new planet you visit, which makes exploration very addictive: you will always want to explore “just one more planet”!

In terms of combat and other game mechanics, Starbound already has pretty solid core mechanics at this point of development, though they keep being tweaked and some core mechanics may still change in the future.

In short, I fully recommend Starbound to anyone who likes sandbox games or want to give this genre a try. And don’t be put off by it being in Early Access – Starbound is already perfectly playable and fun at this point of development.

Recent update greatly improved overall perfomance, so now even on my system it runs smooth. Those who abandoned game because of that - give it another try.
Those who are unfamiliar with Starbound - if you like games like this, give it a try.

This game is really really fun. It has a long progression time, meaning you have LOTS of time before you reach end tier gameplay, which is awesome. As it is I think it is a very fun game...

However, and this isn't in my personal opinion enough to not recommend the game, the updates are really slow. New content is released in unstable builds quite regularly, but it's not necessarily "big" updates.

I took a break well over a half a year year ago since playing the game back when it first came out. When it first arrived the game was quite bland, with abusable bosses, and the only progression being "mine ore, fight boss, craft crafting bench, mine ore, fight boss, craft crafting bench, etc. etc.", although the atmosphere was (and still is) quite amazing.

Now in the new "big winter update" version, it's a heck of a lot better, with a ship you upgrade over time, an interesting active ability system, quests, dungeons, mini dungeons, and a fairly well paced progression system, among countless other fun things. I remember getting a good number of friends on my server with different instruments, and we all got together in a band and played a song, and it was pretty cool. There's a lot of possibilities to explore with what's provided.

For the building oriented players, I don't think it's quite on the level of games like terraria and minecraft, however the addition of wiring and futristic technology, along with lots of tile sets can allow for some pretty interesting building design. The game is certainly more combat oriented than it is building oriented.

I mean all in all, it's a pretty cool game, just keep in mind if you want a massive universe full of amazing discoveries and an MMO style experience, where you can run into other people on other planets, or if you want more than repeated structures and naturally generated terrain to find as you explore new planets, that's not in the game yet, and given the current pace, it's going to be a long long time before that goal is reached.

Recommendation: Skim a few youtube videos and watch a few trailers. If you think you'd like the game in it's current state, buy it now, have some good fun, and then put it off to the side for a while and come back later when it's more updated. It'll be the gift that keeps on giving. If you don't like it in it's current state, but like the planned features, you might have to wait a good while for those, but I would recommend you go through with that wait, since you never know what might happen to the development before those features arrive.

Starbound, hailed as Terraria 2.0 or Terraria in Space.

Edit: To the people downvoting this review; read my review before you judge it. I share the same issues most "negative reviewers" do, but I have had more than 200+ hours of gameplay from this game, and so have most of the "negative reviewers" as well, and for an Early Access game, that is pretty good, is it not? Despite it's flaws. So before you blindly judge it based off slow development, read the following:

I have waited with reviewing this game until they posted more updates, but have owned it since it was released to the public - and had 200+ hours within the first 2-3 months of the game being released, a lot of those due to mods, but the game is coming around now on its own as well, adding a lot of the features mods used to.

If you loved Terraria, you will love this, no questions asked, just get Starbound and play it. If you never played Terraria, well ask yourself this:

Does exploring space in your own spaceship, in a 2D pixelated universe sound amazing? Does building cool space-bases throughout various random planets sound fun? Does exploring the universe and digging to the planets cores sound daring enough for ya'? If that is the case, then Starbound might just be for you.

While I will recommend this game, I do have some minor (and I STRESS "minor", because I do love Starbound) issues that I am not fond of. The developer of the game promised large updates frequently, however, since it released 1 year and 2 months ago, there has been approximately 4 "decent" updates to the game - which have added a proper amount of content to the game. Starbound still has quite a ways to go before it should be considered a full game. And while I understand the quarrels of coding and programming, the actual design part of adding new blocks, biomes, monsters (although monsters are plenty as it is), items, weapons, etc. is not that hard in a 2D pixel game, and some of the updates focused heavily on adding only these (a lot of cosmetic stuff like hats), with minor additions to other parts of the game.

And just to make a note, if that previous paragraph bummed anyone out too much - I will repeat, I do recommend this game, and in the first 2-3 months of the game being out I played 200+ hours with plenty of fun and shenanigans. And I am eagerly awaiting the day Starbound is released as a full game. Starbound has a great future, and definitely has a lot of hours worth of content now (which is more than most Early Access games), and additionally there is a plethora of mods that will give you even more play-time.

So yes, I would recommend Starbound in a heartbeat.

Plus, the Winter Update just added Llamas in Space!

Starbound is a game that reminds me of Terraria. [Reminds most of us].
I'm not a big fan of Terraria, so I'm not a big fan of Starbound either. The graphics are nice, the worlds are great, there is alot of Monsters that you can find on your way to the objective. You can choose a race you can play, her/his body and more options. This is very fun if you like Terraria, but since I'm not a big fan of pixely-like games, I wasn't really enjoying much.

If you have a choice to buy this game or not, buy it. But if you don't like Terraria or Minecraft, don't buy this :o

Its taken a long time, but this game is finally starting to be worth it.

Long ago, in the age of myths, Starbound was first conceptualized as Terraria in space. Everyone rightly thought that that sounded like the best idea ever, and gave Chucklefish all of their money through an in-house version of kickstarter. In return for giving Chucklefish all of our money, they would throw in some more features into their game which would be out "soon". Fast forward to the present day and we've got one of those promised bonuses, sorta. (Novakids are finally in the game, but they're lacking some features of the other races)

I'm finally reviewing because the recent update has made the game feel like something approaching what could be called a full release. My rule on Early Access Games is don't buy unless you are happy with the game as is, and if the game would still be good if the devs all vanished over night. I don't know how many more features the devs plan to implement, but Starbound now has enough in it to be considered good.

The quest system is a welcome addition, particularly in how it functions as a tutorial through the early parts of the game. Unlike every other open world crafting game, you're not just dropped into the world and told only to "figure it out" with no direction. This can be both a good and or bad thing depending on how you see things. This is because certain quests serve as "checkpoints" to the open-ness of the world. For example, you're not getting off the starting world until you do a certain amount of mining and exploring. The game opens up more after that, but once again this is something you're likely to see as either good for slowly easing you into the world or bad for keeping you from just going hog wild in exploration of the galaxy. You're also not going to survive on certain planets unless you get your hands on suit upgrades that you're only going to get from certain quests.

As it stands, I think the whole quest system could use some work in that exploration of the sandbox is restricted by whether or not you have done certain quests to obtain upgrades needed to survive more than a few seconds in certain environments. I found myself more accepting of this once I stopped thinking of Starbound as "2D Minecraft in space" and as a game that placed more emphasis on the Metroidvania aspect. There is a decent variety of quets available, though there could stand to be more.

One thing I do love that more open world crafting games could stand to copy is your ship. In most open world crafting games, I'm reluctant to "settle down" and build anything greater than a mud hut for a base as I'm going to be spending most of my time out in the world, gathering resources or exploring. Starbound solves this by giving you a ship (whose size you can upgrade) to customize to your heart's content. It really lets you have the best of both worlds, as you can still go out and explore every planet and moon in the galaxy, yet as long as you're above ground you can easily beam back up to your base of operations.

Starbound still needs some work, and it shows, but as it stands now it has enough in it to keep you busy long enough to justify the price. Further updates can hopefully turn this from being just a "good" game into a great game.

For any of you fans of Terraria who thought that being restricted to just one world was not enough, Starbound will be your personal wet dream. For a beta it is surprisingly feature complete, I've already played over 200 hours and gotten my fair $15 worth of enjoyment out of it. The fact that they still plan to keep adding content is just icing on the cake. My one piece of advice? Try to be patient, the updates come on long intervals and the devs like to promise a lot. Given the recent controversy over Godus and early access in general, it's a good idea to avoid the hype train and enjoy this game for what it is now. Sure, the promises made by the devs sound amazing, but my own personal policy for how to judge a game is to ask "Is it worth its current asking price in the current state it's in right this moment?" Some games fail this litmus test, but Starbound definitely passes with flying colors. If you like creative building games, you'll love this.

At first I thought this game was great. I am very unhappy with it since cold / temperature was removed along with food / hunger. This is a game for someone who is casual and just wants to have mindless fun. Not bad I supose but theres no challenge, and sometimes people find challenges fun. I find it hard to truly recommend Starbound. Is it fun? Definitely, and the update really brought a lot to the table. But the game really boils down to;
  1. Go to new planet.
  2. Dig down to mine new ore.
  3. Craft new armor.
  4. Get new mission.
  5. Beat mission.
  6. Get new tech to survive harder planets.
  7. Repeat
I found myself painfully aware of this scheme after doing it for the third time. While many games do boil down to repitious tasks, this game did little to hide that fact.

I've been to roughly 20 or more planets since the update, and while they all look different they feel very, very similar. The same goes for the beasts. I don't believe I've run into the same mob the entire playthrough, yet I feel I'm fighting the same creature every time.

This fact greatly lends itself to the overall repetitive feeling the game portrays. All I'm saying is don't hand me an apple you just painted purple, and tell me it's different from the apple you just handed me five minutes ago.

Another point of contention I have is the insane amount of items in the game, many of which do absolutely nothing. I found myself constantly visiting wiki sites to cross reference the item for crafting/building purposes only to find that it is what it is and nothing more. For a game that seems to center around crafting, there are way too many "found" items that, to me, take away from the crafting aspect. Maybe in a future update the items will have some further purpose, but for now it seems as if the devs are spending way to much time making new sprites and not enough time programming. <--Haha

Enough negative though. The game, overall, is actually very enjoyable if you can look past the repetitive nature of the game in it's current state. Exploring is fun. Picking out random planets of the vast cosmos of star systems is exciting. Employing different fighting styles out of the numerous weapons/guns you will find feels purposeful, and always changing depending on the enemy you are fighting. By that I refer to npc enemies, not beasts, whom you will tire of fighting after the umpteenth planet you visit, and thousandth "creature of unspeakable horror" you obliterate.

Overall I don't think I can give this game a "recommend" just yet. With games like Terraria out there, there are just better alternatives. Unless you already own Terraria, and Minecraft, etc, in which case I then say "maybe."

Oh my god an early access game that's finished enough to play? Incredible. Even in an early beta stage this game blew me away with its vastness. Starbound is worth the money now, and will be WELL worth it once it's expanded upon in future updates. Solid combat system (can still use some work), amazing exploration, and with still so much to offer this game is a 9/10 any day.

I would have to agree from the bottom and top of my heart that if you have an excessive amount of creativity, this game is for you. Regardless of the state of your creativity, this game is intelligent and well worked on. It made me think of our solar system and beyond. Totally worth it's price.

Starbound has an educational side, too. I'd let my kids play this when they're older so they can get associated with geogrophy. 10/10

It is hard to fully describe Starbound.

In this review I shall avoid using the word "Terraria" as although said game is good, I feel that comparing the two is an insult to Starbound's identity, innovation and frank superiority.

Starbound is a sidescrolling, planet exploring RPG of alarming and attention seizing depth. Whilst some elements and genre tropes may appear familiar, such as resource gathering exercises like mining and farming, the majority of the game is played out on a scope suitable of the name "Space Opera". Wherever your character is, be that underground digging for ores, on your personalised space ship or raiding on ancient alien tomb, the sheer scale of Starbound makes you feel profoundly small. Insignificant. As if you are only a grain of sand on a beach. Or rather a single point of light in a sea of stars.
However, it's a good insignificance. The worlds of Starbound are teeming with life and you feel as if you're an interloper trying to carve your path through and find your worth in a universe that has, and still can, exist without you.

Reading this, you may be getting the impression that Starbound is an unfriendly, confrontational game. It is in fact quite the opposite. With a distinct and well directed sense of humour, Starbound welcomes you into it's seemingly endless expanse with a smile and pats you on the back when you make successes small and significant. Coupling this warmth with the spacious and thoughtful soundtrack, the player feels at peace. Calm.

Of course, this Serenity can be broken at will with the games balanced combat or bold adventures into the unknown. But as with any great RPG, changes of pace are all of the player's own accord. And this truly is a great RPG.

Maybe I am pre-destined to like Starbound: I'm a huge sci-fi fan, I love lore with a sense of scope, I love a good complex character progression system, I love vanity items and things to collect. But what I truly love is when all of these things are addressed uniquely with a passion and an individual take that surprises and humbles. Starbound is in it's own sector of uncharted space in this regard.

So of course I recommend Starbound. It is, in my opinion, one of the best RPGs to ever grace Steam. Buy it, explore it, become obsessed with it.

And remember: Never trust a penguin.

I enoy it I really do but if you're gonna play it just be ready for some major wait time for it to get good. Especially with the story missions. If you die on the boss you have to clear the whole thing out again. SCREW THAT! So ya, wait for a few more updates before buying this game. Full release probably best.

You may have seen the hype and videos of this game elsewhere. This review is then in the spirit of caution about the game's most glaring problems in development.

The Steam store still has mockups of "locations" still not in the game.

The same kind of mockups used to sell this game in Pre-Orders long before this title reached Steam and Early Access, some of which were for a lot more substantial amounts than $15.

No Pre-Order milestones/rewards to be seen anywhere near the title after over three years in development and almost two years since those milestones/rewards were offered.

Recent development has taken the sandboxy, open-universe procedural surivival feel that people might have fondly remembered from the pitch, the Steam store page - just as "recent" as the Rampaging Koala - and has been steadily turning it into a static and linear platformer experience with some level differences based upon race.

There is still only one path available through the game despite the number pitched and subsequently cut throughout this game's development cycle.

It's like expecting a game like Terraria and instead getting one of the more sketchy SNES platformers.

At least it's a pretty one-trick pony right now, and has decent music, but the direction of the game is simply going in a completely different place than what people bought into and have played already.

It certainly is giving the Spacebase DF-9, Starforge, and Patterns vibe of over-pitched features and greatly under-developed content, even though the developer has stated that they could continue development for the next 9 years.

This is a fun game but after the recent update I can not play it till they fix it. It took them 1 YEAR to release an update and the update has 2 major errors.

1. 50% of the time when I teleport back to my ship the game crashes.
2. When you trade with an NPC and click something the info that shows up on the right side of the window isn't the info for the item you clicked, and then when you click buy you get an item that was neither the item you clicked or the item that was showing up in the info on the right. If you open NPC trading window then close it and open it again it will show different items every time no matter how long you wait to open it again.

I clicked "yes" for do I recommend this game, but if you don't want to spend this much money on a game that will probably not get another good update for another year, or you don't want to try to play a game that currently has serious issues even though we gave them 1 YEAR to release an update that has no errors. Then you may want to consider looking into play Terraria instead until this game's developers figure out what they are doing.

Meh... Overall the game is okay. Nothing to really be excited about. Don't recommend because it is just not fun enough to be recommended.
*Game requirements are intel core duo / recommnds intel i3 but the game runs extremely poorly with an i5-2500k and R9270 graphics card. This game seems to be unoptimized or has some sort of issue, I get 20fps on lowest settings on my monitors 1920x1080p resolution.
Also, on my laptop's intel i5-4200U integrated graphics I also have the same poor framerate issue. (windows 7 on desktop and windows 8.1 on laptop)
