Starbound 1.0 is Leaving Orbit on 22 July 2016!

In case you missed it, Starbound is coming out of Early Access on 22 July, 2016.

After ~5 years, the game we set out to make finally exists, and to say that it all feels a bit surreal would be a massive understatement!

While Starbound will be finished in two weeks, this isn’t the end. We will continue to update and support Starbound for as long as we can. We’ve got loads of cool ideas we couldn’t fit into 1.0 but hope to put into future updates.

Thanks again for all your support over the years! You’ve stuck with us, and it means so much.

Look out for more info over the next couple of weeks!

“Starbound is one of the most impressive never-ending games I've ever played.”
9/10 – Polygon

“The game had a fairly rocky "early access" journey but after spending some time with the final build, but it looks like it has finally become the game we were promised all those years ago.”
4/5 – The Escapist

“I find it difficult to picture the person who wouldn’t enjoy Starbound. Parts, sure, but the whole is this sincere, incredibly ambitious sandbox that’s as full of charm, and space-faring pirate penguins, as it is stuff to build and places to explore.”

Bu Oyun Hakkında

You’ve fled your home, only to find yourself lost in space with a damaged ship. Your only option is to beam down to the planet below and gather the resources you need to repair your ship and set off to explore the vast, infinite universe…

In Starbound, you create your own story - there’s no wrong way to play! You may choose to save the universe from the forces that destroyed your home, uncovering greater galactic mysteries in the process, or you may wish to forego a heroic journey entirely in favor of colonizing uncharted planets.

Settle down and farm the land, become an intergalactic landlord, hop from planet to planet collecting rare creatures, or delve into dangerous dungeons and lay claim to extraordinary treasures.

Discover ancient temples and modern metropolises, trees with eyes and mischievous penguins. Make use of hundreds of materials and over two thousand objects to build a sleepy secluded cabin in the woods, a medieval castle, or an underwater arcade.

Starbound has been built from the ground up to be multiplayer and easily moddable. You have the tools to make the universe your own and modify the game to suit your play style - add new races, biomes, dungeons, and quests - the possibilities are limitless.

  • Choose from one of 7 playable races and customize your character
  • Save the universe in a story campaign featuring unique characters, bosses, dungeons and quests!
  • You're the captain of your very own starship! Decorate it, expand it and use it to explore a procedurally generated universe
  • Colonize uncharted planets and collect gifts from your tenants - if they like you, they may even ask to join your ship crew!
  • Three game modes - Casual (no need to eat), Survival (eat to survive/drop items on death) and Hardcore (permadeath)
  • Craft thousands of objects - building materials, armor, weapons, furniture and more
  • Capture unique monsters to fight alongside you
  • All content is available in online drop-in/drop-out co-op
  • Built from the ground up to be easily moddable. You have the tools to make the universe your own - add new races, biomes, dungeons, and quests

I want to love the game, I really do.

Planet became corrupt and lost 15+ hours of work with my girlfriend.

Pretty much a dead game considering my creations will be subject to destruction at any time.

The game now is still good but not as good as when it first came out. It kept and exspanded opon the endless exsploring with new bioms (Mini bioms are nice but to little in size and to few/hard to find), new creatures, new races (NON-PLAYABLE) and weapons with amazing abilitys. But its not the same as the original.

The original had memerable bosses, amazing armor, uniqe wepons and some memerable wepons such as The Slave Sword and The Bone Hammer (which is still in but you cant get. A Floran has in in the hunting mission). Also has lore for each of the races. Such as Green Finger-Floran Lore, Big Ape-Apex Lore, Kluex-Avian Lore, some of which are still in game but you dont get nearly as much lore as before.

This version (1.0) has a story which i think is slow, hard to complete becouse of all the forced exsploring, Luck, and scanning, also uninteressting characters, lack of lore from races (KLUEX, BIG APE, WHERE DID THE LORE GO!?!), but perferably i like the ending (SPOILER FREE) the picture at the end (its a Codex) actualy give the story line characters enough personality that you feel like you might of has a slight connection to them through the struggle. Some of the bosses/battles are a bit repetitive and over all more fustrating, Sometimes you dont feel like you have good enough items for them, your damage is minuscule, your defence at max isn't high enough, you need to constenly apply healing items just so you don't die in a matter of seconds. But while on the topic of bosses i love how they brought back one from the beggining (SPOILER-SKIP TO NEXT LINE) The Bone Dragon. Of corse its diffrent and is actually a robotic machine,
but its still cool to have that nodd to the old times. The legendairy weapons that use to exsist have been replaced with others. Some are AMAZING, others are stupid. The boomerang? The Gautlet? The Worm? Weak, Late Game, Stupid. The boss ones however, as rare as they are, are op depending on your play style, such as a sword that can slow enemys, a
1-handed mini rocket launcher. The thing i hate the most IS THE FREAKING HOTBAR! IT'S STUPIDLY DESIGNED and should honestly be replaced with the older one.

In Short, the game is still good. MY POINT OF VIEW!!!
Is it as good as the original? No.
Are the bosses good? No.
Is it fun? Yes
Is it replayable? Only if you want achivements, to build, to get the best stuff, or to discover new biomes.
Is it worth the $15? Sorta.
Is there divercity with play styles? YES, Soport, Mage, Gunner, Tank, Melee Fighter, Bullet Sponge, SO MUCH MOAR!!!
The Story? Suck, Repetitive, annoying, but the ending is kinda worth it.

I still love this game, but it still has a lot that it has to live up to. Mostly, it's past. Bring back the old bosses even if its for some small side mission or as a mini boss. Bring back the old legendairy weapons, bring back the old tech, bring back the racial lore, Bring back Starbound Beta. Im not saying replace the entier game with beta, just bring back stuff from the beta.

This is a pretty honest review that I can give after playing through the story and going up until end-game.

To note, it took me 3 days of playing to do this.

In all honesty...I get the impression that work was put into areas that were not that important compared to others.

Progression is linear and simple, like so:
- Get Thing
- Use Thing to get to New Planets
- Get New Thing on New Planets to make New New Thing
- Use New New Thing to get to New New Planets to get New New New Thing

This rinses and repeats for up to 4 times.

Pros:
- Pretty, lots of variety in some worlds, interesting concepts, nice dialogue
- Plenty of vanity items to collect and display
- Ship can be upgraded, which wasn't a thing back in Beta, which is great
- There's actually a story now
- Plenty of cool weapons

Cons:
- There are only 4 rarities (White, Green, Blue, Purple) with no legendary weapons
- Years in development yet feels incredibly basic still
- Bugs and loading issues that cause you to stick in the air like a Minecraft Sever (Gross)
- The Story is ♥♥♥♥ and short
- The only 'truly legendary' weapon is ♥♥♥♥
- There are only 6 tiers of armor
- There are only 5 mounts
- Crew are useless
- Very little 'rare' or 'exciting' content that requires you to grind to be satisfied
- Up until end-game it's difficult to farm up resources for specific armor, and it ends up being easier to loot weapons, sell them to vendors, and buy the armor
- Various 'gates' throughout the galaxy around various stars yet they all lead back to The Ark (even though you have a permanent teleport to there)
- Very little missions outside of the Main Story
- No reason to build houses other than for purely cosmetic reasons simply because you ship can hold everything
- All workshops have roughly 3 tiers of upgrading and don't unlock anything interesting
- You have to farm around planets for days to find theme-based equipment
- Pets are useless, but admittedly cute, so that's not all bad
- No 'large' or legendary monsters. There used to be some in beta that dropped epic gear.
- Challenge areas are no challenge and the loot is terrible
- Mystery bags are just horrible. Literally horrible. There's no point doing quests for the measly pixels and all of 1 matter manipulator core
- No epic rewards for finish the main story, admittedly the most you get is, literally, a thank you card.

All in all, it's not worth it at the moment, even with it's official release. It just feels very lackluster and bare-bones for what was meant to be a long time coming. Terraria made it's way in less time and had WAY more content than this.

This game has personality.

In fact, it has a whole universe infused with quirky, text bubbly personality. Games with NO personality (Elite dangerous springs to mind), end up just being about pixels and pew pew. Human beings crave human drama, even if that drama is expressed by tiny little alien sprites. Well done Chucklefish for understanding this.

This game has varied combat, with many different challenges from different creatures, sandbox terraria-style base building that will help greatly in survival mode (essential in hard core mode), good character progression in terms of more powerful gear crafted or obtained, and some crazy powerful late game weapons that do fun explody things.

But most of all, it has a pulse. It has a beating heart. No amount of pixels or pew pew can compare with that.

9/10 bizarre alien ideosyncracies.

So close, yet so far.

Short: Terraria > Starbound

Long:
The quests are really boring (MMO style). Scan this fight the boss get the artifact come back repeat. Or, find this dude kill the hostage takers bring him back. Or, bring me 4 Silver ore, make Silver bars, make the equipment and bring it to my friend. I'd be fine with that but the rewards are totally not worth it, most of the time you get a "suprise bag" wich contains either a M.M. Upgrade Module or a Tech Card, that would be cool and all but you get a metric ♥♥♥♥ ton of these if you just explore the surface of a planet. I wouldn't mind that too much but you need to complete the main Story to unlock all Shops in the Outpost (Hub like area)The boss fights are really, really, really boring. They're not hard, they just take a long long time to complete. Especially the last boss fight took me about 10 minutes but I didn't take much damage at all. Compared to Terraria the boss fights are unsatisfying and boring. Building a colony on a planet has no real use. You can upgrade your ship upto five (?) times and at that point you have way too much spare space already. Yes building a colony is cool and all but there is no real point to it since all you really get from it is pixels (the currency) and in the endgame you'll already have enough of them. If you enjoyed Terraria you'll mostlikley enjoy Starbound too because the gample is pretty much the same. If you haven't bought Terraria yet, buy it over Starbound.

The barrage of negative reviews all seem to be nitpicking some particular detail that changed during development. People with hundreds of hours that made some time between playing to write a scathing review. The game is good, it might not cure cancer but it's worth the money. There are mods that fix nearly every complaint I've read thus far, and they are built into the Steam Workshop so you don't have to do anything but subscribe to the mods for them to be installed. I keep glancing at this page waiting to see the very positive overall review sink into something undeserved. It's frustrating but then again Steamcharts is showing Starbound at 60k players right now, so typically, these negative reviews seem to be the vocal minority.

As a preface, I had been following Starbound since it's first announcement, purchased it the day it came onto Steam (a copy for me and a friend) and have been following development on and off for a few years. Recorded playtime wise, I don't seem reliable, but I have been watching this game flourish- or moderately expand in this case.
If you don't know what Starbound is, it is a 2 dimensional procedurally generated sandbox RPG, bearing many similarities to Terraria if you've ever seen/played that. I'm sure other reviews go into depth on exactly what Starbound is, so I won't waste your time and will instead explain why I do not recommend this game.

Pros:
  • Relaxing soundtrack.
  • Able to make your own colony (not really as cool as you would expect, unfortunately).
  • Co-Op and multiplayer can be fun if you have people to play with.
  • Planet coordinates system is really cool if you want to explore a planet that someone else has discovered.

Cons:
  • The progression system seems unbalanced.
  • The procedurally generated content doesn't ever surprise you or seem unique. Once you've seen one thing you've seen it all.
  • Many features in the game are simply fluff that contribute no real value overall.
  • Interesting features removed during development.
  • Missing critical features that really should be here.
  • Side-questing seems completely boring at worst and pointless at best.

The Issue with Starbound
I can't seem to find the right words to make this super lengthy and in detail (third time trying to write this section), so I'm going to simply touch on the issues that stuck out to me in the cons section above.

The progression system seems unbalanced. - So Starbound has crafting, looting, and buying and selling. These ideas tend to clash with each other more often than not which makes the progression system speedy for some parts and slow for others. For instance, crafting weaponry for the first few hours is seemingly useless as almost all the loot you find will be better. Then as you take on harder monsters, loot you find will become useless in favor of crafting. It's the opposite for armor in the beginning. You'll find almost no armor requiring you to craft it. If you do find any in loot, it'll almost be guarenteed to be worse than your current stuff due to how all armor is defined in tiers. It's inconsistent.

The procedurally generated content doesn't ever surprise you or seem unique. Once you've seen one thing you've seen it all. - This is heartbreaking because it's the soul of Starbound. The pool for parts that the planet generator picks from feels really small, as almost all your planets will look and feel exactly the same. For a game that has you jumping across the universe, it's really jarring when you warp lightyears away to a distant planet only to see that the major difference is the leaves are white and slightly bushy. The same goes for the creatures you find. Creatures are either unique, procedurally generated, or bosses. Unique are specifically created by the developers as are bosses. You'll end up running into the exact same unique creatures more often than not and it really makes the planets feel even more uniform. Once in a while you'll find a generated one, but they seem so uninspired and not-fleshed-out that you'll probably wonder what the point is anyway.

Many features in the game are simply fluff that contribute no real value overall. - The game has a story. This is a good thing as it will provide a decent amount of base content for you. Unfortunately once you're done with that, there really doesn't feel like there's a point to continue playing. Yes, you can create a colony which is an interesting feature. Yes, you can go around collecting various creatures from different planets to make a zoo of sorts (which would be much more interesting if the creatures were more diverse). But the problem is this: there is no point other than personal satisfaction. This is a good thing for some and if it is, more power to you. However, some people like myself need a good incentive to use these features. Why make a colony when you can have a crew and can visit the Outpost for buying and selling? It's a decently fleshed out feature but ultimately pointless. I'm sorry to make the comparison, but in Terraria having a colony was essential because there were no other alternatives. Why make a zoo or catch a companion if you already fare well by yourself in combat, and the creatures aren't interesting in their own right?

Interesting features removed during development. - So when Starbound was first released here, it had a hunger system, a dynamic temperature system, an enemy leveling system, a destruction system, and a few others I can't recall. Hunger recently came back which was received happily, but most of the other systems have been watered down and spread out across the game to the point where they're barely recognizable. Temperature is just now extremely cold planets or extremely hot planets all the time which are circumvented by wearing a magical backpack. Enemy leveling is now simple overall planet threat level (which is far less interesting and dynamic). The destruction system was almost completely removed (you could shoot out walls and break things with projectiles, which some people disliked but I found it to be an interesting mechanic).

Missing critical features that really should be here. - The game has no pause function. Some people will argue to the death saying that the game does not need one. Here's the thing- this isn't Dark Souls. You're not often in super-intense situations where pausing the game would cheapen the effect. This isn't so much a problem on casual difficulty, but if you have the hunger system enabled, hit esc to go tend to something, you may be surprised to find yourself back on the ship with 30% lost money and most of your items gone since you starved to death in your absence. This is something that really irks me. Being able to pause in any game is absolutely essential. If somebody knocks at my door, I shouldn't need to be in a situation where I either need to save and quit (losing any progress if on a planet since you're warped back to the ship on load) or risk losing all my stuff and some money because my character starves while I'm away. The excuses that have been given to this issue are even more outlandish, being along the likes of, "This would break multiplayer" and "Single player is basically local client side multiplayer" in which case I would point to Minecraft which also has a perfectly functional pause menu while having everything done on a local server. . The game also doesn't have any sort of auto-saving of any capacity- or even conventional saving. In order to save, you must save and quit to the menu. No mid-game saving and if you're game crashes or power goes out, then you've lost all progress from your previous save which could reasonably be hour beforehand. I never judged the game too harshly about this and figured it would surely be added when the game was released. Unfortunately, this is not the case and is mind boggling that this game managed to go through almost 3 years of QA in the form of Early Access and still not have these.

Side-questing seems completely boring at worst and pointless at best. - This game also has questing- which is also a good thing as it adds variety. Unfortunately it's similar to most of the other features in that it is ultimately pointless. Rewards that are given to you are laughable compared to the effort that you need to put in for some of them. Travelling half-way across the entire planet to find somebody, travelling all the way back while protecting them for a bag that will most likely randomly give me a few torches or some throwing daggers? No thank you.

Sorry, I hit the character limit. Long review.

I've waited 4 years for this game to come out.

I was really devastated to find out they succumbed and released it out into the Early-Access, because it was around the time
when Early-Access was getting a lot of love, and only so much hate. This was before stuff like Towns development stopped and stuff, people didn't yet see the trouble in it all.

Well, it came out there, and I played it, along with others. I walked around, I killed things, I did the lame penguin boss fights.
I was unimpressed - Rightly so I would think, it's not fully developed yet, it's not released, I couldn't judge it well in it's state.
I noticed things were getting added by community requests, and this is where I started to shy away from it, I didn't want to see what was gonna be one of my dream games, altered and messed around with by the community - for good or worse.

So I ignore the dev blog from there on out, and waited my extra, I guess two years.

Lo and behold, right there on Steam, it's out.
Let's give this a proper go.

(ignore 30 hours of gameplay, that was with the betas, my actual playtime is no more than 17 hours, also, Steam didn't have enough space for my full review, I trimmed where I could)

The intro to the game is very slow and sluggish, it gives you the basic tools you need to get started, and you start mining away at the surface for goodies and oddities, pretty classic compared to another game of this genre.
I amassed my metals and my tools, made myself new weapons and armors, and got to more killing.
Then your first real quest is to go really deep into the planet, get a certain type of material, and teleport to the "hub" of the game.
Well god damn if that didn't take me forever, it didn't feel that exciting.

After you find out about the hub, you find out you have to mine moons for fuel to jump to
new planets out of your reach. Might sound cool at first, but it gets annoying very fast.

You tend to hop planet to planet mining the next tier of resources, and making stuff, but within
this whole mess, you have to go around to certain planets, and find each of the six races and their civilizations, and go into SCAN mode, and start clicking
around for green highlighted objects, and talk to people, to learn more about them, and eventually get the next Mission to go on.

The Missions are like adventure instances, a pre-made map with an objective and puzzles with monsters all over the place.
They're fun, but after you do a few of em, you just want it to stop. They lose their interest quickly, when the bosses later turn into bullet sponges, few of them are unique with cool fights.

The main storyline itself just felt, too forced. I thought this was sort of a primarily exploration and sandbox based game. Well, multiple aspects and shops etc. are blocked from you, until you progress enough in the storyline, so it feels forced and boring right
off the bat. Normally to me, this would have been fine, but this felt unnecessary and everything else just gets flat because of it.
(It gets really annoying trying to find the proper planets to just scan some more and more)

Onto the gameplay aspects and mechanics, progression in the game is done by crafting. You craft the first tier of armor and weapons, and then you tend to go find new, randomly generated weapons to kick ♥♥♥ with, and crafting new toolbenches and armor to go along with
the new materials.
It's a little sad, being that making your own weapons is a waste of time, because all the strong - and unique - ones are all out there in the universe, not on your crafting screen. There's only a few tiers of actual equipment as well, it's very short lived. By 8 hours into the game I had already acquired what seemed to be the best armor out of the materials you find in the game.

Onto the UI of the game, it's just, annoying. I don't feel like it's presented very well, it could have been much cleaner. Opening your inventory always gave me a headache, as it opens right in the damn middle of your screen, blocking your character and things around them.
You can move it around thankfully, but it doesn't maintain that position the next time you open it, so it's just a constant struggle trying to open it up in the field. There's a sort function for it thankfully, but not for chests, which gets very annoying, because
there's simply so much ♥♥♥♥ you pick up in the game, that you need to constantly reorganize it all if you're picking it all up.
With chests not being able to be sorted, it just causes you a whole hour of frustration, trying to reorganize it all.

The difficulty of the game is modest. When you make your character, you have the choice of Casual, Survival or Hardcore.
Casual has no real penalties for dying, you only drop a small percentage of pixels, and you can just walk on back and get right back to it.
Survival seems to be the "normal" difficulty, you need to eat to survive, you drop certain items on death, and you drop more pixels.
Hardcore is Survival, included that, when you die once, you're dead forever.

In the end, I honestly just felt stupid for playing Survival, my other friends just chose casual because, having to keep up with food all the time just sounded like an annoying chore. It really was. I would constantly just be chowing down whatever I found to keep my meter
happy, and the drop items on death penalty just made it all the while more boring.

There's a lot of other little attractions here and there, you can own a farm, and make shipments (homage to Harvest Moon I would assume), there's
a Pokemonlike capturing system for pets. Upgrades to your ship along with crew. Vehicles to ride around in (though, no promised mech sadly), little challenge rooms out in the world.
They're neat, though ultimately, I never gave em a chance. I got my hotrod and rode around and that was that.

Sadly, there's a lot of bugs in the game, more than I was betting on. Food sometimes became infinite, planets generated too slowly for me to traverse, and I've had the game crash on me and freeze several times when I'm just moving about.
The FPS however, takes the cake. It would CONSTANTLY keep dropping and screwing up, I looked around and tried the fixes people suggested, and
to no avail, and I typically don't have technical issues with games on my end, so this was a huge concern of mine.
Dropping to 30 frames when just walking around, really sucks.

Graphicly/Aesthetically, it's awesome, and the soundtrack is amazing along with it. Good listening in and out of game.

All in all, at the end of the day, the game feels like it's just a bit of a repetitve cycle with no clear reward at the end. Hop from planet to planet, hoping to find something cool next time, and get annoyed that you have to keep mining fuel to continue on. I beat the game, and it just didn't feel satisfying in the least.

I've felt like I haven't covered enough about the game, but at the same time, I can feel (and see) that I've written too much already.

I don't feel like this game is a worthy spirtual successor to Terraria, as some would like to claim. I had that notion back when it was in
development, but no more. I just see this as another blotch on my game list that I want removed.
If you read through and at one point just said "but there's a mod for X" or "wait for an update". Then no, and no.

The player shouldn't have to resort to mods to fix an issue, and I've done plenty of waiting, I thought one of the points of the beta
was so they COULD fix things, and polish it all up. Sadly, it still feels quite raw and buggy, and just not worth my investment. I don't
want to wait around longer for things to get better - That was suppose to be now.

I dunno if the wait was really worth it is what I'm getting at.

tl;dr This is a one way trip out into space. Wether you want to stay up there, or land somewhere else, well, you might get displeased either way.

Starbound ... 3 years in my library.
I had high hopes after playing the early access in february 2016.

I played since release and in the end, the technical part is really nice when you compare it to an experience as old as Terraria.

But the gameplay is messed up in a way that is hard to define. As if the guys who developped this had no idea about the notion and elements of gameplay as a whole.

But mostly after 5 years of Early access, what you can craft in game is incredibly shallow.
From beginning to end 6 types of armor to craft. That is it. Each type is declined in esthetic variations ... with the same stats.
Maybe 20 weapons that are useful to craft throughout the game.
No upgrades to speak of to your character.
No upgrades to the backpacks you can build to put multiple augments ...

For a sandbx game, the posssibilities of upgrade/craftnig actually useful tro your character are just too incredibly shallow to recommend this game.
There would need to be so much more variety in terms of boss, loot, techs, progress.

Not understandable nor forgivable for a game 5 years in development (which means any hope to a proper enrichment of the game is illusory)

I really wanted to like this game, really did. Back when Starbound was on Kickstarter, I couldn't keep my hype, everything looked so interesting, so many good ideas and concepts, some of those created by fans (like the Poptops).
When the beta came out, I was so happy and went to play immediately. My first impressions were that the game just felt so boring, and exploring the universe felt really empty and barren.

At the time, I thought it was ok, the game was only at beta, I thought they would think a lot more to what could be some good changes to the game, specifically to the races. One of the Kickstarter stretch goals ($500,000), were the race of Novakids, which are “interstellar gas-bag people”, but now, this race is nothing but a reskin of the player model. This is only an example of the concepts that were dumbed down to something so simple and tasteless.

The beta continued being this boring, wasted potential of a game. At a certain point of the beta (which took really long) they added quests to the game. These too felt really obnoxious to do; quests like "fetch quests" or "escort quests", things that you don't expect to do in a space-exploring game. But these were only the "sub-quests" of the game, so you could pass the time doing meaningless things, they added "missions" as well. Missions were nothing more than going through a lot of bad guys, waving your weapon, and defeating an underwhelming boss.

The pacing of the updates goes without saying; the beta was so slow, any annoying bug or glitch took ages to be fixed or to be removed. There were many delays for the release date and many unkept promises.

When they added "upgrades" to your ship, I got kind of excited wondering if this could be something cool, such as cannons for your ship, more gadgets for your ship, but instead you could only expand your ship to add more furniture, when you fully "upgrade" your ship it just feels like a huge empty metal box.

Finally, when the game came out, I was shocked at what the game has become. I am embarrased to say that I enjoyed more the beta than the final product. The "main storyline" is nothing more than the "missions" that I mentioned before, the pacing of the game feels sluggish and not very compelling to continue digging through the planets and exploring, for me it felt like there was no real objective because; the intention of the game that is exploring, felt repetitive. Combat feels slow and clunky, movement feels floaty, the new "hotbar" looks and functions really badly compared to the beta one. There are still some bugs, which I can forgive, but the game still feels unfinished and rushed.

As a sandbox, space-exploring game, Starbound is, in my opinion, a 4/10 game. It's really disappointing to see something that looked so complex and interesting die in this shallow abomination.

I'm currently replaying it and that's what I have to say for now: FOUR YEARS and this game feels emptier than before, somehow. Content lacking and poorly optimized release, nothing like Tiy promised. This game may look complex at first, but it is shallow and empty.

I mean, this game is great if you wanna roleplay or something, because there's no real objective besides the main story as far as I know, everything you do after that is personal gratification.

Pros
-Extremely beautiful pixel art with cute characters and breathtaking environments.
-Extremely beautiful music.
-Good building mechanics.

Cons
-Huge lack of content.
-Uninteresting and unoriginal Plot.
-Shallow.
-Empty.
-Boring and extremely repetitive randomly generated fetch quests (take this A item to this B dude and return to me)
-Not sure why people say it's a sandbox, if you consider gta v or elite dangerous a sandbox, then yes, it may be a sandbox for you.
-Few survival elements that end up just being a annoyance. (cold and heat management have been cut off from the game.
-Souless characters without personality.
-Every race feels the same. No racial weapons, no racial food, same story. Only tiered racial gear without any special bonuses, just cosmetic.
-Few uninteresting weapons and abilities, all randomly generated. Don't expect a Terraria here.
-There are few biomes for each planet, which end up looking the same.
-Eventually you'll find some kind of shockingly easy and BORING ''labyrinth puzzle platformer'' dungeons that add nothing to the game.
-Slippery movement that doesn't make platformer mechanics better.
-You can see all that the game has to offer after an hour of playtime.
-Everything in this game seems like a placeholder. It doesn't feel ''finished''.
-Boring boss fight mechanics, some are incredibly easy, other ones just annoying.
-Novakid race, at the moment, has zero background lore.
-Too many items that are just cosmetic or/and funny.
-Every village you find looks exactly the same. (villages have different themes for each of the seven races.
-Not very smart AI behaviour
-Grind, grind, grind, die, grind.
-Vendor npc and shops can be quite useless.
-Shallow colony system.

In general terms, it's great on the artistic side, but it's not a good game in my opinion, still amazed at all those positive reviews.

At this point they have removed more stuff than they have added...

RIP diamond ore
RIP crafting tools
RIP old toolbar
RIP grasslands biome
RIP temperature
RIP stackable food
RIP robot and jelly bosses
RIP sectors
RIP ability to repair tools
RIP unique SAIL avatars
RIP mechs
...

To be honest the game is still enjoyable but the endless amount of glitches, the boring quests, the terrible inventory sorting and cliche storyline kinda ruin it. The space exploration is still there but that's just it.

While playing this game for the 9 hours I already have, I already thoroughly enjoyed my experience. There have been no optimization problems. I do not have a "gaming computer" in any sort, which is weird because I know that other players have much better set ups than me and they still have problems with latency and FPS drops (every so often, there will be a FPS drop)

I have not played Early Access and I have read many reviews on so many people being disappointed because of the lack of content that was promised or expected. I understand that frustration but this game has exceeded my expectations. Coming from 100+ hours from Terraria, I grew to love this game in a very short time. Movement is a little clunky but you get used to it. Combat is great, I love the feel of it. The attention to detail is amazing in this game. I don't want to spoil anything but the tiniest details makes me want to play more. The art style of this game is gorgeous as I love the look and design of characters and buildings.

I have not progressed far enough to tell you about other planets / quests but will update this when I do. If you have never played StarBound before, I recommend it. It shares similarites with Terraria but at the same time, it is nothing like Terraria.

The only bug I found so far was that every so often a weapon from my tool bar would magically disappear.

All in all, I rate this game 9/10 (so far, I am still salty about the loss of my shotgun)
(Again, I will update this review to the best of my ability when either an update ensues or my opinion changes)
