Alright. So this game straight up sucks ♥♥♥♥. I really liked it at first because the levels were short and I didn't need the "undo" button but after I've gotten a little further it's just unbearably ♥♥♥♥ing annoying. If you screw up a little at the end of a long level? ♥♥♥♥ off, you can do it again from the beginning. And worst of all are the blocks that fall down when you touch them, I would remove those and burn them. And also, why the ♥♥♥♥ isn't there a restart button, so when I ♥♥♥♥ up (which happens every twenty seconds), I can at least restart the ♥♥♥♥ing level?! Yeah why would you put that there, right? Just ♥♥♥♥ off, you're not gonna make this game any comfortable, obviously.

3/10. About 7/10 with undo and restart level buttons.

Make 1 tiny mistake and you have to play the whole level again. Considering you can push a block by walking into it, this can get insanely frustrating. In a way I kind of admire the absolute perfection required....but in a stronger way I just can't recommend this headache of a game to anyone!

In Blocks That Matter, little Tetrobot must solve platforming block puzzles by gathering matter and placing it in tetronimoes in order to save Alexey Pajitnov, the creator of Tetris, and Markus Persson, he of Minecraft fame.

Tetrobot’s adventure through Sweden (the land of indie games) is full of difficult challenges and brain-bending puzzles. You’ll need to think out the entire level before making a move if you want to collect the Block That Matters, which contains an important historical video game where certain blocks… mattered.

The main adventure is a series of 40 levels where you must reach the exit portal. Collecting blocks and using them smartly is your only option. The Tetrobot can either drill into blocks from the side, or jump up and hit them from beneath to collect them. But beware, he can’t drill while he is jumping in the air, nor can he drill blocks beneath him. These simple limitations cause some seemingly simple situations to devolve into brain-frying problems.

The plinky-plunky soundtrack is cute and engaging, putting you into a puzzly mindset, though the over-reliance on deep bass meant I had to turn down my speakers whenever I started the game.
The cartoony graphics are great, and all the different blocks and terrains you will be exploring are interesting. The pseudo-isometric viewpoint you are given is helpful, and it is usually easy to count how many blocks a certain jump will be.

The difficulty ramps fairly quickly, and sometimes a single mistake can mean having to redo minutes of work. The sometimes open-ended nature of certain sections of puzzles can lead to later puzzles being unsolvable, though you never would have known that at the beginning of the level. This situation will rarely prevent you from finishing a level, though it often means you can’t get the Block That Matters.

This was a fun game, though some of the platforming sections got on my nerves a bit, especially when I had to redo some other simple puzzles over and over again to retry the difficult section. A bit more balancing or some sort of checkpoint system would have been really nice. Overall I enjoyed seeking out the Blocks That Matter, and saving Alexey and Markus from their abduction.

There are 10 free bonus “chocolate” levels that were added as part of the Humble Voxatron Debut, so be sure to check those out!

Other then the problems that others have mentioned about no rewind or checkpoints, the game is pretty good. You just really need to think before you act, or else on mistake will case you restart the whole level. The game is really not for me, but I would still recommend it especially when it's on sale or in a bundle.

Great game, has a few annoyances but overall fun. The music is pretty good but their some issues with programs that run in the background, which may cause you to lose where you are in a level and have no choice but to start the level over. Also if you are on a laptop and you happen to use a game pad for input disable power management while playing as it will cause you to lose your place in a level if the laptop tries to go into suspend.

EDIT:

Playing this game second time and i have to change my stance, last time I was playing with the keyboard and the controls were okay, however playing this gme with a gamepad (of any type) just sucks!!! The run button always makes your guys drill into a wall when you dont want to, to the point where I want to bash the ♥♥♥♥ out of the controller because this game shouldnt be this hard on a gamepad, it just shouldn't I get everything from input lag to just ♥♥♥♥♥♥ controls,

I recommend this game if you want to play with a keyboard, if not... stay away from this game unless you hate your gamepad and want to bash it into a million pieces by the end of the game.

Blocks That Matter is a cute little puzzle platformer which is good fun, and has somewhat unique mechanics. I'd played this game years ago and just recently replayed it to 100%, and definitely enjoyed it the second time around as well.

The game's not without its downsides. As many others have mentioned, an 'undo' function would be greatly appreciated, though in general the levels aren't really long enough for that to be a terrible problem. There's also three "Big Mama" levels which require you to race forward as a gigantic insta-death Slime chases you... Those levels aren't too bad if you don't care about 100% completion (in fact, there's an option to skip them entirely from the pause menu), but if you ARE the sort of person to get hung up on 100%, they can be an excercise in frustration. Especially the last one, which requires near-perfect gameplay to get a star on the level. Many of the levels must be solved more than once to get 100%, as well.

Despite those drawbacks, though, I'd definitely recommend the game to anyone who does enjoy puzzle platformers. There are some very nice "aha!" moments when a previously-unsolveable-seeming level clicks into place, and its charms far oughtweigh any problems it might have.

(I do feel compelled to mention that BTM's sequel "Tetrobot and Co" takes care of many of the issues which are found in this game - there's no even vaguely arcade-like sections like the Big Mama levels, an Undo function is available, and the levels can always be completed to 100% on the first time through.)

The game is pretty good, the music is nice and the graphics are really cute.
But, in my opinion, the puzzles are not that fun to play.
You have to constantly redo the level because of a single block placement or jump error.
It kinda gets boring and frustrating, sadly, i was hoping more of it.

Storyline is basic, but still entertaining. The music and even the sound effects are great. Took me awhile to clear 100%, but left me with a satisfied feeling once completed. The controls are tight, and when it comes to a platformer the control of the character should always be number 1. With that in mind Blocks That Matter does not disappoint in anyway as a platformer/puzzle game.

Blocks that Matter -PC-

Blocks that Matter is a lighthearted pick up and play 2D side scroller that I had quite a bit of fun with. It’s is a tricky puzzle solving game with 50+ levels that will get more challenging as you go along. The gameplay and design follow closely to game like braid, limbo, and The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom. The art style is much more basic and cartoon like than the titles I mentioned too. I also don’t think Blocks that Matter is on the same level as braid and limbo, but it comes close.

In the past couple of month I’ve been playing every 2D side scroller that I can get my hands on. I’ve just been going nuts for these games. I’ve been using the site unikgamer.com to keep track of the 2D side scrollers so I can say that I’ve beat them all, but as of now I still have quite a few to go through. Here is a link to the page I’m talking about. It’s a reader voted list of all the best 2D side scrollers of all time. I don’t necessarily agree with every choice, but It’s a pretty darn good list nonetheless. I don’t think you’re gonna see Blocks that Matters on that list anytime soon because it’s not very well known, but I think it deserves to be at least in the top 200.

So here is how you play: The object is to reach the exit portal, but to get there you’ll need to jump around over blocks, obstacles, and enemies. The only real ability you have is to place blocks on the map. But you can only place blocks 4 at a time, and this is what makes things tricky. Each block as different attributes, like wood blocks burn, sand blocks fall if the block under it is taken out, other blocks explode, and some blocks are permanent once placed. Each level makes to solve a unique puzzle by placing your blocks in a certain fashion. Be prepared to have your brain teased over and over again. I said that the game is pick up and play, and by that I mean that for me I would get frustrated by a puzzle and just quit, only to have the answer to the puzzle come to me later and I’d hop back on. It’s really a cleaver game.

I picked it up on a steam indie bundle for pennies, and I feel like this game alone was worth the price of the 10 game bundle. I put around 6-8 hours in the main story line to beat it, and there are more levels and challenges available to players for increased replay value.

There is a story to the game, but it’s not taken very seriously, and it can even be skipped ( I wish I had found out sooner). The story actually surrounds the developers of the game and how they get kidnapped or something. It was all good and what not, but to me, the way it was written, it was like the developers were honoring themselves. You’d have to play the game to understand, I felt like I was visiting some hipster indie developer loft where the developers tell each other how awesome they are. It really rubbed me the wrong way.

If the puzzles weren't so well thought out then this would be a pretty mediocre game, but the puzzles are brilliantly cleaver and make you really sit and think after you die repeatedly though trial and error. I’ve since suggested this game to several friends, and I would do the same to you loyal readers. Blocks that Matter is quite a bit of fun

A charming puzzle-platformer that's undone by a couple of bad decisions, namely no checkpoint system and one-solution puzzles. Often you reach a long level and misplace one set of blocks 3/4 through the level then are forced to start all over from the very beginning because of that one misstep. Too unforgiving and an exercise in frustration.

A very dull puzzle game, with an infuriating UI.

Even for me who isn't a puzzle game fan, the game is rather easy. The optional challenges provides actual challenge, but trying to play the game is an exercice in frustration. There is no way to rollback a move, so if you've made a bad move by mistake, you may have to replay the whole level entirely.

The "rewind time/rollback previous moves" is something that many modern puzzles games offer to avoid unnecessary frustration, but apparently, Block That Matters didn't get the memo. Worse, since the "run" button is the same as the main action button, theses mistakes will happen a lot.

Similarly, if you pause the game, you're supposed to use the "A" button of the Xbox 360 pad to go back to the game. But if, by mistake, you use the "B" button because most games use that, Block That Matters will happily throw you back to the level selection menu, erasing your progress in the current level, without a warning.

I have only been able to go through half of the game, not because i was finding it complicated, but just because all theses UI mistakes and forced restarts made me rage quit the game after 2h.

Alexey Pajitnov (designer of Tetris) and Markus Persson (designer of Minecraft) were kidnapped because they were supposedly collaborating on a new game. Instead they were working on a miniature robot that was a blend of their two computer games. Tetrobot was activated in their absence and had to go rescue them from "The Boss." Definitely cliche.

As Tetrobot, you start out only being able to jump but quickly get a drill attachment. With this drill you are able to drill and collect certain blocks in the level, similar to Minecraft. Throughout the game, a couple of upgrades are added to Tetrobot to allow it to drill and collect different types of materials. With this collected matter, Tetrobot can regurgitate the blocks onto the paying field following a couple of rules:
1) The first block must be anchored to the level. It cannot just be put into mid-air. Subsequent blocks must be attached to blocks currently being placed.
2) Groups of four blocks must be placed. No more - No less. This creates "Tetronimos" I-J-L-O-T-S-Z.

Collecting and building platforms to get through the level is the goal. There are couple other things such as undrillable blocks, falling blocks, slimes and TNT. Each level also contains a Treasure Chest. Collect this chest and bring it to the level and you collect the "Block That Matters" for the level. The blocks that matter all pay tribute to different games.

Finally, every level has a star available. If you finish the level with a set level of blocks in your inventory you get a star, i.e. finish using the minimal number of blocks left on the board. Finish at the minimum get a gold star. Finish below the minimum and get a green star.

Rescuing Alexey and Markus will probably only take 3-4 hours. One of the Steam achievements is to complete this part of the game in one session. However, to get 100% (all the BTM and stars) will take significantly longer. I have played about 15 hours and still have 16 stars to collect and 14 bonus levels to complete. This is a fun little puzzle game that can provide a casual distraction to full out rage quit.

While the story and themes aren't necessarily super exciting, Blocks That Matters makes a lot up in the gameplay department. The object of the game is to control a little drilling robot and solve a slew of increasingly mind-bending puzzles. Your Drillbot can drill certain blocks (dependent on the quality of its drill) and then use those blocks to create platforms. Different blocks have different ways of behaving with certain situations and objects. You are also going to need quick fingers and lightning fast reflexes if you want to solve the puzzles in the "most efficient way" to earn a Gold or even the Green star!

The game is notably short if you don't have a obsession for completing everything and gaining every little golden star in the game, but at the same time it doesn't drag things endlessly and spread itself too thin. Almost every new puzzle requires different kind thinking. In the casual category, this game shines!

I can't say how much of that is personal preference or not, but I can just say that this was very boring for me.

I think it has to do with being able too easily to screw things up and having to redo a long passage of the game, which often needs you to be careful and progress slowly.

The thing is, you have to make mistakes to understand how to play, right from the start, and the game punishes you for that in a way that impedes progress completely.

I mean, you might want to try it, it might be more your cup of tea, but you're warned.

Blocks that matter tries to be a puzzle and platformer game and is mediocre at both.

The primary puzzle aspect involves collecting blocks and placing them again. This simple concept is ruined by needlessly convoluted rules about how you must place and pickup blocks. The most basic moves take too long, its not fun and place one wrong block and you have to reset the whole level, redoing sections you've already done.

The potential of this game might be better realised if the levels were shorter or there was a rewind button.

The story is boring, irrelevant to the gameplay and relentlessly unfunny.

I would not call this game casual as indicated in its 'tag'. It is too fiddly and unforgiving.

Only buy when on special and if you're desperate for a puzzle game.

The nature of the puzzles in Blocks That Matter is such that it is very easy to make accidental but irreversible errors, forcing a complete restart of levels that may actually involve several smaller puzzle steps. The result is that a cute, easy puzzle platformer becomes tedious and maddening by repetition.

Blocks That Matter is a cute puzzle-platformer. It has pretty average puzzles in each level, which must be solved by breaking blocks and storing them to drop tetronimos (made out of four blocks, shaped like Tetris pieces) throughout the level. I found myself getting bored with BTM quite easily, this wasn't helped by my loathing of the attempted story. I got this game back when it was released, and barely played it. My re-visit to it was disappointing as I was expecting something a little special, when it's just an average game.

It's... not a great game. It's not bad, but it's not good either. The puzzles are just too simple, and it's frustrating when you make a mistake because levels are long and without checkpoints (and they really need checkpoints). So yeah, even I - the puzzle fanatic - wouldn't approve this.

Blocks that Matter will appeal to a very specific audience, and - sadly - that audience is not me.

There's nothing fundamentally broken about the game, it's a sweet little action/puzzler affair and it's not a purchase I regret.

However the mechanics do feel somewhat contrived; at it's heart you must place blocks to progress: you may only place four blocks contiguously and you may only destroy eight blocks in a row. Certain blocks fall when placed, others when touched. Some blocks will catch fire, others will not. Some can be drilled whilst others cannot. It's a puzzle game and as such needs rules but I found myself asking why they are so arbitrary a lot.

Possibly the biggest problem is that there are no save points during a level and there is no ability to rewind an action you didn't mean to make. Some (most) of the levels are too long and if you make a mistake jumping and running you'll find yourself redoing solved puzzle elements. Also if you make a mistake near the end of a puzzle you'll need to restart and redo all the jumping and running and blocking that went before. I found myself getting bored quite fast.

Blocks that matter is ultimately tedious rather than bad.

so, main story is like 5 hours, and i 100%ed this ♥♥♥♥♥ in like 20 hours.

EDIT: lol at the negative reviews, if you think this game is too hard because it requires skill then you're a filthy casual

this isn't just a puzzle game, it's also a skill game: there are a lot of hard platforming levels (you can skip em during the main campaig, but you have to beat em if you want 100%), some of which make this gaem look like a rage game. anyway, great game, nice puzzle, a lot of stuff to do, many references to other games (with blocks), indies and non-indies.

8/10 if you like puzzles/skill platformers with a fresh game mechanic.
