“The game’s secret reason for being, though, is its deference to what came before. This is a block game in love with block games.”

The nature of the puzzles in Blocks That Matter is such that it is very easy to make accidental but irreversible errors, forcing a complete restart of levels that may actually involve several smaller puzzle steps. The result is that a cute, easy puzzle platformer becomes tedious and maddening by repetition.

Blocks that Matter will appeal to a very specific audience, and - sadly - that audience is not me.

There's nothing fundamentally broken about the game, it's a sweet little action/puzzler affair and it's not a purchase I regret.

However the mechanics do feel somewhat contrived; at it's heart you must place blocks to progress: you may only place four blocks contiguously and you may only destroy eight blocks in a row. Certain blocks fall when placed, others when touched. Some blocks will catch fire, others will not. Some can be drilled whilst others cannot. It's a puzzle game and as such needs rules but I found myself asking why they are so arbitrary a lot.

Possibly the biggest problem is that there are no save points during a level and there is no ability to rewind an action you didn't mean to make. Some (most) of the levels are too long and if you make a mistake jumping and running you'll find yourself redoing solved puzzle elements. Also if you make a mistake near the end of a puzzle you'll need to restart and redo all the jumping and running and blocking that went before. I found myself getting bored quite fast.

Blocks that matter is ultimately tedious rather than bad.

There's nothing inherently terrible about this game but it remains an average and passable experience at best. The movement and mechanics feel sluggish and nothing about the visuals or writing stands out as exceptional. Just bland. The puzzles themselves are fairly easy for most of the game, but it's easy to make a mistake that requires a complete level restart. There is no undo function. So the game is less about puzzle solving and more about tediousness.

It's not awful, but it doesn't do anything to earn my recommendation. You might enjoy it if you like puzzle-platformers, but there are better examples of the genre out there.

It's a cute, clever game. On the other hand, it demands either more skill or more patience than I can muster. Many levels have 3+ puzzles to solve, and failure means restarting the level, which can mean spending a couple minutes of resolving simple problems instead of retrying the puzzle that just beat you. If there were a more granular checkpoint system, I would keep playing.

Plenty of folks will have enough patience for this game. I don't.

Really enjoyable puzzle-game. The story is cute, but I REALLY wish they wouldn't make you click through the dialogue every single time you retry a level <- patch this and its a perfect puzzle game! :)
