Free Weekend & Community Challenge

Hey everyone,

We have some really good news for you today. Indeed, the Endless games are back for a FREE WEEKEND on Steam, with a very exciting community challenge. It starts now and ends on April 20th at 7pm (CET). But that's not it, we have other cool announcements for this weekend.

Here’s what's in the program:

  • Discounts
  • Unlocks
  • Closed Beta for Endless Legend
  • MP Update Dungeon of the Endless

The more players join and play, the more unlockable characters, items and other content pieces are unlocked in Endless Legend and Dungeon of the Endless. Stretch goals and event page available here: Amplitude Studios’ Free Weekend. The unlocks include TF2 characters for DotE and a digital artbook for EL and DotE. Spread the word!

Our 50 lucky early players will receive a Steam key for the closed beta of Endless Legend’s Guardians expansion. It starts now and ends on April 22nd at 3pm CET. If you’ve applied, check your emails! :) We're looking forward to reading your first impressions.

Here are some jokes that we thought were pretty funny:
  • "A guardian walks into a bar. Barkeeper: "Come in, but leave the dust outside!"
The guardian turns around and yells: "Sorry bro, you have to stay outside!"", by EvilMage
  • "What did the Drakken say when he parleyed with the Centaur village? "Who's the Bos around here?"", by notagreatgamer
  • "Why did the contract workers build a YMCA in the Cultist's city? They heard the locals were really obsessed with the Village People.", by Lord_Mandalore

The Multiplayer update is now available. Find the complete release note here. This new version includes several features that you have suggested: a save system, the ability to exchange items, private games and much more.

This feature allows a disconnected player to get back into the game. If a network issue occurs, the host can save and quit, then reload the game with everybody. We’re working on small improvements to make this process simpler.

The auto saves are also available on multiplayer mode. If the host crashes or is disconnected, he/she will be able to load the game at the beginning of the current floor with the other players.

Have an awesome weekend!
Check the progress of the Free Weekend Challenge here,

Create your own Legend

Another sunrise, another day of toil. Food must be grown, industries built, science and magic advanced, and wealth collected. Urgency drives these simple efforts, however, for your planet holds a history of unexplained apocalypse, and the winter you just survived was the worst on record. A fact that has also been true for the previous five.

As you discover the lost secrets of your world and the mysteries of the legends and ruins that exist as much in reality as in rumor, you will come to see that you are not alone. Other peoples also struggle to survive, to grow, and perhaps even to conquer.

You have a city, a loyal populace, and a few troops; your power and magic should be sufficient to keep them alive. But beyond that, nothing is certain… Where will you go, what will you find, and how will you react? Will your trail be one of roses, or of blood?

Explore fantastic lands.

  • Lead one of eight civilizations each with a unique gameplay style and storyline.
  • Survive through cold dark seasons that drive Auriga to its end. Will it also be yours?

Don't think, play

This is a 4X game with some interesting new mechanics, which mostly work well. For me it's basically the Sword of the Stars (1, not 2) of land-based 4X. The things that I enjoy most are the city management system and that you don't have to go wide to win, though there certainly are advantages to rapid expansion. I beat the game on the hardest difficulty with the one-city-only faction.

If I was giving it a score I'd probably say 8. It isn't as polished and well-rounded as Civ V, but I find it to be more fun and interesting.

- Looks much prettier than Beyond Earth.
- Lots of people praise the music. I wouldn't say it's the greatest, but it is solid.
- All the factions are interesting and different. Each has a gimmick, though they don't all suit the playstyles that the developers intended.
- The hero system can be annoying at times, since some heroes are just completely better than others, and it is random chance which ones you'll be given access to (though starting heroes are always the same).
- As with many 4X games, it suffers from the fact that the victory conditions can be pretty meaningless. Literally the fastest way to win a diplomacy victory is to continually break your alliances and reform them each turn. Also, once you start winning, you may as well just kill everyone else immediately rather than waiting to get a science victory or whatever.
- Combat can be very tedious; I recommend increasing the combat animation speed immediately. Also, do not underestimate the importance of initiative in combat. Each unit only gets one attack/counterattack, and the default counterattack overrides all except one of the special attacks.
- You have to work out a lot of the mechanics for yourself. This game does not hold your hand. Reading a guide on city leveling/building is almost mandatory.
- Harder difficulties are legit challenging.
- Quests system is robust enough, but some of them are fairly stupid and/or impossible.
- Strategic and luxury resources all have meaningful differences and advantages.

Some basic info so you can work out if it is the game for you:

Hex-based movement. Out of combat movement is in army stacks with movement of slowest unit, but combat is in a 6-turn battle/encounter where the units split into one-unit-per-tile. This encourages you to build armies which complement each other out of different unit types.

Cities work differently to most other games of the genre. The population is essentially all "specialists", to use the Civ term, where each unit of population can be used to create (base) 4food/4industry/4science/4dust/2influence depending on your priorities that turn. Food, industry, etc. on terrain adjacent to the city is automatically collected, and you can expand the city by building districts in adjacent hexes to increase the area being passively collected from.

The world is divided into regions, and you can only have one city per region. This makes city placement be really important, and leads to important decisions as to city expansion.

Units are upgradeable with equipment. Each faction has three unique base units, and you can assimilate up to three minor factions to get a faction-unique buff and their factions unit. eg. assimilate the Haunts to get 5% to science per Haunt village in your territory, and build "Ended" which are flying ghosts with a chain lightning attack.

It's literally Heroes of Might and Magic mixed with Sid Meier's Civilization.

What more do you want?

Just don't play the tutorial.
It's awful and dosen't explain much.
The UI is simple, but takes getting used too, after a quick warm-up round you'll be good to go if you explore it some.
Hell, you will get a basic idea of what to do if you take a moment and read through the factions triats.

The combat feels uninvolved at first glance, but it's more on how you tell your troops to do things. You can tell them what to do, to the letter if you learn to use the unit tactics, as they tend to do their own thing unless you tell them not too.
I played some multiplayer, and it definetly showed the difference it makes to interact with your troops compared to just telling them who to attack as you can better control the field and force them into narrow areas in the terrain, or into some troops you have on the high ground. In other words, it was a massacre, not a battle.
I'm so sorry to that Broken Lords Player, whoever you were.
Should of accepted the peace treaty, bruh.

Overall, good stuff. I'll play this over Civ anyday.

This is review for version 1.0.12 @ 2014/10/30

Endless Legend is a 4X turn-based fantasy game. The world settings, background story and races are a little relative with Endless Space.

Several awesome feature
+Gorgeous artworks, pictures and animation.
+Wonderful in-game music. And OST included for sure.
+Simple and neat UI design.
+Distinguished races with nice story.
+Interesting and challenging battle system.
+Customizable race and units.
+Mod support.

-No hotkey instruction and no option to customize the hotkey.

Generally speak, Endless Legend is definitely a masterpiece. If you like deep and complex gameplay, thinking and figuring out strategies, managing and expanding, you should try Endless Legend!

One of the most original and innovative 4x games to come out in years. Eight wildly varied factions (each with their own unique, expansive plotlines), a host of really interesting, unique mechanics (only one city per district, no tech tree). Most of the mechanics are very intuitive, but offer some pretty significant depth.

This came out at the same time as Beyond Earth, but it's been much better received, and the reason for that is simple- it has personality. Playing with each of the factions is like starting a different singleplayer game, and the faction creator is very flexible. Like its predecessor, Endless Space, the game also has fantastic, understated art and music.

The only problems are that some of the more advanced faction-specific mechanics are poorly explained, and that the AI can sometimes be poor at defending their cities. Amplitude have patched this, but some more work remains to be done.

Overall, the most fun I've had with a 4x since Alpha Centauri.

If you like Civilization-style TBS*, but want more depth and strategy, as well as much more unique races and the option to create your own race, this is the game for you.
I have played Civ:BE, and I honesty regret pre-ordering that game before playing Endless Legend, Civ:BE is nothing compared to this game.

*TBS not RTS, thank you Sahuagin.

Looking for the story elements that Firaxis forgot in Beyond Earth? They're right here. The varied factions lead to tons of replyability. Each faction plays differently. There are some balance issues, but this is well forth playing . Firaxis need to step their game, Amplitude dunked them here.

I have mixed feelings on this game.
From a more short term point of view, the game is awesome. What i mean by this is someone who wants to get the game, and play a couple matches, there is enough new and exciting content to make it worth it.

But if you are looking for that game to match or rival Sid Meiers Alpha Centauri (that you still play after years), then this isnt it.

In my opinion this game could be awesome. But the amount of bugs, glitches, broken and missing systems outweigh the positives, and that is why im giving it a negative review. Its like a computers game version of a 'tease'. "Here is all this awesome stuff...that i will fail to deliver." The AI makes single-player play only a short term option.

+ Each Faction has unique technologies and unique playstyle
+ Each Faction has unique units (changing factions forces you to change combat style)
+ Each Faction actually feels distinct and plays differently
+ Beautiful world design with unique concepts
+ Detailed Civilization Statistics easily accessed during the game.
+ Customizable Races and Units
+ Customizable Maps

+- Unique map system that is cool but doesnt allow you to see the whole world at any one time
+- Quest system, while a positive at first glance, is poorly done and alot of quests 'break' easily, quest count is low which leads to lots of repitition
+- Unique 'Winter' system, while a positive at first glance, effects everyone the same and only slows the game down
+- No naval system for people that like water maps. I just turn water levels way down.

- No Key Rebinding and limited shortcuts
- Issues with crashing. Ive had more crashing with this game then i have had with any other ive played in last couple years.... and from the forums it sounds like i dont even have the worst of it.
- Lack of documentation. Tutorial is extremely poor. Wiki is extremely poor. Even asking questions on the forum, no one knows how certain things work.
- There are a lot of little bugs/glitches that really annoy you when playing, that when reported are either ignored or written off as "low" priority. These are the bugs that want to make you pull out your hair after the 50th time they happen.
- The diplomacy system is -extremely- basic. Flavor text and AI messages are completely wrong and doesnt make any sense. There really is not any sense to AI actions and they are easily exploited.
- The back story behind each of the factions really doesnt matter. It has no influence on gameplay. You can go through the whole game without reading any of the story. It is not important and deosnt affect the game.
- The battle system IS unique. But in a negative way. Lack of unit control and poor programing lead to ENDLESS frustration
- A full unit stack (6-9 units) can kill (literally hundreds) of weaker units and take tons of cities without taking major damage. There is no 'fighting your way back' in this game.
- Taking cities is waaaayy to easy.
- The final tier of techs is totally ridiculous. Like to play conquest games? First person to get the tech that gives double damage and double health to all units wins!!
- As soon as one person gets a clear advantage there is no reason to keep playing the game. There are no events in mid-late game that shake up gameplay or distinguish one game from another. After turn 200 or so every game blurs together in tedium.
- I dont know if i get on at the wrong times or the game is just dead, but i never see more then 1-2 multiplayers games active. Usually zero.

Major Negatives: *** The AI is totally incompetent in just about everything.***
- It cant fight in battles. Having units mindlessly standing around for slaughter is common.
- Makes no diplomatic sense. Never fights empires that are threats. Easily bribed.
- It cant build 'strong' armies. Unit diversity? Nope. Trying to counter my archers with archers of their own? Nope. Just build masses of cavalry units that have a bonus against archers but get killed before they can reach them.
- AI technology selection doesnt make sense (Dust based civilization skips 3 dust boosting techs)
- Kinda stops playing if they lose majority of empire. Never see more armies from them or any switch from horizontal to vertical gameplay.
- Doesnt play to victory type. Playing conquest victory? Every AI empire is fine playing an economy based game as one empire slowly takes out empires one by one.

Final Statement:
Basically AI sucks. And the multiplayer open lobby is empty. Which really leaves no reason to get the game.

(Review for version #[1.0.24] #2014/12/11)

Endless Legend is a 4X (explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate; Sid Meier's Civilization is an important example of the 4X-era) turn-based fantasy game.

It's really difficult - for an old strategist like me - to find something wrong within the game.
+The visuals are stunning,
+the soundtrack is harmonic and match the turn-based gameplay,
+the combat system is simple, yet interesting,
+a modern transparent UI,
+Customizable race and units and
+Mod support.
(Also the lore is quite fascinating)

But! - like every pro - there is critic:
-Like in other strategy-games, there's a lack of AI-performance. If you turn up the difficulty, it will just provide higher buffs (like more money, more science etc.) for the AI. It could simulate a challenge for someone, but for others it's just cheating and unfair. (I will deny my own opinion in this regard)

Overall, good stuff. Not bad for an Indie-game. This game tried some new ideas and implemented those successful.

4X done right!

For the TL;DR Its a great game. Hits so many great titles out there, but adding its own fresh curve balls. I do not regret my purchess. I would recommend this game to anyone. 10/10

This is by far, one of the best 4x I have played in a very long time. If you are a Civ fan you need to give this game some thought. It has everything the civ fans enjoyed over the years, but at the same time also gives new and refreashing ideas. It has the 4X feel to it that we all know and love. So it wont take long to start understanding the way this one plays but at the same time also throws some curve balls your way making you go "whoa, that is awesome"

Scrolling out the map never felt so good. in other games you scroll out. Get an under standing and scroll back in. This, you scroll out and admire everything you have done seeing all that you controlll from a more masters look. Feeling like your on that iron throne and pushing around your wood pieces.

Combat gives a whole new meaning to the 4X genra. Iv played alot of these style games. I love the combat to this, So far this game has dabbled in my childhood more then I thought it would from playing Civ 1-5 and Heros of might and magic.
If your a heros of might and magic fan being able to tell eatch unit who to attack and where to run instead of click, right click. and a fight broke out. You get so much more controll over what eatch unit does. AS well as your hero.

Units, being able to gear up your units with more armor and weapons, rings and necklesses. For how indepth this game goes. Its got me comin back for more and more eatch time.

Heroes. Eatch hero has a skill tree as well as gains xp. Adding new armor, trinkets, weapons. Skill points. Want a badd ♥♥♥ that leads your troops to hell and back, you got it. Want one that sits in your city and just helps run that ♥♥♥♥. You got that to. I love just exactly how much controll i have over what everyone does.

On to that last part over controll. Your citys go a little different in the route of how things are done instead of making workers. plowing feilds building this, and telling them to do this. Instead you have workers, but apart of the city. Want to pop out more gold(in this case Dust) Move one, two or all of the workers over to dust. Need to make this troop faster for that war. Move all your workers over to industry. Some may say that might make it easier but it doesnt just makes it more convenient. Workers are still taken away eatch time you make a settler so there is a downfall to all happy ups.

The other thing that I love about this is the races to choose from, eatch with there own back story and quest line. There own play style. Really throwing more in to the ring. Not only this, its the fantasy theme, if your a fantasy lover, 4X player, and a Heroes of might and magic playing Civ 5 person. Give this game more then just thought, go ahead and put it in that cart. You will not regret it.

Endless Legend is similar to classic 4X games like Civ but adds many new mechanics and elements that make the game refreshing and unique.

Each run feels different and fresh thanks to the 8 playable factions - all with their own unique specialties, traits, units, heroes, and mechanics; there's also over 15 minor factions that you could assimilate to bolster your faction's strength or cover a weakness. If that is not enough variety for you, then you could also make your own custom factions!

You can also customize your heroes and units with weapons and equipment you unlock via research or from quests. For instance, the Vaulter's archer unit - the Marine - can be equipped with long bows that are strong against flying units or a 1handed crossbow and shield for more defense and extra firepower in short-ranged combat. Armor and accessories can be mixed and matched to customize your heroes and units even further.

The game also features politics and trading like your standard 4X fare but adds a new twist due to the introduction of influence as a resource needed to engage in such. Influence is not only used to for politics and trades, but also for assimilating minor factions and passing empire plans that give buffs to your empire.

The game might seem daunting and intimidating at first due to the many complex mechanics and vast amounts of customization available to new players - but they're actually easy to learn and engage with thanks to the smooth and intuitive interface as well as the empire screen and army screen which shows a summary of everything in your empire like your cities, resource production, construction queue, heroes and armies, etc etc. All it takes is just 2 clicks to find anything you might have lost track of in the map.

Atmosphere-wise, the game us top-notch - with gorgeous visuals and art style, back by an amazing soundtrack, and fascinating fantasy/sci-fi story and lore.

My only complaints are that the AI can be quite dumb, and slow-down may happen when games gets ridiculously long like turn 300+.

Overall: Highly recommended for newcomers and hardcore fans of the 4X genre.

Firstly, I would like to thank the 4X-enthusiast group eXplorminate for giving away this game. I typically don't pay much attention to giveaways, but I actually won something that time. And that something happened to be a game that seemed somewhat fascinating to me at the time.

As of now, Endless Legend is a whole lot more than "mildly fascinating," and I am shocked I did not know about it sooner. This is one of the few games that I wish so many more people did know about. My opinion of this game is from the perspective of a[nother] person stepping into it from Civilization V. I also have some Total War to be comparing it to, so I have that to reference as well. That said....

Endless Legend is a beautiful game. There are few other words that can describe it so aptly. The presentation of Auriga (the gameworld) from the map anomalies to the tile improvements that match the civilization's stylistic impressions to the special effects during winter to the GUI, everything about the game is beautiful. The UI deserves a special shout-out, because everything is placed so intuitively, and it's simple, clean, and elegant. There is no other game that matches the polish of Endless Legend's UI (although vanilla Civ and G+K were both very meticulous through the menus and what-not). As a turn-based strategy, the gameplay is sufficiently balanced, and the overall war mechanic is somewhat more sophisticated than what you'd find in Civilization, using Total War's army-building model. The quest functionality provides a lot of deep lore, and it really is amazing how intricate Amplitude's universe is - they have clearly committed a lot of energy to just... being creative here - so I have to mention it even though I really don't care for it much in my playthroughs. I don't have to, though. It's there if you want it, but I'm just not an RPG person. My biggest gripe about the game is how much ALL CAPS ARE USED IN ITEM DESCRIPTIONS. I MEAN, IT'S KIND OF ANNOYING TO READ.

All in all, it's a fantasy version of Civ that is very, very polished, endlessly replayable (see what I did there?), full of character, surprisingly strong on the war/conflict front, and I am recommending it now solely because I want more people to know about it. I encourage you to pick it up, or at least look into it a little deeper.

Pretty damn good game. It has a medium learning curve because you can build and use your empire how you want to.
Unlike most 4x games its not as much about expanding your empire as it is building it up.
You are not confined to a tech line and they really made this game open ended and customizable for the player.

The closest this game can be discribed is imagine civ and heros of might&magic had child; this would be the result.

There is so much that could be said about this game but ill narrow it down in four words. Deep Fun innovative and sandboxy like a 4x should be.

Each faction is totally diffrent and does not have the cookie cutter races that only differ slightly from eachother. One faction can only build one city. Another faction can move there citys becouse they are nomatic. Another faction doesnt eat food but consumes a diffrent resource. Another faction eats well,, other factions citizens!! Its great!

The Heros are amazing and have the MOO2 govener feel to them. Did I mention all the side quests in the game? Yes there are those too.

I can go on and on about all the neat things you can do in this game that are just ingenous but all I have to say is; This game is simply a fresh take and a instant classic. I have no regret buying it.

Only down side is there are a few small bugs to get squashed yet.

I am baffled as to how this game could reinvent the civilization formula with so much originality that it makes me wish the civilization series would actually learn from this.

Extremely fine art and an absolutely gorgeous map, and lots to do. And I do find it quite hard. I still have to play many many hours but I am enjoying this a lot. All of the races are interesting and it is a first that I'm actually playing everything random.

9/10. Excellent

Enless Legend is the first "Endless" game I have ever played, so from a gameplay standpoint it feels a lot like the Civ series. You develop your civilization through a tech tree, update your cities with buildings, and build armies for exploration and extermination. Armies in this case are more hero and item driven than Civ. Similar to say, Fallen Enchantress, you develop heroes and units with weapons, armor, and trinkets, which can be found in the world, aqcuired through quests, or created in a city. This all feels good, but it's not what keeps me playing Endless Legend.

I find the world building in Enless Legend to be supurb. Here's why:
  • Every faction is unique. Each one of them has it's own back story, and purpose for being on this world. Each unit has back story which explains why it has the abilities it has, and often why it looks the way it does. A campaign has been built for each faction to provide a steady drip of objectives and story to go with it. Also, each faction plays quite differently from the next by having different strengths and resource needs.
  • The look of the game is striking. It's the type of game you could buy based on the sole belief that it is an interactive and evolving piece of visual art. The color pallet, unit and city design, and way the topography of the map is depicted is beautiful.
  • The soundtrack is quite nice. Again, the factions have a unique feel and tone articulated in the ambient music. This does a great job of pulling you into the world.
  • Finally the UI. It may be the best I have ever used in a turn based strategy game. The overall design is greyscale and filled with very clear icons. Color is used to great effect to represent resources, factions, regions of the screen, and actions which can be done with the mouse pointer on specific objects. Everything is meticulously and clearly described through tool tips, and the UI can be collapsed and expanded in several ways. The tech tree, which is more like tech pools, where you research so many from Age 1 to move on to Age 2 is a great addition to the genre. The diplomacy screen is split into a semi-circle, which radiates outward. Depending on your standing with an opponent they will physically be closer or further away from you, and spaced relatively to their own allies or enemies.

There are a couple places I could see improvement in this game, and it would be easy to do in an expandion.
  • The first is the combat. The way "combat mode" is integrated with the living world is great, but I wish I had a little more control over my individual units. Some uniqe skills which I can choose from and actively use would draw me into the world even more. They do a great job integrating every unit into the world and a few unique skills and art to go with it would be great. There is always the option to automate or spectate the battle, and I often feel like manually controlling a battle, and spectating it is about the same thing.
  • The next is a small hickup in usability and it only stands out because everything else is so fluid. Adding a created unit to a nearby army stack. It appears you have to put the new unit into an army to leave the city, and then walk it to the stack. Sometimes this can be done by selecting the unit, and right clicking the stack. Othertimes it doesn't work. I have wasted many movement turns trying to get this accomplished.

If you are looking for a great turn based strategy game set in a fantasy/sci-fi world I would highly recommend Endless Legend.

I recently picked up Beyond Earth and actually enjoyed it quite a bit, despite the well worn complaints already voiced in other reviews. It's a good game, whose worst offense is being the next (perhaps overly streamlined) game in the revered Civilization franchise. For me, perhaps the best thing about Beyond Earth is that it led me to discover Endless Legend.

I am finding this to be a better game than Beyond Earth for some of the following reasons:

- The 8 major factions in the game are all very distinct and feel quite different from each other
- There are 8 victory conditions vs. 5 in Beyond Earth (3 of which felt very similar)
- Hero units that level up and equip items!
- Quests that are more interesting, including unique quest lines for each faction
- There is a market place where you can buy and/or sell resources, units and more heroes!
- The UI contains a lot more information and there are tooltips on everything
- Winter...brrrrrrr
- $15 cheaper
- And much, much more!!!

If I could travel back in time and was forced to choose between Beyond Earth and Endless Legend knowing what I do now, I would go with Endless Legend hands down. If you only have room in your life for one new 4X game this year, this is the way to go!

Endless Legend™ is a unique explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate strategy game. At first it can be confusing, and seemingly too much to handle if you're a player new to the genre, but fortunately there is a tutorial and wiki that teaches you how to play. When you have learnt the basics, you'll find that the game play is simple, which is what makes Endless Legend™ unique.

The expansion and exploitation aspects are easier than popular 4X games, such as the Civilisation™ series. It primarily consists of moving icons of workers in your cities to different zones in order to produce more of certain resources, either food, production, science or influence.

In a similar fashion to Civilisation V™, you have settlers that you use to build cities; however, when you settle a city, you take control of an entire region, and there are a number of regions depending on the size of the map that you had chosen. The map consists of many hexagons, and your city will start out small, usually seven hexagons in the shape of a hexagon, unless you build it near an impassable hexagon, but the region that you built it in will change to your empires colour. You then have the option to expand your city in the region by the construction of an extension at the edge-hexagons of it's current geographical influence.

The battle system is great; when you encounter an enemy army, the scene changes and you both fight on a zoomed-in part of the map where tactical game play occurs. You first position each of your units on selected tiles, and then move, attack, debuff, buff or heal; the tiles you can position your units on are selected depending on where you attacked, or were attacked from.

The two stages of the battle system consist of fluid movement and rigid movement; after you have positioned your units, you click ready and the second stage begins, and in this stage you can target enemies, allies, or target a tile you wish to move to, but if something obstructs you, your movement will fail, yet you may still complete an action; if you are in range of an enemy at the end of this rigid movement, you will attack. You have the chance to win battles using skill and tactics even if the odds are stacked against you. There are six phases in each battle, if units on both teams are alive after six phases, it results in a draw. There is an option to auto-resolve a battle, which you'll probably use often to save time; the probability of winning is shown prior to this choice.

The customisation in this game is invigorating; you can make new units, and even create an empire of your own. When making a new unit, you take an unlocked unit as a basis and you can change it's name and equipment, which alters the statistics of that unit; or you can edit the original unit. You can also rename any regions you control, and the name appears in the centre of that region in bold letters when zoomed out, which is a nice addition.

Each empire has three units--one starting unit, and two that can be unlocked by researching them. However, within the many regions are minor factions that can be pacified, either by doing a number of missions for them, bribing them with currency or simply fighting them. If you have settled a city in a region where you have pacified a minor faction then you can assimilate them to gain a passive bonus, and their unit. You can assimilate a maximum of three minor factions, therefore, you can only build six different types of unit at a time. You have the option to change an assimilated faction, so you could end up using many types of unit in one game. The army capacity is maxed out at eight, but you must research certain technologies to increase your army capacity, which begins at four.

Another good feature of Endless Legend™ is the hero system; you may hire heroes to act as Generals of your armies or Governors of your cities; heroes give bonuses to whatever they are set to, and any hero can be a Governor or General. You may switch a hero between being a Governor or General, but, there is a cool down before you can switch back again. Each empire starts out with a hero, and further heroes can be hired after researching the technology that permits access to the hero marketplace. Some heroes can be gained through faction quests, attuned to certain empires that you can select.

There are many strategic resources that are unlocked at different eras, and you exploit these to construct buildings or equipment for your units. You only need their presence in your region to build a exploitation on them, so you don't need them in your cities geographical influence. There are also luxury resources which are used to add temporary bonuses to cities or armies, depending on what resource it is; they are called booster effects, and some empires can use strategic resources as booster resources. All kinds of resource can be used for trade in the marketplace or on the diplomatic screen when communicating and dealing with another empire.

There are many victory conditions: Score, Expansion, Elimination, Economic, Wonder, Scientific, Supremacy and Diplomatic. I will not go further in depth on each but instead direct you to the wiki which can be found at http://endless-legend.wikia.com/.

The graphics are finely attuned, but it can be difficult to tell what the tiles consist of (i.e. whether a tile is forest or grassland) without mousing over and reading the information about that tile; however, if you zoom out around half way it becomes clearer; apart from that, it looks good. Zooming in and out of the map is a seamless switch between viewing the regions, and viewing cities and tiles.

When you start a new game you're presented with an options screen, where you can change the difficulty, the empires you are against, the size and shape of the map, and more; there is even an advanced section that goes further in depth. The customisation here is brilliant.

I haven't tried multiplayer yet because I'm still a mediocre player and need to train, when I have, I will update this review.

9.5 out of 10
