Massive Starbase Update for GalCiv III is now available!

Too many Starbases, not enough time? No problem.

GalCiv III v1.7 Brings Starbase update to solve all your management problems!

We know that many of our fans love playing gigantic-sized maps over sprawling hours of game play. The new Starbase update brings several new features and tools for reducing micromanagement and increasing efficiency for those late-game long hauls. Check out some of the update's highlights:

Queue Upgrades Directly from Shipyards
Constructors are ordered from the Shipyard that can deliver the upgrade in the shortest amount of time and will now automatically travel to the Starbase.

Plan Your Battles...and Your Retreats
The new "Battle Assessment" feature allows you to hover your mouse over an enemy fleet to see an estimation of your fleet's victory against them.

Sort and Group your Ships with Ease
New options make it easier to find the ships you want when you want them. Mark your "favorite" ships so that you can snap right to them in a hurry!

Make Friends, Not Enemies
The update to diplomacy has made it so that your allies are more likely to give you a good deal on trades! Trade value will now scale based on the game's difficulty setting and your relationship with other factions.

Easily Access Starbase Modules and Effects Info
The "Starbase Window" displays more detailed statistics and will aid you in managing the Starbase and the rest of your empire.

Maximize a Colony's Potential
The new "Planetary Alert System" will warn you when your influence, population, or approval are holding your colony back.

...and more!

To check out the full list of changes for v1.7, see the official change log here.

Never the same game twice, Galactic Civilizations III is the largest strategy sandbox ever made. Each new game offers an array of options as you set it up - choose your map size, abundance of planets and resources, frequency of events, and more for a unique play experience every time. Galactic Civilizations III also removes linear victory conditions and offers you multiple objectives that you can choose to pursue in order to win, such as military conquest, cultural domination, technological ascension, or political alliances. The new multiplayer capabilities also allow you to expand your challenges and fights beyond an AI in order to face off against fellow players. All of this, topped with a rich and in-depth custom ship designer ensure an immersive and exciting experience as you decide how to rule your galaxy.

  • Never the same game twice: Play in the ultimate sandbox where each game has a unique map, worlds, and challenges to face -- all on a massive scale. Play against 16 to 100 opponents.
  • Multiple paths to victory: Win through military conquest, cultural domination, technological ascension, or political alliance.
  • Story-based campaign: Get brought up to date on the 20-year story arc behind the rise of humanity in the 23rd century.
  • Massive technology tree: Research a technology tree with immense breadth and depth. Each playable faction has their own unique specializations. Your choice determines how you play and win.
  • Faction & Ship Customization: Create a civilization with its own look, ships, technologies, and even options for how the AI will use them.

  • Multiplayer: For the first time, Galactic Civilizations is a multiplayer game with full support for custom civilizations, saved multiplayer games, and much more.
  • New Battle System: Assign your ships specific roles to play in combat. You can now view fleet battles in a cinematic style to see your designs in action.
  • New Colony Manager: The location of a planetary improvement now matters. Adjacency bonuses and planetary resources make a major impact on what a planet is strong (or weak) at accomplishing.
  • Planetary Governors: Utilize individual planetary leaders to govern your worlds, deciding what improvements to build and when, which leaves you to focus on larger strategic goals.

I have always had fun in games like this, but oftentimes around turn 150 the game events cause it to slow to a crawl. Otherwise I love it.

A Classic 4X game. I have enjoyed it so far and the custom ships are killer

GC3 runs well, with not much waiting between turns. I was able to play to the end of a game on an immense-sized galaxy without encountering any performance issues, even on my fairly antiquated dual-core rig.

I did not encounter any stability issues with the release versions of GC3.

It ticks a lot of boxes in the 4X genre. It's rewarding to explore, expand, exploit and exterminate. With the recent starbase update, turns are even more streamlined as constructors of your choosing are built automatically and sent to where they're needed. You can further tweak this to suit your needs.

I found myself trying different races and even different custom races and they all seem quite fun.

Artificial Intelligence

I found that the AI players were a bit dumb on the Normal setting.

Specifically, if there's an unmet player trying to win a Technology victory, there should be an effort to find out where that player is. I made contact with the Drengin only when a survey ship went through a wormhole and ended up in their space.

Playing with tight clusters on a large map size means that the AI has a much tougher job of getting to the other side of the galaxy.

However, the AI does react adequately well when you mass a fleet with exclusively one weapon type. This means that there is now an incentive to diversify the weapons and defences on your ships.

I did not find that the AI made adequate use of ship roles, for example capital ships which are outfitted with a full load of weapons and are protected by escorts. During play it seemed that they almost always designed escort ships.

Some old exploits from GC2 still work in GC3. For example, you can lure an enemy ship to an ambush using an unarmed scout ship. It's not clear whether this scout-chasing is all the time, or only when you make it easy for the hostile ship to keep up.

Diplomacy is a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, there are modifiers which can be easily understood and considered when you are dealing with AI civs diplomatically.

For example, if you set up a trade route with a civ which has a particular ideology, civs with an opposing ideology to that civ will think poorly of you as a result - 'You are trading with an infidel.'

On the other hand, a civ which has just met you can have all sorts of negative modifiers. This is particularly prevalent among major civs, and some of these modifiers could do with a sanity check. For example, 'You are ripe for conquest' indicates that they believe you don't have a sufficiently large military to protect all of your empire. However, if you are well outside their travelling range, it scarcely matters how pathetic your military is because going to war with you would not be practical without further research and/or range extension via starbase building.

Graphically, I find this game to be very well-presented. I did feel that in ship combat the laser weapon effects could be improved upon, and engine trails need a bit of attention in those situations where a ship is turning but not moving forward, because you get odd-looking sideways engine trails.

The default ship parts and complete designs are gorgeous. There's a considerable selection of 'jewellery' parts to build your ships with.

Planet textures are very nice and there is a variety of them, from burnt-red worlds with active cores, to lush green paradise worlds.

Nebulae, gas clouds and other cosmic bodies are welcome additions which are again, quite nicely textured and animated.

There are some quality soundtracks to listen to while you're exploring and colonising the galaxy. My only criticism here is that because this is a strategy game and it can take a while to finish a game, it does get to the point where you just turn the music off for a while.

The sound effects are spot-on, not too subtle and not too obnoxious. Well, except maybe the shipyard anchor/unanchor sound!

The resources for modding are not where I think they should be. For example, the modding readme file has a glaring error - it says that if you create a folder called Game in a given mod folder and put XML files in there which add to or override definitions in the game's XML, that will work. But actually, a path of data/Game is needed instead.

The Steam Workshop for GC3 only features custom races and ship templates. Actual XML mods must be distributed and installed outside of Workshop. While I realise that Workshop integration of mods is far from simple, these days it is quite easy to overlook the efforts of modders if there is no Workshop visibility.

I was able to make some simple mods of my own work, so apart from the above reservations, the implementation of modding is okay.

This game, to me, is a serious contender for multiple playthroughs. The victory conditions are perhaps not equally good in this respect, however. I don't really look forward to pursuing another research victory in a future game, for example, but there are other ways to win and other races to try so that does allow for a significant amount of replay value.

Other features

Something that I feel is missing from GC3, and which I made quite clear I would like to see in the game, is the ability to customise the savegame/userdata folder. This could be done using a command-line argument.

Ship designs are generated automatically with the discovery of new ship component technology, whether you want them or not. This is nice for people who don't want to design ships, but not so good for the rest of us.

Ship components can be placed automatically onto well-suited hardpoints with a double-click, and there are gizmos to further customise the size and placement of ship components, which allows a degree of freedom in ship design which I have yet to see paralleled in another game with spaceship design.

Planetary improvements have an interesting adjacency system and bonus tiles play well with them. Basically, you can get extra production if you place an improvement on the right hex, or next to a similar improvement.

Furthermore, when using terraforming projects, you are allowed to choose which tile to make usable. The better the tech level of the terraforming, the bigger choice of tiles you can improve.

When making ideological choices in the game, you can gain a number of ideological traits. Normally you will need to make an ideological choice each time you colonise a new world. I'm not enthused about all of these traits, and sometimes I wish that there were alternative traits at a given level, but overall it seems to be a good mechanic.

It is possible now to see at a glance how well your fleet will do in battle against another fleet, planet defence, starbase or shipyard.

This game has a lot to offer someone looking for a 4X strategy experience. There was a long phase where I had to experiment and learn how to play well. Having learned the ropes, and with the game now on version 1.7, I have found it to be worthwhile.

While I have presented some shortcomings of the game which I feel could be addressed, I'm happy with the state of the game at the moment. I hope that Stardock's continued support of this game marks the beginning of an enduring effort to eliminate the extraterrestrial threat.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Altough the DLCs are really a shame from initial Stardock spirit (independant gaming) and are really light for their price, this is a solid 4X that can grapple you for hours, in the spirit of the old gal civs.

I've been waiting to play this game for at least two years. The Galactic Civilizations franchise is simply playable for me. Whenever I play the game it reminds me of a seriously complex and imaginative game of chess....in the middle of the Universe. Love 4X games in general and Galactic Civilizations is simply one of the best. Being turned based, Galactic Civilizations gives a lot of meat to the methodical thinker. You take your time to plot your plans for galactic conquest. Your mind is thinking 20 or more turns ahead in many instances. I've never left a review for a game before but am compelled to leave this review.

To premise my thoughts on GC3, you'll never truly experience the greatness of this game unless you've played previous versions. Even starting with GC2 and all of the expansion packs. I say this because the original game is still so easy to play once you grasp the UI.

Galactic Civilizations III offers a really great twist on an already incredible concept. The new game seems quite more involved than the previous game. The toggle between tasks on each turn, for instance, is extremely intuitive to game play compared to previous versions. It allows for one to consider each move carefully and individually rather than collectively, as before. For example, the new Galactic Civilizations offers a nice change to mining. It actually combines the star base and mining ships into one. But the mining is so much more important this time. You have to collect resources to build advanced options in colony building and ships too. Though I completely love GC2, the miners were mostly on auto pilot the entire game. You could build more and faster ships to complete their tasks, but one never really was able to process the true value of mining ships in previous versions. There are other examples along these lines.

The UI seems to have cut the "fat" off of its predecessor. It runs more lean. But there are other things to focus on. The important things. And in that sense, the developers have made it easier to manage.

However, there is one huge complaint I have. Ship building. In GC2, ship building was like putting together a Lego space ship, on a very minimal scale, but none the less incredibly cool. The new game doesn't seem to have those capabilities. And if it does, I haven't figured it out in 20 hours of game play.

In summary, if you are a Galactic Civilizations fan, this is a no brainer. You'll love it. It's different but the pieces are the same. If you have never played previous versions, no worries. You'll need to take your time to get the concepts down. As long as you are fairly patient and love long term strategy this game is incredible.

Like I said, I've been waiting for some time to play this game. I generally give a game at least six months to patch and fix the bugs before I buy it. I was content with GC2 and a few others waiting to check out GC3. Can't say it enough, it is great game but it builds on previous concepts. Not to say that one couldn't pick this game up without previous knowledge of the series, but it will require you to patiently develop an understanding of how intricate the game can get.

Thanks to the folks at Stardock for sticking this game out. They took something incredibly great and made it better. And that is something that we rarely get in the video franchise world.

An adictive game and fun to play, the ongoing development of the games adds an exra dimension to it's game play. I would like to see more 'player' agumentation to the game and a wider scope for race and ship design with more tech tree's being made available. Overall excellent fun.

Fun but frustrating. Its very easy to put hours and hours into a game then realize you are screwed and cant win. Actually MOST of my games have ended up that way. Upgrading starbase defences is marginal at best. Hig end defenses are resource intensive and not effective. The AI gets odd perks that I really dont think they need. Its a games that i have tried very hard to enjoy and havent really been able to yet.

Have played for about 6 hours now and I am sorry to say that this 4X game is not anything decent in my eyes. I have played Sins of a Solar empire and Master of Orion and they easily take this to the house in playability and entertainment.

Waste of money overall and still having trouble getting it back as it takes more than the 2 hours to even get a feel for this game and Steam is being stingy.

As a big fan of Galactic Civilizations 2, I came into GalCiv3 with the understanding that it was going to be very similar. That is fine, in this case, because similar to "good" is likely to be "good".

The biggest issue with GalCiv3 is that some of the information is simply missing. It could very well be that it is available and I don't know how to access it, but if so, even that is a problem.

I enjoy the game, and happily play it while at the same time hoping for a more complete version.

I do seriously love this game but the music is the most annoying thing ever. The soundtrack sounds great, but in the game a 15 second clip of what sounds like a cheap rip off of the theme from Stargate SG-1 is essentially repeated for hours and hours and hours.

While I miss the lovely battle scenes of the second game, Galagtic Civ III definitely ramped up the gameplay with new ship modules, more stuff to place into a custom race, and the United Planets aspect of things. I have nothing to say on the multiplayer, though. Haven't tried it.

Pro's : Very good gameplay, rewarding ship designs, deep and interesting tech tree, solid graphics, decent strategic layout, grand scale.

Cons : End game gets repetitive, major ship hull design changes can get annoying and its hard to make it just right, major slowness late game on huge and above maps.

Conclusion : Pros certainly outweigh the cons, I have been enjoying this game and despite being a little bit shallow on the end game, it keeps me coming back :)

In and of itself, I would narrowly consider this a good game.

However, I write to note that when compared with Gal Civ II, which I played extensively, there seems to be little more in GCIII than an updated UI and cleaner graphics. One must buy a dlc to unlock 2 of the major races that were originally in II. I followed the emails and other updates during development, and also participated in the beta, and I feel that GCIII is more of a cash cow than anything else. There was a ship designer in GCII; they emphasized that it would be improved in III before release, but it is almost identical to that of GCII.

This game is worth $40 only if they gave you all the dlc; buy it on sale, or from a cdkey site for a discount. Otherwise, enjoy GCII which feels more realistic and balanced in terms of AI behavior. It's amazing how they can make $50 of dlc for a $40 dollar update of GCII.

I leave with this: is it fun? Yes. Is it more fun than GCII? Not really. If you enjoy masochistically having your wallet ransacked, this is your opportunity. I have liked Stardock in the past, especially with Sins of a Solar Empire, among other games. They, unfortunately, now resemble EA or Activision.

A very good game with a few flaws. I really enjoy playing this game, and it has some very good features. These include and are not limited to extraordinary graphics and a built-in ship designer that is second to none, as well as faction creation that is excellent. There is also a very nice feature that allows play on smaller maps if you have a lower powered computer, so that you aren't locked out of the game just because you don't have a top of the line gaming machine.

There are a few big flaws: first, there needs to be a reset to defaults button, badly. After playing a number of games, your galaxy setup will probably be way off from the start, and this can be a problem if your games have been going in the wrong direction and you want to backtrack without losing customized ship designs and the like. Second, there needs to be more options for the type of galaxy in a meaningful way. Although there are multiple galaxy types, in reality the planetary and star distribution don't have signifcant differences except in two cases, especially in smaller maps.

On the whole, I would recommend this game to anybody looking for creative ship design, a generally good play experiece, beautiful graphics, and the patience to work around the flaws.

If you loved GalCivII you'll like the improvements. Many of the best elements from the earlier franchise made it into the modern version. Biggest complaint is the dialogue, both poorly written and filled with spelling errors - at the premium price (even waiting for $20 off) there is no excuse. In GalCiv II the options presented when founding a colony were written in a way that aided gameplay, but in GalCiv III I keep wishing they'd end their paragraphs a sentence earlier.

Other than this bother, it is a fun and improved version worthy of its namesake.

By far the largest, most immersive, and complex strategy game available. Beautiful graphics up to 4K resolution and possibly higher.

The size of the largest maps put to shame every predecessor. I mean, these things actually resemble small galaxies in scope. I think the one I'm playing on has over a thousand solar systems, and I'm not quite sure if I picked the largest size available.

You might infer from the previous information that, despite streamlining and concerted efforts to fight excessive micromanagement that was rampant in the previous game (and, really, any game of this type), playing on the larger maps will still require lots of time per turn, excellent memory, and a sharp eye for enemy actions. I've probably put.....20 hours or more into my current match, and I would consider it to still be in the early-mid-game stage.

The ship designer is back, retaining all of its former glory and with even more features. The funky variable-hardpoint system of the previous game has been reevaluated, so that parts artificially labeled as 'small', 'medium', etc. generally have the same number of spots now, cleaning things up a bit. The tech tree feels a bit less expansive than before, but still outclasses most competing games.

Anyways, back to playing GC3 - and back to enjoying brilliant explosions, highly detailed planets and planetesimals, and of course some damn good gameplay.

Edit: Oh, I forgot to mention - the AI that shamed Deep Blue is back to put you in your place again, though some others playing have mentioned that it might not be quite as cunning anymore.

Great depth and breadth to the game. Each civilization plays subtely differently to the other. Quite addictive once you get into it. Really enjoy it, and i would definitely recomend it to others who like strategy games.

Very great, but I would like to suggest a starbase designer as well.

What I like - The workshop is going to make this game really great eventually

What I dislike - I cant think of a single thing that is different from Galactic Civ II, which I played hundreds of hours. It looks the same, plays the same, research is the same. Maybe the campaign is different but who plays that anyway? Its all about the custom game.

I would only recommend this game to new comers when its on budget as it could be disappointing on first look, it takes hard hard work to become compentent at this game.

As a owner of all the olders Galactic Civilizations I figured jumping into this one would be easy but nope had a lot of new things to learn about this edition and version of the game franchise.

While I did get all of the add on packs for it I think more could have been in them and the game in the way or races, battle strageties and even seeing the take over ground battles on the planets like the intro video shows. It's a turn based game with little live action or cut scene videos that is basicly an upgrade to all of the old versions of the game.

I'm not a huge fan of Multiplayer on-line gaming so playing it single player the AI's are predictable over time in attitudes and intent and easy to figure out who you can be friends with and who will always end up and enemy.

If you do not create on your own new verion builds of ships as you gain the tech in reaserch all of your ships become obsolite and quickly end up defeated with the AI's increasing abilities.

While I have been a firm suporter and owner of StarDock games this is the last version of this Title I will invest in. If I had never owned or played the older ones I would be fine so first time owners and buyers chances are you will enjoy it if you are not a live action game fan and more a strategest.

While I miss the lovely battle scenes of the second game, Galagtic Civ III definitely ramped up the gameplay with new ship modules, more stuff to place into a custom race, and the United Planets aspect of things. I have nothing to say on the multiplayer, though. Haven't tried it.
