. I do the same below anyway, but I do so my way. That thread might be more help than I am either way. Now, with that out of the way...
I definitely recommend this game to anyone interested in a Terraria-esque game that lets you upgrade your character with tons of abilities boosted and acquired with experience points you get for doing things under specific categories (Attacking, Magic, Crafting and Resource Gathering).
Anyone would probably look at this game and immediately think of Terraria/Starbound, which, in a lot of ways, it is rather similar gameplay (not so much the visuals of course). But even then there are a couple of things that makes it as solid as Terraria-esque games while adding its own things to it to make it different enough, which I'll just list up below:
- The game allows you to apply upgrades to specific abilities for your character (like I said above in the beginning).
- It has unique enemies which work differently and scale their strengths and difficulty to your own progress to keep you on your toes.
- You use individual items for two things: simply using them for whatever they're usable for (an action like placing a block type, a weapon you use, or simply something that's only a crafting material) and using the item in a Research Desk, which allows you find out about hidden recipes by using up the item each time you research it until you've found out everything it's usable for. You will only be able to craft something once you've researched every ingredient that's tied to its creation, which promotes a sense of trying to keep mining for ores to see what they can create (which isn't only armor and weapons), beating up monsters for their drops, and simply trying to explore more and more until you find something new even after thinking you were done researching every single item so far.
- There's different biomes and within each of them are completely different enemies with different strengths, attacks and attack patterns. You've always got to be cautious as not every monster can be dealt with the same way you would others.Added in an edit:
- There's some pretty cool decorative items, which allows for you to "pimp out" your house/castle/whatever you build beyond what games of this type allow for.
That's about it from what I can think of right now. I will add things above by editing the post if I ever think of something else to add.
Besides the good stuff, there's always not-so-good things that come with it. I'll just list these up as well since it's easier:
- The movement can feel really clunky. It's not that annoying or anything, but it's certainly noticeable, especially to people that have played Terraria/Starbound before this and got used to their smoother feel.
- There are no NPCs or anyone to interact with. This is only a matter of my opinion, though. I feel like this game could put its character stat development mechanics to better use if you could use them for quests or something along those lines. Merely strengthening your character in the areas they have available doesn't mean much if there isn't anything you can use its full extent on.
- A lot of things in the game look pretty detailed, but at the same time the art style feels lacking. Most of the sprites look a tad bland because of the way they were shaded, which kinda looks pillow shaded. The same goes for the tiles and whatnot, but all of this is easily ignored. The game is still solid and fun and this little bit is mostly me being unnecessarily nitpicky. It doesn't take any of the fun away or anything, thankfully.
- Resource gathering can take its sweet time, especially when you're only starting. At the very least you -might- find yourself with an upgraded tool soon enough, and even if you have to wait a while on getting a better one, the ability to boost your tool swinging speed and power is pretty damn helpful to compensate for a little bit (and even when you get better tools as you go, it's still just as helpful having those little boosts in performance). It can also take a while in another way: ores you're looking for being hard to find. Iron ore is pretty tough to look for, especially in bunches, despite being third-rate material (first being wood and second being copper).
Once again, that's about it for what I can think of on this, and, with that, I finish my review. Just like with the pros I listed up, I will add things above by editing the post if I ever think of something else to add if necessary.
TL;DR: Crea is a solid game that takes its own things and meshes them with a little bit of the 2D Sandbox gameplay Terraria laid down. It all works greatly but could definitely use some touching up here and there. Nonetheless, the game is definitely worth getting. It's got promise just like it does a nice community (devs included), all of which will make this game a solid title once it's ready to take its Early Access diapers off for good.
Hopefully everything I pointed out here is helpful enough for you guys. The game's definitely worth getting even in its current state, so I say get to it.
