I am someone who was (and probably still is) a Terraria fanatic. I've put 1500+ hours into Terraria. I liked Minecraft a lot, too. I love open world games that are full of exploration, lots of things to do, and lots of loot to drown yourself in. 2d side scrolling games like this tend to be called Metroidvania games.
Many games have tried to de-throne Terraria as the next great Metroidvania game; Darkout, Edge of Space, Windforge, Asteria, Starbound to name a few. Many games have fallen seriously short and their pages are filled with mixed or negative reviews. Some are still in development and are actually becoming good games, but Terraria still remains king of Metroidvania Mountain.
I first got Crea many months ago and it was rough, unpolished and hard to play. I waited. MANY updates have come out since then so I decided to give it another try a few weeks ago. I am glad I did.
Crea has an in-depth crafting system that actually takes a bit of thought to figure out. You don't just have materials, you have crafting methods. They call it Chaos Crafting. There's a variety of crafting techniques to apply while you are crafting something. It's up to you to find a combination that works well. If you do, you can get some amazing results.
The enemies in Crea are likewise as well thought out. You can't just run up and whack and enemies like you do to Terraria's slimes. Enemies in this game have different attacks, but they all have certain patterns that you can figure out.
What the game needs most is variety in what the player experiences. Once you craft that next tier of armor and weapons you're off to do more of the same, just in a higher level area, battling the same monsters who are simply higher level. The game does have biomes, but as of this review, they're only surface biomes that don't mean a whole lot at the moment.
However, the game is solid enough and enjoyable enough that the $15 price tag is well worth it at this point. Combat is a blast in this game. Since development is still very much underway who knows what we might see for the biomes or maybe even new, different underground zones.
Crea has a ways to go before it could be a contender for king of Metroidvania Mountain. It's not there yet. It's got a ways to go. But it's certainly headed in the right direction.
