Kid writes a review, and isn't too sure what to say. Ten outa ten, best game of the year, or a fine work of art, words of praise that's hollow with no real meaning. You could say this kid wants to write about the solid gameplay, engaging story, beautiful world, amazing soundtrack, and a fine narration. But the kid knows better... The game left him feeling satisfied in the end, no one can say he had a bad time. But all phrases and words just don't cut it for the kid, so he'll leave it like this, Bastion made him happy like a Scumbag with a full stomach.

My review of Bastion will be based on 4 categories: Performance, Gameplay, Graphics, and Story.

Like every other indie game out there, Bastion offers just the frameworks required to run the game. Aside from the anti-aliasing, adjustable resolution, and V-Sync option, there really isn't any eye-catching graphics settings to tinker with and adjust. Just a few things to note though:
  • Method of anti-aliasing not specified. Only goes up to 4x.
  • Max resolution is 1920x1200 or 16:10 aspect ratio. On my AMD PC, VSR doesn't work.

Performance on a FX-6300 processor, R9 270 GPU, and 8 GB of RAM at 1080p yields a constant 60 FPS without hitches whatsoever. Initially, the game will run at 40+ or 50+ FPS on different PCs unless the game is launched with the -nofixedstep parameter which kind of unlocks the FPS but anything above 60 messes with the animations. Therefore, It is highly recommended that V-Sync is enabled to fix the issue .No bugs experienced during playthroughs but I did encounter 1 silent crash while alt+tabbing. Bastion's gameplay is very casual yet offers enough challenges and good incentives for players who are willing to take it on. You only have only one goal in the game; complete the titular Bastion by gathering 'cores' and 'shards' which gives the player access to different buildings and establishments offering a variety of useful gameplay elements. Yes, you read that right. Gameplay elements like having the ability to change your loadout, equip passive stat bonuses, and being able to buy things require you to play the game to a certain point and build the corresponding establishment tied to the gameplay element. It may look like a progression-halting experience at first but since the game is linear and Supergiant Games did a good job of not serving everything at the table at once, it's safe to say that without this small feature, the game would be less of a joy to play.

Some things to take note of:
  • For those who are so used to games with fast running characters, well, better get used to controlling turtle-like characters since Bastion's main protagonist runs like one. He's slow, he skips like an excited schoolboy on the first day of classes, and he walks like the kind of guy who has a heavy load on his shoulders even though he's only carrying a few spare change in his pockets. Good thing that the dodge roll covers a wide space and offers a temporary speed boost so players will likely find themselves rolling to no end just to get from point a to point b at a much faster pace. To be fair, in defense of the slowness, it actually makes sense for the small and tight levels since Bastion is set in the sky and one wrong move will make you fall since there are no boundaries. For the big and open areas though, a sprint button could have remedied the problem.
  • The player can opt to choose between melee weapons, ranged, or both. Due to the limited selection of weapons and skills to choose from, players may find themselves either favoring one weapon over the others or changing their loadout according to their playstyle.
  • Weapons can be upgraded with materials found throughout the game.
  • While the game has a set difficulty, later down the road, the player can build a shrine in the Bastion which is used to invoke the gods and increase the aformentioned by adding a whole lot of challenges to the gameplay. you have 10 gods to invoke and 10 effects that can appear in combat ranging from small bombs dropping from enemies after you defeat them (the number one cause of death for me), a huge chance that enemies become invincible for a short while, and enemies becoming more faster and stronger than they were before. The shrine is purely an optional feature but playing through the game with invoked gods nets you a larger gain of experience points with a max of up to 75% more XP.
  • The game has a number of enemy varieties. A strong point of Bastion's combat lies in the fact that different enemies with their individual attack patterns will gang up on you everytime. Not once did Bastion lose the action and tension and even makes it more exciting thanks to the shrine. Just imagine all the bombs dropping off the 20+ enemies surrounding you!
  • The game has a leveling system though the character has no stats like attack, defense, etc. and it only reaches up to level 10 with the bonuses being adding +2 to your health and unlocking more slots for different spirits/alcohol.
  • Spirits are basically passive stat bonuses which grant a variety of effects like adding +10 to your health or the ones with a tradeoff like giving you +10% critical hit chance at the cost of -10 health. Though low in variety and quantity, the effects that they grant is an absolute game changer.

One of the most beautiful art styles to ever grace gaming. Bastion's hand-drawn assets is very detailed, colorful, and one-of-a-kind. And I like how the life-filled graphics contrasts with the overall plot of the game where the world's last survivors are on the tip of their toes from danger.

Bastion takes place in the floating city of Caelondia which was once a thriving city of progress and innovation before 'The Calamity' happened - an unexplainable event that somehow managed to tear the city apart and made its citizens immobile and lifeless. The once lively city became the face for ruin and desolation just because of a single event that no one can explain why it happened. You play as the 'Kid' who wakes up to find that he's the only survivor in a city full of blank stares and ever-present danger.

The story and everything that you do is narrated by a very smooth-talking person called Rucks - a disembodied voice from the sky during your travels and a friendly face when staying in the titular Bastion. From the actions that you make, to the weapons that you choose, and just about everything that you see in the floating city of Caelondia and its outskirts is narrated by Rucks. He serves as both guide and tutor to the player, helping him understand what is happening in the world while giving subtle hints and clues on how the player should proceed if he should ever encounter a problem. As you fight you way through crowds of enraged enemies and trudge through unfamiliar territory, you'll hear him comment on the places that you visit and the history behind it, how the world lived and worked before 'The Calamity' happened, and how everything will be alright despite the dilemma that they're currently facing.

Bastion starts at the middle of the overall story, right in the heart of the actual problem, and fills the missing pieces and backstories through optional dreamscapes, items that you gather in the desolated city of Caelondia, and Rucks' occational narration. The 'Kid' and Rucks' goal is simple. Finish the Bastion with 'Cores' and 'Shards' and figure out what to do from there.

Bastion's story is very unique because of the narration as a tool to tell its story. Through the words of an unknown and disembodied voice, a coherent story is formed just by listening - something that's lacking in video games today where everyone seem to focus more on the showing rather than the telling.

Ah, good times. Beautiful graphics and soundtracks made me fell in love in the first sight. Smacking monsters while listening to a soothing voice, telling you an intriguing story... The only downside to that is you can't really focus on the story when you're busy dealing with enemies.

But whatever, you can just go and play it again. Totally worth it.

Bastion is an action role-playing video game produced by independent developer Supergiant Games and published by Warner Bros. In the game, the player controls "the Kid" as he moves through floating, fantasy-themed environments and fights enemies of various types. It features a dynamic voiceover from a narrator, and is presented as a two-dimensional game with an isometric camera and a hand-painted, colorful art style. Bastion‍ '​s story follows the Kid as he collects special shards of rock to power a structure, the Bastion, in the wake of an apocalyptic Calamity.

Interesting game, that could take the heart of any kind of gamer. The story isn't very memorable, but the music and illustrations are beautiful. Bastion is pure action game. Reminds me of Transistor. The story could also be a bit longer. To sum up the game is great. You should try it when this game gets on sales.

Bastion is a polarizing game. Basically, I feel confident in saying you will either love this game to bits and find yourself writing essays about how brilliant and deep and awesome this game really is, or find it one of the most obscenely, dangerously overrated, yet pretty good-looking and fine-sounding, piece of pretentious indie [you know that word] you'll ever play.

Luckily for you, Oh Revered Prospective Buyer, you don't need to rely on the confusing cacophony of opinions of other people to figure out which camp you'll find yourself in in. Like, don't like, and wait... why? For, you see, O Might One, this game is endowed with the Mystical Power of The Demo.

Demos are strange beasts and too often misleading ones as well, willfully tricking the Player. But this will not be the case for Bastion: you will either think this game has the most boring minute-to-minute gameplay experience of the isometric action RPGs you ever had the terrible misfortune to play, or that it'll be to you about as good an invention as The Revered Sliced Bread, maybe even a slice better.

It doesn't matter which button I'm going to press when I am done writing, because obviously the majority thinks I'm the minority and thus this one single vote is simply a drop in the ocean and won't matter one single bit. That is fine and dandy as it gives me a chance to be completely honest without incurring in any unwarranted backlash, isn't that true Almighty Community?

You won't downvote this <cough>review, because while I almost dread every single hour I spent on it (, I'm still encouraging people to be open minded instead of trusting my judgment blindly, as it were The Word, and try the demo for themselves. Which you should really do: you have very little to lose and much to gain.
