My review of Bastion will be based on Gameplay and Story.

Before we start, let's get the technical stuff out of the way first since that category is what most PC players are keeping an eye out for. For a list of known issues and their respective fixes, please visit the Bastion Support FAQ as provided by the developers.

Now, take note that the game will greet you with:
  • Lackluster graphics options. Since Bastion is an indie game, it's understandable that the devs will only provide the player with the frameworks required to run the game. The only graphics settings available are anti-aliasing which only goes up to 4x and doesn't specify what method is used, resolution with a max value of 1920x1200, and v-sync.
  • A 40+ or 50+ FPS cap that depends on what kind of setup you have. Starting the game with a -nofixedstep parameter will enable Bastion to run at 60 FPS. Anything above that will break the game's animations.
Moving on!

Have you played, watched, or heard of games like Diablo and Torchlight? Well, Bastion is exactly like those titles - Action-RPGs as they are called and they're notorious for their loot-heavy gameplay and combat with waves of enemies. The only difference is that this game is tamer and far simpler than those two - in fact, it's so simple that even kids can complete this game if they just focus their hyperactive minds on this one title. The gameplay mechanics are easy to understand, the RPG elements aren't complex, and the progression is great. Overall, Bastion is pretty much a breeze to play through! But that doesn't mean that it has no offerings for the most hardcore of players. You see, Bastion doesn't have a set difficulty and the challenge often comes from fighting a variety of enemies with different attack patterns. To remedy the plea of an audience looking for more action, Bastion allows the player to build an optional Shrine which offers a passive boost in XP and more money drops in exchange for harder enemies and a weaker main character. Definitely one of the strongest aspects of the game because it can quickly turn a slow-paced session into a batteground that requires your absolute concentration. So whether you're a casual player who came to experience the amazing story or a more experienced gamer who wants to see bombs come out of enemies' bodies when they die, Bastion has got you covered.

Being the story-centric game that it is, Bastion takes liberties with the usual gameplay formula in order to get its message across. Some people won't like it and may think of it as pretentious and gimmicky. Some people will praise it and will think that it stands out from the crowd. Do take note of this potential buyer because it may sell you the game or turn you off. You see, gameplay features aren't available from the get go - they're built like the Shrine. This is a far cry from your usual ARPG where each town has all of the necessities that the player will ever need right then and there. Simple features like having the ability to change your loadout and equip status buffs are locked behind a progression system that requires the player to complete a level first before it can be built and used. If you're not a fan of things being unlocked one by one and through a chore, then this game may not be for you because it's no secret that Bastion starts off very slowly and only picks up during the latter half of the game.

Bastion takes place in the floating city of Caelondia which was once a thriving city of progress and innovation before 'The Calamity' happened - an unexplainable event that somehow managed to tear the city apart and made its citizens immobile and lifeless. The once lively city became the face for ruin and desolation just because of a single event that no one can explain why it happened. You play as the 'Kid' who wakes up to find that he's the only survivor in a city full of blank stares and ever-present danger.

The story and everything that you do is narrated by a very smooth-talking person called Rucks - a disembodied voice from the sky during your travels and a friendly face when staying in the titular Bastion. From the actions that you make, to the weapons that you choose, and just about everything that you see in the floating city of Caelondia and its outskirts is narrated by Rucks. He serves as both guide and tutor to the player, helping him understand what is happening in the world while giving subtle hints and clues on how the player should proceed if he should ever encounter a problem.

Bastion starts at the middle of the overall story, right in the heart of the actual problem, and fills the missing pieces and backstories through optional dreamscapes, items that you gather in the desolated city of Caelondia, and Rucks' occational narration. The 'Kid' and Rucks' goal is simple. Finish the Bastion with 'Cores' and 'Shards' and figure out what to do from there.

Bastion's story is very unique because of the narration as a tool to tell its story. Through the words of an unknown and disembodied voice, a coherent story is formed just by listening - something that's lacking in video games today where everyone seem to focus more on the showing rather than the telling.

And there you have it.

Bastion is an isometric action RPG with hand painted art.

You're "the Kid", a survivor of the Calamity. After you wake up, you do as supposed after a disaster and head to the Bastion, there you find out the Bastion needs cores to work as intended, and you are sent to explore what remains of the world in search of these. During your joruney, you'll face countless enemies, you'll explore land no one has set foot on before, you'll also know more about the Calamity and when the time comes... Forget that, it'd just ruin the surprise.

Long story short, this game has beautiful graphics, gorgeous music, a fancy narrator and flawless gameplay, I'll just go ahead and say it, this ladies and gentleman is pefection.

Finally got back to finish this, and the still wonderful and charming little game even managed to draw me in for a New Game Plus.

Beyond being fun to play, with an array of weapons and gear you can suit to your playing style and preferences, it also has a great atmosphere with musical pieces and moments that will make your heart hum, together with a superb narrator that will make you fall in love with storytelling all over again.

Fantastic game and fully recommended.

There is no way you wouldn't love it.
Bastion is a beautiful game in which each element fits properly.
  • The hack and slash gameplay is fun and amplified by leveling up your character, improving your weapons, and making the game harder through idols. There's so much to discover.
  • The story is traditional stuff, but I was wrapped up in the experience from the main menu to the credits thanks to leaderboards, easy to navigate menus, and more.
  • Just a beautiful world. The characters are detailed, the colors are rich, and the world forming underneath the kid's feet is a nice touch.
  • The sound effects, the score, and the narrator (Cunningham's sensational debut role) are all excellent.
  • The game after the first time tells you that there are still many things to do before you eventually turn it off.
Try it for yourself and fall in love.
