Patch 1.20 - Changelog

With Patch 1.20 we introduce a number of improvements to the base game and Hearts of Stone, including a major HUD overhaul and additional menu options. We've also implemented a number of fixes like the missing interaction from chests in quest titled ‘Scavenger Hunt: Wolf School Gear’ and more! You'll find the full list of changes below:

IMPROVEMENTS

  • Adds book titled 'A Miraculous Guide to Gwent' which displays number of gwent cards missing from player's base-game collection and information on where to find them, thus facilitating completion of achievement titled Collect 'Em All. Tome in question can be obtained either from gwent playing scholar in Prologue or from merchant near St. Gregory's Bridge in Gildorf district of Novigrad.
  • Adds option to display herb names above available interactions.
  • Adds option in Options/Gameplay to enable enemy level upscaling. If foes are too easy to defeat due to level difference, upscaling will render them a challenge. Change will not affect experience point gain, loot, or quest rewards. Option can be enabled or disabled at any time, even during combat (however, Vitality/Essence of foes is then fully restored).
  • Adds option in Options/Gameplay to disable automatic drawing and sheathing of sword.
  • Increases incidence of, and thus chances of finding, several monster-based ingredients required for crafting high level alchemy formulae.
  • Improves Player Statistics panel, adding maneuverable Geralt model. Improves visuals in panel for better readability.
  • Adds new functionality to books and scrolls. When first collected, they can be read immediately using single button without need of navigating to Inventory panel. All found but not yet read books and scrolls are stored in Quest Items and Other categories. Once read, books and scrolls can be sold as their content is saved in Books section of Glossary.
  • Improves overall visuals in Character Development panel.
  • Improves Inventory whereby items are divided into additional subcategories within their grids: weapons and armor; oils, potions and bombs; quest items and others; food and equestrian gear; crafting and alchemy. Additionally, introduces redesign of tooltips enabling their resizing with single button. Also, item comparison is easier than ever given addition of summary of changes in stats.
  • Improves Inventory navigation when using gamepad. Slots are divided into sections and right stick can be used to jump between them.
  • Improves Crafting panel in merchant shops. Adds option to purchase missing diagram components directly from Crafting panel when talking to merchant, as well as clearer descriptions and option to resize item descriptions.
  • Introduces redesign of Repair panel in merchant shops. Adds single button enabling players to repair all equipped items.
  • Improves Remove Upgrade panel in merchant shops.
  • Improves Quick Access Menu whereby it can be accessed in one of two modes, with action either paused or slowed depending on button used.
  • Adds functionality whereby crossbow bolts can be switched via Quick Access Menu rather than being equipped from Inventory.
  • Adds counter for bombs and crossbow bolts to Quick Access Menu.
  • Improves region maps by adding pin filtering, more intuitive quest tracking, and a region overview for faster navigation.
  • Adds three new custom pins allowing players to mark areas for future reference.
  • Improves Adrenaline Bar which better displays number of stored Adrenaline Points and their status.
  • Improves display and behavior of Buffs, displayed in more intuitive manner showing time left, strength percentage, stacks, charges, or permanence where applicable. Buff icons now blink for approx. 10 seconds before expiration. For improved visibility, names and exact expiration times for all effects are only visible when Quick Access menu is active.
  • Changes icons for decoctions, rendering them recognizable at first glance.
  • Changes icons for oils, rendering them recognizable at first glance.
  • Changes gwent card icons in shops, rendering factions recognizable at first glance.
  • Changes icons for mutagens.
  • Adds feature whereby equipment exceeding player character level can be previewed on character.
  • Improves sorting in Journal whereby active quest tab is always open and tracked quest is at top of quest list.
  • Improves quest item visuals so that Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine quest items are now tagged with blue and red exclamation points, respectively.

GWENT
  • Quest titled Collect 'Em All is now marked as failed if player does not succeed in collecting Milva, Vampire Bruxa and Dandelion gwent cards during gwent tournament in quest titled A Matter of Life and Death.

  • Fixes visual issue whereby guards holding torches would have inverse kinematics when animated.
  • Fixes PS4-specific visual issue whereby texture of water puddles would not fade properly.

GAMEPLAY
  • Updates description of Superior Blizzard potion. Potion now slows time for a short period whenever an enemy is slain. Additionally, during this period actions do not deplete Stamina if 3 Adrenaline Points are available.

  • Fixes issue whereby Flood of Anger skill could endlessly increase Sign intensity.

This has got to be my all-time favorite game. Because I couldn't get into to Skyrim and it's modded mess, Witcher 3 fell upon my lap and I got completely hooked. I played through this game in maybe a week, and wished it was longer. The DLCs were worth the cash as well, due to the fact CD Projekt RED put every once of effort into it as they did the base game.

______________________________________________________________

Pros:
- Geralt, in general: Amazing character, although I guess not substancial developement. Along with all the other characters in this game, each were unique and had thought put into. Having the option of a snide remark, or a threat was just so fun.

- Graphics: The greatest graphics in my opinion in an open world game, easily. Beautiful world and detail put into this game made it all the better.

- Coding: Although many didn't notice, the coding of this game was just so well done. With all the beauty and detail put into the game, I still didn't stutter in Novigrad. Coders put so much time and effort into making this game a masterpiece.

- Side Quests: The amount of effort put into each indivisual side quest shocked me. More specifically Blood & Wine, I had myself playing side quests all night, when I hadn't even started the main questline.

- Romance: I always love a bit of romance in my games, whether it's forced or a choice. Along with the sex scenes, which everyone loves.

- Choices: This is probably the biggest reason toward my love of this game. You had so many options that changed the outcome of the endings in the base game, and DLCs. I felt I had the power, and it made me feel more immersed than I already was.

- Combat: Absolutely amazing combat mechanics, couldn't have been happier with it. You always have to be doing different things, and it isn't plain and simple. Crafting aspects to help you toward different foes, and other items such as bombs made it fun as well.

- Emotions: ((SPOILER)) My favorite part of the game, when Geralt is hugging Ciri after he thinks she's gone. Just an amazing cutescene that made me tear up, and love the characters even more.

______________________________________________________________

Cons:

- Clunky movement: When outside of combat, for example, finding a place of power. You have to go through obstacles that made me extremely frusterated when Geralt wouldn't move to my key press.

- Difficulty of Bosses: Eredin, Dettlaff, and other bosses were seriously not hard. Eredin especially was easy, I didn't take any damage. It wasn't on my end, but the games. Made it too easy to beat certain bosses. Had more trouble with groups of lower levels.

______________________________________________________________

Overall, I love this game. Would play it over and over again, and Team Triss all the way.

Foreword:

To fully understand my review and to enjoy The Witcher 3, I highly recommend playing through at LEAST the second game, if not both of the previous titles. It is truly a memorable series of highs and even more highs. If there's one thing I respected and enjoyed most about this series, it's that each title improved significantly upon the others in terms of mechanics and polish. This review is also SPOILER-FREE.

*Shall we begin now?*

It has finally arrived. One of the most hyped releases in recent memory and personally, THE most hyped game of all time is finally (finally!) available on store shelves and through digital download. Ever since finishing The Witcher 2 in the fall of 2011, I've been eagerly anticipating the third installment of this marvelous franchise.

And boy was it worth it. It is extremely rare that a game delivers on its promises, let alone exceed expectations. The Witcher 3 has managed to do both. Due to the level of hype and publicity it has received, it only just managed to cross the finish line uncontested, but the journey itself is quite remarkable.

The geniuses at CD Projekt RED will take you across dark, swampy lands to bright, flourishing cities, and even grant you access to islands to travel between - an area unlike the rest of the game map. Without any spoilers, one segment of the game takes you to environments that really, really make you wonder. The scenery is breathtaking and evokes an actual sense of immersion. This unprecedented sense of engagement is a result of the perfect culmination of creativity in quests, memorable characters, and believable socio-political dynamics reacting and interacting within a gritty, realistic medieval fantasy world.

The characters have always been a strong suit of the series and this time is no exception. The people inhabiting this world all seem to have a story to tell, and one you want to hear. They make the world a place worth exploring and learning about. Dialogue is something you look forward to in this game, and rightfully so. Admittedly, however, as a direct comparison to Witcher 2, the main characters aren't as impactful. The likes of Roche, Dethmold, Iorveth, and Saskia (among others) stay with you for a very long time. The Witcher 3 just couldn't match its predecessor in that sense. This is mostly because of how well the second game was crafted, not because the characters this time around were lackluster. I mean, let's be honest--Ciri is pretty damn awesome.

The progression in the questline lets you play at your own pace, which works very well with the open-world. You don't feel rushed to finish certain quests, and it doesn't come at the cost of in-game immersion. The pacing is done nicely and greatly rewards those who cherish the beautiful world that has been hand-crafted for them. With that being said, the open-world aspect does somewhat detract from the main story as a whole since it lacks the drive and direction that a more linear game would have. I believe this is to be a by-product of the system itself and not because the story is weak.

As a side note, some people like to blow through the main storyline and skip the side quests. Don't do that here. Trust me. They're fun, funny, and even more fun. They're crazy, sad, and everything in between. Make sure you don't skip them!

Though some may disagree, the combat works well. The interplay between "melee" (sword), "ranged" (crossbow), and "magic" (sign) combat is executed superbly. Geralt reacts timely and feels alive. The enemies don't stand around waiting to die, and you certainly can't afford to stand still yourself. It punishes the lazy and rewards the methodical. With most RPGs, once you get to a certain level of strength, all enemies seem easy, but you won't reach that plateau until you've played through quite a bit. Plus, there are several difficulties.

The presentation of the game is incredibly refined. Some may point toward a "downgrade", but this game is still hands-down the best looking RPG to date. For an open-world RPG of this size and scope, it's not even close. If CD Projekt RED says the graphics needed to be adjusted to account for the fidelity of the overall fluidity and responsiveness of the game, then I trust them. They've earned that right. If you're inspecting the in-game sounds and soundtrack, The Witcher 3 is easily among the best in recent years. It's gripping, fitting, and crisp. Get yourself a good pair of headphones or a set of 5.1 speakers and thank me later.

Despite all these positives, this game isn't without its flaws. Certain movements are a bit weird, and some gameplay decisions are questionable. You may even run into a few bugs here and there, though nothing permanently damning. CD Projekt RED has done a great job in releasing patches and updates to sort out some of the launch date kinks. Their level of devotion and dedication is astonishing. At this rate, I don't think they'll even need an Enhanced Edition.

With all that's happened in this series, the (multiple) ending(s) does (do) leave something to be desired, but nonetheless the entire ride has been more than thrilling. You'll walk away from your desk with a sense of marvel, awe, and fulfillment that is often sought, but not obtained from most mediums of entertainment. And if you ever hear someone pronounce Geralt as "Guh-rall-t" or "Jerr-rall-t", you'll turn around to slam that dh'oine onto the ground because NOBODY disrepects the Master Witcher like that.

Oh, and what are you still waiting for? Buy and play this ploughin' game you wh*reson.

Breaking down some of the chief elements of a 3rd person CRPG:

1) Impossibly well written. The side quests in this game are better written than most games' main quests. It's truly absurd how well written this game is. Among the best CRPG's ever in that regard. The main plot is engaging, and the choices you make are interesting and not at all heavy-handed. I never felt the need to reload to try a different decision, because the dialog options were varied and made sense.

My only gripe on this count was they did commit the sin of having many hours between critical decisions and the payoff. So if you *DID* want a different ending for a certain story quest, it was quite possible you'd have to load a save from 80 game-play hours earlier. Some will say that's what replays are for, but I still think it's a flaw in massive story-driven games. Make the payoff closer to the critical decisions. There are too many other games to play.

2) The numbers were interesting and important without being distracting. Levels made a big difference, as talent points really mattered. There were enough builds to offer some very interesting strategies for dealing with tough fights. In fact there were a couple of fights I found it was worth drinking a potion of "talent reset" just to get the edge that a different build would offer. But the builds were balanced enough that this min-maxing didn't feel required. It did seem like it was hard to make a completely wrong choice when levelling, which is a nice balance to strike.

3) Gameplay was probably the weakest part of this amazing game. They introduced an "alternate movement" setting in the options, which did help quite a bit, but Geralt still handles like a 1970 Buick without power steering sometimes. And put him on a horse -- *eyeroll* -- might as well trot around blindfolded. And the game still suffers a bit from the age-old N64 third person perspective defects of "Oh, Geralt would totally have seen that was a cliff, but your camera angle hid that from you, so now Geralt is dead." These two facts combined made for a few truly frustrating navigation accidents. But these were rare enough that they didn't really detract from the full experience.

4) Holy. Crap. The. Duration. This game is long. No, it's like, really long. Completionists beware. Just when you think it might be escalating to the finale, nope, that's just the beginning of act 3. So I wouldn't start this game unless you have a good bit of time to spend on it.

Don't play this game before you finish other RPG's, because it will spoil you for the rest of your life.

It's hard to go back to older RPGs after you had this incredible experience.

Found some minor bugs (nothing gamebreaking), but it still is the best looking and most polished rpg i have played so far, even tho the game got casualised down alot compared to Witcher I/II

Witcher 3 is not a game.

It's another life you can live in, there are sights to be viewed, jobs to be done, friends to hang out with and family to love and protect.

Worth all $.

With 60+ hours under my belt I've still yet to complete the main quest during the time where this review was written. That's saying something. ~ 2nd July, 2016

"Lie still, lie silent, utter no cries. 'Cause the witcher brave and bold, paid in coin of gold."

Story

Follow the infamous 'White Wolf' Geralt of Rivia, as he undertakes numerous quests and errands in the expansive open world RPG that is known as The Witcher 3 : Wild Hunt. Geralt learns of an unexpected return of a familiar name & face: Cirilla, whom is in the crosshairs of the Wild Hunt for reasons that are yet to be discovered. It would be too hard and complex to fit in all the details regarding the story, but hey, as mentioned before - 60+ hours and haven't even completed a quarter of what this game has to offer.

Gameplay

The first thing I noticed when playing this game was it's beautiful setting. The infamous fortress of Khaer Morhen would be the first thing that you would lay your eyes on when starting up this game. The controls are surprisingly comfortable regardless if you're using a controller or a keyboard. I've encountered nearly zero bugs or glitches along my time, a few speech slurs here and there, but minor setbacks as they do not affect the experience that is presented before you.

Soundtrack

The Witcher 3's soundtrack is phenomenal, a perfect innovation towards medieval-fantasty music, the bards in an inn, the performers on the street and the unforgettable tune played by individual characters in the game which I'll leave to your imagination ^^ . Ambient music in the game is unparalleled compared to modern RPG's to date. It changes depending on the stance Geralt is currently in, the calm voice Joanna Lacher along with the instruments performed by Percival, or in combat the banging of drums and the strumming of string's in a solemn pace. F***ing perfect.

Combat

Simple mechanics in combat, new Witcher players are recommended to practice it a bit 'cause in overwhelming fights such as 5 - 1 it can be hard to know how to dodge or parry at the right time. But once combat is mastered, slicing through enemies should be no problem.

Combat mechanics have varied from preious Witcher titles and does requires a bit more thinking into your decisions instead of barbaric swinging. Most of the conflicts you encounter would require combinations of fast and strong attacks, dodging and countering whilst also putting your Signs to good use.

Kill, kill, parry, mash left mouse button and Q. Simple.

Conversation

Y'know, this is the thing that Fallout 4 lacks, interesting conversations. Though the option's that are presented to you when conversing with a character aren't much different, but at least it presents it's options in a way that I understand what the f*** I'm getting myself into. Witcher 3 doesn't offer this bullsh** :

Yes

No ← → Sarcasm

Maybe

It offers a lot more depth and clear designation, not the best speech setting compared to other RPG games & other Witcher titles but it's definitely a step forward from Fallout 4.

DLC & Extras

Learn from your mistakes EA you f***ing cu**s

It gives you free DLC, and expansion packs that feel like a completely different game & story. Don't be like Creative Assembly, don't be like EA, be like CD and give free DLC away :) .

Pros, cons & ratings

Pros

+Excellent setting and dynamics
+Graphics are stunning, even in the low setting! [Recommend High/Ultra though]
+Smooth & easy combat
+Free DLC ( o3o)
+Interesting & unique characters
+More than 300-400+ hours of questing (expansion packs included)
+Zero to little bugs/glitches
+ * Cough* Woo'ing the ladies

Cons

- Needs more expansion packs, I don't want it to end ;-;

Overall Verdict

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a masterpiece of masterpieces. During this age of RPG failures, this game has had its doubts and its concerns, and many have thought it to be a disaster, but it has emerged a crowning achievement regarding RPG standards and has achieved beyond.

The Witcher 3 deserves an outstanding:

10/10

A perfect game for those interested in fantasty-medieval-RPG games, given such a score regardless of its glitches and bugs.

Now excuse me while I throw my life away. Ciao.

Three Reviews for Three Demographics

For the Apathetic

For the Obtuse

& For the Meticulous

For the Apathetic: This game and trilogy has absolutely given me the best entertainment experience I’ve ever had in my short life. If you are someone who loves deep stories, if you are someone who is fascinated by european high fantasy, and if you are a person who desires to play a game that allows you to live in a complicated and unique world governed by your own decisions, this is the best gift you could ever give yourself. Be very aware that the Witcher 3 is gritty and dark, be very aware it does not adhere to the mainstream codes of morality, and take note that if you give this game a try, it will most likely consume all of your free time until you are simply forced to lay down your silver blade. Hear me with your eyes, I have never been more certain about anything else, it’s worth it, to don the garment of Geralt, the Butcher of Blaviken.

For the Obtuse: BUY THIS GAME AND THE DLC, YOU ♥♥♥♥♥…

& For the Meticulous: Most of us are in a giant rotting hole of amusement fatigue. Let’s face it, we consume so much ♥♥♥♥ its numbing to think about. Our ancestors from just the last two centuries would all have consecutive fatal strokes if they knew how much heathen filled content we have at our finger tips. However, I’m sorry Great Great Grandma, this is my life, I need to have my avatars. I need my buff pale skinned mutants.

Because we are addicted to entertainment, at times it becomes simply annoying to wade through all of the games, movies, ♥♥♥♥♥♥ music, and generic television shows to satisfyingly find something that pulls hard on our emotional heart strings and lets us live the role we desire. Not only that, but to find a work of art that genuinely takes us into another world and covers us in believable glory. This regular priced game and all of its characters gives that to me on a giant elegant platter filled with blood, sex, and vampire guts. Geralt of Rivia is the ultimate example of what it is to successfully discover perfection digging through the muck, he is a unique and a blindingly shiny diamond in the rough.

Twenty minutes into ANY of the Witcher games in the trilogy, I’ve been transported into a scenario where I’ve experienced numerous emotional ♥♥♥♥♥♥s. A feeling of intense euphoria where I am treated like an adult! Fragments of time I will never forget until the day I die. A piece of my reality that is taken far away and transformed into a fascinating dream. With Witcher 3 ‘The Wild Hunt’, you feel baptized in the unholy waters of an otherworldly creation… AND THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT I WANT!

Thank you CD Projekt RED & Thank you Andrzej Sapkowski

Perfection.

Ocassionally unstable perfection.

Brace yourselves dear readers (count: 0) and fleeting glancers (count: who knows), for this game has supplanted Deus Ex: Human Revolution as my favourite PC game of all time.

I say this game is perfect, because in my mind it is. I don't mean to say it is utterly void of faults - as I mentioned already it has a few problems with crashes, and some character models are dismayingly behind those of more prominent components to our experience - but as an RPG game, as a gaming experience, as a fantasy experience and as an audiovisual experience I have never touched any game so utterly enjoyable in all my years of gaming.

You know what, people get far too easy a ride saying graphics aren't everything. Those people are full of it: graphics can make a huge difference for things like immersion, and gods help me I have never seen any game as beautiful, as vibrant, as sphincter-tighteningly jaw-dropping as this one. I kid you not I have been set to 'walk' for the entirety of my playing experience to date - with the exception of during combat - because I am brought to verge of ecstasy any time a storm blows in overhead while I walk through a woods, rocks cracking and twigs snapping in the canopy above as the foliage heaves to and fro~ Said ecstasy has reared it's delgihtful head again when I've rounded a bend on a track and been smacked in the face by the most gorgeous and convincing god rays ever put into a game as a golden sunset has bathed a deep landscape in beautiful tones. Distant objects are blurred and mixed in a way that suggests an animate oil painting, of a quality such as was never quite achieved by the great masters - if they are dotted with sleepy hamlets, outsized windmills, epic citadels or just farmlands and hilltops, all the better.

The gameplay/story, for the two things can hardly be separated, are likewise surpassing. Conversations of a vaguely Bioware mold are often entertaining - brought to life by Geralt's surpassingly expressive and graphically beautiful face, among other things - and they always lead to interesting questions. The storyline is deep and interesting - sometimes quite funny, too - and some of the characters are truly excellent.

Enemies roam the countryside - solo or in packs, some of them are shockingly vicious and deadly (you haven't been one-hit until you've been one-hit by a giant swooping Gryphon with a skull for a level marker), curious "?" signs dot the maps (each suggesting a likely violent point of interest), and seamlessly integrated quest encounters fill the hitherto hidden stages of the landscape fully and delightfully.

Some might say combat is a little simplistic, but it is only as simple as you make it. Technically you can simply navigate most fights by rolling under blows and slowly picking off small chunks of health, but that would ignore the swarms of options at your finger tips for agumenting your craft - magic 'signs' which are somewhat remeniscent of simple Star Wars force powers, targetted oils to coat your blades with, potions to drink before battle - don't drink too much, or your blood toxicity may reach dangerous levels! - and various secondary weapons can all be brought to bear.

All of this takes place in a dark, vicious, forbidding and absorbing universe that is far more realistic and convincing than anything from that exaggerated pile of guts and horse dung that is Game of Thrones.

This game is epic, it is memorable, it is gorgeous and it is massive.

Perhaps the best praise I can offer this game is that which I have offered friends in person: "Remember the way your mind's eye filled in all the details in those old game worlds from games like Diablo, D2, Dungeon Seige, Baldur's Gate, etc? Remember how in your mind you turned the environments into three dimensional experiences? Well, The Witcher 3 is all of those fantasies made stunningly beautiful, not only meeting your wildest dreams but surpassing them in myriad, wonderous ways.

Play this game! No matter the price (but I got it on a pretty juicy sale)

10/10.
