I realy want to love this game, I did at first.
It has spell crafting, a variety of abilities and promises to let the mage be the focus of a game for once. What I got was a slow, disappointing and frustrating FPS where you are limited to 3 guns and 3 utilities with interchangeable colours where everything you do is delayed by having to either charge your attack for 2 seconds a shot or dodge hordes of brutal opponents who can corner you, stun lock you and kill you in very few hits.

The Game totes the idea of being an all powerful battlemage but if anything it just reinforces the stereotype of the pasty faced mage hiding behind a barbarian's muscles. It took me a while to realise this but the spells just aren't fun. There are clearly correct combinations I'm meant to be using and if I stray from this path I find myself penalised, not only that but you lose your experience points and levels BY experimenting, forcing you to commit to your choices. An equivalent would be if call of duty reset your progress with rifles just because you played one game with a shotgun.

In essence there are 3 targeted weapons, 3 AOE weapons and 1 perfect block. These are then either turned into either a non-damaging control spell (status effects or tactical control), an all damage destruction spell or a middle of the road, does some damage but not much mastery spell. you then augment this further by picking an element to give it colour. So what's the difference between a Destructive Fire Missile and a Destructive Kinetic Missile? The latter is purple and does half the damage, the same goes for all comparisons, they're identical safe for particle effects and damage numbers.

But this just means that the only spells that harm are your destruction ones so you will always need them to actualy get the kill. You might think then you use a freeze control spell followed by a destruction spell. That works fine when you're fighting 1 enemy but is impractical when you're facing 5 at a time with ranged support. You will find yourself running round in circles charging your ranged attack because all the spells are bloody mega-man style charge up guns and hoping not to get sniped in the mean time.

The enemies are tough, brutal and tanky, meaning that they will all need betwean 2 and 4 shots to kill, some also have disabling attacks such as freezes and knock downs which will leave you helpless on the floor or having to drop that spell you were charging to defend yourself, thus forcing you to start charging all over again.

I have 44 hours on this game and I can say that it has to be one of the most repetitive and unsatisfying games I have played in a long time... The constant spamming and blocking really make for a dull ride, even if it looks nice. following a linear path just to constantly have enemies pop out of the ground makes it even worse. The story is the not so original revenge story. The spell system would have been nice if they actually made the spells more fun to use, without that it's pretty pointless. I understand that people worked really hard on making this game and I respect that, but you dont see me pooping in golden pouches and selling them saying "this will make you feel like a badass". this game in my honest opinion is nothing but a polished turd.

Good idea, horrible execution.

If you wanna play this game because it reminds you of skyrim then don't purchase it. If you like a good spell creating game then this one might suite you. Check points can be rough but if you don't die you should be fine. Was dissapointed at the overall experience but then again its only fifteen dollars so just pass it up if you don't wanna spend the money. But if you have all the time in the world then go ahead and play this

Unpleasantly repetitive. Constituent to some other, fuller game. All spells result in the same set of actions: spam spacebar, hold down a mouse button, release, hold again, ad nauseam.

All of the updates are almost a gigabyte or larger. They change little. No idea what's going on with that.

Skip this. Enjoyable on a new computer for a couple of hours and then it's dullsville. I just don't know why I paid for a Serious Sam experience (headless guys in that = undead skeletons in this) that's not as good as Serious Sam. Ugh.

This game is so much fun, love it. The crafting system is challenging but worth the time investment to learn, the power it makes you feel is awesome. Love the improved crafting sytem and guides btw. The story is basic but well done, graphics are awesome, but most of all the spell combos are amazing and super fun. Great job.

About Lichdom Battlemage - All you need to know!

If you ever wanted to play as "Badass-Mage" you've come totally to the right place! For 20€ atm the time I bought it it is totally worth it. It is a real action roleplaying game. Not like in TES Skyrim where you cast and everything is just hard to use and deals no damage, doesn't reward you and doesn't make fun. LD: Battlemage is the total opposite. I have yet to see a better action-based gameplay. You can not only choose your playstyle with shields, different Magic Schools you have to unlock via story-progression NO you actually can craft your own spells!! There are different targeted, AOE and shield spells, combined with 9 schools and each spell having different properties how they work: It's not so hard to understand if you are ingame, but let me explain. You can build your Ice Ray Spell which does freeze you enemy, OR make it a damaging Ice Beam OR make it a debuff beam which stacks damage which is released on a critical hit, for example from a fireball. There's critical chance for normal casting and apocryptical chance for charged spells. (If you charge a spell(holding mouse button longer) it has a 100% chance to be a critical hit) There are lots of multiplierers for everything. Even your movment speed or your blink distance. Yes, you can blink!(teleport)
Which makes the combat extremly fluid. But if you dont want, you can get a different shield for other options! You get loot by killing and looking for treasures.

Lichdom Battlemage has one liniar Story, which actually really doesnt matter at all because your so busy learning more about spells, how they work, how to use them best against different enemies and they beautiful world. Nevertheless the story is fun right from the moment you start! No Joke. You will meet sarcastic people, your companion will be totally different if you play as woman or man. (woman as a male companion, man has a female companion^^)

Top notch! Excellent lightning, motion and showcasing many areas(for ex: icy mountains, fresh jungle, silent haven with beautiful beach in an old village. Very exemplary how the Devs worked on every location. Every location is believable and made with great passion! You don't need a special PC to run on high because it's an instance-based game. Very Important Part: To disable the stupid motion blur you need to set the graphic setting to USER

Bad things about the game:
1st: The tutorial is almost completly crock and you get to learn NOTHING about the crafting which is the most important aspect ingame!
2nd: You have no difficulty option. Sometimes it's just a cakewalk over the bosshimself and somtimes it's impossible to kill just 1 special mob. No good balance!
3rd: There are no loading screens for 1 hours it takes you to get pass this large area which is awesome! But if your done, you gonna get a long loading screen. 25sec for me with a SSD.

Gameplay: 10/10
Story: 7/10
World/Visuals/Engine: 10/10
Bad things: 5/10

Result: Good 8/10
Who is in search for excellent fighting and graphical stunning Badass-Mage Game ; ) MUST HAVE
The story is decent. Funny at times but nothing special. HMPF
No helping hand, luckily we got the web. But no difficulty option is a SHAME

Last words:
I know my english is not so good, and I am making mistakes. Take my apology because it is all about the game here ; )
For 20€, I say yes. You need to try it out, maybe it is something for you. For me it definitely is unique.

One last cool thing:
The Developers are still working on it, and improving every week, listening to their community and doing their job very well.

If you liked my review give it a like : ) was my first one : P

Okay, so this game kinda lost me at first. I wanted to make powerful spells but lost interest due to the complicated crafting and not-so-great turtorials. HOWEVER, with the latest patch and the "Smart Crafting" system, the game got me again. I think I'm still early on in the game, but i will finish it when I have time.

The "Smart Craft" is essentially like this. Say you have one spell with A Lob effect, a Trap effect, and your usual Nova. The smart crafting will take what would work best with your current set up and give you the option to upgrade it. It'll even let you know and quickly synthesize your weaker upgrade items into more powerful ones. So basically, pick what effects you want for your spells, then the game will help you pick what's best for it. It's for those who don't wanna use a lot of time on the crafting system.

This is especially good for the game since a lot of the bad reviews are because of the crafting system.

This is a hard game to review, one one side you see wasted potential and in the others what marvelous thing they accomplished. First off, they are right, never before has being a mage been taken to this extend as far i know. you craft your own spell from components, and each spells can be influenced in 9 different ways, some with varying results. Some spell can behave completely differently depending on their focus while others barely register a change. But this is because some spells are better suited for some things, Control fire is inherently less. interesting than say control frost, but destruction fire on the other hand.... The game feature a large quantity of spell sigil, a decently long campaign with a new game + challenging boss fights, i for one thought i was too strong for as moment, and the boss put me in my place. Being an immortal mage never been this fun and i hope to see a Lichdom 2 someday. Takes everything that's great with this game and improve on the rest and its GOTY material. as it stand the game is not too pricey and you will get a good bit of fun. The game strength is not its story, it is its mechanic. The graphics are pretty decent and it is one of the only game that force my computer to work for them, noticeably. It is one of the game i will/have taken the time to finish. Blast away!

On my second playthrough of this game and I have to say it is unexpectedly beter than I thought it would be.

If I had to try to classify it, I would say it is a mix of the old school magic FPS games like Hexen and Herectic with some Diablo loot collecting and some crafting thrown in for good measure.

Requires a decent rig, but it is great fun once you understand the mechanics of the game.

With 8 spell schools to choose from(each with 3 spell types) and three spell attunements to apply to each of those spells, there is a huge variety in what you can do.

The game is also more tactical and less twitch than I initially thought it would be which is also a good thing IMO.

In short, give it a try. Freeze, burn, shock, phase, corrupt, force and necro to your heart's content! Oh and craft new spells too...

Hi :)

I would just like to say that this game is one of the most interesting and fun games I have played all year, I know it does get a bit repetitive at times but The mixing of spells and blinking is fun, But I will never ever play it again, its just Way Too Hard for me as. Im not really much for that Hardcore kind of games, I dont play games for the challenge I play them for fun so if you are like me I do not recommend you to buy this game. Oh and if you're expecting a First-Person-Shooter but with spells you will be dissapointed.

This is the first game that i really feel that i am playing as a dominating battlemage. It is very hard to get that feeling in other games. The crafting system might be very confusing in the begining but once you get the hang of it you can create spells of immence power. The way you cast spells could be a tiny bit different to my opinion but it is still better than I expected for all those spells.

All in all this games like an fps version of Skyrim as a wizard and i think it really works.

man, the tryhards that say the spells suck. like really? try actually useing the crafting system. iver done like 1500 dmg in the first area after getting my third spell and doing a wombo combo. if i changed the configuration of my spells i can do so much more. nothing more satisying then turning telekinesis from a mastery lob, into a control ray. just whip it around and send every one of them into the sky, then throw a aoe of your choice and laugh. XD 1000/10

A hard game but very satisfying, the character interactions can sometimes get a little awkward in my opinion but a good game nonetheless because of the gameplay.

If you liked spellcasting in skyrim you'll probably like this one

Gameplay / combat

Lichdom: Battlemage is an action RPG where you control a single character from a first person perspective. You are a badass mage on a personal revenge quest and you've got a wide range of spells to choose from.

You've got traditional fireballs and AoEs as well as grenade like "lobs" and "rays" that are short range constant beams. You don't have any melee weapons but you can block, and if timed correctly, this will trigger a "nova" which damages everything in a radius around you. There's also a very useful dodge move. There is no mana limit or cooldowns so you can cast as frequently as you desire.

Each of these spell "shapes" can be given an element which identifies the basic damage type, but also has unique bonus attributes. For example ice can freeze your enemy, lightning can chain its damage to other nearby enemies, and kinetic can hold an enemy in place. And this is just a small selection - there are several others to choose from. Its kind of like the magic equivalent of Borderlands' guns.

Enemies include Human warriors and mages, undead archers and powerful demons. Many of them have access to the same range of spells as the player, as well as special abilities that allow them to shield allies, summon minions, teleport behind you, slow you, freeze you and more.

Lichdom is approximately 25 hours long and is heavily focused on combat, but with such a wide variety of spells and enemy types, there's a fantastic tactical depth and I honestly never got bored.

Level design is mostly linear, but many of the areas are quite wide so it doesn't feel too restrictive. You have room to approach enemies from different angles and plenty of objects to take cover behind. There aren't any side quests, but there are some hidden areas branching off the main path where you can find challenge rooms - kill multiple waves of enemies to be rewarded with lots of loot in the form of spell crafting components.

You gain new spells by crafting them. Each spell requires an element and a shape, and these components are rated from "common" and "rare" to "epic" and "legendary". More powerful components have bonuses to damage, critical chance, casting speed, etc. Sadly I found the crafting system to be very confusing. Whenever I tried to manually create a new spell, it was always weaker than the one I currently had equipped ... even if I was crafting with top tier components. So after a while I just let the game automatically upgrade my spells when a better version was available.

Its not as detailed as most RPGs, and the player doesn't have any control over dialogue, but there are a few interesting characters. I especially liked the interactions between the two heroes, Dragon and Gryphon, and two villains, Hedaro and Hedira. There is some excellent voice acting from the likes of Jennifer Hale (Mass Effect), Troy Baker (Bioshock Infinite), Gina Torres (TV's Firefly) and Jaime Murray (TV's Defiance).

Lichdom uses Cryengine3 so as you can expect, the graphics for environments and spell effects are gorgeous. However, its also quite demanding in terms of PC spec.

I'm running an i7 2600K at 3.4 Ghz, 8GB ram and a GTX 770 with 4GB Vram - well above the recommended specs listed on the Steam store page - but I can't maintain a constant 60 FPS on maximum settings (very high) at 1080p. The early areas seem fine, but after a few hours I started to encounter fights with lots of enemies which killed my framerate. I hate screen tearing, but with Vsync on I was getting dropped to 30 FPS.

For the last few hours I've dropped everything down to high, and enabled adaptive Vsync in Nvidia control panel. Its still not perfect, but performance has improved, and it still looks pretty good. I'm not saying this as a massive critisism, it hasn't hurt my enjoyment of the game too much, its just really a heads up to expect to have to do some tweaking.

I haven't suffered any crashes or noticed any bugs. Controls are fully rebindable and work great with mouse and keyboard.

If you're a massive RPG fan like me, I recommend buying Lichdom at full price. I don't like using numbers to review games, but lets just say the 69% Metacritic average shown on the store page is too low.

I find this game hard to review, because it has some really repetitive corridor gameplay, mixed with awesome spell casting, combat and visuals. You are the titular character, either male or female. Depending on your choice, the opposite gender joins you as a companion who pops up now and then to be sarcastic, which i actually found hilarious.

But what's craptastic is just how "go from point A to point B" the gameplay is, it literally follows the same template level after level with samey enemies, except for the "wanna punch a puppy" difficult bosses.

And what pretty levels they are, earning the CryEngine 3 badge with honour. Foresty, icy, deserty, it's all here folks!

Overall, if you don't mind the painful linearity, then i hesitantly recommend this.

I'd like for it to be very clear that this is a review coming from someone who only played it after it was released. It is not limited to only 3 types of spells - it's more like 8. you can only use 3 elements at once, but there's enough complexity to more intelligent builds that it is plenty.

I've heard people complain about how it isn't as interesting a spell process as Skyrim. As someone who has played more than 150 hours of Skyrim, I can honestly say these people are wrong. Could it still use some things from that game? Perhaps so, but if I had to choose one over the other, I have found Lichdom's magic FAR more entertaining. Just don't do the standard DPS only spells, and you will see what I mean. Using spells to fill your enemies with insect larvae, then use mindcontrol to buy you the 10 seconds you need for the larva to mature before setting fire to the right mob... Well, that's just not something you can do in Skyrim, and it's a blast juggling it like so.

Yes, it's quite linear - this is true. Only a few branch off options to do fights for "loot". They are worth it, are a blast, and are often a great challenge.

Give this game enough time for you to get to the first boss fight and get at least 2 interesting spell types in your inventory. You will find trying to build the perfect spell build to be very enjoyable. I seriously hope this game gets a sequel!

This game is super fun, so much magic, beautiful scenery, and I think there is a somewhat long story line. Also the only somewhat bad part of it is the somewhat long loading screens and it is caped at 30fps but other than that it doesn't take away the fun experience. 7.75\10
