NEO Scavenger Update v1.14: Autosave! And Modding Fixes.

NEO Scavenger is now officially updated to v1.14! Since the test builds have been relatively stable, I've just finished updating the default builds to 1.14 on all sites. The "test" links are no longer necessary, and have been removed for now.

This updates the following builds:

New changes include:

  • Added optional autosave feature to save game at the beginning of each new turn.
  • Added ability to choose whether encounter map labels appear on minimap by adding =0 or =1 at end of data. If missing, assumes minimap label added.
  • Changed crowded map labels near DMC gates to be invisible on minimap, so only gates visible.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed communal barrel fires to be destroyed in extinguished fire recipe.
  • Fixed a bug in loading screen that prevented log from being added to clipboard if error in XML file.
  • Fixed a bug that misreported 0.0 charges on charged encounter items.
  • Fixed several null pointer bugs when loading save file that included content missing from currently-installed mods.
  • Fixed a null pointer bug if game tried to load recipe scrap for missing recipe.

The big change here is the new autosave feature. It'll try to save the game at the beginning of each turn so your progress is not lost in the event of a power outage, crash, or other event. It is enabled by default, and can be disabled on the options screen. Note that permadeath is still active, and your save will be deleted if your character dies.

Also, some modding enhancements made their way into this build. The loading screen logs should now be fixed in the event of bad XML format. And minimap labels can now be controlled by modders. An =0 means no label, while =1 means a label is added to the map. Default assumes a label is added.

Finally, the number of charges in an encounter item are now correctly reported, among some other null pointer fixes.

As always, if there are any issues with the new build, let me know on the forums!

關於此遊戲

NEO Scavenger is a game where you must survive in the wasteland long enough to figure out who you are. Each turn, you must decide where to go, how to scavenge for supplies, and how to deal with anything and anyone you encounter. And with each passing minute, the pit in your stomach grows, your dehydration worsens, your muscles tire, and your body temperature drops in the cold autumn air. Choose your starting abilities carefully, because they and your wit are the only tools you have in the apocalypse!

Features

  • Unique Setting - Near-future, post-apocalyptic Michigan with local cryptids and folklore. And something else beneath the surface...
  • Turn-Based Play - Take your time with each turn, and play at your own pace. Save and quit when you want, and resume later.
  • Permadeath - If you die, that's it. NEO Scavenger is balanced around a single difficulty level: permadeath. Your save will be deleted if you die. So choose every action carefully!
  • No Grinding - There is no XP in NEO Scavenger. No levelling-up. Instead, progress comes from learning how to play the game better, and using your strengths to your advantage.
  • Semi-Random - Much of the map is randomized each game, including the location of ruins, creatures, weather, and certain quest branches.
  • Sandbox or Story - Search for clues to your identity, what happened, and who's hunting you. Or simply test your mettle against man and nature alike. Play how you want!
  • Abilities and Flaws - Choose abilities and flaws each time you play. Different combos unlock different abilities and quest branches.
  • Crafting - Extensive crafting system which allows for substitutions of similar items. Make a rifle scope from half a pair of binoculars, or a noise trap from a pill bottle and pebbles.
  • Desperate Combat - Detailed combat with moves like "Tackle," "Lure," "Kick While Down," "Demand Surrender," and "Threaten."
  • Realistic Wounds - Creatures have complex wound simulation, with multiple wound locations, infection, bleeding, and pain management.
  • Realistic Metabolism - Hypothermia, fatigue, thirst, hunger, disease, intoxication, shelter...everything is tracked.
  • Realistic Inventory - Complex inventory system with slots for holding, wearing, containers, and more. Fit items in grid spaces, and manage encumbrance.
  • Hex-Based World Map - Navigate ruins, hills, forests, and plains in a hex-based map. Line-of-sight, elevation, and daylight matters.
  • Tracking - Creatures leave their tracks and spoor on the map, which can be followed by others. Players can also hide their tracks.
  • Hiding - Players can use hiding to avoid being seen while traveling the map, as well as during story encounters.
  • Hunting - Trap small game for food and fur, or track and kill larger prey on the map for butchering.
  • Hacking - Use hacking skills to unlock scavenged laptops, cellphones, smartphones, and tablets. Mine them for paydata, or snoop through personal files.
  • Foraging - Search for edible plants and water, and use special skills to identify what's safe to eat.
  • Haunting Soundtrack - Music composed by Josh Culler, specifically for NEO Scavenger, plays periodically, lending an atmosphere of loneliness and desperation. (Also accessible as mp3s outside game.)
  • Creature AI - Wandering creatures go about their own business, hunting, scavenging, and hoarding. Morale affects their choices, and some will gang-up and cause trouble.
  • Dynamic Weather - Temperature, rainfall, and night/day are based on real-world data for autumn in the area. If you live long enough, you may see snow fall.
  • Detroit - Take refuge from the wasteland in one of mankind's last bastions of safety. Buy supplies, get medical care, and seek clues in a cyberpunk-styled city.
  • Trading Cards - Collect NEO Scavenger trading cards, badges, emoticons, and profile backgrounds!

Its like if Fallout 2 and Dark Souls had a baby. It truly is an amazing game. It is difficult. It is full of choices that can mean the difference between life and death. It is NOT an easy game.

I recommend this game with some reservations. I commend the developer's brutal commitment to total realism that make this game an extremely tough experience. the intriguing game world, and attention to detail. The game truly does make you thankful for objects as trivial as a shirt or even a worn out shoe. That being said, the game is hard enough that sometimes it feels as if it is unfair. On many occasions I would sit down for a session and be having fun until a single dog or man with a gun kills me and ruins hours of progress. The permadeath system creates a feeling that you've wasted your time whenever you die from something you can't avoid. I feel as if a progression system, saved games, or a checkpoint, perhaps at the end of each day, could go a long way to combat these issues. If you are looking for a turely brutal survival experience with immense attention to detail, this may be the game for you, provided you are able to deal with some of my previously mentioned grievances. The game has a few major flaws but has enough redeeming qualities for me to give it a recommendation.

Fun, but it can get maddeningly hard. Like when you've built a stable home base in the starting hex and the game decides, despite the fact that you're basically a fetus in the time span of playing, to spawn a wolf man to come and kill you simply because you were enjoying yourself too much. There's using RNG to spawn enemies then there's being a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about it.

I like that game, really, but it feels like an incomplete one. I started enjoing it thanks to the multiple wikias guides... but come on, that's where and when gameplay fails. Also there are some basic bugs, like losing the combat turn while changing weapon, even if you had the weapon ready in the other hand; or losing the combat turn if you check your inventory (just looking at it); and an Autosave bug that will disable almost all locations on the map so you're forced to start another game if you want to follow the plot... right, the plot. I felt like something is missing. Dialogues are well written but I just thought "why can't I start a new life on Detroit instead of roaming like a hobo?", no, it can't be done. Because... ok I won't spoil it, but, it's like the game has only few endings that left me still with a lot of unanswered questions in mind. It's a game released 1 and a half year ago, and I think developer should need a big hand on upgrade that nice project.
It's a nice dream, and playing it leaves me just wondering how would it be once completed.

Be warned: This game is hard. It is grueling. Sometimes it can be unfair.

However, perhaps there is no other game out there, in which you will ever be that happy about finding some old plastic bag so that you can carry some more food (if you find some!) or an old empty plastic bottle, which enables you to carry a little bit of (hopefully clean) water.

The game has permadeath, which as often as not can be very frustrating; but if you are looking for a realistic, challenging survival sim with a very original combat system, "NEO Scavenger" should be your choice.

I wanted to like it. Biggest problem is the interface. If only the interface was half as good as Sword of the Stars: The Pit. Because there is a great crafting and exploration and combat game hidden behind the Choose-yer-own-adventure style interface. And it's roguelike permadeath with simplistic graphics. I nearly deleted it once before, and then I found myself wanting to play it again because I seem to have a masochistic streak. But after losing two 4-5 hour games, for basically no good reason, it's too brutal to play for me. Maybe if it had a better interface. I found the setting intriguing, I'll read up on their wiki... but it's not a game for me. Too annoyed after the last game. Deleting....

PROS:
-Extreme, realistic difficulty
-Combat based not of numbers, but on actual damage (bleed, bludgeon, bruising, etc)
-Realistic inventory (weight and size)
-Plenty of viable set-ups
-Ultra-high risk, high reward gameplay

CONS:
-only 15 skill points, but dozens of useful skills (more of a pet peeve)
-a bit too much RNG
-easily get screwed over because you didnt know something
-inventory space managment is a bit wonky; most items take up more room than they appear they should

OVERALL: Extremely hard game, but it just works. 8/10.

Ah, this game returns me to the good 'ol days of dugeon master. A very nice, but at some times intense, text-based open world RPG is always a good way too kill time. I found myself trapped in this game for a few hours, trying every combination of character traits and items and shelters until I found the combination that best suited me. The game also includes a deeply satisfying narrative and atmosphere, one which lacks in many more complex games. In a simpler sense:

Pros:
+Unique, although simple, graphics
+Satisfying narrative
+Immersive and well-thought out atmosphere
+Interesting and innovative game mechanics
+Nice UI
+In-depth interaction and self-interaction mechanics
+Very interesting health system
+Easy to learn, hard to master
+Overall very nice feel and well-polished game

Cons:
-Lack of items (which is especially discouraging for an open-world survival game)
-Lack of enemies
-Narrative and discovery dwindles as the game progresses
-Single storyline with little variation

Overall:
4/5. I really enjoyed this one. It has it's problems, but all in all it was very fun to play.

This is honestely a 50/50 game but I'm going to give it the courtesy thumbs up.

Pros-

Realistic medical conditions and a interesting combat design

Colerful and distinct loot.

decent storty line

Cons-

Lack of loot content and has been for somewhile, so don't expect that to change any time soon.

Very dull after completing main quest,

5/10 only about $5 worth of game here.

I think there are only slightly more redeeming qualities to this game than there are bad ones, so this is only a "recommend" because "meh" wasn't really a choice.

The game is very tedious. One thing that survival games tend to forget is that survival is a very tedious business, and they compress the timeframe a bit for emphasis of that particular aspect, but that just tends to make it even more tedious. This tends to detract from exploration or story-telling: you can't care about those things if the only priority you can possibly have is just making it to the next day. NEO Scavenger seems like it has a very rich and detailed story behind it and a setting that has the potential to be deeply immersive, but none of that matters if you simply die within the first week most of the time.

It doesn't help that the game is somewhat obtuse about a lot of extremely important mechanics, such as the combat system, or health, or that drinking unfiltered water pretty much guarantees that you get cholera or are poisoned. Sure, that last one is pretty obvious in retrospect, but what that implies is that a decent portion of the time you have is going to be spent sterilizing all your water, and hoarding water, etc., which is just about as fun as it sounds.

Item durability is also a terrible system. I don't think it was ever fun or strictly necessary in any game in which it was ever implemented. Yes, on some level, it intuitively makes sense, but it's overly simplistic in its implementation and just keeps forcing you to obsessively hunt for more junk.

The skill system is interesting at face value, but your choices are limited from the start, and since they're fixed this drastically limits the options available to you (particularly at the start of the game) and you are always made painfully aware of it whenever you craft or interact with anything. It doesn't help that some are incredibly useless or situational.

Permadeath is a good thing, I guess, but it also discourages the player from taking risks. There is always an element of risk in everything, but if you're dealing with an unknown and don't know how to assess the risk, you will eventually come to the conclusion that chancing it isn't worth it in most situations, which, again, runs counter to the player's natural drive for exploration. If you're gonna have permadeath in a game, that's great and all, but you gotta throw the player a bit more of a bone here.

I think this game certainly has potential so I'm not gonna trash it utterly. But it is a very very lukewarm recommend at best, at least for now.
