NEO Scavenger Update v1.13: Modding Clean-up, Bug Fixes

NEO Scavenger is now officially updated to v1.13! Since the test builds have been relatively stable, I've just finished updating the default builds to 1.13 on all sites. The "test" links are no longer necessary, and have been removed for now.

This updates the following builds:


New changes include:

  • Changed SampleMod to be self-contained in one folder.
  • Changed old _readme.txt about modding to be stored in SampleMod's folder.
  • Changed loading screen to only show last line of log, and to tell user how to see whole log.
  • Fixed a bug in treasures with a variable output that would return one less than the specified max.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed the dome light to be used in making noise traps.
  • Fixed a bug that caused 4-week pickup truck extension at St. James to be free.
  • Fixed a bug that deleted arrows/spears that stuck in wounds as a creature died.

The major changes here are the sample mod and loading screen. The sample mod is now stored neatly away inside its own folder, instead of having some files and other folders littering the game's main folder. And the loading screen now shows only the last line of the log messages, as well as a tip on how to see the rest. Both of these changes should help avoid confusion in new users, and prevent mod users from reporting harmless "file not found" log messages.

The bug fixes for loot will slightly increase some treasure amounts when a variable number was returned, and dying targets will no longer destroy ranged weapons impaled in their corpse. Also, the St. James parkade should behave better now.

New Test Build 1.13: Modding Clean-up, Bug Fixes

I've just finished uploading new test build 1.13, which includes some changes to make modders' lives easier, and a few bug fixes.

The build is available to anyone who owns the game at http://bluebottlegames.com/main/, or on Desura and Steam. Desura (and therefore, Groupees) users can use Desura Connect to gain access here, or even get their Steam keys and try it on Steam.

To access the test build on the official site, simply visit the game page, and click any of the download links below the usual Windows, Mac, and Linux buttons (look for a red "Test" button).

Steam users can access the test build by opting into the beta for it.

Updates Included in the Test Build

The likelihood that this version of NEO Scavenger will work with previous saves is: likely.
As usual, the older the save game version, the less likely it is to work.

NEO Scavenger is a game where you must survive in the wasteland long enough to figure out who you are. Each turn, you must decide where to go, how to scavenge for supplies, and how to deal with anything and anyone you encounter. And with each passing minute, the pit in your stomach grows, your dehydration worsens, your muscles tire, and your body temperature drops in the cold autumn air. Choose your starting abilities carefully, because they and your wit are the only tools you have in the apocalypse!

Features

  • Unique Setting - Near-future, post-apocalyptic Michigan with local cryptids and folklore. And something else beneath the surface...
  • Turn-Based Play - Take your time with each turn, and play at your own pace. Save and quit when you want, and resume later.
  • Permadeath - If you die, that's it. NEO Scavenger is balanced around a single difficulty level: permadeath. Your save will be deleted if you die. So choose every action carefully!
  • No Grinding - There is no XP in NEO Scavenger. No levelling-up. Instead, progress comes from learning how to play the game better, and using your strengths to your advantage.
  • Semi-Random - Much of the map is randomized each game, including the location of ruins, creatures, weather, and certain quest branches.
  • Sandbox or Story - Search for clues to your identity, what happened, and who's hunting you. Or simply test your mettle against man and nature alike. Play how you want!
  • Abilities and Flaws - Choose abilities and flaws each time you play. Different combos unlock different abilities and quest branches.
  • Crafting - Extensive crafting system which allows for substitutions of similar items. Make a rifle scope from half a pair of binoculars, or a noise trap from a pill bottle and pebbles.
  • Desperate Combat - Detailed combat with moves like "Tackle," "Lure," "Kick While Down," "Demand Surrender," and "Threaten."
  • Realistic Wounds - Creatures have complex wound simulation, with multiple wound locations, infection, bleeding, and pain management.
  • Realistic Metabolism - Hypothermia, fatigue, thirst, hunger, disease, intoxication, shelter...everything is tracked.
  • Realistic Inventory - Complex inventory system with slots for holding, wearing, containers, and more. Fit items in grid spaces, and manage encumbrance.
  • Hex-Based World Map - Navigate ruins, hills, forests, and plains in a hex-based map. Line-of-sight, elevation, and daylight matters.
  • Tracking - Creatures leave their tracks and spoor on the map, which can be followed by others. Players can also hide their tracks.
  • Hiding - Players can use hiding to avoid being seen while traveling the map, as well as during story encounters.
  • Hunting - Trap small game for food and fur, or track and kill larger prey on the map for butchering.
  • Hacking - Use hacking skills to unlock scavenged laptops, cellphones, smartphones, and tablets. Mine them for paydata, or snoop through personal files.
  • Foraging - Search for edible plants and water, and use special skills to identify what's safe to eat.
  • Haunting Soundtrack - Music composed by Josh Culler, specifically for NEO Scavenger, plays periodically, lending an atmosphere of loneliness and desperation. (Also accessible as mp3s outside game.)
  • Creature AI - Wandering creatures go about their own business, hunting, scavenging, and hoarding. Morale affects their choices, and some will gang-up and cause trouble.
  • Dynamic Weather - Temperature, rainfall, and night/day are based on real-world data for autumn in the area. If you live long enough, you may see snow fall.
  • Detroit - Take refuge from the wasteland in one of mankind's last bastions of safety. Buy supplies, get medical care, and seek clues in a cyberpunk-styled city.
  • Trading Cards - Collect NEO Scavenger trading cards, badges, emoticons, and profile backgrounds!

Musím se přiznat, že tohle jsem nečekal. Podle obrázků to vypadá jako ptákovinka. Posouváš se o políčka, čekáš na další tahy, taková ta hra pro ajťáky, řekneš si.
OBROVSKY jsem se mýlil. Možná to nemá nejúžasnější grafiku, ale po týhle hře mě čekalo vyšetření karpálního tunelu (nekecám), protože jsem u týhletý krásky strávil dlouhý večery. Nejhorší je, že tě zabije pokaždý něco jinýho. Pokaždý najdeš úplně jiný věci, který ti nějak pomůžou, nebo nepomůžou. Hra ti nevysvětlí nic, v podstatě všechno musíš nějak vymyslet sám.
Jakožto velkej fanda postapokalyptickýho světa mě bavilo objevovat a prozkoumávat okolí, bavil mě ten retro styl, jakým je hra udělána (ať už se to týká textovejch příběhů, způsobů boje, na kterej mi trvalo si zvyknout a vůbec přijít, jak funguje). Strašně mě bavilo, že hru můžu opakovat kolikrát chci a nikdy to neomrzí. NEO Scavenger jsem dostal jako součást bundlu, ale vědět, že mě to bude takhle bavit, určitě ji koupím.
Za mě 8/10.

A hardcore survivalist game. By hardcore, I'm talking perma death, just about everything can kill you easily, and you're kind of lady luck's ♥♥♥♥♥ in regards to how well you can do sometimes. That said, this is a great game. It's a thinking man's title, borderline unfair (I mean that in a begrudging good way), and it will take you a long time to really master the concept of it. Coupled with a gigantic procedurally generated world and you'll find yourself playing a new set of variables each time, particularly as you can pick a handful of your starting skills before stepping into the frying pan that is NEO Scavenger.

Story-wise, it's kind of an end of the world scenario, except more dealing with mutants, mad men, and bandits, rather than zombies. The plot is kind of backseated to the gameplay, however. I found almost all the NPCs to be universally hostile or locked into a constant fight/flight mentality. Don't expect dialogue or too much revealing information- your character wakes up as a corpsicle in a cryo vat and you're basically thrust into an unknown landscape. You have to gather what you need to survive and you need to do it FAST. Freezing to death is very easy and this game does not hold a newcomer's hand whatsoever. You will be hunted, attacked remorselessly, robbed, and yes, you can literally be killed in one round by the wrong person if you're unlucky. As such, this is about SURVIVAL. Not racking up xp and going nuts with a pea shooter.

While I like NEO Scavenger, there's some things that are a needless hassle about the gameplay. The interface is extremely clunky for your items, the crafting system is a bit vague (I have a sharp edge like the recipe says... I can't harvest this dog because...?), and the biggest issue to me, is the game saves via Flash cookies, not on Steam.

Imagine my disgust when I kept finding my save games erased after every play session. Hours and hours, gone. So I checked my Flash and found I had it enabled to allow cookies to be saved. So something else was deleting them. According to the developers, it could be one's antivirus or any of a number of things. With all due respect, I don't really care to go searching every minute infrastructural maintenance program I have to find out which program is deleting the cookies beyond Flash and what might need an exclusion to NEO- this should have been saved in the Steam Cloud or however many other games here do it without issue. I really REALLY wish the developers would have done something about this instead forcing the player to find a meta solution. Unfortunately, from what I've read, they're not really doing anymore updates and the game is considered completed. :/ Which is a shame, because I loved everything else about this.

I would heartily recommend NEO but the issue with saves is not something I can overlook after finding this out several hours in. If the developers would or could somehow make the game save within Steam and not through cookies, I will happily change this to a Recommendation. As of now, I reluctantly can't do that.

This game is my most favorite survival game ever. Intense, thrilling, sad... it has all. Give it a shot, try the demo... try to immerse in a society that isnt a society anymore... and try to survive, at all costs.

Don't let the semi-clunky user interface and middle-of-the road pixel graphics sway you; NEO Scavenger is an utterly addicting turn-based survival roguelike game that will steal your time.

So I have the wifey take this for a test drive, since I'm lazy and want to lay on the couch. I figure this run would end pretty quick, because I know death is apparently frequent in this game (aka roguelike). I turn around to eat a bag of chocolate, and before I know it the hobo main character is wearing six t-shirts, a hoodie, a hospital gown, a size 7 left shoe, and a size 9 right boot.

Plastic baggies are literally a currency in this world. We had one on our back, one in each hand, and about 6 spare ones stashed in the others. Nuts.

Not even to mention the inventory tetris that I just witnessed. Literally level 9,000 sh*t going on here. If you are OCD or have hoarding tendencies, be forewarned.

What was so fun about this game is that you really feel the excitement as you rise up and gather better and better gear. There is alot of strategy and exploration that keeps things fresh. The story elements are present, but are never bothersome.

Pros:
+Quite addictive.
+Very deep and complex interactions. Lots of attention to detail with crafting and how items interact. How clothing functions, etc. Further, there are lots of ways to go about a situation.
+Feels fair. We actually got quite far on the first run or so.

Cons:
-Interface feels clunky at first, but isn't that bad when you get past the learning curve.
-Music is almost non-existant. Fine enough with me because bad music is bad.
-The combat system leaves something to be desired. Thankfully the game is not centered around it.

Yeah totally worth full price - lots of really fun replay value here.
