NEO Scavenger Update v1.14: Autosave! And Modding Fixes.

NEO Scavenger is now officially updated to v1.14! Since the test builds have been relatively stable, I've just finished updating the default builds to 1.14 on all sites. The "test" links are no longer necessary, and have been removed for now.

This updates the following builds:


New changes include:

  • Added optional autosave feature to save game at the beginning of each new turn.
  • Added ability to choose whether encounter map labels appear on minimap by adding =0 or =1 at end of data. If missing, assumes minimap label added.
  • Changed crowded map labels near DMC gates to be invisible on minimap, so only gates visible.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed communal barrel fires to be destroyed in extinguished fire recipe.
  • Fixed a bug in loading screen that prevented log from being added to clipboard if error in XML file.
  • Fixed a bug that misreported 0.0 charges on charged encounter items.
  • Fixed several null pointer bugs when loading save file that included content missing from currently-installed mods.
  • Fixed a null pointer bug if game tried to load recipe scrap for missing recipe.

The big change here is the new autosave feature. It'll try to save the game at the beginning of each turn so your progress is not lost in the event of a power outage, crash, or other event. It is enabled by default, and can be disabled on the options screen. Note that permadeath is still active, and your save will be deleted if your character dies.

Also, some modding enhancements made their way into this build. The loading screen logs should now be fixed in the event of bad XML format. And minimap labels can now be controlled by modders. An =0 means no label, while =1 means a label is added to the map. Default assumes a label is added.

Finally, the number of charges in an encounter item are now correctly reported, among some other null pointer fixes.

NEO Scavenger is a game where you must survive in the wasteland long enough to figure out who you are. Each turn, you must decide where to go, how to scavenge for supplies, and how to deal with anything and anyone you encounter. And with each passing minute, the pit in your stomach grows, your dehydration worsens, your muscles tire, and your body temperature drops in the cold autumn air. Choose your starting abilities carefully, because they and your wit are the only tools you have in the apocalypse!

Features

  • Unique Setting - Near-future, post-apocalyptic Michigan with local cryptids and folklore. And something else beneath the surface...
  • Turn-Based Play - Take your time with each turn, and play at your own pace. Save and quit when you want, and resume later.
  • Permadeath - If you die, that's it. NEO Scavenger is balanced around a single difficulty level: permadeath. Your save will be deleted if you die. So choose every action carefully!
  • No Grinding - There is no XP in NEO Scavenger. No levelling-up. Instead, progress comes from learning how to play the game better, and using your strengths to your advantage.
  • Semi-Random - Much of the map is randomized each game, including the location of ruins, creatures, weather, and certain quest branches.
  • Sandbox or Story - Search for clues to your identity, what happened, and who's hunting you. Or simply test your mettle against man and nature alike. Play how you want!
  • Abilities and Flaws - Choose abilities and flaws each time you play. Different combos unlock different abilities and quest branches.
  • Crafting - Extensive crafting system which allows for substitutions of similar items. Make a rifle scope from half a pair of binoculars, or a noise trap from a pill bottle and pebbles.
  • Desperate Combat - Detailed combat with moves like "Tackle," "Lure," "Kick While Down," "Demand Surrender," and "Threaten."
  • Realistic Wounds - Creatures have complex wound simulation, with multiple wound locations, infection, bleeding, and pain management.
  • Realistic Metabolism - Hypothermia, fatigue, thirst, hunger, disease, intoxication, shelter...everything is tracked.
  • Realistic Inventory - Complex inventory system with slots for holding, wearing, containers, and more. Fit items in grid spaces, and manage encumbrance.
  • Hex-Based World Map - Navigate ruins, hills, forests, and plains in a hex-based map. Line-of-sight, elevation, and daylight matters.
  • Tracking - Creatures leave their tracks and spoor on the map, which can be followed by others. Players can also hide their tracks.
  • Hiding - Players can use hiding to avoid being seen while traveling the map, as well as during story encounters.
  • Hunting - Trap small game for food and fur, or track and kill larger prey on the map for butchering.
  • Hacking - Use hacking skills to unlock scavenged laptops, cellphones, smartphones, and tablets. Mine them for paydata, or snoop through personal files.
  • Foraging - Search for edible plants and water, and use special skills to identify what's safe to eat.
  • Haunting Soundtrack - Music composed by Josh Culler, specifically for NEO Scavenger, plays periodically, lending an atmosphere of loneliness and desperation. (Also accessible as mp3s outside game.)
  • Creature AI - Wandering creatures go about their own business, hunting, scavenging, and hoarding. Morale affects their choices, and some will gang-up and cause trouble.
  • Dynamic Weather - Temperature, rainfall, and night/day are based on real-world data for autumn in the area. If you live long enough, you may see snow fall.
  • Detroit - Take refuge from the wasteland in one of mankind's last bastions of safety. Buy supplies, get medical care, and seek clues in a cyberpunk-styled city.
  • Trading Cards - Collect NEO Scavenger trading cards, badges, emoticons, and profile backgrounds!

day 1: killed a dogman and made mittens out of him.

day 2: foung a plastic bag to hold my mittens

day 3: found some dogs and killed them with a pocket knife. plus three mittens.

day 4: drank half a river and a bottle of jack and proceeded to take a clown head and spend the afternoon killing

mellonheads. disappointed i could not turn them into mittens

day 5: beat two guys to death with a stick and got two guns and 5 bullets for them. cut them up and put their meat in a

sack i left in the woods

day 5.5: missed shooting a guy three times after i killed two more dogmen and died from acute lung failure via getting a pot in the gut.

10/10 would make mittens again

Mt most surprising favourite so far. I've never been in to permadeath games before but this game gone grabbed me good!

Extremely challenging, and just as you think you've mastered the engine a new part unlocks. Amazing depth, infinite replay-ability, highly recommended.

You're a skilled Botanist, and you find castor plants, smearing yourself with them and making your scent toxic to drive the beast away. You step outside into a barren wasteland, a glow on the horizon to the East. You make your way towards the glow, picking up a mismatched pair of shoes and dragging around two grocery bags filled with twigs, kindling, and empty water bottles. You're close to hypothermic, but just need to survive until the next day so you can focus the sunlight to start a fire to warm yourself. As dawn approaches, you slip into oblivion...

NEO Scavenger is a brutal game where you'll die often, and in horrible ways - even once you understand all of the mechanics, the random number generator will seal your fate if you're not very very careful (and sometimes even if you are). There's surprising depth in the crafting, combat, and survival aspects for a game without any animation. You need a tin can, a lighter, and some twigs to make sterile water to drink. You need the same things plus a dirty rag to make a clean rag. If you get hurt and are bleeding, you need to wash the wound with sterile water (or another antiseptic) and then bandage it with a clean rag. I died of massive infections twice by the time I realized how to properly care for myself after a fight. I died several times in combat before I realized how to play defensively and wait for openings. I still die just through bad luck, but I'm getting further and further into the game each time.

Neo scavenger is VERY fun infact i have almost 90 hours played (offline so it dosent count) but it has 1 single flaw that ruins the entire game and makes is almost unplayable, the saving is not done tradionally but instead saves with flash cookies which is not even remotely acceptable for a game that costs 16.99$ (cad) because after hours of playing your save is just wiped because your antivirus might think its malware or some other bogus reason.

tldr: fix the saving and i will reccomend it.

I know most of the reviews for this are positive. I'm not.

I don't know what the developers did with the game but it is now impossible to play. Back when I played the beta and early release I could get to Detroit 9/10 times. Now I have played 5 times and I have died every time in 2-3 days from the never ending attacks or the freezing cold.

It seems that they ramped up the difficulty by a lot.

I'm not asking for an EASY game, but one in which I can survive enough to have fun playing it.

I used to have fun. Not anymore.

However, it has permadeath; so it can be VERY infuriating if you've gotten far into the game and then die. If you want to survive for an amount larger than 10 hours then I recommend staying inside the starting building until you scavenge adequate gear. This game can be fun in small doses, but if you keep dying you'll get angry fast. It would have been nice to have an option to enable permadeath on or off. And that's why the commnity made cheating mods for the game (not recommended). Also, for some reason it deletes your save file after a while. This is the most discouraging game ever.

The game is phenomenal, compared to other grid based strategy adventure games, the story is very dynamic but falls short on certain aspects that could make players feel that they can actually become part of this world. There is no option to have a permanent home inside the City, and no option to actually control your faith or figure out more about the past. It would of been a much better choice to have the player kill the person in the apartments or take it over or anything, but I think you have to avoid a lot of things in this game to actually be able to enjoy many aspects of it, because scavenging and surviving just won't do it alone for anyone.

This is about how this game goes: Start game. Make player. Die. Restart. Make new player. Die. Restart. Find nothing. Die. Play again. Don't even make any moves. Die. Dead. Dead.

I play rouge-games all the time and this? This is just stupidly broken. Firstly; you never find the loot you need and you start with absolutely nothing. Your character is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and will walk on things that will break unless you have the mechanical skill which requires a LOT of your point to make a character and also reduces the amount of loot you recieve after you search.

My advice? Don't but this game unless you want a repeat death simulator. Unfortunately I've logged over two hours. ♥♥♥♥ you steam; make/buy games that work. Asshol3s.

When they fix your character being able to randomly fall to the ground while walking forward, I'll recommend the game.

You can be fully geared and have this happen just before entering melee combat, which can get you killed in one round.

If you're looking for an intense, unforgiving turn-based isometric strategy surivival game with perma-death I recommend you give this a try, although I do recommend picking it up when it's on sale, $15,- seems a bit of a steep price in my opinion.

You start off the game by creating your character, selecting strenghts and weaknesses, after which the proverbial ♥♥♥♥ immediately hits the fan.

You find yourself just awoken from cryo-sleep in a facility when you notice a strange-looking beast approaching you. You can deal with this using strenghts you've previously selected, after taking care of the wolf-like creature you start to wonder where you are, or who you are, you remember next to nothing, and as you set foot outside the facility you notice everything has changed, buildings are in poor condition, and there are no signs of life to be found.

You must scavenge for survival, your first order of business is protecting yourself from the elements, finding clothes is your #1 priority. After getting yourself warmed up and safe from hypothermia, you should probably find a way of protecting yourself, and scavenging for weapons can be a tedious task, but the excitement you get from finding a mint-condition rifle or shotgun is more than worth it, I won't spoil any more of the game, but I will say this: it's extremely unforgiving and I myself have never survived for more than 25 days, unraveling quite a portion of the story, but not close to all of it.

TL;DR
NEO Scavenger is an unforgiving and exciting survival game, and I'd definitely recommend it if you're a fan of the genre, but you will die. A LOT.

This is basically "The Road" as a videogame. You drag a shopping cart filled with junk through a desolate wasteland, desperately scrounge for a meal, and the apex of your day is finding a shoe in working condition for the correct foot. You'll be lucky to wake up tomorrow and even luckier to still have your things.

The game features an incredibly in depth health system, which makes you vulnerable to blisters, infections, blood loss, diarrhea, allergies, hypothermia, dehydration, starvation...and other awful experiences I haven't had the pleasure to face yet.

Combat is possible, but very very risky and the odds must be considered carefully.

There is some kind of plot, but I haven't progressed enough to fully grasp it. There are, however, occasional side quests and the writing is consistently very good.

Try it out. I don't like survival games, generally, but this one took a hold of me.

Played the demo for a long time and finally decided to buy this game.

Pros:
-Learning curve is very fun and challenging
-No level progression, so if you die, all you are really losing are items. No need to re-grind back up to level 200
-Very atmospheric
-Character customization is decent

Cons:
-Very empty characters, only defining traits are those chosen at the start of the game. No real room for roleplaying.
-Story is very difficult to uncover without multiple runs, and when you do uncover it, its also very empty and disappointing.
-Music is so nonexistent that sometimes i forget its there
-Dying is a bit unbalanced, explained more below

If i have a fur coat, with a backpack jammed with goodies, and im wielding a crowbar, i should NOT get killed by a half naked man with his bare fists just because he had the "Strong" trait. Also getting OHK'd by a dogman when im in top shape because he just so happened to swing at my upper chest and got a good hit in, causing me to go into cardiac arrest. This may be a roguelike but that doesnt excuse poor game balance by the developers.
Ill play this game from time to time when im bored but im definitely not jumping on this everyday when i wake up in the morning because im so excited to make ANOTHER empty character who i kill with alcohol poisoning because ive survived for about 5 years. (because thats how simple this game is once you master it)

Game review aside, you should try Cataclysm DDA, its a free OpenGL game, and its wickedly addictive.

Rating: 5/10
Verdict: Buy it on sale if you have nothing more important on your wishlist.

This is a good game let me tell you why as I recall the last moments of my last life:

I had kept this character alive and well for a good 15ish days when suddenly in the middle of nowhere he began vomiting. I was worried but I had some Antacids on me so I swallowed them and kept going unknowing of what was happening. about a day later I saw I had a disease called 'blue rot' it was stage three. Having no clue of what this was and fearing for my characters life I looked it up on the wiki. Turns out naturally I only had a 30% change to survive it but If I found a certain NPC in a certain place (I wont tell you here) Then I could be cured and immunized. the problem was that in 72 hours there was a 70% chance I would be dead. Panicked by this I began to search the map frantically to the point where I was running through a forest at night when something approached me... I searched and searched but couldn't find anything due to the low light conditions I was stuck in. Then suddenly I was slashed in the stomach by what was revealed to be a dogman (think of a werewolf with no human form.) Startled I took my equipped crowbar and smacked it in the face stunning him. This didn't come without a cost however as the dogman swung again causing my leg to start bleeding profusely. I saw that the beast was stunned took my opportunity and ran while I could through sheer luck I lost it. Wearily I continued my search for this illusive NPC well into my second sleepless night when I saw them. My dogman problem had tripled. Three dogmen 20m away. I didn't want to use it but I saw no other option. I took out the only item of value I had (a pistol with a full mag) from my bag and began to shoot knowing that running was out of the question due to their speed. 6/7 of the shots hit the pack but they were starting to close the distance. I took my bow from by back dropping the pistol and began to unload all five of my arrows into them. One of the dogmen had collapsed due to the pain I had inflicted but that still left two. There was now only 5m between me and them, my two sleepless night had left me on the verge of collapsing and even if I somehow survived this the blue rot would likely kill me. I wanted to die a hero at least. I dropped everything but my trusty crowbar. I braced for impact then swung with all my might at their leader. I was immediately slashed, battered and bruised but I had nearly got the leader at least. It was then that my sleepless nights combined with effectively a marathon got the better of me. My battered body unable to continue collapsed of sleep deprivation and there unconscious I was torn to pieces and devoured by dogmen.

This was only of of the epic moments of this life. From this game I have so many stories I could tell from wandering out of the cryo chamber for the first time to reveal the ruined world I was surrounded in to hunting a deer for an entire day with a single spear to turn its skin into a bag of which I hauled around the best cuts of meat I could get from it. This game is an experience and I recommend trying unless you don't like to read because to become really immersed then you need to read all the text they present to you.

So I was fighting this one Mutha and we both reduced each other to near death. I ended up blacking out and wake up to find my gun stolen as well as other stuff on me. I find him one hex to the left unconscious so I walk up to him and cave his skull in. Got my stuff back, made a full recoverery, then died of cholera a week later.

It's fun!

Waking up with no food or water, wearing only a hospital gown,
Scavenging a few derelict houses, realizing that plastic bags and chip packets are more usefull than mobile phones,
Sleeping in a forest under a makeshift tarp tent in the rain, getting hypothermia,
Eating nondescript mushrooms and having a nervous system breakdown,
Being hunted down by a pack of wild dogs,
Trying to fight them off with a pocket knife,
Trying to cover up your tracks as you move between areas,
Accidently Wearing your right shoe on the left foot, getting severe blisters and being unable to walk,
Eventually dying from blood poisoning due to an infected dog bite,

Never felt so good.

Fun and unique. It takes a little while to get used to the mechanics and features, but definitely worth trying if you're looking for something more laid back but equally challenging.

I really enjoyed this game. I liked the crafting elements, and the randomization of everything. I'd say it's a non-traditional rogue-like rather than a rogue-lite, because you really only gain a little knowledge from each time you play.

The game's definitely worth a try, and I felt the price was right on the money for what you get.

This game can be really brutal, and it can also be pretty easy. it can be really easy and then suddenly really brutal.

I think the worst thing about the game is its reliance on random number generation, you can end up being railroaded through bad luck which is really dis-empowering as a player, you end up feeling like you get screwed over by bad luck more than through your own bad choices.

The game is still good though and really sells its atmosphere well. the games not relly my cup of tea but I still enjoyed a few hours of play.
Not sure its worth the price tag, there are better games for cheaper on steam though.

This game is one that won't leave you unsatisfied as it is brutally hard, and when you die you rarely get upset and think; "I could have done that instead" or "maybe that wasn't a good idea, I should avoid doing it again" (only time I've gotten upset is when I die fighting a bad medusa gang member, almost dieing, then getting killed by a stray dog)
1. The game is terrible when it comes to forgiving mistakes, which makes it brutally fun as you either get punished or punish others for making a bad move like attacking you without weapons while you have a large knife and the strong skill. It can also destroy you if you make a bad move and give you no chance to save yourself
2. The npcs seem player like, some either hunting you down and causing trouble just because they can, others thanking you for not trying to stab them while on their way to go do something. Some ignore you too. Great realism to how some people see, like they would act in an event like this
3. It's a hard game, both to learn and play when you at least think you have the ropes down, a pocketknife, and a yellow canary lighter in your jean pockets since your grocery bag is full of more grocery bags and food. And don't think "oh it must be the bad kind of hard because you need to learn stuff yourself and everything is brutal" since it's a fun game and the only time the game isn't hard is maybe the first few moves when absolutely nothing can move yet and get you. It's a good kind of hard that makes you feel warm with the feels for your characters health and well being as he try's to figure out what the ♥♥♥♥ happened and why he can't remember ♥♥♥♥.
4. Even when you think you got things going well it can still go bad. The run I was the most equipped on was ended by a dogman who was hungry for human flesh, mine to be specific after he killed an npc and ditched the body. This keeps you on your toes as you sneak from building to building hopping to find a crowbar or bow or at least a lighter while the building doesn't give away under your feet and you fall to your doom or fall down some stairs and hit your head, breaking your neck and dieing right away.
I live the game, also a great tip is don't take your necklace off, no gear, no matter how strong, is worth taking it off. If you need it that badly then make room for it.
Keep your yellow canary lighter close by and what ever odd tool turned melee weapon and named "mr head basher" or "stabby stabby craby" or "I dunno what the hell to name this" ready to bash/Stab what ever wanders close enough at night, even a deer or bunny

I had an early alpha / beta account before it came to steam and played a lot of this game. It's fun to sit down and have semi-different adventure each time. The store is fun and the game play is hard. Well worth the cost of admission.

I killed the dogman, wore his fur and cured his meat.

Gathered clothes, had matching shoes, and started a camp in the Cryo Facility. I was on my way to fixing the heat and electrical systems.

And then I showed mercy to two feral dogs outside of my camp. I let them whimper away bleeding from their wounds.

They came back with more dogs.

I should have never stockpiled so many cured meats.

10/10 would fight dogman again.

11/10 would build Strong + Melee again to get tape of me kicking dogmans ♥♥♥.

Incredible story telling, challenging- possibly even brutal or too much for some. I can't get enough of it. The game writer does such an amazing job of describing the setting and situation during evens and NPC interactions. Certain parts of the story send shivers up my spine- I feel as though im almost reading post-apocalypse book at times. Very very well done.

Please consider creating a mobile (android/ios) version of this game in the future, it seems it would work very well even with only touch.

Overall, very brutal for beginners and has a steep learning curve- but the story and interactions with the mutants and NPCs are very very well written- I was completely hooked on this game after my interaction at Zom Zoms. Love the retro feel by the way. Mad props to this developer.
