Last day to register for Combo Breaker 2016!

Registration closes tonight at 11:59PM (MDT, I assume). If you haven't registered yet and are going, DO SO!
https://combobreaker.org/register

Additionally, I'll finally have time this weekend to look at why the game started running worse for people, and maybe be able to make a new build. Yay? Yay.

Yes, this was worth a Steam announcement - Skullgirls has over 160 entrants, which is huge for any game that doesn't end in "V". :^P

Skullgirls 2nd Encore Features DLC released; prices reduced!

Mac crossplay vs PC/Linux is now fixed, and it once again hopefully runs on all old MacOS versions it used to run on. Update your game, Mac users!

It's been a long time!*

Do you like voiced story mode?
Do you like Challenges? Trials?
Do you like MISCELLANEOUS FIXES? **
Do you like PAYING LESS MONEY FOR SKULLGIRLS?!?!

WELL THEN HAVE I GOT AN UPDATE FOR YOU!
I still have an update if you don't really like miscellaneous fixes or paying less money for Skullgirls, but it will be markedly less exciting in that case.

New Prices
- The base game is now $9.99. Forever.
- The DLC characters are now $1.99 each. Forever.
We love you, too.
- The 2nd Encore Features DLC is $15, and discounted for the first week: in theory it's 33% off ($10) if you don't own any DLC, and 50% off ($7.50) if you do own DLC. (This might be broken if you have the IGG-backer versions of the DLC, rather than the paid DLC. We are looking into it.) It includes all the DLC characters, English voiced story mode, Challenges, Trials for every character, and Survival Mode.

General
- Added some slick new guest art to the Art Gallery courtesy of Arc System Works, the publisher for the Japanese version!
- Updated/unified the credits.
- Fixed some other things I've forgotten. Yes, really, it was like 5 months ago...
- Known issue on Linux: Using the nVidia binary drivers 364.15 with KDE 5 is known to cause graphics issues. We're looking into it.
- This build does not include the fix for a newly discovered projectile-combo-start bug for P2. That needs to be exhaustively tested first.
- We've been doing a lot of dev streams for Indivisible, you know, if you're into that sort of thing...

Other Platforms
- Skullgirls is out on the Vita in the US, and very soon (the 15th) in Japan. We have no word on when it will be released Europe yet. >.<
- The Japanese PS4 version also comes out on the 15th. It adds Japanese voice acting, and there is a physical version!

-- Footnotes --
When was the last time you saw a Steam announcement that collated footnotes?
YEAH I THOUGHT SO.

* ...Lenneth. Would you like to know the status of your Einharjar? Would you like to know her status? +5 Bravery - Approached by Thor at the Aesir Mixer last week, rebuffed his awkward advances.

** Oh, come on. EVERYBODY loves miscellaneous fixes!

Wondering about the price of the 2nd Encore Features DLC? The $15 is just for the work involved in Voiced Story Mode/Challenges/Trials/Survival. The included DLC characters are basically free, because they must be included - Challenges etc. don't care whether you own the character or not. If you uninstall a DLC character and play a challenge or trial involving them, the game may crash! So don't do that. :^)

When was the last time you saw a Steam announcement that used the word "collated"?

Skullgirls is a pretty fun game. The characters are pretty interesting, and there's at least one for every playstyle. If you like grappling, you can play as Cerebella (or Beowulf, if you have him), if you like being quick/mobile, you have Valentine and Ms. Fortune. Or maybe you like whatever you'd describe Double's playstyle as. Point is, it's very easy to find a main. This game also has the option to play as a team of 2 or 3, with each member having any normal or special move to use as an assist attack, allowing for the player the get creative with combos. But this also means the game has a very high skill ceiling, as evidenced by the tournament scene. Or by playing a ranked match (which is always a great idea). So this game requires a lot of practice if you want to go to a tournament like Combo Breaker. Despite that, I have a lot of fun with this game, I kind of regret having to get this as a gift.

This is a fantastic, well-balanced fighter that's certainly out of the ordinary!

SkullGirls features a varied cast of characters. Each have their own uniquely unconventional arsenal of weapons and attacks. And unlike most fighting games, the story is RPG-quality! (Sorry, Street Fighter.) The world-building is mostly unrivaled in the genre. If you like BlazBlue's single player campaigns, you're in for a treat.

The hand-drawn, high-definition animations, painted backgrounds, and real-time lighting effects on the characters helps set this game apart as well. There is undeniably a lot of love in the articulate, lively and fluid animations seen in SkullGirls; they speak volumes for the characters' personalities. Few things quite match the charm of hand-drawn animation!

For the price, you can't go wrong with 8 characters. (+5 more if you buy the Second Encore Edition! Saves you $5 on buying all the DLC characters separately, plus additional content.) If you're feeling cheap, the vanilla base game at $10 has 8 playables, and the other 5 DLC characters are seen via CPU fights or online players; they're availability is simply locked on your end. I was perfectly fine with this since I only wanted one of the DLC characters for myself anyway.

And if that wasn't enough, there's more to the game than its explosion of eye-candy! The combat is fast, fierce, and each character comes with more surprises than I could fit into a list. On top of this, the input system is very lenient; I don't struggle to execute most of the characters' attacks.

Tag-team fights don't feel like a drag either. I was expecting a long haul for those types of fights, but it's only one round, whether you're fighting 2v2 or 3v3. Rounds are reserved for 1v1 fights, and I like it that way.

In summary:

Pros
---
· Lovely, hand-drawn animations
· An extremely varied roster of 13 characters
· Excellent world-building and story-telling. (A rare treat in the genre.)
· Runs well on toasters in 2D mode
· Outstanding netcode that holds up while playing with very distant friends
· Fairly forgiving input system
· Not too many nor too few combos and attack commands
· In-game tutorials that teach you exactly how the game works. (I went from fighting Easy CPUs to casually KOing Nightmare CPUs in very little time.)
· Gorgeously painted stages bursting with little details (And some easter eggs.)
· It's HD, and looks absolutely stunning and crisp on a big screen!
· More character palettes than I can figure out how to unlock!
· Unique Infinites Prevention System, if you're not a fan of juggling
· Available for Windows, Mac, Linux, SteamOS, PS3, and eventually the PS4! SkullGirls is very accessible.

Cons
---
· If you're not a fan of how Marvel VS Capcom plays, then this game might not be your cup of tea
· It's kind of weird needing "Verify Integrity of Game Cache" to "install" DLC content
· The lobby system sometimes gets a little derpy during long-term group battle sessions with friends
· While I love that Peacock is a hilariously retro-styled cartoon character to the letter, I feel her use of cigars is one aspect of old-timey cartoons I will never miss. Just, yuck. (At least it's not as disturbingly detailed as older Disney cartoons, so I can kinda forgive it.)

So what are you waiting for? Get this game and 1v1 your friends in one of the most weird and wonderful ways you can on Steam!

WIth the 2nd Encore addon available, I fell in love with this game all over again just like the first time I played it.

Fluid controls.
Beautiful animated sprites.
Boobies.
A very decent netplay.
More boobies.
Hit detection is pretty accurate.
Beowulf and Big Band, best two male characters.
Fully voiced story mode for 2nd Encore.
Eliza has Dio from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure color palette.
Fukua is best for button mashing.
and finally...
Nice soundtracks.
Also boobies.

Of course I recommend this game. >w>

Now look, look, before you dismiss the little time I've played as of typing this review, I just want to say I've played this game religiously on PS3 for months, and I did try the PC version a few months back, so I feel I have every right to preach the glory of the waifus! This is my favourite fighting game and easily in my top 10 games overall. The fighting is fast-paced enough to feel exhilarating in every fight, but also not too fast so you can identify which moves combo well into each other (I usually suck at combos, but I managed to construct a 40+ hit one for Valentine, who happens to be my wai- I mean, main). Every frame is beautiful and the characters are incredibly well developed, as is the lore. Double's a pretty weak villain, and she has the worst story mode in the game, especially disappointing considering it's the final one you unlock, but Valentine makes up for it. My mains are Valentine, Ms. Fortune and Filia. Just buy this game. It's incredibly welcoming to newcomers while also providing fighting game veterans a lot of depth.

BUT PLAY IT WITH A CONTROLLER! KEYBOARD CONTROLS FOR FIGHTING GAMES ARE GOD AWFUL!

I'll start with the grade because it's something pretty visual and straightforward: 8,5/10, and I can see myself changing it for a 9.
Okay, so it's a 2D scroll fighting game, classical. It's a well crafted one that has really cool characters and lots, lots of hours of fun. Hell, I've played around 25 hours and I feel like I'm just getting started. I could write a big-♥♥♥ review but instead of that I'll just make an extense pros/cons list because I find they're really self-explanative.

OKAY THIS MIGHT BE WEIRD BUT I'M GONNA START WITH THE CONS. I know it's weird but people tend to read the pros first and then get themselves falling into some negativity towards the game because the last they read were the bad aspects of it. So here we go!

CONS
-The character roster is a bit short, you'll feel like you need more fighters. But in any case you have Cerebella so you don't really need anything else.
-It can actually get pretty hard, specially on PVP matchups. This isn't bad at all (at least for me, I like challenging games), but don't expect this game to be a happy ride.
-5 of its characters are DLC, and one of them is Eliza. You'll recognize her when you see ehr because she's so cool.
-There's only 2 men on the roster (the game is called Skullgirls but you still kinda feel like you'd like more dudes). One of them is Big Band though, so it's okay. Seriously, I need to learn how to play him.
-Lack of modes. This is actually a bit of a problem, you can basically play story mode (and most of them are not exactly deep), vs AI, Survival (or something like that, I think it has another name) and online PVP. There's this crazy one-fight gamemode somewhere in the game but honestly it'll take you soooo many horus to be able to beat it.
-You can't stop staring at Cerebella's puffs.

PROS
-The characters are overall so, sooooo cool *cough* Cerebella *cough*.
-It's a fighting game filled with hot chicks... and Big Band.
-The DLC's cost 0,99 on sales and the game itself gets its prize really reduced during them as well (although I consider it's worth it's prize).
-It has a SHEER amount of possible attacks and mooves. Seriously, there's a lot, imagine the combos.
-Cerebella.
-Challenging. I love when a game makes me look like a total noob even when fighting against the IA. The different mooves are sometiimes so hard to pull out, but oh man the satisfaction when you do it.
-Fun. Like, hella fun.
-Basically anybody can play it just by adjusting game difficulty.
-Cerebella's hat.
-The music is pretty cool.
-You'll love the art style.
-Stories, although short, are cool because they show the relationship between characters (the only way there was to make Cerebella even better was to make her have this hate-like relationship with Eliza).
-There's A LOT of color pallete changes for ALL characters. A seriously big amount of them.
-Cerebella.

Alright, I hope this was helpful, boys. Now go buy the game, get the DLC characters, pick Cerebella and enjoy!

It's a good fighting game... if I had a controller. Standard laptop keyboard is rather unforgiving. Fun characters each unique in their own way, multiple stories that beg for followups in a sequel game, tight mechanics I can't even hope to truly master, and that jazzy, snazzy music to back it all up.

This is Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, but without the infinite combo glitches. I am yet to play online, since Beowulf feels so easy to play it's even unfair, and I'm yet to finish the game on Nightmare difficulty. In story mode you can actually feel sorry for the characters, I felt kinda sad with Squiggly's ending. I just find it kinda disappointing givine the Skull heart's lore, what it can do and how not really everyone actually goes through with such.

I'd give this game a 9/10.

Skullgirls is like that one girl you dated in high school.

She will rip your heart out, crush it to smithereens and spit on your face to rub it in that she has defeated you.

And you still love her anyway.

The characters are all gorgeous. The stages are vibrant and beautiful. The music is jazzy and upbeat. The game feels like it was made with serious heart. A Skull Heart, perhaps.

Buy this game.

Fantastic visuals, tight controls, incredible soundtrack. If you're into scantily-clad cartoon girls whaling on each other, this is the game for you! Skullgirls is a good beginner game if you're interested in other fighting games. Unfortunately, it suffers from unbalanced characters and a relatively small playerbase. In the event you do find someone online to fight, they're probably going to be frustratingly good, or have no clue what they're doing, effectively estranging intermediate-level players if they don't have their own friends to play with. It is a cool game but it did not survive in the long run.

This is possibly one of the best fighting games to have come out in recent years. It is a very technical fighter that is suprisingly easy to pick up and play, it does help if you learn but it is easy to do with the most amazing tutorial you will ever witness. It covers genuine combos you will use competetivly. The art style is amazing with a jazz soundtrack and some very suggestive clothing. Seriously from seasoned fighting game veterens to fighting game virgins this is the game for you.

I'm going to be honest: I liked this game the minute I started it up, went into the training section, and saw the word "tutorial". I'm one of those people that pauses fighting games in the middle of a match to look up moves and combos, and having a place where I was taught, not only how to use them, but when to use them, was incredible for me. I mean, yeah, it has great art, an awesome soundtrack, unforgettable characters and awesome mechanics, but the fact that it actually taught me, in-depth, how to play the game, was what sold it for me. If you too are a fighting game noob, this is probably one of the better ones to pick up. Word of advice, though: Don't go online unless you're actually good at the game. Everyone else is, and they'll wreck your steez real quick.

Let see now, I remember buyin skull girls for the X360 back when it first came, I'm still playing and getting my ♥♥♥ whooped but I dont really care cuz this is a GREAT FIGHTING GAME.

* TO NEW PLAYERS *
This is worth your $10.00 (price at current time of post) and to tell the truth you don't really need to puchase the DLC character right away. It's more fun, YES, but before you invest your $2.00 (per character... WORTH IT!) on new characters you have to make sure you get your basics down. Also don't worry about losing all the time, it's discouraging sure, but if you played dark souls then losing only makes you better.

This is my absolute favorite game, so excuse me if I'm biased. The game is best played with a fightstick or gamepad, not a keyboard, but it definitely can be played on keyboard. The aesthetic quality, the controls, and the moveset are all things I'd consider great. It's really hard to find one thing I dislike about the game, besides the fact that Double creeps me out a bit. I'd also say that the DLC characters are totally worth it, especially Eliza or Filia.

With fun combat and mechanics Skullgirls is a beautiful anime 2d fighting game. The art and the graphics are really nice and I loved the soundtrack (just do a YouTube search for “The Fish Man's Dance” and “The Legend of the Skull Heart” -my two favorite- they are amazing!).
Game has a comprehensive tutorial, gameplay in general is really good.
The characters have a lot of style and personality, I love the cast, it’s very original. The only problem is that there are not enough characters since the roster is rather small.
As for game modes it has different ones, like single player story, arcade mode and vs. I’m sure you will have fun in every one of them. By the way, the controls are intuitive and responsive.
A must have if you are fan of anime and/or fighting games.
