Skullgirls 2nd Encore Features DLC released; prices reduced!

Mac crossplay vs PC/Linux is now fixed, and it once again hopefully runs on all old MacOS versions it used to run on. Update your game, Mac users!

It's been a long time!*

Do you like voiced story mode?
Do you like Challenges? Trials?
Do you like MISCELLANEOUS FIXES? **
Do you like PAYING LESS MONEY FOR SKULLGIRLS?!?!

WELL THEN HAVE I GOT AN UPDATE FOR YOU!
I still have an update if you don't really like miscellaneous fixes or paying less money for Skullgirls, but it will be markedly less exciting in that case.

New Prices
- The base game is now $9.99. Forever.
- The DLC characters are now $1.99 each. Forever.
We love you, too.
- The 2nd Encore Features DLC is $15, and discounted for the first week: in theory it's 33% off ($10) if you don't own any DLC, and 50% off ($7.50) if you do own DLC. (This might be broken if you have the IGG-backer versions of the DLC, rather than the paid DLC. We are looking into it.) It includes all the DLC characters, English voiced story mode, Challenges, Trials for every character, and Survival Mode.

General
- Added some slick new guest art to the Art Gallery courtesy of Arc System Works, the publisher for the Japanese version!
- Updated/unified the credits.
- Fixed some other things I've forgotten. Yes, really, it was like 5 months ago...
- Known issue on Linux: Using the nVidia binary drivers 364.15 with KDE 5 is known to cause graphics issues. We're looking into it.
- This build does not include the fix for a newly discovered projectile-combo-start bug for P2. That needs to be exhaustively tested first.
- We've been doing a lot of dev streams for Indivisible, you know, if you're into that sort of thing...

Other Platforms
- Skullgirls is out on the Vita in the US, and very soon (the 15th) in Japan. We have no word on when it will be released Europe yet. >.<
- The Japanese PS4 version also comes out on the 15th. It adds Japanese voice acting, and there is a physical version!

-- Footnotes --
When was the last time you saw a Steam announcement that collated footnotes?
YEAH I THOUGHT SO.

* ...Lenneth. Would you like to know the status of your Einharjar? Would you like to know her status? +5 Bravery - Approached by Thor at the Aesir Mixer last week, rebuffed his awkward advances.

** Oh, come on. EVERYBODY loves miscellaneous fixes!

Wondering about the price of the 2nd Encore Features DLC? The $15 is just for the work involved in Voiced Story Mode/Challenges/Trials/Survival. The included DLC characters are basically free, because they must be included - Challenges etc. don't care whether you own the character or not. If you uninstall a DLC character and play a challenge or trial involving them, the game may crash! So don't do that. :^)

When was the last time you saw a Steam announcement that used the word "collated"?
YEAH I THOUGHT SO.

Combo Breaker 2016 registration is open!

You better believe this gets an announcement here!

If you play Skullgirls, YOU SHOULD GO TO COMBO BREAKER.
I'm already registered!Yep! SG and VSav.

Even if you can only travel to one fighting game community event in 2016, MAKE THAT EVENT COMBO BREAKER. Combo Breaker 2015 was the absolute BEST tournament experience I have ever had, and 2016 looks to be equally amazing.

The venue is open 24 hours. You don't have to play games in your hotel room - there are round-the-clock stations for ALL tournament games, including Skullgirls! If you're like me, you go to tournaments to play games against people you never get to play, not to sit around and watch other people do that. Well, Combo Breaker has got that covered. Other tournaments could learn a thing or two. :^)

Oh right. Where is it? It's in Chicago, you fly to O'Hare.
Website: http://combobreaker.org/
Launch trailer:

I was not compensated in any way for this announcement, I'm just hella excited for this. The Skullgirls community will be out in force!

Classic Co-Op games aren't exactly common at the moment when it comes to PC gaming, so when I wanted to find a game I could play with my friends that would provide more than a few hours of fun, I was truly stumped. That is until I found BattleBlock Theater in a steam sale.

The game starts by telling you of the tale of Hatty Hattington. A boat of friends called the S.S. Friendship sets sail with lots of friends, and basically the best friend, Hatty Hattington. They try to find adventure but end up getting into a storm, which causes some slight trouble. The storm ends for a while but then it comes back where it causes the ship to crash on an island with a theater on it. After going inside some giant cats put a mysterious hat on Hatty, which causes him to start crying and the players are imprisoned by the cats who act as guards for the prison theater thing. It’s your job to collect gems so you can escape the theater, with all your friends, including Hatty. The narrator tells you more about the history of the theater as the game goes on, which helps explain why everything is happening. The story isn’t too big, but for a game like this it doesn't need to be amazing complex, but it is good enough to make you want to finish the game, as the mix of comedy and saving Hatty does end up giving you a goal to reach for.

The visuals and the audio are amazing in both BattleBlock theater and all of the Behemoth games. There is a unique art style which although it’s not the most visually impressive it still looks very nice and it helps portray the overall feel of the game. It really makes the game and levels look vibrant and unique. Whenever I see a behemoth game like BattleBlock theater it always has this distinguishable style, which makes the characters look unique and it always is funny to see how emotions are in this game as they are very expressive.

The cutscenes have this art style portrayed in a funny puppet show like form, which thanks to the narrator's comments always gives me a laugh as the narrator is truly amazing in both his writing and his performance, with the visuals just adding to the overall hilarity and general awesomeness of the game. Will Stamper is a great narrator and I can’t imagine anyone else taking up the role and even being able to compare to his work, which helps provide the game with a great atmosphere. A couple of my favorite quotes include "Give yourself a round of applause. You found a gem that was just sitting there." and “Even the word 'hopeless' has the word 'hope' in it! And if you rearrange the letters it spells 'peeslosh!'".

The music has a pretty laid-back and catchy style to it which reminds me of the sort of thing you would expect to hear in a carnival or theater. There is a variety of different styles and most of them I can’t define as any genre, but they feature a lot of different instruments and sounds which is always nice. A couple of standout examples are the main theme and the ending song. If you’ve completed the game then you know what I’m on about. The boss stages also have this theme which is relaxed, groovy and it also somehow gives you a sense of urgency, which is nice as the boss stages are timed. The secret area song is also worth a mention.

The interface is very simple in this game but also quite effective. There isn't really much on screen apart from the actual game, as most of it only appears when you need it, for example how many gems you have is only displayed when you collect a gem. The menu system has a lot of options and it makes it easy to understand what you’re doing, and the options in the game are as in depth as they should be.

BattleBlock Theater has a couple of different game modes, and quite a few ways to play each of them. These game modes are the story mode, arena mode and level editor, which also comes with furbottoms features, which shows of some user made levels. All of the game modes can be played by yourself or with a friend either locally or online, with the exception of the level editor which you can only play on your own.

Story mode features the story I mentioned not so long ago, where you have to complete levels and collect gems and yarn in order to complete even more levels and gain more customization options like heads, weapons and tools which carry over through all aspects of the game. The levels all have great puzzles both when you are alone and with a friend, and the level designs are very inventive and they really help make the game feel different from many other modern platformers. You get graded on how well you perform in each level, although this doesn’t really give you anything outside some bonus gems. There is also an insane mode which is literally just the normal mode but you only have one life per level, and I have got to the fourth world, but I don’t really think it’s worth completing.

Each level also gives you a rating depending on how many gems and yarn you collect, as well as your time. The highest is A++ although achieving an A++ only awards you with more gems, so there isn’t any real reason to 100% all the levels.

Arena mode is a competitive mini game style mode for up to four players, which is in the 2v2 or 1v1 formats. Arena mode includes soul snatcher, muckle, challenge, king of the hill, color the wool, grab the gold, ball game and capture the horse.

Soul snatcher has you keeping control of the enemy’s souls which are obtained by killing soul carriers. Holding an enemy’s soul rewards you with points. Muckle is just a team deathmatch style gamemode and challenge is where you have to score the best time on a given level. King of the hill is where you have to control a crown block and color the wool is where you must, well, color the wool. Grab the gold consists of you grabbing gold from the enemy golden whale and depositing it in a safe to gain points, ball game is basically basketball and capture the horse has you riding the enemy horse to your stables to gain points. There are enough varied arena modes for you to find one you want to play, but there will always be a couple that you will barely touch, if ever.

Although I’ve had the least experience with it, the level editor is really in depth and you could really see the developers using this editor to create their levels, as it gives you more than enough tools to create your own levels. A lot of the user created levels I tried were inventive, whilst others were stupid, but either way it is great that the community can make contributions to the game. In BattleBlock Theater as a whole I feel like the idea of friends and the community are very prominent, and it helps make it feel like a game that many people helped make, not just the developers.

The multiplayer in a lot of modern platformers can make things hectic, and in BattleBlock Theater it does, but the way each level is designed will only cause you to get frustrated for a short time, if at all. Its funny to use a friends head to complete a platform or set fire to them and use them as a meat shield to avoid missiles. I really think that the multiplayer is a great experience that you have to experience with a friend if you own the game.

Overall BattleBlock Theater is a truly great game that I recommend to all fans of platformers and people who like funny games like the ones Behemoth make. It has a great style, a great sense of humour and the level design and gameplay are excellent as well. The only real bad points are that there are some arena minigames I never really play and that the game can be frustrating to some people, and the insane mode is really cheap in a lot of instances.

This is possibly one of the best fighting games to have come out in recent years. It is a very technical fighter that is suprisingly easy to pick up and play, it does help if you learn but it is easy to do with the most amazing tutorial you will ever witness. It covers genuine combos you will use competetivly. The art style is amazing with a jazz soundtrack and some very suggestive clothing. Seriously from seasoned fighting game veterens to fighting game virgins this is the game for you.

When awesome game meets crap business politics...

To be clearly - Im rlly love this game. Dont look at my hours - this game has not only steam version.
When its released, it was like a blast: awesome and unique artstyle, combos, fueled with broken fingers, ever high-tier waifus. Then devs also added native linux support. Ever if there was not much players online, ever if Im sux in this genre deeper, than Sasha Grey, Im loved it. And obliviosly insta-bought all dlcs, when they came.
Then devs announced their new game, cuz this one looked finished, Im prepared my wallet...

I rlly dont know, what happened with devs or publishers, maybe money bashed their heads, maybe smthing else... But then they added 2nd Encore DLC.

- Yo dawg, they brught new content 4 u, m8, why dafaq u cries in spanish here? - you should ask now.

Long story short: they f*cked all fans. F*cked those, who bought all dlcs already, f*cked humble buyers, dp'ed kickstarters.

If you didnt read description for it yet, I can type here, what the hell is wrong with this dlc: it adds new content, but also includes all already released dlcs. Overall - these guys, who bought other dlcs already, should pay twice.
Yep, they added temporary 50% off sale. BUT WAIT.

Here is some simple mathematics: there are 6 basic dlcs. Before permanent drop of prices, their price was like 5$ per one. So - 30$ for all dlcs. Second Encore costs 15$. Ever if their new game modes are awesome, ever if voice acting is cool, for dlc with new content, its overpriced. Thats why they made this dirty trick.

Yep, for those, who didnt get other dlcs yet, its awesome:
"Hei, gais, 4 15 dollarz I've got mush moar content, than you for 30, deal with it". But...
THIS ♥♥♥♥IN DLC COSTS 2X LESS, THAN WE PAID ALREADY. WHY DONT GIVE IT FOR FREE FOR OWNERS OF OTHER DLCS? WHY DONT ADD A SEPARATE DLC, THAT WONT DUPLICATE EXISTS STUFF? WHY SHOULD WE PAY TWICE?

♥♥♥♥ you too, Lab Zero. Im pretty sure, people will prefer piracy over buyings for your stuff.

You only get half the characters at purchase, then you have to buy the other half. This Capcom-style approach towards releasing unfinished games and forcing players to purchase what should already be included in the game really stinks.

As much as I would like to say how well this game is made. It's extremely confusing. Now of course in order to learn this game it will need time put into it.

I bought this thing hoping it was not a precision fighter but then again I didn't look into it. I did assume however that is was a fun simple fighter because of how unserious it seemed to set it's tone.

For people that do nothing but play precision fighters? Yes I can recommend. For people that are just typical FPS dumbasses like myself? Hell to the ♥♥♥♥ing no, we're better to sticking to Super Smash Bros. for that.

Sleek, fast-paced, beautifully animated with a unique art direction, coupled with terrificially well-balanced gameplay and an amazingly catchy soundtrack, Skullgirls is a lovingly, wonderfully crafted game that has all its moving parts executed flawlessly in every way. I can't remember the last time Capcom made a fighting game that handled this well and looked this gorgeous.

...Wait. It's not made by Capcom?

Huh. Well, that explains it then.

With fun combat and mechanics Skullgirls is a beautiful anime 2d fighting game. The art and the graphics are really nice and I loved the soundtrack (just do a YouTube search for “The Fish Man's Dance” and “The Legend of the Skull Heart” -my two favorite- they are amazing!).
Game has a comprehensive tutorial, gameplay in general is really good.
The characters have a lot of style and personality, I love the cast, it’s very original. The only problem is that there are not enough characters since the roster is rather small.
As for game modes it has different ones, like single player story, arcade mode and vs. I’m sure you will have fun in every one of them. By the way, the controls are intuitive and responsive.
A must have if you are fan of anime and/or fighting games.

Hard to learn, hard to master. Skullgirls' combo system is difficult to get into at first, but once you open it up, the sky's the limit. Each character's combos are quite different, and they are all (for the most part) very varied in their moves. If you like MvC2 & Guilty Gear, you'll love Skullgirls.

Skullgirls is a fantastic fighting game to start out with. It really does help you learn a lot of the inputs needed to play which can be a difficulty for a lot of new players to fighting games in general. All of the characters are loveable in their own ways and its a very well animated game with a great soundtrack.

Skullgirls is a combo heavy game a lot like the Marvel Vs Capcom series. A lot of memorizing goes into this game if you really want to learn it, A lot of the imputs are pretty lenient and its pretty easy to link one hit into another without any trouble of timing.

This is a great game to get for 10 dollars and often goes on sale, definitely would reccomend for anyone interested.

Tell me if there is anything wrong with this review and I'll be sure to change it

This review is from the heart so its bound to be long as hell

Skullgirls is a 2D fighting game in which every single penny is worth it's purchase price.

This game was my first fighting game of this stature and probably THE best game for anyone wanting to get into the genre
(We'll cover this later)

The games first impression is a solid one as you're thrusted to the menu with some smooth ♥♥♥ jazz music

The game has 3 main modes, the single player, the multi player, and the training mode

The single player includes, story mode, arcade mode, and a cpu quick match. The story mode provides a unique story depending on the character you choose, the lentgh of the story (for each character) can range from 15 minutes to an hour depending on the difficulty you are playing on (The Fukua story mode is a ♥♥♥♥♥!) which welcomes a good amount of play time. These characters are also charming in their own right as their personalities each differ and make for some pretty good story telling.

Speaking of characters there are a total of 14 characters however 5 of them are DLC (4.99 Each) these characters each have their own unique playstyle which will be the preference to the player wheter they like grappling characters, combo characters, or characters that require stratagetic placement of their moves. This was a very welcoming feeling as I hardly felt that any to characters were the same(Besides Filia and Fukua).

Each character also has 25 unique color palettes to choose from which really showed how much these devs cared about the culture nowadays and their product. Every time there was a color pallete based on another game and I was able to recognize that I immeadiatly said to myself "Yeah these devs get me"

The multi player is solid as all hell and I rarely ever saw the framrate dip because either me or the other player has a bad connection. Although the quick matches for some odd reason don't work all the time for me, the lobby matches worked perfectly. However if you dont practice enough with your prefered characters and deside to jump into a lets say a quick match you are going to get your ♥♥♥ beaten ALOT. As your opponent will rack up combos and combos and combos against you which is my only real issue with this game. Even though their is a built in mechanic where infinite combos aren't allowed I still found at times people were able to do such things (or I just suck)

The biggest praise i have for this game is its extensive tutorials, these tutorials cover everything to standard movements, blocking, advanced techniques, mix ups, and even diving into specific characters with their movesets and how they play best. This tutorial is the very reason why this is the first game i recommend to anyone who wants to get into the genre.

Stages are varied and are mesmerizing to look at, music is also funky to listen too even outside of the game, and frame rate is always consistent.

This game is one of the best indie and best fighting game I have ever played. This game overall rightfully deserves a 9/10 from me.

Thanks for reading

A fun romp through a dark world with a nice inversion of the standard "all dudes and a couple of ladies" that one finds in most fighting games.

The controls are easy to get used to and the game is beatable even if you aren't tournament tier as far as your skills go. The stories are dark and poke fun at the normal, making for an entertaining package.
