I've seen some mixed opinions about this game so I thought I'd give you mine.
I'm at what I think is the last or one of the last battles in this game so I'm pretty far in.

I noticed this game on the "coming soon" list some time ago and without hesitation I pre-ordered it. Why? Simply based on the artwork, turnbased combat and the setting of the game. And mostly, your decisions affect your journey! I played The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among us and I like to have some choice in the direction a story is heading.
Basically it's Vikings on the Run (would have been a good title as well, but not nearly as cool as The Banner Saga). You're fleeing from a "robotic" army called the Dredge. On your journey you meet people, villages and enemies. You meet a lot of those so you have to make a lot of decisions on how to approach each situation.
For example: A Village you pass is under attack by Dredge. Will you help the villagers (chance of casualties or other surprises and possibly a cool reward), wil you sneak past (no casualties if you aren't discovered) or will you watch the fight (and later check out the village and maybe kill the remaining Dredge)?
All decisions lead to a different situation, and they can not be taken back. Luckily there is no time limit on your decision so you can take your time to think it through. Whatever you choose, you never know what's going to happen. You might even lose main characters by "bad" decisions, and believe me, you WILL make bad decisions ;)

So you're on the run with a rather large crew of Vikings: Warriors, women, old people, giants, kids... a whole community.
Lot of people means a lot of problems. You're not only fighting the Dredge, there's a lot more happening. Intrigue, jealousy, betrayel, you name it. And they need food too, so you have to keep that in mind as well.

Now the fighting part. You fight a lot in this game so don't underestimate it.
It's turnbased and actually imo it's the worst part of the game. Once you find a tactic that works you can stick to that most of the game. There isnt much variation in fighters: you have your tanks, archers, warriors and a rare magician. All characters have different special skills, but you can finish most battles without thinking too hard which characters to use (simply those who have the highest skills). Oh, and each character can equip 1 special item to boost some stats. These special items can be found on your journey or bought at a town market.
Your enemies are of the same type: big ones, small ones, magic ones and those that can do ranged attacks. Sounds basic? Yes it is. At this moment I've seen a lot of battles and they bore me.

If youre looking for a Viking version of a good turnbased combat game this isnt for you. If youre looking for a RPG look further. If you want a fast game, tough luck.

"That's a lot of bad stuff you wrote, why did you give it a thumbs up?"
Yes it has some major flaws but the story keeps me going, even though it's not even the best I've ever seen in a game. The graphics are beautiful. The amount of decisions you have to make is impressive. The soundtrack is good, nothing fancy.
It's a game that makes me want more, which is impressive. I consider myself a bit spoiled and I'm not easily impressed by a game anymore. I play 1h -1.5h sessions almost every day (my gaming time is limited and my backlog is huge). I'm sure I'll finish this soon and I'm looking forward to the next part(s).

The Banner Saga caught me by surprise.

I did not hear of its [highly succesful] Kickstarter campaign, and only came to learn of its existence when it showed up on Steam's "coming soon" section.

Obviously the first thing to draw my attention was the art style. As you can see from screenshots and trailers, it is clearly inspired by Walt Disney's works, and indeed it's absolutely gorgeous. Animation quality is great, too.

The gameplay is really enjoyable. I'm not the biggest fan of turn-based combat, but The Banner Saga presents some interesting mechanics that make encounters with enemies feel like more complex chess matches.

Where the game really shines, though, is in the "caravan-management" sections. You lead families and warriors for leagues across a beautiful land torn by war, making sure mouths are fed and morale stays high, facing dilemmas almost every step of the way. Every decision you make feels meaningful and impacts the world and characters around you.

As the story approaches its climax, the atmosphere grows dire. At one point, I genuinely felt like I had painted myself into a corner, bad call after bad call. I despaired. That's a feeling few games can boast about being able to provoke.

But for all its ruthlessness, The Banner Saga is not unfair. I persevered, and managed to complete the campaign. Finishing the game really felt like an accomplishment.

And an accomplishment is what this first chapter of The Banner Saga is. A work of art. A masterpiece of our time.

I stand in awe.

Wow, just wow. The Banner Saga blew me away. Incredible art and animation, and a fabulous turn-based strategy game with RPG elements in general. I couldn't stop thinking about this game for days after I finished it and I normally don't even like turn-based strategy games (or it has to be something like Advance Wars).

This game is deep, as far as the story is concerned at least. You'll be losing plenty of people over the course of the game, and it's not necessarily because you made the wrong choice. It's because the choices *are* tough and there usually isn't a right answer to begin with. The game autosaves so you can't go back and try it again, and you can't save manually.

The artstyle and animations are just beautiful. I appreciated it, and enjoyed it, for the entire length of the game. There's just so many detail. The characters and the environments, especially when you're fighting. Normally all you see is empty looking environments with a tree or something, but here you have dead bodies lying around and destroyed villages. Nothing looks the same (as far as I can see). They put *a lot* of love in this game.

It also feels, and is, incredibly polished. It's simply amazing. The UI is small, clear and unobtrusive, but some things could've been explained a bit better. Some things are a bit unclear if you go to the character management screen, for example. It could benefit from more and better explanation. Still, no biggie.

One other thing that stuck with me are the difficulty spikes. These are random but annoying. However, you can change the difficulty on-the-fly so it's usually just a matter of pressing a button.
The game itself can take about 9-12 hours to complete, so it's a pretty big game. I personally never got bored of it.

Now I'm anxiously awaiting the sequels, because man, this one set the bar pretty high for me. If they can maintain the same quality and polish it will be awesome, even if they decide to never add any new features.

Absolutely recommended !

The Banner Saga was a wonderful turn-based strategy game. It's probably one of the more challenging games within the genre. I personally had to play it a little over 2 times through just to get a better foothold on the combat system.

Here are a few observations I can make after playing over 30 hours of the game:

- The game is VERY challenging. The jump in difficulty between easy to hard is extremely high and there is a very small room for error in most battles.
- Great visuals. The characters (from the animation to actual design) are amazing. The landscapes are gorgeous and you get to experience them in full as you travel to the final destination.
- Numerous tactical possibilities! When you finish the game for the first time on Normal, you'll be able to decide how you want to invest your resources and who you want to invest them on. This opens up a lot of possibilities when it comes to character placement/formations. Even though there's little room for error when playing on hard, there's a ton of ways to overcome each challenge based on decisions you've made from prior experience.

- The camera controls are limited. I would have liked to see keys binded to auto-move to each of you characters. You have a max of 6 so f1-f6 or 1-6 would have been nice.
- No key binding. I know there's not a lot of use for the keyboard in this game.. but a skip function to automatically rest for willpower would have been very helpful.

All in all, it's a really good game. There's a lot of things to appreciate in this game and you can tell that a lot of effort was poured into polishing the experience. I hope that this game continues with further installments because I would gladly pay full price for more of this masterpiece!
