You arrive home after a year abroad. You expect your family to greet you, but the house is empty. Something's not right. Where is everyone? And what's happened here? Unravel the mystery for yourself in Gone Home, a story exploration game from The Fullbright Company.

Gone Home is an interactive exploration simulator. Interrogate every detail of a seemingly normal house to discover the story of the people who live there. Open any drawer and door. Pick up objects and examine them to discover clues. Uncover the events of one family's lives by investigating what they've left behind.

Go Home Again.

Key Features

  • A Personal Story: created by veterans of the BioShock series and the writer behind Minerva's Den, Gone Home offers the rich, nuanced details of one family's struggles to deal with uncertainty, heartache, and change.

  • An Immersive Place: return to the 1990s by visiting a home where every detail has been carefully recreated, and the sounds of a rainstorm outside wrap you in the experience.

  • No Combat, No Puzzles: Gone Home is a nonviolent and puzzle-free experience, inviting you to play at your own pace without getting attacked, stuck, or frustrated. This house wants you to explore it.

  • Fully Interactive Investigation: discover what's happened to the Greenbriars by examining a house full of the family's personal possessions, and the notes and letters they've left behind. Use your powers of observation to piece together a story that unfolds as you explore.

This game was probably the greatest disappointment in my whole gaming carreer. When I saw the trialer and reviews I was really excited to play an immersive click and point adventure. What I got instead was a 4 hour long (4 HOURS) clunky game with a lot of red herrings and actually just no gameplay at all. To proceed in the story you just have to click on every object in the freaking house because there is often no logic to what objects or closets can be useful. Atmosphere and music were nice, but that's the only positives I could find. If this were a free game, it would be ok, but it isn't. Even with a big reduction, you could buy more useful stuff with your money (everything).

Positives: Nice soundtrack, good atmosphere sometimes, ok ending.

Negatives: Very short, expensive for what you get, HORRIBLE GAMEPLAY, story is very meh (only ending was ok).

Conclusion: 11/10 would not buy again.

I was really enjoying this game until I realized nothing it promised in the first half hour was actually part of the game at all. It's a house full of red herrings and a "mystery" that turns out to not be a mystery at all. Charging $20 for someone to read you a teenager's diary is not my idea of a good buy.

Gone Home is a fairly straightforward game. Through a standard first person control scheme, you are Kaitlin Greenbriar, eldest sister in the Greenbriar family, back from an extended European holiday only to find the Greenbriar family home utterly empty. The crux of the game is uncovering the mystery behind the disappearance of Kaitlin's family.

Gone Home's story is innately personal, which is why it ultimately feels hollow to witness it through the weird, voyeuristic second-hand experience of sorting through notes, filtering for meaningful information. Occasionally uncovering a milestone piece of information results in a narrated excerpt from Sam's diary, which frankly feels a little bit like cheating since the vast majority of Sam's story arc unfolds through these excerpts, rather than the notes.

Sam and Lonnie's relationship is the primary story arc of the game. It evolves from a subtext-laden friendship to a romance around the half-way point. I am nothing but sympathetic for this kind of thing; and it did hit me hardest when Sam described her mother, Janice Greenbriar, insisting that Sam was going through a "phase", "did not know what she wanted", and "just needed to meet the right guy", but this isn't a story about runaway lesbian teenagers, it's a story about an observer finding out about runaway lesbian teenagers after the fact.

This also isn't to mention the story arcs for the other characters--Terry's writing career, his obsession with the JFK assassination, his dead-end job as a hi-fi hardware reviewer, his alcoholism, and his wife's unfaithfulness--are more interesting than the relationship between Sam and Lonnie.

Gone Home's limited interactivity and 90s culture nostalgia aesthetic don't quite fill the gaps in a story loaded with cliches. In another medium, Gone Home wouldn't be considered anything remarkable. It also suffers from outdated visuals and poor engine optimization (pretty much the entire house is loaded into memory, physics objects and all).

It's important that as the video game industry reaches a larger audience and matures, we must also understand where mature criticism is necessary, where not to lump blind praise, and where to hold a game to the same standards that everyone else receives. I do not think Gone Home's praise is deserved, but I do not think its hate is either.

Gone Home is an interesting experiment in taking the kind of environmental storytelling dating all the way back to System Shock to its furthest conclusion, but not much more than that (and I feel a little insulted that the first number code in the game is 0451).

So many positive reviews from critics and review sites on this game, but in my opinion it's not a good game at all.

New York Times called it the "Best love story ever told in a video game".. That is just an utter lie and a downright insult to the ocean of games with beautiful love stories told in them.

Story is cute sure, but in the end it is shallow and dissapointing. The atmosphere is good and sometimes even creepy, though it's not supposed to be. As for gameplay there is none, just walking and rotating objects. The whole game is over in less than 2 hours and there is no replay value.

Only worth buying on sale if you're having a boring night,

Without a doubt the worst game in my Steam Library. Probably in all of my complete game collection.
Finished this "game" in 5 minutes without knowing it. 0/10

Update/Repost: The developers censor the Steam Community. I'll carry it like a badge of honor.

And yes. Your game is still summed up best by: Pretentious overhyped garbage.
