I bought this when it first came out and all the collusion and high reviews were posted and it was made to look like a horror game. Nope. Tumblr lesbians. 90's kids. Don't buy this.

The native language of this game is: Empathy.
If you do not speak it, and can not understand it, all that is good, human and nuanced to this game will be hard to make out.

It is worth learning to speak that language... and not just for this game...
If you don't speak it yet, perhaps because you haven't had time enough to really look into it, start putting in the effort and come back here when you have a grasp on it.
Just like Jokes and Poems, some things tend lose their impact if some one tries to translate them for a non-native speaker.

Know what you're in for.
Don't make an uninformed purchase.
It is only as good as you make it. If you wanna be disappointed by setting the bar very high, you will be.

I'm surprised how immersive Gone Home was for me. The design of the world and its objects are very cohesive. Everythings looks handmade. There is very few digital text. It's like an exhibition, an examinable time capsule of the mid 90s.

The house is an evidence orgy. It is a little unbelieveable how many notes and documents are lying around everywhere. Some are okay, but this many is absurd. And the pieces do not always give much room for interpretation. It's a little too on-your-nose as if they were afraid the player wouldn't get it or wasn't very curious. The places where certain pieces are, that correspond to one another, are also a little contrived. It doesn't feel natural, as if this was a scavanger hunt. Basically it is. The developers set this up to guide you along a so-so determined path. The farthest rooms are to be visited last. It would be best to proceed systematically and examine every room throughly. Then you have to do very little backtracking.

It wouldn't be as satisfying and conclusive if the world was more organic. In that case you would have to interrupt your experience yourself when you had enough. Gone Home managed to create a story arc with a logical end.

I advice you to turn up the brightness. You don't wanna enter a dark corridor without knowing where the light switch is unless you want to be annoyed.
Also, the low camera sensitiveness on the gamepad is unacceptable, even when set to max. Be forgiving with that or play with mouse & keyboard.

I was disappointed with this title.
1. Too short.
2. Predictable story.
3. 99% of what you do is walk through and find clickable objects to hear more of the story. Essentially, it's a short audiobook with a game map.

The one thing I did like was the atmosphere of the house. Definitely not enough to have been worth $9.99.

This game has a really simply story. A girl comes home to her family's new house after being away from them for a year, but no one seems to be home. It's your job to explore the house and find out what's going on. The best part about this game is the atomsphere. It is so mysterious. You'll want to explore every section of the house. It's hard to explain why I like this game so much cause when you take a step back after completing the game the story was really simple and some might same lame but the way it is presented made it so interesting and I honestly wanted to know more and more about this family. This game isn't for everyone but if you like atomspheric games and story rich games like Bioshock or Dishonored you'll love this game. Also I urge you to take your time with this game don't rush through it be thorough and really try to find every secret letter and clue. Amazing game 10/10.

Even though the time of gameplay is really short, the way the story is told is wonderfull, the story itself is great, and the game is really immersive. For the time spent playing, I wouldn't say it's worth the full price, but if it's on sale, it's totally worthy, and a must-have for those who value stories on games.

I was attracted by this game because of the attention it had and because A friend of mine was playing on PS4, so I decided to give it a shot.

Gone home is a walking simulator, so you just... walk... and interact with items around the house to better understand what the developer want to tell you.
You're Kaitlin Greenbriar and you've just arrived home after travelling abroad for a year. Nobody's home and that's all the game will tell you. According to the genre description you'll have to walk around the house to look for items, notes, writings, letters and anything else that can be picked up as it might keep some clue to better understand the context and what happened in your house. Each time you'll read an important note or examine an important object a voice will tell a story, in form of a diary message.

The house is really immense and holds "secrets" and closed zones that will motivate you to "investigate" further.
Rooms and ambiences are built with care and attention to details and elements of decoration even though models and textures are not very detailed.
The game has been developed with Unity and I can't really be much positive about this as I haven't still played a well optimized game built with Unity. It usualy gives really high and pretty details and models (layers of fear) with high Hardware requirements, or games with a modest look but still be heavy as hell such as Gone Home. Even with detailed shadows off it hardly renders over 30 FPS and for some unknown reason every time I launch the game it kind of freezes every first time I try to open the graphics menu and I have to CTRL+ALT+DEL And restore the game's windows to find the Graphics menu magically opened.

There's no music ingame. If you want it you can interact with items around the house, as you will find musicassettes with tape players and also a gramophone. But they are kind of related to the story as they mostly reflect the characters to whom they belong.

What left me kind of disappointed is the mood of the game, as this empty and dark house really gives chills and there are supernatural subplots that deviate your attention from the main story and makes you more interested in them except that this IS NOT a horror game and you will always suspect the opposite for the whole time until the end that will confirm you that there's no supernatural, never was and it has nothing to do with the main story. I mean it's okay to create subplots o divert your attention and hit you with a final revelation but i think they did too well.

  • STORY. Thrown in your giant home after a long travel, everyone gone, you have to peek around to understand what happened and where is everyone. All the elements and documents will tell you more about your family, their story and nature, and you will feel involved with them as their everyday stories will catch your interest. This is the real core of this game.

  • STORY & MOOD. Unfortunately a couple of the subplots might divert your attention too much and the dark rooms, little revelations and the emptiness of the house will only boost interest feeding the feeling this game is going to get a Horror twist... But it doesn't. And it doesn't have to because that's not the point of the game and I believe the developers have pushed this unnecessary mood a bit too much.
  • ENGINE. I still haven't played a game built with unity that is well optimized. Gone Home doesn't excel with High poly models or great textures, nor it has so many effects in game, yet it was hard to play with more than 30 FPS. I also had to turn off some shadow details to get those performances.
  • ACHIEVEMENTS. There are no achievements but there are trophies for the PS4 release. Now, I did my research and seems like the developers themself are explicitly working on some bugfux release that will include achievements themself. The moment I'll notice the update I will edit my review, but until now this point will stay here, even if it's something useless as achievements I can't stand differences in releases "Because Sony"...

While this walking simulator actually has puzzles to solve and a decent atmosphere, it is a very short game.

It should only be purchased at 75% off or more (if games that are just slightly interactive stories are your cup of tea that is).

This "game" is far better than Dear Esther. That's about the only kind thing I can say about it.

I started this game with very high expectations considering all the great reviews it's gotten. What I found was a ridiculously short experience with a kind of lackluster story. When I finished, I immediately thought, "That's it?" I don't want to spoil the story, but it really left me feeling like I had missed something. Or a lot of somethings. It's like the writers got halfway through and just said "OK, let's end it here." There's no plot development or twists at all. If you're looking for a short feelgood story of young love, then this is the game for you, but otherwise, you will be disapointed.

I got this game on sale, I think for just under $5. I don't think I got my money's worth, I'm sad to say. If you're curious about this game and you can find it under $5 like I did then it might be worth it but anything more would be spending too much. If I had bought this game when it first came out I would have been ♥♥♥♥♥♥ I spent $20 on it. I really wanted it when it came out too.
The story in the game was really good and hit me in the feels at the end but the process to get there was exhausting. It felt more like a strain to keep going just to get to the end than instead of it being an enjoyable experience. Sam's voice actor really pulled it together and made it worth the play but without the voice acting this game really doesn't have anything going for it.

Thank God I got this in a Humble Bundle deal and didn't pay anywhere near the price they are asking for it. With that said, it's still not even worth the time to play if you get it for free. You walk around a house to find out meaningless details of the lives of meaningless people who overdramatise said meaningless details.

-10/10 Absolute piece of garbage.

All I can say is that the atomosphere is really nice. if they made a horror game it would be pretty sweet.

If you are looking for a spooky game this isn't for you. This is a story driven walking simulator game. Buy this when it's on sale. Gone Home is a nice game to play when you need to something to do.

Well, at the sales price I definitely recommend the game. I kind of got Life is Strange vibes when playing. I finished it in about 3 hours, but I took a lot of time looking for everything and having no mouse slowed me down. So it's a pretty short game. I found it interesting overall, but I was expecting more. The storyline didn't really shock me, but I suppose it's an emotional game. I was hoping for to see a ghost or something... I was pretty spooked at the beginning of the game, but all of that went away about 10 minutes in. But it's not supposed to be a horror game in the first place so it's not really anything to complain about. I also feel like the description of the game makes it seem like something more intense is supposed to happen and the ending would unfold something shocking, maybe even sinister. Overall, yeah, for the sales price I would recommend it. It was still enjoyable and it genuinely made me emotional at times. I wouldn't have spent 20 bucks on it though.
