You arrive home after a year abroad. You expect your family to greet you, but the house is empty. Something's not right. Where is everyone? And what's happened here? Unravel the mystery for yourself in Gone Home, a story exploration game from The Fullbright Company.

Gone Home is an interactive exploration simulator. Interrogate every detail of a seemingly normal house to discover the story of the people who live there. Open any drawer and door. Pick up objects and examine them to discover clues. Uncover the events of one family's lives by investigating what they've left behind.

Go Home Again.

Key Features

  • A Personal Story: created by veterans of the BioShock series and the writer behind Minerva's Den, Gone Home offers the rich, nuanced details of one family's struggles to deal with uncertainty, heartache, and change.

  • An Immersive Place: return to the 1990s by visiting a home where every detail has been carefully recreated, and the sounds of a rainstorm outside wrap you in the experience.

  • No Combat, No Puzzles: Gone Home is a nonviolent and puzzle-free experience, inviting you to play at your own pace without getting attacked, stuck, or frustrated. This house wants you to explore it.

  • Fully Interactive Investigation: discover what's happened to the Greenbriars by examining a house full of the family's personal possessions, and the notes and letters they've left behind. Use your powers of observation to piece together a story that unfolds as you explore.

This was a truly fantastic experience. I had watched playthroughs of this game 3 or 4 times and when I saw the sale on humble bundle I figured that I should probably give it a go as well. Let me tell you, no ammount of lets plays or walkthroughs of this game can really give you the full experience of this wonderful story. Notes that I had seen multiple times before still made me chuckle and smile, the twists and turns still made me anxious and the character development still left me in awe. I swear if I had paid full price for this game, knowing nothing about it going in, $20 dollars would be well worth it in my opinion. Just a measly $20 for such an unforgetable experience such as this should not turn you away. Trust me it will be worth it.

3D Graphics 8/10 (the models were great, some of the textures were v low res)
2D Graphics 10/10 (brilliant and witty)
Audio 7/10 (only because some of the interaction sounds were much louder than the rest)
Ammendment 8/10 (the cassette music is perfect)
Story 10/10 (one of the most well written stories in gaming ive ever experienced)

This is a fantastic game. Being tagged as a walking simulator game, it may not appeal to some. It can be completed quickly but it is intended to be played more slowly. By looking at all the details the objects have to offer, it builds a very deep story.

The voice acting was top notch and the developer commentary is worth going through after completing the game.

Amazing game! I really enjoyed the 4 hours playing it (if you look at everything and don't hurry). Touching story that I personally found so interessing because there aren't many games dealing with that specific topic. Very well made game for people who like quiet games with a good storyline and a slightly creepy atmosphere.

Gone Home only takes a couple hours to play through. If you want to truly enjoy the story then don't rush through it. Take your time, look around, go through things, and do your best to find all the clues hidden around the house to truly appreciate the game. Gone Home does a great job with the atmosphere and I recommend giving it your time.

This game has one of the best romance plots I have ever played! Seriously. The story never seemed forced, had it's natural progression and twists and turns all in the span of around 2 hours and a half. Bravo for the realism, atmosphere, and the emotions it made me feel.

I'd gladly play more games that The Fullbright Company makes. Gone Home was a wonderful experience.

It seems fairly predictable but the voice acting really made the story meaningful for me to the point of getting emotional. Please buy this on sale, it's not worth 20 dollars but it's definitely worth a play through if you enjoy story driven walking games such as Dear Esther.

This game can be completed in around an hour, 2 if you look through everything.

I'm a bottle of wine deep while I played this game and am now writting this. You've been warned. I'll try to make this spoiler free. I know this is a few years old now, but I just finished it moments ago and felt compeled to write this. Probably becuase of the wine. ;)
This game takes me back a couple of decades when life was simpler, yet more complicated. Less real world responsibilites, but more responisiblities to be with your friends. When music was written from and wrenched your guts. When you had the ability to conquer the world, and rebel against any and all injustices! This is the story of youth and all that comes with it.
Needless to say this game hit a lot of nostalgic notes with me. It began by making me curious and by the end made me shed a tear. This game can't be explained without spoiling it. So lets just say that it's story is worth being told. And if you were a child of the 90s there's a lot of nods to that most wonderous decade.

I thought Gone Home was a great game. It's short, and not to much of a challenge if you're just looking for something with a good story. There's lots to explore and mess with. Forgive me for living in the 90s, but the music on the cassette tapes was awesome! It was a great game, but know that if you're not into purely story/exploration games, this probably isn't for you.

I don't understand what the hype is all about. This game was mediocre at best. The preview made it seem like there was a huge mystery to be solved, as to why your family is gone. The storyline was mundane and very predictable about halfway through. I expected the game to be short but not 2 hours short. I think I'm mostly aggravated at the fact that I spent $20 dollars on this garbage.

hahha gone home is the best game of all time, i have never played a game as incredibly detailed as gone home. the relaistic walking mechanics. the lack of interaction with anything. just walk, pick up things, and hear your sister'sangelic voice. the ending made me cry, i cried for 7 hours. i am in love. this is my favorite game. this is amazing romance. i am burning every other game i own in a fire, i need them no more. only gone home. i think everyone should own a copy of gone home. i want to make love to you, gone home.

i'm leaving my girlfriend, for we have a relationship that's nothing like sam and lonnie's. i wont allow that. i want to love someone who is exaclty like lonnie. i am changing my name to sam greenbrier. i am investing in a mansion. this is the only game for me. i want to live in this world. man, gone home, the best game.

so bad. soo bad. Theres nothing to play or see in this game. Nothing happens at all. All there is to do is open drawers and read ♥♥♥♥♥♥ letters of your relatives so you can find out the back story. No puzzles, no real story, no nothing. There's nothing in this game. The game tries to entertain and stress you with different rooms and fails missebrably with uninteresting design choices. Once you read the final letter of the story, it throws the lamest excuse for a game in your face.

don't believe the internet hype and stay away from this 'game' /10

Can't say how I feel about this game. There are two conflicting parts in it for me that really make recommending this game hard for me:

THE GOOD:
The gameplay is probably one of the greatest representation of how a walking simulator should play. There's a huge mansion to walk around to your heart's content and interact with the objects in every room. The mansion feels lived-in and pretty detailed in all aspects. The graphics aren't TOO realistic but so much thought has been put in little details scattered throughout the house that it felt truly unique and rewarding to explore.

Once you start exploring, you'll come across the story of the empty house and slowly but surely work your way up to the reasons why the house is empty when you arrive from your trip. This leads to the only negative aspect of the game.

THE BAD:
I swear I've read better lesbian fan fiction written by my 14-year-old niece than the stuff represented in here. The main character which is the primary focus of the story (who is also the main character's younger sister) is Sam. A punk-rock loving teen rebel who doesn't know the difference between the stains in her panties and the strawberry jam on her toast ....and thinks she's a lesbian because her parents probably didn't give her enough attention and the new highschool she's moved to doesn't regard her as a royal princess.

So she does what most teens do when they feel they're under pressure: going gay (well, to give credit to some of the more creative ones, they could go bisexual).

I don't know if this was a dark cautionary tale written by parents for parents with rebelious teens or by actual horny, shallow teens who want to express the diversity in probably the most woefully controversial and important subjects on the western youth's general mindset: sexuality... because that's the only freedom they feel they have.... I guess? I don't know whether to take the story seriously especially when it turns out to be a faulty, shallow and unexciting romance without a solid basis for a good story.

To be honest, I don't care after Gone Home's ending because I feel exhausted after tagging along with the game which promises mysterious twists and turns and puts me in a very interesting environment for around 3 hours just to keep slapping me left and right with its ovaries and finally unload its full load of estrogen on my face.

On the other hand, if you're into walking simulators or want to experience the interactive bliss which can be achieved through this genre, by all means check Gone Home out. The detailed environments and the general atmosphere was what pulled me towards finishing it.

MARGINAL THUMBS UP

Overrated.

I'm sure I'm gonna get flak for this since people "love the story so much," but I bought this game expecting, well, a game. This is little more than an animated storybook with no real interaction besides the basic "walk from point A to point B to progress the story."

If this was just a $0.99 feature or something, it wouldn't have been as dissapointing but for $20 it definitely isn't worth it.

It's funny. I didn't really LOVE this game originally, but something about this game is pulling me back in. It's a great story with amazing atmosphere that I just didn't fully appreciate on the first play through (mostly because I thought it was going to be a horror game). Gone Home excels brilliantly at what it set out to do. Which was (incase you failed to notice) to create a short piece of environmental storytelling about a stressed out family against a 90's backdrop. Because of the setting, the game can be treated like a time capsule of sorts.

You explore an empty house, read a lot, listen to diary entries from a young woman coming to terms with her sexuality, look at zines, listen to Corin Tucker sing empowering feminist punk, etc.
You are likely to either adore this game and hold it dear to you, or discuss with your friends how much you hate it, and how much of a joke it is.

Due to the nature of exploring a family home devoid of people, the game leaves a lot to your imagination. If you are anyone like me, when you enter a character's bedroom you are likely going to sit around wondering what times the owner and her girlfriend shared there. You will sit around in the basement wondering what the punk show you are reading about was like for everybody involved.
That's why I personally like this game, how it flawlessly puts you in a state of melancholy, reading about these fantastic experiences as you, the player, roam around this big empty house alone with a bittersweet ambient soundtrack twanging away in the background.
These people were your family. Your sister has grown up into her own woman, your parents are in the process of rekindling their marriage after heavy difficulties, and your father's career is looking up after all.

Maybe im biased because im a girl who loves the culture spawned by the Riot Grrrl movement. Who knows. Either way this game stands alongside Thief: TDP and Rule of Rose as my three most beloved games.

I loved Gone Home. I'm a little surprised by some of the negative reviews. As long as you have the right expectations going into the game, it is a fantastic experience. This is a short, interactive story about a family dealing with a number of issues, and the process of discovering exactly what has happened to them. The narrative is revealed gradually as you explore a vacant house, and the game effectively builds suspense as it plays with your expectations about what you're going to find. The soundtrack and '90s setting also enhance the experience tremendously. If you're expecting a lot of action, or in-depth puzzle solving, you're going to be disappointed. But if you're open to simply participating in a well-crafted, mysterious short story, you may find Gone Home to be as moving as I did.

This game was very cute and amazing. I thought it would be a horror game when I first saw it, but it definitely was not what I expected. The only things that actually scared me was the thunder crashes, and the darkness within the house (that was only because I didn't know what to expect). This isn't a game to rush through, you really need to absorb to the story to really enjoy it. I am still left with some questions, but that does not ruin the game for me.

Gone Home is a first-person interactive story adventure set in 1995. The premise is that you have 'gone home' on a stormy night to a new house that your family have moved into whilst you have been away travelling. You arrive home to discover that the house is empty, and you must try and find out why no-one is there.

This story gives off a bit of a creepy vibe initially, and I have to say that I found it a little off-putting. I played this game through recommendation, and I don't like playing psychological thrillers which is where I thought this game was going to go. Thankfully, that is not what this game is - even though it has its creepy moments, and does hint at something sinister going on around the house, this just isn't the case in terms of the overall story.

Ultimately the story is about family, and how you unravel the details about your family from finding 'clues' around the house - audio narrated journals, letters, books, brochures, etc. The audio journals are beautifully voice acted by Sarah Grayson, and really draw you into the story.

If the story hadn't have been so engrossing (purely because of the audio journals), I think I would have been a little bored playing this. Objects that you could look at around the house weren't frequent or interesting enough to keep my attention. Certainly the house had a nice nostalgic feel to it, but it would have been better if you could have interacted with far more around the house. After opening drawers and cupboard doors to find the same 'absolutely nothing' over and over, it did often feel like a bit of a chore.

This game is available on Steam at a cost of £14.99, and as far as I'm concerned this price is absolutely extortionate. Though I enjoyed the game, I completed it in less than 90 minutes having looked, I feel, quite thoroughly at the objects the game gave me to look at. Having bought games on Steam for £6.99 that I've played for more than 20 times longer, I don't really see how they can justify this price.

If there had been more to interact with around the house, even if it was being able to look at clothes in cupboards, or being able to flick through channels on TV, or to play more music in the house, anything at all, maybe then it would have been worth a higher price-tag as it would have kept you involved in the environment for much longer. I understand the house was bare because your family hadn't long since moved in there, but it just felt far too under-developed. I appreciate that the game is about the story, and not the house, but if more time had been invested in making the house more realistic and accessible, it would have made it a much more well-rounded package overall.

Ultimately, if you're after a short game to get your teeth into with a very well delivered story-line, this will be one that you want to try out, though I heartily recommend you wait until it's on sale because I think you'll be disappointed at paying full price for such a short experience, however well it delivers that experience.

Explore Katie's family's empty house to discover what happened since she left in this story-driven walking simulator.

Gameplay-wise, there isn't much here. You'll be slowly walking through a seemingly boring house for the 2 hours of gameplay Gone Home provides. But what you do is not the focus of this game: story takes centerstage. Bits and pieces of what Katie's family has been up to in her absence are slowly revealed by inspecting household objects, cassette tapes, and plenty of notes and memos scattered around the house. The game rewards you with more details on each of the characters's lives by scouring the house's every nook and cranny for hidden notes. It's certainly not for everyone, but if you're intrigued, you're going to like it.

Because the game's main appeal is it's story, it would be a disservice to give away any more than the basic premise. This is an experience that needs to be played in order to be fully appreciated. I felt a connection to each of the characters despite never even seeing them once; mad props to the developer for keeping me invested in these people solely through the letters they left behind for me to find.

Gone Home is a unique and engaging gaming experience that surprised me in a number of ways. Check it out if you're looking for something different that will leave you with a unique impression.

Since I didn't feel like a deep game due to my cold, I went for some light gaming earlier. Started & finished Gone Home in a single sitting. Cannot remember a previous time doing this. Game is very short which is not automatically a bad thing, mind you. Easily shorter than 3 hours on a first run. And that by collecting all Journal entries, cassettes, pins and whatnot.

So, my thoughts. I went in with pretty much no knowledge of the game beforehand, so the game being a lesbian love-story was not expected. It's a light exploration game with minimal interaction and a focus on passive character development. I do enjoy exploring places and learning about the world via audio logs and texts when done right. This is a mixed bag. First of all, there is too little variation in characters with basically only two people having exposure, Sam, your sister and Lonnie, her love interest. That is a shame since the general cast of people is already very small, less than 10. With only Sam and Lonnie getting spotlight the exploration and adventure portion feels underused. Even though there are tidbits here and there about your parents and the previous home owner, it is just held too superficial with few, unvoiced texts and feels way too overlooked by the writing itself, so it looses any importance it could have had. The love story is done OK with an emphasis on emotions but all other characters besides Sam and Lonnie are done without any emotion at all which makes them look like robots. A real shame since slowly seeing more and more of the house would have fit very nicely by weaving various character arcs into the layout of the home. On that, the many secret passages became a real immersion breaker not by the idea itself - which fits an old, big manor with an interesting previous owner - but by sheer amount and usage. They just got away with it bearing in mind the previous owner but then again, like with other stuff it falters by underutilizing that as well. A little side story about the past owner would have been fitting. But alas, the house feels not enough like a real home but like a playground for Sam & Lonnie who only used those places. It almost feels like neither parents nor the bigger sister are a part of the house at all.
Journal entries (audio logs) were done OK. It's a very little story, written OK as well. Couldn't connect towards the very ending, thinking two kids basically ran away. They are only seventeen. Feels like writers took a very cliche easy way out with the ending by making it overtly emotional with that runaway. A little inconsistency in logic with Sam was also there. At the beginning she writes her sister not to rummage around (and possibly learn anything) but towards the end she explicitly has left her messages in places only accessible by turning over the whole house? Eh, gotta throw a bit of sense out of the window to have emotional ending I guess. That goes for the whole very short game. High on emotion, at times feels forced by sheer lack of any other aspect.
Not sure I'd recommend this. It offers very little in substance and variety. If you can overlook the narrow focus and at times forced story events, you will have some fun exploring the big house and basking in 90s nostalgia though. Wish there was a neutral option on Steam reviews.

This game was a huge disappointment. You spend a ton of time walking around a big house, examining hundreds of boring everyday objects. There are 3 locked doors and if you walk around long enough you find the keys to open them.

It never gets interesting, and the ending to the story is obvious about halfway through. No challenges, no skill required, not even really any thinking involved. Just walking around clicking mundane objects with no results

I wish I could get my money back on this. Don't waste yours.

This would be a great game if it wasnt so terrible. I think i should charge the person who gifted me this with criminal harassment. It is a truly unique experience and will show you what the world will look like once tumblr takes over the universe

I will include a walkthrough of the game below

A 2 hour long interactive picture book if you look for EVERYTHING that lasts about an hour at most (maybe longer if you don't read well, actually sit through all the sloooowly spoken dialogue, or have trouble finding stuff, I spent a LOT of time looking for things that just weren't there trying to prove to myself that I didn't waste my money). That's the best way to describe this. Would have made an ok short story, but as a game it's just dull. Pick a thing up, read something or someone talks to you, move to the next thing.

This tends to be my view of all walking sims, they're picture books you interact with, and honestly I'd rather just read it if there's no meat to it. No real puzzles, no challenges and most importantly no failure state means I just can't support this being called a game. And YES there could have been plenty of little challenges to make it a "game". This is the story, from what I remember, of a teenager, they couldn't have owned a puzzle box or two to hold their things? Couldn't have had some diary entries or notes written in code? Couldn't have had a story item hidden and put 2-3 clues for a neat scavenger hunt? Yes I did these things as a teenager, and yes it was fun. You can have walking sims (which are interactive books, not games) and add content that will make it into a game. It's not hard if you try.

Now I love me the hell out of narrative, story is the most important thing in a game to me, but when the story wouldn't even be 20 pages if it were in a book, then why am I paying so much for it in "game" form? If this were 2-3 bucks I'd probably say to give it a try if you like this sort of thing, but for 20 damn bucks? No, not on your life. When you can watch the game on youtube and get the EXACT SAME experience as playing it yourself, then: 1 it's not a game and 2 the dev failed to even try to make it one.

TL;DR: An interactive pop up book basically that's not terrible like some people say, however charging 20 bucks for this "game" is a sure fire sign that the devs are too damn full of themselves. 5 bucks MIGHT be ok for this but not 20 bucks. There are hundreds of much MUCH better games out there with stories as good or better than this that feature actual game play. And for a lot of them you can get 5 or 6 of those games for the same price.
