Rocket Launchers + unrivaled level design + Dark Medieval Fantasy + Lovecraft + Nine Inch Nails soundtrack

Best shooter ever made.

Also, the Ultimate Quake Patch is obligatory.

Ah, the classic genre of First-Person Shooters; how you have devolved over the years. I can't stand most modern shooters, as I find cover-based shooting, regenerating health, two-weapon systems and everything else that modern games have screwed up annoying. So, I decided to enter the hypothetical time machine and go back to 1996. I bought Quake, and immediately I found it appealing.

Quake is fast-paced FPS at its finest. It is all about killing hordes of baddies with multiple unique weapons in large, semi-maze-like levels that look like actual effort was put into designing them, something you don't often see these days. The weapons are all enjoyable to use, and are all different from eachother. Enemies come in many varieties, and each enemy type requires its own strategy to take it down. And, this game is also rather difficult, even on "easy", but that's why there is a quick-save button.

Quake is a prime example of what made 90s shooters fun. It doesn't hold your hand the whole way through like modern games. No, it tells you to get to the exit, and leaves you to figure out how to get there. So, if you are looking for a FPS that will challenge you and entertain you equally, get Quake. It's only $10 on Steam, and it will run on pretty much any Windows computer.

A must buy for anyone ever - Quake offers a frantic shooter experience like no other and stands among the best games ever created. id Software has once again pushed the limits of gaming and has harnessed the true power of PC's processing power. Quake's fully 3D rendered maps make you weep in joy as you make your way through the dark castle corridors and mansion cellars while spraying lead - or in this case Nine Inch Nails - to the brains of the undead while listening to the terrific ambient soundtrack composed by Trent Reznor.
Oh, I recommend using the DarkPlaces Quake engine.

This was the first game I ever played; not the pc version, but the very bad N64 port. It features great level design and a veriety of weapons. Have you ever used the "Original" rocket launcher in Tf2? It is actually the rocket launcher featured in Quake. It features many frightning enemies, dreams of running down a long corridor being chased by Shamblers still haunt me. The game was the first 3d FPS with acctual; 3d models ever made, and can rival then likes of Duke Nukem 3D. Those were my Compliments, now here are my complaints:

1. For those who do not like old graphics...well.. these haven't aged well.

2. The game allways feels a little to short, I crave more levels.

3.I personally feel the game should be 7$, but thats just me

4. Again may be just me, but I allways had trouble with later levels even
on easy.

Conclusion: I find that Quake is a nifty little gem that will eat up some of your free time.

Final Rating
4 stars

PS: Watch out for shamblers :)

PPS: Why won't Steam let me put stars! :(
