“When we started developing Heroes & Generals it was with the intention of creating a game for the gamers as much as for ourselves. The games we have been creating in the past (back in the IO Interactive days) have all been shrouded in secrecy until they were released and therefore always carried a number of things that players did not like but we were unable to change. Because it is the players that in the end plays the game we think they should have greater influence on the development.

Since the very early days of the project in 2011 (pre-alpha stage), we invited players in to play the game and have involved our community in the making of Heroes & Generals and listened to the feedback from them. So it's a natural extension of the way we develop Heroes & Generals, to also include the Steam Community, by going Early Access.”

‘Battle Director’ handling war battles coming in Xylander Update

In Heroes & Generals there are two types of battles that players can join and fight.
Staged battles are auto generated battles that are fought independently of the war with evenly balanced resources for all factions. War-battles are on the other hand based on the actions of the officers and generals controlling Assault Teams in the war. This means that sometimes these battle can be very uneven in terms of resources available for the players and thereby less fun to play.

In order to avoid being thrown into the most unbalanced war battles we are introducing the Battle Director which is an algorithm that runs on the war server and is capable of identifying which battles are fun and suitable to be played and which aren’t. The fun battles can be joined as usual through either the matchmaker or by manually picking a battle, and the battles that are not fun will be auto-resolved by the Battle Director.

So for example war battles with very few resources on one side are not fun and will be auto-resolved.

The evaluation of the “funness” of a mission takes place for the first time n minutes after mission creation where n is equal to the mission preparation time setting. After 2n minutes the mission will be evaluated again and resolved according to the resolving rules below.

F.ex. if the mission preparation time is 5 minutes, then the first evaluation takes place when the preparation phase is over but no resolve will occur. 10 minutes after mission creation (5 minutes after the mission preparation time is over) the mission is either resolved if it’s not fun or continues to be available if it is fun.

The evaluation is repeated every n minutes after that. The evaluation stops when an action-game mission is launched for the according mission on the campaign map or the mission is resolved by the Battle Director.

A mission is declared to be “fun” if there are sufficient spawn tickets available for 18 players per faction in a 2-faction battle and 12 players per faction in a 3-faction battle. “Sufficient” tickets per player are defined according to the list below.
Infantry spawns per player: 10
Paratrooper spawns per player: 5
Tank spawns per player: 4
Plane spawns per player: 4
Recon spawns per player: 5

At least 50% of the players (9 for 2-faction missions, 6 for 3-faction missions per faction) need to be provided with with sufficient infantry or paratrooper tickets. The remaining players can be a mix of all classes.
Examples of a 2-faction fun mission
  • 180 infantry tickets
  • 90 paratrooper tickets
  • 90 infantry tickets (9 players) + 45 paratrooper tickets (9 players)
  • 60 infantry tickets (6 players) + 15 paratrooper tickets (3 players) + 8 tank tickets (2 players) + 8 plane tickets (2 players) + 25 recon tickets (5 players)

Above: Enough German Paratrooper & infantry spawns to be fun, not enough US infantry spawns.
Assault battles
  • Both factions fun: No resolve, the mission continues to be available
  • Attacker fun, defender no fun: Attacker loses nothing, defender loses 20 morale and supply (according to retreat rules) and retreats (if he can’t retreat he will get destroyed with 0 morale and 0 supply)
  • Attacker no fun, defender fun: Attacker loses 20 morale and supply (according to retreat rules) and retreats (if he can’t retreat he will get destroyed with 0 morale and 0 supply), defender loses nothing
  • Both no fun: attacker 20 loses morale and supply (according to retreat rules) and retreats (if he can’t retreat he will get destroyed with 0 morale and 0 supply), defender loses nothing
Skirmish battles
  • Both factions fun: No resolve, the mission continues to be available
  • Faction A fun, faction B no fun: A loses nothing and advances, B loses 20 morale and supply (according to retreat rules) and retreats
  • Both no fun: a winner A or B is declared randomly. The winner loses nothing and advances, the loser loses 20 morale and supply (according to retreat rules) and retreats
Final resolve
If a mission is not played within 30 minutes after the mission-preparation-time is over, a winner will be determined (according to the ticket evaluation rules of the previous auto-resolver system) and the mission will be ended. The winner will lose 10 morale (but no supply) while the loser will lose 20 morale (but no supply) and retreat (according to retreat rules).
As a reward for joining war battles we now give extra bonuses for engaging in the war. So you get a bonus for Rank XP and Ribbon XP when you play war battles, and this is now also the only way to earn warfunds besides commanding assault teams.

Map tweaks coming in Xylander Update!

In the upcoming Xylander update that we are currently testing, Reto.Desji and Reto.RedBjarne are including a round of tweaks and updates to the Town map and the Factory map. In a previous devstream we managed to corner BOTH of them and made them show these changes.

So take a look here (start at around 3:10)

Factory Map
  • Changed B3 (Gate building) capzone to be upper floor
  • Added several props to Gate building to make the new capzone more interesting
  • Opened up small O2 door when aproaching from A3 for easier pathing between those two points
  • Added an AA position to A1
  • Added more tankspawns on B-line accesspoint to make it less predictable for enemy tankers

Town map
The south-eastern part of the town map has been redone with additional houses and new streets giving more interesting close quarter combat in favor of infantry and also to gives the whole map a better village feel.

Additionally a high wall has been added to south of the churchyard making the church easier to defend against attackers from the southern attack lines.

This game used to be fantastic. One of my absolute favorite games, in fact. However, now that the game is somewhat popular, the devs have jacked the prices for everything way up. They doubled weapons, vehicle, modification, and repair prices, and they made XP collection an absolute nightmare. Unless, of course, you want to pay. It's very easy to tell who pays and who doesn't, because the people who pay are the ones who are driving around in heavy tanks, or running around blasting people with unbelievably OP guns, while the people who don't pay are the ones who get turned to hamburger by those who do. This game used to be great, but nowadays it's just a pay-to-win pile of ♥♥♥♥.

Its all about grinding credits...

Everything in this game costs you, granades, ammo repairs and after you have got some modifications to your weapons cost become so high that all progression halts. This is where normally you could in free to play games buy a premium membership and be done with it, but noooo... Not in this game. Here it only brings you 15% more credits and leaves you with the option to spend even more money to buy guns and upgrades with real money. This game is a text book example of pay to win game.

Unbalanced and focused towards players that have either been playing for 6 months +, or simply pay to win. Your regular line rifle takes 3 shots to kill, whereas the spam of upgraded bolt action rifles can one hit you. The prices for guns are ridiculous, the same as it takes to buy a tank, and the money to keep them repaired is insane. The game is a huge, steaming, pile of ♥♥♥♥ that will eventually crumble when people who have invested all their money into this game get bored because no one but them and their one hitting rifles, or hip firing LMGs are left.

The devs of this game decided to be both greedy and stupid and ruin a fine game.

So dont waste your time and especially dont waste your money on this.
