Here is the most honest review I can come up with:
HnG is a very fun game, the ambiance and gritty feeling of WW2 is conveyed well in this game. To most WW2 die hard fanatics, the arcade style of this game may not fit the bill for you. It can be very unrealistic at times and many of the weapons + vehicles operate on levels that are historically innaccurate. For an FPS, the game takes getting used to as things feel like they are clunky and slow at first. Some of the gun sights can be hard to get used to and there is alot of overcorrecting and sway handling to take account for on most guns to get good shots.
I primarily play as a Tanker, starting with the 19.99 tank pack that was previously offered. The tanks are awesome and provide a very interesting mode of play. Sticking your head out of the tank to get a good view of your surroundings can be risky as you can be sniped out of your tank and have it stolen.
There are snipers everywhere in this game, so running in open field is pretty much a death sentence for any unit. The sniper rifle is very easy to attain, even on infantry and you can easily get spawn camped by snipers.
If your just starting out without any gold, the game can be very frustrating and there is a P2W element. You may end up being sniper bait until you can afford something better, which takes time and grind.
Dropping a few bucks into a decent gun and vehicle can completely change the experience (for people who don't mind grinding up to get what you want, the option is there but it is painful -especially with high repair costs on certain items). With the cash shop, the redeeming factor is that your dollar goes a long way and you can get what you want to fit your playstyle relatively easily.
-Great atmosphere and feeling once you get the controls down
-Many dynamic ways to play by having your soldiers take specific roles such as infantry or tank pilot
-Maps are well designed and a good size, although I'm hoping for larger full scale maps with all unit types
-The strategy aspect of the game is expensive to get into but looks interesting
-Game balance. While fun HnG is far from balanced, especially with the US being far superior with their weapons and vehicles to the Germans. In staged battles the US Chaffe light tank is pretty much a medium tank with a light tank label. You can pretty much blow away every enemy tank uncontested with its 75mm turrent when the highest calibur that the german light tank turrets go is 35mm. Also the STUG tank hunter on the german side has no machine gun and the gunner seat is open, allowing your co-pilot to get sniped. The US hellcat equivalent has an enclosed gunner, built in machine gun, and better manuverability. The US thompson SMG is also OP as hell. Also as a tanker, regular infantry and mines/sticky bombs are overpowered. People regularly kamikaze themselves on you using motocycles and mines. The tanker has very little defense against this.
-Progression system: Repairs are expensive and sometimes you are forced into half completed battles that award you with less credits that it costs to refill your ammo. Grinding to get what you want can take a long long time without spending gold in the cash shop.
-Armor system. The armor system in the game is broken at the moment and doesnt work right, shells don't reflect right and I've been killed by 2 shots by an enemy tank on my Tiger II - the most armored tank in the game - even when the shells hit the front and most heavily armored section of my vehicle. It's pretty much just rolling dice right now.
-Snipers all over. I think the overabundance of snipers ruined the game, snipers should be limited to recon and the scoped rifle on infantry needs to go.
-P2W. You can grind to get anything in the game but it takes massive amount of times. Sinking a little bit of cash into the game to get something like the thompson or a better tank like the Chaffe can give you a huge advantage with the current game balance.
-Squad system. You can only form squads with people the same role as you, making it hard to create groups with friends if they like to play different roles such as infantry when you tank. Also tanking roles are divided into medium, heavy, and light category so if you want to play your heavy tank and your friend hasn't reached that tier you can't really squad with him. It's hard to find games where the vehicles or classes you want to play are deployed. I think this needs an overhaul.
As per the SPAATZ 2 update, I have been unable to get into the game to an action client crashed error that is rampant among many users. I've been out 5 days with a support ticket submitted to the game creators that has gone unanswered even thought its a critical issue. Be warned that support does not seem to respond in a timely manner so if you have technical issues, you could be out of luck for a long time.
The game definitely feels like BETA. It's a fun as hell beta, but the balance issues, bugs, unplayability steaks, and whatnot cannot be ignored. I like the game, when it works its great! However, I won't deny that you can run into huge frustrations with P2W and certain game systems not functioning the way they should.
I feel that HnG has the potential to be a really great WW2 arcade game. I think some P2W adjustments, balance adjustments (especially on the german side), and polish of certain game systems is needed. For potential players I would advise letting the game cook in the oven a bit longer and to watch the title but not play it until another major update hits.
Also support can use alot of work, no player should be locked out of the game for more than 5 days with no support response.
In the current state of the game:
Is it fun? Yes.
However, in the game's current state with the bugs, P2W, unplayability, support issues, and bugged systems I could not honestly recommend it until these issues are ironed out.
