Xmas is a time for playing Heroes & Generals

We have spent the last few weeks writing and talking a lot about how friendly players get more game – and we appreciate that a lot of you have taken part in the debate.

However, it is time to turn our attention to the next update for Heroes & Generals. You will get the first glimpse of the new content in our DevStream tomorrow at 15:00 CET on Twitch – and if all goes according to plan the DevStream will also be live on Facebook as a test-run.

But for now it is the 1st of December and we thought a genuine Christmas story would be suitable.

Xmas is also time for truce
One of our favorite World War 2 Christmas stories takes place December 24th 1944 in a hunting cabin in Hurtgen Forest. That is just over six kilometers from Monschau, Germany near the Belgian border.

Elisabeth Vincken and her 12-year-old son, Fritz, were preparing their Christmas dinner, when they heard a knock on the door. Outside stood three young American soldiers, one of them wounded.

Knowing full well that harboring enemy soldiers was punishable by death, she decided to invite the soldiers inside anyways. They couldn’t speak German, she didn’t know any English but they managed to communicate in French.

A few hours later there was another knock at the door. Four hungry and freezing German soldiers were looking for a warm place to stay for the night. Elisabeth Vincken told them to leave their weapons outside, and that she would not tolerate any shooting on this evening.

To no surprise there was tension and fear between the soldiers in the cabin. However, they all sat down to eat together. They relaxed. And one of the German soldiers, being an ex-medical student, treated the wounded American.

After a good night’s sleep the soldiers parted ways peacefully. The German pointed the Americans toward their camp and gave them a compass to find their way.

This story was featured in an episode of the tv-series “Unsolved Mysteries” in 1995, where Fritz Vincken got to meet one of the American soldiers again. In 2002 the story was made into the movie Silent Night.

Tell your own Christmas story
If you like Christmas stories as much as we do, you should keep an eye out for the next RBS-challenge.

It will be posted in our forums tomorrow and announced on our DevStream.

Meet the Developers – Reto.Colding

You are already devoted to the game and know every bit of it? Now we think it is time that you get to know the team a little better and this is why from now on, we will present you one of our Developers every week. With all the funny, interesting and unexpected bits about each of us.

What’s the story of the tag?
Colding is my surname. Apparently it comes from when my ancestors lived in a city called Kolding – dunno why it’s with a “C” …it’s rather fancy though …. Or not. At least it sounds badass when most people pronounce it in English… a bit like “Cold Thing” though the real way to pronounce it in English is the same as “Culling” or “Calling” :).

What is your position and what does that mean?
Animation and Video. We are a small studio so most of us have a lot of “hats” and responsibilities. Besides the obvious tasks of animating characters and vehicles and also making our videologs and trailers – I have done a lot of the effects, the weather settings (night, day, fog etc), screenshots, rigging, skinning and twitch producing – heck i am even in our sound board 🙂

What was the best thing to work on so far?
Recently I made our Launch trailer which was a lot of fun. I have a lot of love for character animation though … so I would say the whole thing 🙂

What are you excited about in the future?
I am really looking forward to evolving our character in game with new and varied animations and improved movement control. The more success we have, the better a game we can produce and the future looks bright.

What did you do before Reto?
I have been in the animation business since 1995. For the first 8 years doing Animated Feature Films, Shorts, Commercials. Since 2003 I have worked in the Computer Games Industry. Released games include : “Total Overdose”, “ChiliConCarnage”, “GameGlobe”. Unreleased games include “Bonnie & Clyde”, “Faith & a 45”, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” …amongst others.

What is the best thing about working at Reto?
My colleagues! Yes – its cool to work in the middle of Copenhagen, Yes – its a great game that will come out of our efforts and Yes – its great to work in computer games… but when it all comes down to what makes me want to go to work… its spending half of my life (awake) being around good colleagues that are kind, helpful and professional…

What is your favourite thing about H&G?
When the action game suddenly feels like an action movie which it does occasionally … and when you play with friends and your plan works out it’s all worth the long haul.

What are your hobbies?
I like cars and cameras – that pretty much sums up my hobbies apart from the occasional poker game – also I play a truck load of minecraft with my kids 🙂

Favourite Games/Games that inspired you to have a career in games?
Ouch … thats a tough one… (C64) : “Zorro”, “DefenderOfTheCrown”, “TheEidolon”, “WhoDaresWin”, “TheLastNinja”, “InternationalKarate”… (Amiga) : “ShadowOfTheBeast”, “Speedball”, “Populus” (Consoles) : “ToombRaider”, “Zelda”, “GranTurismo”, “Forza”, “GuitarHero” (PC) : “Unreal/StrikeForce”, “BattleField”, “GTR” …amongst others.

What are your favourite films?
(Animation) : “Akira”, “SpiritedAway”, “Totoro”, “Laputa”, “ToyStory”, “Up”, “Valhalla” (LiveAction) : “THX1138”, “StarWars IV,V,VI,VII”, “TheRoyalTennenBaums”, “DerUntergang”, “ApocalypseNow”, “TheSevenSamurai”, “Ran”, “Alien” (Series) : “MadMen”, “Dexter”, “GOT”, “True Detective” …among others.

Random Fun Fact about you
I am a twin and my twin basically does the same as I do… I used to work for a games company and when I quit my twin brother took over my job shortly after I left…. They had some really interesting Leads Meetings following his takeover 😀
