Kehittäjien kertomaa:

Miksi Early Access?

“When we started developing Heroes & Generals it was with the intention of creating a game for the gamers as much as for ourselves. The games we have been creating in the past (back in the IO Interactive days) have all been shrouded in secrecy until they were released and therefore always carried a number of things that players did not like but we were unable to change. Because it is the players that in the end plays the game we think they should have greater influence on the development.

Since the very early days of the project in 2011 (pre-alpha stage), we invited players in to play the game and have involved our community in the making of Heroes & Generals and listened to the feedback from them. So it's a natural extension of the way we develop Heroes & Generals, to also include the Steam Community, by going Early Access.”

Miten kauan Early Access -vaihe suunnilleen kestää?

“We're approaching the end of our Open Beta/Early Access phase, but it's still too soon for us to put a date on when we'll launch.”

Miten täysi versio eroaa Early Access -versiosta?

“We're still tweaking, fixing bugs and adding new features to Heroes & Generals, and even though we feel that the game is now fun and quite stable, we still wish to get all things 'just right' before we call it 'launched'.

We do not plan to do a full server reset when the game launches.”

Millainen on Early Access -version nykyinen tila?

“We're in the end of our Open Beta phase, preparing for launch.”

Hinnoitellaanko peli toisin Early Accessin aikana ja sen jälkeen?

“Heroes & Generals is Free2Play. We wish to create a healthy, solid and well-balanced game and community, where you can get a great experience playing the game, no matter how much money you spend! There is already an in-game economy in place, where you earn in-game credits and warfunds for being active in the game, by playing FPS-missions and/or handling Assault Teams.

You can also buy gold, which you can use to buy practically everything, usually it give you the option of buying stuff ‘early’, so you don’t need to grind that much. We also offer a Veteran Membership to accommodate wishes of having an all-inclusive package, where you earn xp, ribbon-xp, in-game credits and warfunds at an increased rate etc.

Prices are regularly being tweaked now in Open Beta/Early Access and we will most likely still tweak prices at and after launch.”

Miten yhteisö otetaan mukaan kehitysprosessiin?

“We encourage the players to participate in discussions in our forum: http://forum.heroesandgenerals.com/

When you write feedback about the game, remember to try and explain your reasons. Constructive criticism will help us build a better game for you.”

Churchill Update Brings Americans Johnson LMG

In the upcoming Churchill update (named after the British soldier Jack Churchill) we are introducing a new weapon, the Johnson LMG for the American faction.

The weapon requires 6 equipment points and is available for US Infantry & Paratroopers!

US Infantry soldiers can unlock it on the LMG Assault Ribbon at Rank 12 as the 2nd Light machine gun!
It unlocks for US Paratroopers on the Parachute Ribbon at Rank 9.

In the factory configuration it has a rate of fire of 600 rpm and a reload time of 4.3 seconds and the magazine holds 20 rounds. Upgrades are available once you unlock them by progressing on the Johnson LMG Specialist Ribbon.

How does this great new weapon look?

Historical information

The Johnson LMG was designed by a Boston lawyer, and Marine Corps Reserve, named Melvin Johnson Jr. His goal was to build a more effective weapon than the M1 Garand AND a light machine gun using as many interchangeable parts as possible. Having a side-mounted magazine it looks a lot like the German Fallschirmjägergewehr 42 and they have other similarities in the inner workings. But it seems these are pure coincidence as both weapons were designed to try and solve the same problems. The weapon was primarily used by Special Forces and the famous "Devil's Brigade" praised it for its performance in battle.

Alright, grab a seat. So you have stumbled upon Heroes and Generals. And it seems you looked into the reviews.

Good idea, you came to the reviews.
Bad idea, this game isn't worth your time or your money.

"But why?"
Alright, if you insist.

First of all, this is a WW2 themed game. It has FPS (called "Heroes") and RTS (called "Generals") sides of the game.
Sounds neat?

Both sides of the game are heavily dumbed down.
First is RTS. I will say that I love RTS games (AoE 2 anyone?), but here you won't find anything.
There is no Real-time startegy in the game. In AoE 2, you have many tactics at your disposal, like drushing, feudal age rushing, booming, springing, and other tactics you might think off with various units. In HnG, all you need is one type of unit (Moto inf) to attack and defend. I keep telling people that there is no value in it, it's just a point and click adventure, but nooo. Hell, they are better of playing some Facebook freemium games because they are the same, except those games have colour and some aesthetics in them (speaking of colour... I'll get back to that later).

Secondly, the dreaded FPS. I played more of it, because in RTS all you need is to click and drop a few times whichc doesn't take a minute (unless you have hundreds of them, it becomes a pain in the ♥♥♥♥, which is another problem in itself).
So, anyways, FPS. First person shooter part. Yeah...
"If RTS is terrible, so maybe FPS has something redeemable?"
...no. Simply no.
Firstly, the graphics.
"Graphics don't mean anything."
Yeah, I know.
"Well, what's wrong then?"
What's wrong is that Postal 2 looks better than this horsecrap. And Postal 2 is from 2004.
HnG started development in 2012, or somewhere then. If you looked at their alpha footages, then you would realize it went to the worse.
Yes, the looks, the feel, the sounds, the EVERYTHING looks terrible compared ot their early footage.
"Everything? You sure?"
Do I need to say more?
"Okay, and the gameplay?"
It's dumbed down, like everything else. All you need to is rush, rush, rush. The cap point is the size of a bathroom, where the only good capping weapon is a SMG and gunplay is spray and pray. Absolutely no tactics needed, just rush.
Don't tell me I'm wrong, I'm the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that does this. Works every single time.

I'm not even going to talk about other roles, like tanks and planes. Tanks are basically death boxes that are pointless to use, planes just rack up KD but don't really help in anything else besides being annoying, Recons are weaker infantry and Paratroopers are basically infantry that can spawn anywhere. That's all.

Other issues:
  • I mentioned colours earlier. Basically, 50 shades of grey, which is actually brown and only with the most boring parts.
  • The devs resist any suggestions from players, or it takes them more time than needed.
  • The devs also make the weirdest decisions. Like for instance, the M1919 ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1919_Browning_machine_gun ). In game, it has an annoying ladder sight that blocks a lot of the screen. People asked for that thing flipped down, because it can be done so in real life and you see miles better. Their response? It would make the gun OP. Yes, a sight, a simple sight, it's removal would make a gun OP, which wouldn't affect the gun's performance in any way. Meanwhile, MG42 performs just as much or even better and doesn't have a giant door frame on it.
  • Selective realism, in a bad way. Tanks suffer the most, because some tanks overperform while others underperform when IRL it never was like that.
  • Grind. I played Runescape, so I shouldn't be complaining about this, but at least it felt like I was progressing there, especially thanks to many ways to grind.
  • Premium has two badges. Like, yeah, I know you can buy it for free currency, but that requires you to play a lot, and seeing how crappy the gameplay is...
  • New: I forgot to mention that there is false advertisement going.
If you looked at the steam store screenshots, they are all but fake. Of course, many games do that, but these pics are way away from the reality.
Other than those pics, the devs have tags with "Influence the game's development!" all over their website, when in fact they already have everything settled. Not to mention that threads with lots of constructive posts are usually ignored or outright deleted.
  • New: I also forgot that teamwork is barely rewarded. There is xp rewards if you let others to use your boxes or let them spawn on your vehicle, or fixing the vehicle. But compared to rushing caps where you can even solo it, you get way more xp.
Might sound ok, but you realize why even squad up? You will still get the same amount of rewards if you went alone than in a squad.
Besides, the xp award that you get which I mentioned before, are only somewhat recent addition.
(If this, or any of the points. were mentioned before, correct me and I'll make corrections)

My input:
Don't get me wrong, I like this game. If I didn't I wouldn't be reviewing it.
But this game just has too many issues for me not to spread the word. The devs make it seem like they don't play their game, or are too ashamed to say that the game is crappy.
They deny/ignore any critizism that is given, and continue doing their own. Then they wonder why people write negative reviews, like this one. And they still continue to think that it's not their own faut.
It simply feels like that.

Anyways, that's all I wanted to write about.

Any definetly stupid comments will be ignored, like trying to invalidate my review because of my playtime.
Take it to the forums, I usually be at HnG forums.

Small FAQ:
Q: It's a free to play game, you can't review because of this!
A: I have full rights to review anything, just like how you have full rights to comment (I'm not going to delete unless it is surely breaking Steam Rules & Guidelines).
It's a pretty stupid counter argument nonetheless, because something that is free, or is in BETA in fact, is not excluded from reviews. It just doesn't work like that, how will the game improve without critique? I tried as much as possible to keep critique to their actions, excuse me if you find any that is directed.

Update: lately it's getting more absurd. The dev who locked the thread mentioned here before said in another thread that "they are looking for constructive feedback". Link to his post, can find it there: http://forum.heroesandgenerals.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=61080&start=20
Yet he called the thread that he locked as unconstructive, when in fact it was pretty much one of the most constructive threads going around.
Devs post on that locked thread http://forum.heroesandgenerals.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=64276&p=894655#p894655
The thread if you want to read from the start:

Am I still not clear with this? It's not worth your time, nor your money. Especially your money.
The developers just don't listen. If you try to post something constructive, it gets locked, or better, deleted.
This just can't be expressed enough - don't play, not worth it.

Update #2: Seems like they unlocked the thread and told they think it is because day/night cycle needs fastening up. I doubt it was because of that, but we will see.

Update #3: Made a foundation for a FAQ.
Oh and Churchill build... Empty build.
New guns aren't amazing, and surely were unneeded.
All changes were minor, so this build doesn't change much.

Onto D build I guess.

Update #4: Thanks to some comments, I remembered another issue. Not a big one, but still an issue.

I also want to thank people who upvoted this review. I appreciate for making it the top rated review on the store page (I honestly didn't expect it)

Still onto D build.

Early Access -arvostelu
With over 1000 hours in game I feel it's time for me to leave a review.
This game is fun and frustrating all rolled into one.
When I first started playing HnG I was proud if I even got 1 kill, it takes time if you are not a seasoned fps to get use to.
This is not a game where you join and have all the perks and upgrades at your disposal, you have to earn them and to some seems way too much of a chore to do, so be patient and give it time or you will find yourself rage quitting (I'm sure most of the negative reviews are based on the grind).
The Devs in my opinion are doing an amzing job with updates and keeping the game fun for people who enjoy a challenge and don't want everything handed to them.

Good selection of guns, weapon mods, vehicles, professions, funny moments, nice graphics, frequent updates, it's free to play, lots of maps.

The damn fog lol...For us snipers it makes it tough ;)
