Marching On

I mentioned some of this stuff in my forum comments recently but in an effort to inform all of you, here's an update on development. (This is also a cross post from

The status of the Valdis Story update is... we're waiting for a few more assets but after that we'll be done with all content. When that happens, the update will launch a Mac build and include both Vladyn and Gilda. That's right, the next update will have both characters. No year long wait for Gilda! That's not even including all the other stuff we put in there. Exciting, yes? Check the video below-

Valdis Story coming to a close also means Zack completed all tracks for the game. In fact he's just released the expansion album for sale. Have a listen over here then gently open your wallet and violently throw money at him until he can't handle it anymore. No really, there are 10 tracks on this and it's pay what you want. Send some love over to his bandcamp and have a listen to all of the new tracks.

Over 40 years ago, the goddess Valdis was killed by her daughter, the dark goddess Myrgato. Since this event Myrgato has been at war with her twin sister, Alagath the goddess of light. Aunque el juego tiene puntos fuertes, como su bonito diseño gráfico o algunos de los jefes, los errores en la jugabilidad son demasiado molestos como para equilibrar la balanza, especialmente a partir de la mitad del juego.

Destacar especialmente, entre muchos otros pequeños detalles, las decisiones en torno a los ultimos jefes, cuya dificultad reside, principalmente, en su enorme resistencia y en el uso de combos fatales cuando su energia está baja. La combinación de ambos factores desemboca en batallas que pueden perderse en unos instantes incrontrolables después de largas secuencias de tedio y monotonía. A esto hay que sumar que, en general, los controles no responden todo lo bien que el juego exige.

Como nota curiosa, otro punto negativo en su contra: el juego carece de mapa general (sólo lo ofrece por áreas). Una de las decisiones más incomprensibles que recuerdo en un videojuego.

Este juego está recomendadísimo!! muuuuuyy bueno =D!!
Si sos un amante de los Castlevania's de Playstation de los antiguos, llegaste al lugar correcto!!
El juego es muy lindo gráficamente y tiene un peso de 500mb :P.
Pero quizás te termine gustando esa similitud que tiene con Castlevania, tanto por el lado de que los mountros dropean items (y dos tipos de items, uno normal y otro con un % más raro), el mapa al más puro estilo idéntico, podés comprar items y habilidades y quizás te parezca interesante esa característica de poder usar combos a la hora de matar y/o a la hora de enfrentarte a los jefes.
Así que si tiene un poco difícultad, y más auún si te digo que hay algunos items/habilidades que son muuuuyy dificiles de conseguir y que hay una parte de la historia donde tenés que salir pitando y en el medio, si te salteas algunos items, no podrás conseguir el 100% del juego...
Además si te ponés a ver los logros, sabrás que también tendrás mucha dificultad para conseguir el 100% por ese lado.
Parte de esos logros te piden que rejuegues el juego varias veces... Y ya te digo que es largo, a menos de que hagas un SpeedRun, aunque con todo lo que tenés para explorar, la verdad es que se pierde parte de la gracia del juego...
En fin, espero que lo disfrutes, ¡¡tú eliges!! ;)!

In summary, this game is so much fun and so impressive that I can't recommend it more.

I played through this game once, and MAN did I love it. There are so many different styles of play: rush in like a barbarian, use melee attacks, take time to plan things out, use magic, attack from a distance, run away in fear, or any combination of those. The gameplay is so well made and the design so spot-on that there was never a dull moment. There's quite a lot of optional paths and bosses too. I really like how whether or not you defeat certain optional bosses determines what happens later in the game. Some of them change the story, some change the ending, and some even change how future bosses act. Plus the bosses were all unique and unbelieveably intense.
It's a really pretty game, too.

And don't even get me started on the music.
Ooooh god, the music. It's so good. I legitimately feel that this game has my favorite soundtrack of any game I've ever played. Zack Parish is now my God. I've never bought a video game soundtrack before, but I HAVE to buy this one.

I did notice that if there was more than one or two lasers on-screen at once, and during the final boss, I would experience framerate issues, but I also had a recording software running, and I'm sure everything would've been smooth if I hadn't been recording. In the end, I turned down the graphical settings for the final boss (which is a super intense experience and takes a little while to beat) and everything was fine. I have a really hard time saying that this is any fault of the game, but I wouldn't know.

As I mentioned above, I did play through this game on YouTube (, if you'd like to see some more gameplay before buying it. I really hate to self-advertise but maybe it'll give people a better idea of just how great the game is before they buy it.
Easily my favorite Let's Play of all time. Looking forward to playing through it again. And possibly again and again and again.

What do you get when you combine a responsive hack 'n slash with Metroidvania? Prepare for hours of exploring the Sunken City while using sick combos to clear challenging boss fights and frustrating puzzles. Controller is recommended.

This game was a hidden gem that I bought during one of the holiday sales last year I think. Man o man, was I surprised to find such a fun and charming game.

Taking from the Metroidvania style of layout and combat similar to that of devil may cry, this game makes out for some fun times. The music is great, the combat is great, the platforming is great...for the most part. I say the most part because there are some tedious level designs that require a lot of attempts due to nearly impossible requirements in speed and platforming. Other than that the game is amazing and easily has become one of my most fun and memorable games of all.

Given that there are two charcters, both with their own stories, the game begs for a second playthrough; which I am working on now :D

I sincerely hope the developers decide to make a sequel or another game in this same style.

Update: After finishing the game with Reina and playing throught the new content, I have to say, STUN LOCKING is a HUGE problem with this game!!!!!!!! It is frustrating an infuriating!!!! I still stand by that this is an over all great game but the two GLARING flaws in the game design are some of the platforming and definitly the stun locking that some of the enemies put you in and definitely the eye of Myrgato and the final, I have never been more frustrated with a game. I just hope the sequel, if there is one, will not fall victim to these design flaws.

I'm so torn on whether I'd recommend this game because there is so much to like. The art design and music is beautiful, the controls are great, and the environments are incredible. Unfortunately I can't recommend it because it just isn't a satisfying game. The combat system is fun but the enemies feel cheap. I'm used to hard as balls Castlevania games but I've never raged as hard as at this game.

To start, while the combos are fun to pull off it feels pointless when enemies can just disregard them if they need to. There's a handful of great boss fights but most of them feel like cheap "to do" lists. I appreciate that the bosses get harder as you weaken them, but in practice it sometimes becomes absurd. The fact that many of the bosses spawn enemies during the fight is a total cop-out in character design. Bosses are where you should be showing off and challenging the player, but the game continually throws out arbitrary tasks like wailing on a crystal, beat these minor enemies. It really detracts from the finished product.

The good news is that this game seems like it could be great with a little more fine-tuning, but for right now it's a game that has a lot of potential, but for me is unsatisfying on nearly every level.

I backed Valdis Story on Kickstarter because it looked like the kind of game I'd want to play: a side-scrolling action RPG. The truth is that it's really closer to a Metroidvania platformer with some RPG elements. Despite its short length I had it installed for a year and a half before I got around to beating it. I just wasn't that motivated to ever play it, for reasons I'll go into.

It is fundamentally a good game though. The soundtrack is amazing, the animations are smooth (though there was considerable slow down when there was a lot of stuff on the screen), and the special effects are much better than you'd expect from an indie crew with hardly any experience. The story leaves something to be desired, but it picks up later on and it's not bad, just lacking in emotion. It does make up for that in epicness and scale though.

The single biggest problem is the controls. Playing on a keyboard my hands would start cramping after just a few minutes of play. If the game were slower-paced I'd say that switching the right hand to mouse controls might be better, but it's too much of a twitch experience for that. And that's the crux of the issue: there's some very tight jumps and timings that have to be made and given that the controls can be glitchy and are just generally a pain to use, the puzzles and fights that depend on those split-second key presses should really have been a lot more forgiving.

The combat itself isn't too hard, especially if you bother to level up at all. When I could forget the pain of the controls it was genuinely fun if I wasn't in the middle of a frustrating boss fight. The game also follows the usual steps of getting easier as it progresses because you have access to more skills and spells and equipment. So the most rage-inducing moments are generally early on.

There's a crafting aspect I didn't get into, but you don't really need to. It seems sort of superfluous and confusing.

The other major issue is just finding the next objective. There is a fast travel system, but it doesn't go to nearly enough places. And when your destination is just a name that doesn't appear on a map anywhere it can take a long time to find where you're supposed to go. Some sort of objective pointer or even a global map would've helped me a ton (there is only a very small local map without any names on it). As it is, the bulk of my play time was probably spent wandering around trying to figure out where to go next.

So if you want an action platformer with RPG elements that depends on twitch skills, I'd highly recommend Valdis Story. It's the best you're going to see in that genre from an indie team. But for the sake of your hands and sanity, bring a controller instead of relying on the keyboard.

The Good:

- Metroidvania aspects just enough to cure the itch
- Equipment progression based on gameplay decisions rather than flat upgrades

The Bad:
- Poor enemy variety
- Platforming sections may not be for everyone

Love Metroidvania? Join the club. Valdis Story is currently easily my favorite of the PC Metroidvanias I've played in recent years. It features excellent, tight combat mechanics that feel somewhat like Devil May Cry thanks to the mobility and attack options from the game's spell system. The world is mostly a joy to explore and new travel skills are given at just the right pace to keep the player interested in exploring more. Furthermore, there are two characters (with two more upcoming, but in very slow development) and some impactful storyline changes that can add a lot to the replayability of the game.

One of my main complaints about the game is the lack of enemy diversity, It's not a huge issue, and the game does change it up by giving existing enemies new abilities as you level up, but one of my favorite things about Castlevania SOTN was that just about every zone had its unique monsters that each added to the atmosphere of the zone. In this game, it just feels like you're fighting those angelic monk dudes all the time except in different places. Also, the game has a number of difficult platforming sections which can be very frustrating to some players. Thankfully, not all of them are required.

I NEED MORE! Its rare nowadays to find games that have real difficulty which can be overcome with developed skill. I Wish more games would combine RPG mechanics with great skill based combo fighting systems.

This game had taken me 12hrs to complete at that was only 83% acording to the game. I found myself staying in a few area's just to kill a few certain mobs and admire the atmosphere the game provided. Really enjoyed the game.

Fantastic metroidvania/brawler style game. Definitely one of the best I've played. Combat is very rewarding, level design and art is great throughout, and bosses are very well put together. Bosses also have a rating system, and a rather forgiving retry system (it hurts your rating to restart a boss fight - but ratings have a very slight affect on the game, and it is really only their as a slight punishment - I thought this was a fantastic compromise between challenge and hand-holding).

Honestly my only critique is the games platforming sections. While controls feel great for combat - I had a harder time when trying to navigate tiny floating platforms. It feels almost as if there is a slight input delay - that lends itself well to the combo based combat, but not so to navigating an obstacle course.

This is an action-platformer in the style of new Castlevania games.

There are a few key differences, however. Unlike Castlevania, this game emphasizes quality over quantity when it comes to item drops and spells. Enemies drop crafting ingredients, not gold or items. Each character has only a handful of armors and weapons, and every one caters to a different playstyle and has multiple upgrade levels.

The gameplay is more akin to a fighting game (especially in boss battles). There is a heavy emphasis on dodging over blocking. Striking enemies at opportune moments is much more important than simply hitting them as much as possible. You do have a revive built into your abilities, but you are still fairly fragile.

This is much easier to play than a fighting game, though. Your skill cancel is a simple press of the down key, and dodging is just pressing left or right after that. Your assist has its own button, and spell casting and super mode have modifier keys. The game offers some tutorials, but muscle memory is the only real stumbling block here.

Boss battles emphasize pattern recognition and reaction time over button mashing, and since your skill cancels have a short cooldown, spamming will get you nowhere. Killing a tricky boss after spending four lives learning their patterns is a very satisfying feeling. Retries are unlimited and place you right in the boss room, but its still crucial to keep your cool and respond to attacks carefully.

There are downsides, of course. Whenever the game chooses to focus on platforming over combat, it becomes significantly less fun. Thankfully most of the timed platforming challenges are optional, though you will be missing out on a few items if you ignore them, as I chose to.

Like any non-linear game, there are times when you will be unsure where to go, or where you accidentally miss important things because the game doesn't tell you enough. This is compounded by some occasionally suspect level design, particularly areas where it's easy to fall down several rooms and be forced to repeat an area, or where enemies can stunlock or toss you easily.

The map and menus are rather bland. While it has some nice sprite work, the graphics options don't really give everything room to shine. It also doesn't scale well, so if (like me) you have a fairly large monitor and play in fullscreen, the upscaling is very noticable.

The story is nothing exciting. Like Castlevania, it's mostly relegated to text boxes whenever you find a new area or kill a boss. It has a few engaging reveals and some pleasant backstory here and there, but the story is not a reason alone to play this game.

Ultimately, this game doesn't hold your hand, but it has a reasonable difficulty curve and skill floor. It expects you to work a little bit for your victories, but it is neither impossible nor unfair. If you like action platformers and skill-based combat, look no further. Just be sure to use a controller.

I tried to play this game a year ago, but put it into my 'early access' category even though it wasn't labeled as such because it was obviously unfinished. Shortly after that a new patch came out adding the final boss (see what I mean about early access?), and there hasn't been another update in nearly a year since. Two of the four playable characters are still missing.

The game would still be enjoyable in its current state if not for some particularly rough edges. Most important among them, the game lacks immunity frames, so if you hit certain types of traps or get hit by certain attacks, you'll lose your entire life bar in a single hit (which is really a dozen hits landing all at once). Given the current state of the game I can't tell if that's a bug or by design, but it's terrible either way. Add onto that some extremely unbalanced bosses that make you feel underleveled even at max level, and the game just isn't any fun after awhile. It feels punishing in a very unfair way.

I'd say wait for an update before getting this game, but I've been waiting a year and it still feels like early access. Maybe get it on a deep discount, but full price is too much until they at least fix some of the more glaring issues.

Best indie adventure game I have ever played. The stroy was amazing, the art is fatastic. Don't even get me started on the game play. Its nice, with fluid combos. I loved the DnD feel it had to it when upgrading! It was really challenging; at one point i thought of Ninja Gaiden 2...its not that level hard all the time, just on some of the boss fights...a lot of them. The enemies level with you so to speak. When returning to an area in the begining, I was surprised when they were doing different moves and it took a little more damage to kill them.

The only real "bad" thing I hated about this was when you reach an area border, you have to re-click the direction you were going most of the time. That part was really anoying when you are jumping into a different area. I didn't have to do it all the time though which was strange, but any time I really needed to keep moving forward after a screen change (time limmet parts), it happend.

This is going into my all time favorite games for sure. I recomend this to everyone. I didn't know my life was missing something until I played this game.

Got through my first playthrough and I love this game. Gorgeous art style with great animations. Combat is very repsonsive and customizable, with lots of varieties for different situations. Talent and skill points further add to the replay value. Even at full price this is some of the best money I have spent with a game. This is a Kickstarter and Greenlight game done right. My only gripe was that the movement is geared more for combat than platforming, which made some of the platforming puzzles harder than it should have been, due to having to correct for touchy movement and falling off a ledge. All to do it again.

Excellent game, worth the money. If you are a fan of the Metroidvania genre why haven't you got this yet???
