Product Update v1.0.0.23

Update v1.0.0.23 contains some more optimization improvements, bug fixes, and a lot of new content. This update brings 2 new playable characters as well as a Mac version of the game. Some of the changes in this version are as follows.

游戏有着浓重的《恶魔城》系列的风格,画面和操作感也很相似,动作战斗部分设计非常流畅,玩家可以用招式和魔法组合来击杀敌人,通过击杀敌人获取经验,提升等级和战斗力,解锁天赋树,还可以获取装备和技能来武装自己。像《恶魔城》一样,玩家要在剧情的引导下逐步探索不同的区域,打败各个区域的boss,取得阶段性的道具和技能,以便能前往探索更多的地区,游戏的自由度也随之逐渐提高。同样游戏中有大量的隐藏和收集要素,装备、技能、升级物品、队友、隐藏boss等等,有的藏在隐蔽的房间里,也有的被障碍阻拦,需要获得破除障碍的方法才能获得。

我TM忍忍忍忍忍了好久,还是给好评吧……

话说回来这游戏真心是赞,流畅的操作,复杂的技能系统,庞多的可收集物品,背景设定画面音乐地图这种细节地方也是无可挑剔,甚至不同的通关角色(目前两个主角未来4个),每个角色也有不同的攻击路线,让你进行二周目也不为过(只是基本什么都不继承)。

但是!请非专业动作游戏玩家一定选第一个难度(普通)啊,我手贱选了第二个难度,结果游戏中被虐的体无完肤,因为这游戏有一个设定:打boss评分越高,会得到越好的奖励,比如什么属性点技能点之类的奖励。所以为了一个S我经常是跪着打完BOSS。最让我无可忍受的是,22版本真·最终BOSS,一开始我怎么都不知道如何打掉它血,好多次试验后终于会了,结果这B回血回的贼快,我最后一次一口气打了30多分钟(不是30分钟内死亡重试死亡重试而是一条命磨它血磨了30多分钟)……最终我还是没打过去而被它搞死了,这时已是深夜,于是我毫不犹豫地把游戏卸载了。

I backed Valdis Story on Kickstarter because it looked like the kind of game I'd want to play: a side-scrolling action RPG. The truth is that it's really closer to a Metroidvania platformer with some RPG elements. Despite its short length I had it installed for a year and a half before I got around to beating it. I just wasn't that motivated to ever play it, for reasons I'll go into.

It is fundamentally a good game though. The soundtrack is amazing, the animations are smooth (though there was considerable slow down when there was a lot of stuff on the screen), and the special effects are much better than you'd expect from an indie crew with hardly any experience. The story leaves something to be desired, but it picks up later on and it's not bad, just lacking in emotion. It does make up for that in epicness and scale though.

The single biggest problem is the controls. Playing on a keyboard my hands would start cramping after just a few minutes of play. If the game were slower-paced I'd say that switching the right hand to mouse controls might be better, but it's too much of a twitch experience for that. And that's the crux of the issue: there's some very tight jumps and timings that have to be made and given that the controls can be glitchy and are just generally a pain to use, the puzzles and fights that depend on those split-second key presses should really have been a lot more forgiving.

The combat itself isn't too hard, especially if you bother to level up at all. When I could forget the pain of the controls it was genuinely fun if I wasn't in the middle of a frustrating boss fight. The game also follows the usual steps of getting easier as it progresses because you have access to more skills and spells and equipment. So the most rage-inducing moments are generally early on.

There's a crafting aspect I didn't get into, but you don't really need to. It seems sort of superfluous and confusing.

The other major issue is just finding the next objective. There is a fast travel system, but it doesn't go to nearly enough places. And when your destination is just a name that doesn't appear on a map anywhere it can take a long time to find where you're supposed to go. Some sort of objective pointer or even a global map would've helped me a ton (there is only a very small local map without any names on it). As it is, the bulk of my play time was probably spent wandering around trying to figure out where to go next.

So if you want an action platformer with RPG elements that depends on twitch skills, I'd highly recommend Valdis Story. It's the best you're going to see in that genre from an indie team. But for the sake of your hands and sanity, bring a controller instead of relying on the keyboard.

I wasn't ready for this.

I didn't know what to expect when I installed the game but I definitely wasn't ready for this. But for me, this is like 2D Dark Souls - it pushes you in terms of difficulty, there are no quest log kinda stuff so you have to travel around and explore, parry system etc...

There are two main problems for me though:

1- Controls are not as fluid as it should be considering this game requires good reflexes.

2- There aren't a lot of enemies so far (and my friend told me that it doesn't get any better)

If you like Castlevania buy this. If you don't but like 2D fighting games, buy this. If you are a CoD kinda gamer who likes linear storytelling, kinda easy gameplay and first person viewpoint, I'm sorry but the princess is at another castle.

I NEED MORE! Its rare nowadays to find games that have real difficulty which can be overcome with developed skill. I Wish more games would combine RPG mechanics with great skill based combo fighting systems.

I'm so torn on whether I'd recommend this game because there is so much to like. The art design and music is beautiful, the controls are great, and the environments are incredible. Unfortunately I can't recommend it because it just isn't a satisfying game. The combat system is fun but the enemies feel cheap. I'm used to hard as balls Castlevania games but I've never raged as hard as at this game.

To start, while the combos are fun to pull off it feels pointless when enemies can just disregard them if they need to. There's a handful of great boss fights but most of them feel like cheap "to do" lists. I appreciate that the bosses get harder as you weaken them, but in practice it sometimes becomes absurd. The fact that many of the bosses spawn enemies during the fight is a total cop-out in character design. Bosses are where you should be showing off and challenging the player, but the game continually throws out arbitrary tasks like wailing on a crystal, beat these minor enemies. It really detracts from the finished product.

The good news is that this game seems like it could be great with a little more fine-tuning, but for right now it's a game that has a lot of potential, but for me is unsatisfying on nearly every level.

Valdis Story: Abyssal City is a RPG, side-scrolling platformer game and I can tell you know, It's definately one of the best ones I have played!

At the beginning of the game you have a choice between 2 unique characters (building up to 4 once you have completed the story mode) which you can play to progress through the story. They each have their own different skills and attacks that they use.

The game uses a simple spell casting system where you just hold a button and press a certain direction and it casts the spell you have binded onto it. Aside from the spells, the game enables you to use dashes, varying comboes between weak and strong attacks, wall jumps and more!

Each character has their own unique skill tree that you can use to enhance the characters performance. eg, Increase attack damage by 5%. It follows the basic RPG skill tree (Attack, Defense, Magic).

The boss fights in this game are my favourite out of all the platformers and RPGs. Each boss you encounter have different attacks and each have their own special moves. Not only are they challenging, they are also EXTREMELY fun to fight! You won't simply beat a boss with just luck! They also look really cool :3

The game's graphics and music are just straight up AMAZING! The anime-like art style really does pull a lot of audience in, and I am not suprised. The devs really know what people like!

Overall, I would give this game a 9.5/10 for all of the reasons I have mentioned above. The only thing I find that this game is lacking the Quest log or Objective menu. When you speak to an NPC and you take a quest, at some points I found it frustrating because I could not find the desired place I needed to go, simply because I had no clue where it was. That being said, I am sure the devs will add this in the future since they seem to be updating the game very often.

I played this for about 25 hours on my son's computer (i wanted to try to beat the game, but i didnt)
One of the most well thought out, and well put together "metroidvania" games on PC i've ever played. The devs are dedicated to their project, and you can fell the passion they put into the game. I highly recommend!

Very fluent combat. The more times you play through it, the more rewarding it becomes. I highly recomend to play on God Slayer difficulty. Just get this game, honestly.

Valdis Story: Abyssal City is a good example of drawing quality out of a game through a well-oiled grounded combat system. Fighting in it rewards learning enemy patterns and conscious battling and its skill tree system doesn't hold your hand on what to get but satisfies those who like to create builds. While length might feel a little short, two playable characters with different skills and weapons (with two more on the way) help hold you for your dollar's worth. Art style is great and leaves character easily recognizable though the story comes across as a tad cliche with its angels and demons angle. At times, the dialogue and backstory veers into teenagers-RPing-on-GaiaOnline levels of corniness but it ultimately doesn't choke you with it.

To sum it up, Valdis Story is definitely worth the fifteen dollars and while it might have needed a bit of reining in on the creators' parts with dialogue and story, it's really a labor of love, shown in its well built combat system, an essential in this type of genre.

Pros:
- Reasonably challenging
- Fantasic design
- Hack 'n' Slash mech smooth
- Fun little platforming challenges
- Diverse Character playstyles
- Soundtrack is Great

Cons:
- No Quest Log
- Only 2 Characters ( 2 more to be added )

This game had taken me 12hrs to complete at that was only 83% acording to the game. I found myself staying in a few area's just to kill a few certain mobs and admire the atmosphere the game provided. Really enjoyed the game.

- Metroidvania aspects just enough to cure the itch
- Equipment progression based on gameplay decisions rather than flat upgrades

- Poor enemy variety
- Platforming sections may not be for everyone

Love Metroidvania? Join the club. Valdis Story is currently easily my favorite of the PC Metroidvanias I've played in recent years. It features excellent, tight combat mechanics that feel somewhat like Devil May Cry thanks to the mobility and attack options from the game's spell system. The world is mostly a joy to explore and new travel skills are given at just the right pace to keep the player interested in exploring more. Furthermore, there are two characters (with two more upcoming, but in very slow development) and some impactful storyline changes that can add a lot to the replayability of the game.

One of my main complaints about the game is the lack of enemy diversity, It's not a huge issue, and the game does change it up by giving existing enemies new abilities as you level up, but one of my favorite things about Castlevania SOTN was that just about every zone had its unique monsters that each added to the atmosphere of the zone. In this game, it just feels like you're fighting those angelic monk dudes all the time except in different places. Also, the game has a number of difficult platforming sections which can be very frustrating to some players. Thankfully, not all of them are required.

This is an action-platformer in the style of new Castlevania games.

There are a few key differences, however. Unlike Castlevania, this game emphasizes quality over quantity when it comes to item drops and spells. Enemies drop crafting ingredients, not gold or items. Each character has only a handful of armors and weapons, and every one caters to a different playstyle and has multiple upgrade levels.

The gameplay is more akin to a fighting game (especially in boss battles). There is a heavy emphasis on dodging over blocking. Striking enemies at opportune moments is much more important than simply hitting them as much as possible. You do have a revive built into your abilities, but you are still fairly fragile.

This is much easier to play than a fighting game, though. Your skill cancel is a simple press of the down key, and dodging is just pressing left or right after that. Your assist has its own button, and spell casting and super mode have modifier keys. The game offers some tutorials, but muscle memory is the only real stumbling block here.

Boss battles emphasize pattern recognition and reaction time over button mashing, and since your skill cancels have a short cooldown, spamming will get you nowhere. Killing a tricky boss after spending four lives learning their patterns is a very satisfying feeling. Retries are unlimited and place you right in the boss room, but its still crucial to keep your cool and respond to attacks carefully.

There are downsides, of course. Whenever the game chooses to focus on platforming over combat, it becomes significantly less fun. Thankfully most of the timed platforming challenges are optional, though you will be missing out on a few items if you ignore them, as I chose to.

Like any non-linear game, there are times when you will be unsure where to go, or where you accidentally miss important things because the game doesn't tell you enough. This is compounded by some occasionally suspect level design, particularly areas where it's easy to fall down several rooms and be forced to repeat an area, or where enemies can stunlock or toss you easily.

The map and menus are rather bland. While it has some nice sprite work, the graphics options don't really give everything room to shine. It also doesn't scale well, so if (like me) you have a fairly large monitor and play in fullscreen, the upscaling is very noticable.

The story is nothing exciting. Like Castlevania, it's mostly relegated to text boxes whenever you find a new area or kill a boss. It has a few engaging reveals and some pleasant backstory here and there, but the story is not a reason alone to play this game.

Ultimately, this game doesn't hold your hand, but it has a reasonable difficulty curve and skill floor. It expects you to work a little bit for your victories, but it is neither impossible nor unfair. If you like action platformers and skill-based combat, look no further. Just be sure to use a controller.

This game is definitely worth more than the asking price. It is a Metroidvania, but with one difference - combat is freakin' sweet and there is legitimate choice offered as to how you want to build your character. Recommended for any fan of the genre.

Easily one of the best Metroidvania games I have ever played. The majority of the negative comments I see about this game call it rough or unpolished, and I totally disagree. The controls are very precise, and the game requires you to use that precision to complete many of its puzzles and bossfights with almost pixel perfect accuracy. Once you complete a perfect jumping segment or perfect a boss you will understand what makes this game so awesome
