Update 01.062 - Super-large worlds, Procedural asteroids and Exploration

This is the last update for this year so we decided to make it more special. It includes three very important new features: super-large worlds, procedural asteroids and exploration! With super-large worlds we have increased the size of the world to 1,000,000,000 km in diameter; this means that practically there are no boundaries and you can travel as far as you want without experiencing shaky movements and rotations. The “procedural asteroids” feature adds an infinite number of asteroids to the game world - all these asteroids are fully destructible and don’t consume RAM/memory. The exploration feature adds a practically infinite number of ships and stations to the game world, so there will always be something to discover, explore, acquire and conquer. For more details about the new features, please read Marek's blog post: http://blog.marekrosa.org/2014/12/space-engineers-super-large-worlds_17.html

Om detta spel

Space Engineers is a sandbox game about engineering, construction and maintenance of space works. Players build space ships and space stations of various sizes and utilization (civil and military), pilot ships and perform asteroid mining.

Space Engineers utilizes a realistic volumetric-based physics engine: all objects can be assembled, disassembled, damaged and destroyed. The game comes with two game modes: creative and survival.

Volumetric objects are structures composed from block-like modules interlocked in a grid. Volumetric objects behave like real physical objects with mass, inertia and velocity. Individual modules have real volume and storage capacity.

Space Engineers is inspired by reality and by how things work. Think about modern-day NASA technology extrapolated 60 years into the future. Space Engineers strives to follow the laws of physics and doesn't use technologies that wouldn't be feasible in the near future.

Space Engineers concentrates on construction aspects, but can be played as a tactical shooter as well. We expect players to avoid engaging in direct man-to-man combat and instead use their creativity and engineering skills to build war machines and fortifications. Space Engineers shouldn’t be about troops; it should be about the machinery you build.

Early Access

  • Game modes
    - Creative – unlimited resources, instant building, no death
    - Survival – realistic management of resources and inventory capacity; manual building; death and respawn
  • Single-player – you are the sole space engineer
  • Multiplayer - alpha version (not a final version)
    - Creative and survival mode with your friends
    - Cooperative and competitive
    - Privacy customization: offline, private, friends only, public
    - Max 16 players (this may increase in the future)
    - Weapons on/off
    - Copy-paste on/off
  • Scenarios
    - Easy Start 1 – start on an asteroid platform with one large ship and two small ships
    - Easy Start 2 – start in a green asteroid station with several large and small ships (this is a large scene!)
    - Lone Survivor – start on an abandoned asteroid platform with no ships
    - Crashed Red Ship – your mother ship just crashed...
    - Two Platforms – competitive two-team multi-player world
    - Asteroids – start in a rescue ship with very limited resources
    - Empty World – no asteroids, no ships; suitable for creative mode
  • Dedicated servers - allow players to connect to a third party host, rather than using a player-host, in a peer-to-peer set-up. The result is a faster connection and a more fluent multiplayer performance with less lag
  • Ships (small and large ships – build them, pilot them and crush them
  • Space stations
  • First-person & Third-person
  • Super-large worlds – the size of the world to 1,000,000,000 km in diameter (almost infinite)
  • Procedural asteroids - adds an infinite number of asteroids to the game world

  • Localized interface (WIP) - Czech, Danish, Dutch, German, Icelandic, Polish, Spanish-Spain, Spanish-Latin America, Finnish, French, Hungarian, Italian, Portuguese-Brazil, Estonian, Norwegian, Swedish, Slovak, Ukrainian, Russian
  • Custom colors for blocks – Customize your creations by using any color you like
  • Cargo ships - auto-piloted vessels (miners, freighters and military) that carry ore, ingots, constructions components and other materials from sector to sector. They can be looted but beware, they often contain booby traps!
  • Environmental hazards – protect your character and your creations from meteor storms (Safe, Normal, Cataclysm, Armageddon)
  • Conveyor, Collector, Connector (IMPORTANT: this is a first work-in-progress version and a realistic version will be added later) - Conveyors move items from inventory to inventory. Collectors can collect small objects (ore, ingots, components, tools) into inventory. Connectors can throw items from inventory to space (in future update could be used to connect two ships/stations and transfer items)
  • Artificial mass – can be used to add gravity-affected mass to ships, useful in machine ships or cars
  • Wheels - use them with rotors and artificial mass to build vehicles
  • Automated turrets – gatling, missile and interior. Turrets are used mostly as defense mechanism rather than shooting other players. They aim on decoys (automatically by default), meteorites, missiles or all moving objects (eg. small/large ships) - targeting can be changed in the control panel
  • Large weapons - missile launcher (for large ships)
  • Large and small ship grinder and welder – assemble and disassemble blocks faster and in larger amount
  • Batteries - enables players to store the energy generated by solar panels or reactors at an efficiency rate of 80%
  • Pistons - offers the option to build more advanced machinery
  • Factions - create and join factions, determine ownership of blocks and manage the relations between them (hostile/ally). NOTE: Factions are currently Work-in-Progress. There are still many things to be added (eg. chat and communication) and some bugs/issues are yet to be fixed.
  • Remote ship control – control ships without being inside the ship’s cockpit (drones)
  • Remote turret control - control turrets directly
  • 3D printing - export (CTRL+E) and 3D print the creations that you design in the game (http://www.SpaceEngineersGame.com/3d-printing.html)
  • Modding API - brings a lot of new possibilities to modders and allows them to alter the game by writing C# scripts which have access to in-game objects (WIP - more features will be added in the future)
  • Blueprints - save your ship or station on a blueprint and paste it into your game
  • Projector block – project blueprints and weld the projection
  • Sound block - reproduce predefined sounds such as alarm or siren for announcements

As you can see, I'm only 6 hours into this game, but I've watched hours of others playing, tutorials, and guides in order to get a better hang of things. Even though it's early access, this feels like a whole title. Even if the developers were to drop it completely (which they show zero signs of doing), it would still be worth $20. Some quick pro/cons:
PRO:
+Massive creative potential.
+Good modding community.
+Strong multiplayer.
+Active and player-friendly developers.

CON:
-Difficult UI. I had to look up tutorials on YouTube to get a decent idea of how to do things (Thanks, Gas Bandit!).
-Little guidance, expects you to tough out the rookie mistakes and learn
-Brutal PvP online. Do NOT go online without playing single player first and getting the hang of things.

I love this game. It's tough on your computer, though. It runs on my laptop, but barely. Definitely stick with smaller ships and maps unless you have a monster gaming PC. With a little help regarding the UI, some optimization to improve performance, and just more of what the devs have been doing, by the time this hits 1.0 it will be one of the best games of it's kind.

TL;DR- This game is good, doesn't feel like early access. Make sure to check the min/rec'd specs, as it's pretty demanding of your PC. Watch tutorials online (check out Gas Bandit on YouTube) to not be a noob floundering and dying for 3 hours straight.

EDIT: My laptop has 4 GB of RAM, i3 M370 2.4 GHz (I think. Computer stuff isn't my thing). I stay on small world settings, very few asteroids, basically bottom end graphics. If you can run Skyrim, Civ 5, Kerbal Space Program, then you can run this. Maybe not at full power, but it works, and its pretty dang fun.

If you're not thinking about getting this game. Get this game.
If you have 48 hours left to live, spend them playing this game.
If you have a girlfriend/boyfriend. Dump them and get this game.
If you have to take the MCAT in 5 weeks like I do. Too bad, get this game.

I have spent a considerable amount of time playing this game and I cannot seem to stop. At first it just feels like minecraft in space, and while this may be the easiest way to describe this game, it certainly does not do it justice. I got tired of minecraft after about 20 hours of gameplay but I have over 250 hours on this game and it has definately saved me money as I've had no desire to purchase any other games as of yet. Definately recommend buying this game.

I usually dislike early access games. I usually take a fat pinch of salt when I see new 'build your own' style game comes come onto Steam too. Not in this case. Space Engineers has quickly earned a spot in my all time favorite PC games for its dynamic and engaging construction system and it's got one of the coolest looking destruction systems I've ever seen in a game like this. The devs have been keeping up with weekly updates since its launch and they're very involved with the community. As a matter of fact, player made content will be appearing as randomly spawned ships in the upcoming exploration patch.

The construction system is very simple, even familiar for most people I'm sure. It's like Minecraft, in that you're building pretty much everything out of blocks, but that's where the similarities end. Ships are made by sticking a power plant, cockpit, a couple gyroscopes and thrusters (In every direction by the way! Space has no gravity or atmosphere so your ship needs forward thrusters to slow down, etc), maybe a few weapon systems. Then you have to hook up conveyor pipes to most of those things to power them with resources and components you get from mining asteroids. Ships can be as big or as small as you like, the only real limit is how much your PC can handle. Everything from little scout fighters, mining ships, frigates, fighter carriers and even humongous titan-sized battleships can be built. Yes, you could even build your own Death Star, but you might have to wait a little while for a working Superlaser. Or you could just mod your own Superlaser into the game, because Space Engineers has a modding API and a fully fledged Steam Workshop page that's already crammed with all sorts of player created content.
There's also an integrated blueprints system (And a corresponding hologram projector for constructing saved blueprints from scratch) so you can save ships and carry them over to other servers/maps, or if the first ship you had gets destroyed and you want a replacement, you can just ctrl-v it into the game after selecting it from the blueprints menu. Very very handy.

Ships and stations crumple, tear and otherwise deform when they take damage, whether you're hosing them down with lead, setting off explosions or just smashing into eachother for fun. You can see the damage your ship takes over time as holes, scratches, dents and warping are modelled into most blocks. Even portions of your ship can be sheared off and cause extra damage as they free float in space, getting knocked around and causing even more havoc as they get caught on your ship and tear it apart from the inside if you're not careful. The same rules apply to your enemy too though. It's very exciting and sometimes anxiety-inducing, the way combat works.

There are two gameplay modes currently, survival and creative. Survival mode lets you build everything from scratch and assemble it together using the various ingame tools you're provided with. Everything needs to be constructed piece by piece and you're limited by how many resources you have and what kind of tools you have available. You can mount bigger and better drills, welders and grinders onto your ships after you acquire enough supplies.
Creative mode is exactly what it sounds like; you have free reign to do whatever you like in the galaxy and everything is constructed instantly the second you place it down.

A pretty solid multiplayer mode with player-created factions and servers was patched in a while ago. It even supports mods. I haven't spent a lot of time online aside from on my own private server I play with one or two friends on but there's practically no change between offline and online gameplay aside from some occasional connectivity and performance issues.
The multiplayer still needs quite a bit of polishing, as does the overall performance of the game, but so far it's come together very very nicely and I expect I'll put another fifty hours or so into the game before it's released.

If you're into Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Warhammer 40k or any other scifi genre, buy this game. You'll thank me later.

Man, this is a great Sandbox. Yes, I know, many computers won't stand huge space battles, but it's worth the try. I bought this game one day ago and I spent the whole day playing it, watching youtube videos, learning everything I can do. I'm really impressed. If the developers stoped making this game today, it still would be worth the money I paid for the early access.

My girlfriend bought me this because she's a ♥♥♥♥ing babe,
So I started this game up, you guys kindly offered to show me a tutorial. Instantly I heard professor oak's voice echo in my mind:

"There's no time or place for that, you're a man, don't be a ♥♥♥♥♥"

I started a new world, looked around at some ships, the "fighter" caught my eye, I built myself a staircase to get in because I didn't know how to use my jetpack. I had no idea how to fire, I saw that my ship was blue and there was a large red ship.
Clearly the enemy, I accelerated with all my force and exploded on impact without even denting the large ship.

Again, ♥♥♥♥ tutorials, I had no idea how to use my jetpack, I floated off into space, never to be seen again by the friends I don't have because I play video games. 420/10

This is one of the 3 or so games that I can safely say I will NEVER run out of things to do in. The other two being Minecraft and Gmod. I've been with this game pretty much since launch, and I've watched it progress from a semi-broken space physics simulator to this absolute masterpiece of sandbox and community. I remember when Workshop integration was added, within days there were tens of THOUSANDS of worlds on the workshop. And when official modding was introduced, the community (and myself) went absolutely CRAZY! Modding opened up whole new worlds (sometimes literally) for this game. Also, I find myself enjoying the multiplayer a LOT more (screw you rammers, though) simply because of the numerous fixes and improvements they've made to it. Even now, this is one of the few games I would've payed the usual 50-60$ for, but it's a steal at only 20$. And the devs! Keen Software House have to some of the most dedicated game developers I've ever seen, releasing content-filled updates EVERY THURSDAY since launch, never missing one. I heard recently that this game is also going to be in retail stores and for download on the Xbox One. Now, if you can get your game on that big of a platform, you're doing something right.
I really can't wait to see where the future takes this game and KSH.
So, overall, 12/10

An awesome space survivor in a cold construction environment and a workshop full of mods.
Creative mode is great, connecting to friends is an easy way to slam warships at eachother for hours at a time. Though my Mid-tier machine struggles with too many conveyor systems over network.
The devs are keeping themselves busy bringing out consecutive updates and features weekly so thers still a lot to look forward to.

First off, I'd like to start out by saying that after I originally wasted nearly 26 bucks on minecraft (DO NOT BUY THAT GAME), I bought this game for just under 20 (should have bought when half off) and I got to say that "awesome" is the grandest of all understatement on a way to describe this game. This game doesn't come without its early game problems though, which i have serveral ideas.

1. You can't build road vehicles (disregard, it has been pointed out to me that artificial mass gives gravity to road vehicles)
Though you have wheels and suspension, you can't really build a small vehicles because they end up floating away, not that you need small road vehicles considering the concept of the game, but the wheels should be pulled down by gravity like the player is, otherwise, like i said before, it'll float away, i'm not sure why wheels exist in this game as of now, but adding gravity affect to wheels, and steering assemblies wouldn't hurt, it would really be as much usefull as much as it would be novelty, unless you have a REALLY large ship, which is what i'm working on, there will be a core of the ship because you'll need a vehicle to get to and from really fast.

2. Server lag.
I feel that the multiplayer servers and the way everything is handled when sharing maps could be done more efficiently, so much lag and is very network intensive, i work with networking and computers and the way everything network in this game is being handled, is not doing so very efficiently, i'd have people join my maps, complain about the extreme lag, and leave, like clockwork.

3. Some of the cubes are limited.
For example, on large ships you can only place large cubes, and for small ships, you can only place small cubes. When you are configuring your toolbar, there is a category for large cubes, and a category for small cubes, they aren't really large or small, the size of your cube is completely dependent on the type of ship you're building, so the "small cube" "large cube" categories are somewhat confusing, i think it could have been thought out a little better. Another note on the cubes are the passage way cubes, i forget exactly what they're called, but there are only strait peices, no T or L or + peices, so you kind of have to figure a sollution to make that cube work.

There are a few little things that bug me, but not enough to state them here, and yes, i am aware it is still an early access game, the 3 ones that i posted above were problems to me that i felt needed to be pointed out, overall, the game is super awesome and i would recommend this game 3 times over plus another time, definitely the best $20 i've ever spent thus far. Another thing i'd like to note is that it's also not as processor intensive i though it would be, as of now (12-11-2014), i have a pentium G630 on an asus p8h77-v and 3.5gigs of ram (32 bit OS) and a geforce 9800gt. The graphics card does become quite the convection oven though during gameplay it goes up to around 210 - 220 farhenheit, and that fan gets LOUD, if i didn't have the cooling i did, it would probably already be dead, it's minorly concerning, i have a second 9800gt that i might put into an sli but with only a 430psu, it would concern me.
