Verdun Anniversary!

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=674435385

Exactly one year ago, we released WW1 FPS Verdun! A great milestone, that we couldn't pass without a small mentioning.

Especially as the developments around Verdun didn't stop there and than. This past year we continued working on several updates and performance improvements.

We hope you are satisfied with what we have done, and that we will see more of you in the trenches upcoming year!

Recensioni

“Generously stuffed with player-made emergent moments on the battlefield and an incredible sense of place, Verdun is not just a great take on one of history’s more marginalised wars, it also happens to be a resoundingly solid shooter in its own right too.”
9.0 – Gamewatchers - John-Paul Jones

“I became immersed in its careful pacing and focus on squad movement.”
Gamespot - Cameron Woolsey

“Verdun's given me an excellent understanding of what a mess World War I was. Verdun's Frontlines mode really is sort of ingenious—and I think this is definitely one worth checking out, especially if you're already interested in the subject matter.”
PCWorld - Hayden Dingman

Informazioni sul gioco

Verdun is the first multiplayer FPS set in a realistic World War One setting. The merciless trench warfare offers a unique battlefield experience, immersing you and your squad into intense battles of attack and defense.
The game takes place on the western front between 1914 and 1918, in one of the bloodiest conflicts in world history. The developers were inspired by the infamous Battle of Verdun France in 1916. The game offers 4 distinct game-modes; Frontlines, Attrition, Rifle Deathmatch and Squad Defense. Also many historically accurate features are included such as realistic WW1 weaponry, authentic uniforms, gore and maps based on the real battlefields of France and Belgium.

The Frontlines game mode is unique in its tactical complexity. The realistic trenches are challenging to fight in and require tactical cunning to capture and defend. The Entente and Central Powers strive to gain control of frontline sectors. One battle you’re rushing the enemy trenches during an offensive battle in order to gain ground. In another battle you might be defending your recently conquered ground against an enemy counter-attack.

Players can choose to be part of one of the many squad-types in the game, each of whom have their own distinct tactical role. By working together with your friends, you can earn experience that improves the power and versatility of your squad. As you gain more experience fighting and get promoted in rank, you also earn Career Points which you can use to unlock specializations, weapons and equipment.

In the Attrition game mode, the Entente and the Central Powers are pitted against each other in a single battle. Each side has a number of tickets which represents the amount of manpower they have. When a player is killed and respawns, a ticket is deducted from the side who the player belonged to. When a side has no more tickets, players of that side cannot respawn.

The Rifle Deathmatch is a free-for-all game mode, where all players are pitted against each other in a thrilling contest of skill using only bolt-action rifles.

In the Squad Defense mode, the player with his squad-mates will have to defend a position as long as they can against endless waves of AI controlled attackers.

Verdun key features include:
Realistic World War 1 gameplay: Authentic weaponry with realistic bullet physics, skill based weapon handling, gore, poisonous gas with a claustrophobic gas mask experience, gore and artillery barrages
Tactical squad-based FPS: Unique squad leveling system, distinct squad types and roles, voice chat
True trench warfare: Real-time dynamic frontline with momentum-based attack and counter-attack gameplay
Authentic World War 1 setting: Typical WW1 music and style, historical battlefields set on the Western Front
Challenging game modes: Team-based Frontline, tactical Attrition, skill-based Rifle Deathmatch and desperate survival in Squad Defense

The gameplay is as immersive and gritty as it can get with elements such as realistic gore that portrays the true horror of the 1st World War Battlefield. This feature can naturally be disable if preferred. The authentic weapons need to be handled with skill, as they each feel differently and there are no floating crosshairs to aid your aim. Also, the realistic bullet physics require you to lead your shots when firing on a moving target at long range. In the event of a gas attack, you need to put on your gas mask, which impairs your view and gives you a very claustrophobic experience. And if getting shot or gassed isn’t enough, sudden artillery barrages that are called in by NCO’s can pin you down if you’re caught in the open and might obliterate your entire squad. This unforgiving war isn’t for the faint hearted!

Team play is what lies at the heart of Verdun. When you start a game, your first choice is to fight for either the Entente or the Central Powers. You can form one of the different squad types available to that side with up to three of your friends. Each squad has a specific tactic that is based on the historical units of that time. Depending on your squad’s type, players can choose a specific role within the squad, complete with historically accurate attire, weapons and special abilities. The more Co-op experience you and your squad mates earn together, the more powerful your squad will become and the better abilities will be unlocked. This progression is also shown visually as you and your squad get more advanced uniforms. You will also earn Career Points, which can be spent to unlock specializations, weapons and equipment.

The true WW1 battlefield experience has been captured in a real-time dynamic frontline, set in historically accurate locations of the Western Front. These frontline maps are comprised out of multiple sectors that can be captured by either side. Staying true to the typical attrition warfare of that time, both sides attack and counter-attack each other in turn, compelling you to defend each captured sector of trenches!

The development team has done extensive field research at Verdun and has been advised by knowledgeable historians to make sure Verdun is as historically accurate as it can get. Uniforms have been recreated to the tiniest details, the weapons are modeled to exact references and the maps use realistic World War 1 props and terrain layouts. Also, everything in the game has been tailored to recreate the grim atmosphere that is so typical of WW1; Gloomy clouded skies, an immersive interface combined with realistic sounds, accurate native voices that evoke the feeling of actually being there in the trenches, mud covered - trenches whilst peering over your rifle to spot the enemy.

Played/Playing: DOD 1.3, DOD:S, CS 1.6, CS:S, BFBC1, BFBC2, Squad. And I am a guy who hast at least 2:1 (Bad Company 1 and2) or 3:1 (CS, DOD) K/D ratio, so always above average.

Tried Verdun and it is just S H I T. You NEVER can see the enemy, well, sure, if you put your eyes 5 cm in front of your screen and put the resolution to 800x640 on a 1980px screen and of course, if you camp hard. This game will be infested with wallhack noob kids.

Yeah, I know, it is called realism, but it everything except the "can't see ♥♥♥♥" isn't realism. If you want realism play Squad or Arma.

Forget to get the refund. I might play it again if I am heavily drunk and like to insult people.

Interesting, compelling FPS set in WW1. The single FPS set in this era until the new Dice game is released. I just have a single con regarding this game, and that's the choice of the engine. The unity engine isnt suited for an FPS, they should consider switching to unreal or another engine in the sequel.

Wanted to review this game as Battlefield 1 seems to claim it's doing something that 'has never been done before'.
I can tell you now a few things that verdun did first and probably did better than the future battlefield title:
- unique cooperative squad play
- Enormous variety of realistic handeling weapons
- immersive gas attacks
- no romanticised ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t or modern fps tropes like hipfiring an mg08
- i like the idea of the pve mode albeit its not very challenging
when they add tanks and or other vehicles and improve the performance it could hold up fine.

Verdun is an amazing FPS shooter with beautiful graphics that goes back to warfare as it used to be and focuses on cooperative squad play.

Verdun takes you away from what you seem to find in modern shooters and puts you back in good old trench warfare where you must rely on your squad-mates and teamwork to survive. Rather than gathering kill streaks for care packages and loading yourself up with perks you'll simply pick a position in a squad, adjust your loadout accordingly and you're thrown right into the trenches. Instead of an every-man-for-himself approach to things Verdun keeps the focus on teamwork and it achieves this by appointing an NCO (essentially a captain) to every squad who can issue orders throughout the game.

The main gamemode of Verdun (and my personal favourite) is Frontlines where you'll find yourself and your squaddies playing tug-o-war for a long stretch of land, periodically pushing and attacking or retreating and defending. You'll find yourself dug into your trenches when you start and your first objective will either be repelling the enemies attack or attacking their trenches yourself. The attacking team will have strategic points along the enemy trenches which they must assault (the other team will be defending these points during this time). Your job as the attacker is to clear out the enemy trench claiming the land for yourself and once you do your enemies will be forced to retreat to a trench further back and hold that ground instead. On the other hand if the defenders succeed at repelling the attack they will keep hold of their land and immediately be able to launch an assault on the opposing team. This will continue back and forth until one team has taken all the land from the opponents and captured their HQ or until the time runs out in which case the win goes to the team holding the most land.
Instead of rushing forward you'll have to plan your attack carefully, following any helpful commands your NCO may issue you along the way. Frontlines (like the rest of Verdun) rewards you for taking your time and scouting out your enemies and if you try to take a kamikaze approach to things you'll likely find yourself dying quickly and repeatedly. This is a major advantage to the game over many other FPSs as you'll find yourself learning to play properly and focus rather than hoping that a huge amount of luck will be on your side.

There are other game modes besides Frontlines and these include: Attrition which is a team deathmatch style mode where you each have tickets which are lost upon someone dying. Once a teams tickets have been depleted the opposing team wins. Rifle Deathmatch is a free-for-all upon which you choose your weapons when you enter the game and can level those up by killing other players unlocking things such as bayonet attachments. The player with the most kills at the end is victorious. The last game mode is Squad Defense where you play single player in a squad and must defend against waves of oncoming AI enemies until you are eventually wiped out. Each game mode has it own allure but Frontlines is the most popular and you'll find the majority of players spend their time in that mode though you'll not have trouble finding games in the other modes.

Squads are one of the main features of Verdun and there are 12 of these to choose from (if I'm correct). Squads have different perks and abilities which are unique to that squad and the same goes with the 'classes' you'll find within each one. Each squad is made up of four different 'classes' some of which include the Oberjäger or Guide, Scharfschütze or Tireur d'élite, Überwacher or Observateur and the Aufklärer or Éclaireur and each of these squads and classes have their own load-outs and play-styles. For example the Scharfschütze is a marksman class and prefers lots of distance between him and his unlucky targets, whereas the Aufklärer excels at melee and needs things to be up close and personal. Choosing which squad and class you play will greatly affect how your outcome so it'd recommend giving each squad/class a try until you find what is right for you because they truly all do play very different. Each squad will also have an NCO who will appoint attack and defend orders for the rest of the squad to carry out. Attacking/Defending these targets and/or remaining within your NCO's command range will award you with extra points and will help your squad level up unlocking various different things for you such as perks and even some additional classes. Although the desire to do your own thing can be strong the gameplay really is geared towards teamwork and you'll find very few situations where going solo reaps a better outcome than going as a group but the choice is still yours and you are not forced to follow orders.

I think one of the graphics of Verdun are amazing and I find myself admiring them every time I play. The attention to detail and sparce placement of objects adds to the immersiveness in-game and together with the artillery bombing and rifles sounds going off creates a perfect war atmosphere.
Also the in-game community seems to be refreshingly nice which is a rarity in most first person shooters I've played so that was welcome. Rather than abuse there seemed to be a lot of friendly interaction between people and players were willing to help when a question was asked.

My only issue with Verdun is the fact it can be very difficult at first and some may find that offputting. It took me a good few games until I really felt comfortable and at first it was frustrating feeling like I couldn't move without being killed. This quickly changes though if you're willing to take a game or two of hardcore defeat and soon you'll find yourself playing as well as you would in any other FPS.

I can see why Verdun came highly recommended to me as it is a stand out game in the FPS genre. The gameplay, though challenging, is very rewarding and actually feels like a war game in terms of realism. Anyone looking for a realistic trench warfare experience with solid gameplay need look no further as this more than hits the spot. A must try for HARDCORE fans of the genre and those looking for a true challenge, immersive graphics and a great community.

Very fun game. The devs are continuously expanding on the features, the weapons are pretty balanced, the recent addition of gore and squirming bleeding out wounded people really resonates with my sadistic tendencies and the uniforms and weapons are historically accurate and look realistic. The only thing that can get kinda annoying is artillery and grenade spam which has gotten better because of the recent reduction of overall grenades everyone can carry but should still be reduced in my opinion. Battlefield 1 got nothin' on this ♥♥♥♥ (I can already tell by the trailer).

At first:
How the f*** did that guy shoot me with a rifle with iron sights from >200 yards???
WHY IS THERE SO MUCH BARBED WIRE?!?!?!?!
Why is artillery so freaking accurate?

Now:
Making head shots at >200 yards
Clearing trenches with nades and spades
Feel like a badass
Absolutely loving it....

BUT THERE'S STILL TOO MUCH BARBED WIRE!!!!

This game is perfect for anyone who's wanted to experience what true World War 1 fighting is like (and how incredibly difficult it is for anyone to do anything without getting shot).

Oh boy,

I got this game soley because it was the first World War 1 FPS game i have ever found. I liked it because this time in history is virtually non-existant in the gaming world. Seeing this was a nice change of pace.

The best part about this game, is the community. They are helpful, and unlike most FPS fanbases, they think. When I was mulling over the idea of getting this game, I checked the reviews, like you are now. What I saw a lot of was "you are gonna die a lot, but don't let that discourage you." They were right, but I kept trucking along. I got better, and it was fun; then everything changed down the road.

With the new updates coming out, Verdun fell into the trap that nearly every FPS fell into: Catering almost exclusivly to the marksman/sniper class. I made a discussion about it on the community hub, and they told me just to keep practicing. I did, but there were still some major problems.

The biggest problems facing this game and two things: 1) spawn system is a mess. Too many times have I spawned only to IMMEDIATELY get a mortar thrown right on top of me and have my head blown out my backside. 2) As stated before, catering to the marksmen class. In some maps, like Duramount for example, I REFUSE to play that map as the allies. It is such a sniper's nest. Your game play is literally nothing but spawn, die, spawn, die, spawn...die. To test this, I had a friend watch me and time how long it took me to die when i respawned. I didn't move forward, all I did was spawn and immediately crouch down, and then died. My life time? 0.83 seconds....I WISH I was making that up.

This game has(had?) a lot of promise, but so far I am seeing a bunch of wasted potential. The devs are working, but are they doing the right work? This game needs a lot of polishing. As it is now, I cannot recommend it, but I hope that will change.

we had just taken a trench, in a final stand the germans gas the trench. we put on our masks. then we heard it. "MOTARS", i ran to cover, only me and another soldier. he looks at me, then the enemy trench. he pulls out a grenade. he knows its out of range. he runs out of the trench, halfway across he throws the grenade. he tries to run back to me. he falls onto the ground, "sniped" i muttered. i hear a explosion then screams. he cleared the trench and through the gas a soldier comes. he shoots me in the leg with a luger, i ask him to spare me. he walks off. still bleeding reinforcements arive...

10/10 would P.T.S.D. again.

Verdun is a unique FPS set on The Western Front. This game is all about skill and using your brain. No game I have seen quite captures the horror of warfare like this game. When navigating no man's land you stumble across mutilated blood stained corpses or dead horses. The landscape is horryfyinging beautiful, and you are constantly fearing artillery will blow you and your squad to bits or a machine gunner will gun down your team in a final attack. Almost everything about the game is unique about this game. In no ways is this game "just another FPS" it is one of the best FPS I have ever played. 9/10
