Planet Explorers is an open world sandbox adventure RPG game set on a distant planet. The game uses a new OpenCL calculated voxel system to allow players to change the terrain in any way, create new objects such as weapons, vehicles, objects, and do it anywhere.

Was die Entwickler zu sagen haben:

“Planet Explorers is an open world RPG for its single player mode, as in there's a storyline with an ending. The game is in alpha, there will be bugs and strange things that we can't explain. Since it's an RPG, there will be more bugs than other games of the voxel type. Also due to the RPG nature, each main update will be spaced by about a month. But due to the decent size of our team, each update will contain a lot of content. We do listen very closely to our players, so you will have an opportunity to impact the direction of the game.”

A0.889 Beta Build Released on Steam

We’re getting into the final month before the a0.9 update. Lots of things to do and build, but overall, we’re getting ever closer. In this build, the biggest update is the ability to export custom armor. There are still some small problems here and there, but overall it works pretty well. We’ll be adding in custom armor stats over the next few updates. We’ve also gave aerial enemies a lot more punch. In the next build, we’ll also try to give you a look at co-op story mode, as well as more robot bosses.

Here’s a familiar custom armor made by a player:

Fixed player position consistency in multiplayer
Fixed NPC falling to the ground in cliff mission
Fixed issue with freezing animal group behavior
Fixed disease cool down time issue
Fixed issue with water display
Updated pathfinding programming, allows for differences between small and large animals
Added new bird behavior and animation
Added new Paja robot animation, effects, and behavior
Added building damage
Added the chainsaw and related animation
Added some new animation for first person view
Added NPC wait and run behavior
Added some new AI skills
Added animal droppings
Added custom armor export (single player only)
Story can now proceed all the way to GRV ship

A0.888 Released on Steam Beta.

We waited a couple of weeks for Unity to fix a crash bug in 5.2, but it’s still not released yet, so we’ll just go ahead and release the current build rolled back to 5.0. This build added several things that players have been looking forward to, the most important being the first person view. This isn’t complete yet in this build, we’ll still be adding in first person specific animation in future builds. Next we’ve added back in the bird enemies with new behavior and animation, again, this isn’t complete, we have a lot more behavior sets and animations to add. It does give you a pretty good idea where birds will end up. With birds in the game, we’re almost done streamlining the storyline to where we can start adding in new missions and contents. We’re still on course to have a0.9 out by late November.

Über dieses Spiel

In Planet Explorers, it is the year 2287, one of the first colony ships sent out by Earth arrives at the planet Maria, in the Epsilon Indi Star System. During its landing sequence, something appears in front of the massive ship that causes it to lose control and crash into the planet. Some of the colonists survive in lifeboats, but what they find is an unforgiving land filled with creatures ready to outlast the visitors from Earth. Now the survivors must explorer, gather, build, create, fight, and ultimately, build a new home.

Game Modes

Planet Explorers will feature single and multiplayer modes.

In single player there are 3 distinct selections

  • Story Mode – Story mode is the main meat and bones of the game, it is the action-adventure-rpg-somewhat-4X segment, offering npcs, missions, colony building, farming, ranching, training, diplomacy, and of course, a storyline that you can follow or ignore. This story features a 17X8km world map with many unique character, landscapes, biomes, locations, and over 100 types of potential enemies. Even though we’ve made it seem like a very action oriented game in the trailers, in reality, players can choose to not fight so much as to just plant a farm, make some food, keep the colonists alive, negotiate with the sentient aliens, and defend the perimeter from the local life forms. That can still eventually arrive at the ending. And yes, there is an ending.

  • Adventure Mode – This mode is based on a procedural map generated from a seed. Currently, it comes in a 40X40 kilometer map. Players will be able to complete random missions, defeat bosses, and explore different landscapes in the mode and eventually be able to setup conditions that they want to play (such as tower defense or attack an alien camp). This mode will also feature survival gameplay. The randomization in this mode will eventually pull in player made objects and locations so that a world will always feature something new and unique.

  • Build Mode – In this mode, there are no enemies and an infinite amount of building material. It also currently comes in a 40X40km map. Players will be able to build whatever they want in this mode, including everything in the Creations Editor. Think of this as the perfect testing ground to test everything you build. Or…it’s your place to build your garden without ever worrying about the pesky aliens.

Multiplayer allows Local Area Network and player hosted servers. It features several modes but some are still on the drawing board or going through technical trials so the final result is still in flux. Players playing multiplayer should be able to bring at least one of their created objects into multiplayer games, be it a sword, gun, or vehicle.

  • Coop – Coop comes in many selections, such as adventure mode, tower defense mode, build mode, etc. This is pretty much an open world sandbox with a max of 32 players (this number still needs to be stress tested).

  • Versus – This mode allows teams of up to 16 players to battle against 16 players from another team. We allow full terrain manipulation in this mode. Currently, it's a point based system where one team wins if they reach a certain point level based on kills, built objects, resources mined, etc.

allgemein soundtechnisch sehr schlecht gemacht.

A beautiful mess, and the reason I'll never buy another "early access" game on steam again.

- enchanting atmosphere, real alien planet feeling, vivid colors, everything is alive
- nice music complements the beautiful scenery
- crafting is great (can make vehicles, weapons, etc.)
- you can fly, glide, jump, soar---
- you can CANCEL QUESTS!! (Skyrim, are u listening?!?!)

- crash, burn, freeze like no other game
- has been in development for ages and no end in sight
- QUEST BUGS such as:
- get stuck in a quest coz NPC "doesn t recognize you"
- unfinishable quests
- self-repeating quests (you finish it and then the same NPC
asks you to do the EXACT same quest again...)
- You never know if you did something wrong, or just bug

Like when I had to protect my village from monsters and they just kept coming.
After a while it became suspicious --- and when I looked it up online it turned out
they were supposed to stop after 3-4. I killed like 3-400 and they still kept coming. bull*hit.

Many times you have to escort NPCs (hate these in every game but especially here) and they
just get stuck in the environment, or worse, simply disappear. Even when you escort them, sometimes
they dont seem to recognize this and they just keep following you ad infinitum.

I really love this game and it shows so much promise and I absolutely love the atmosphere.
Unfortunately development has been...slow... and mostly unreliable. They seem to be more concerned with
adding flashy stuff than making the game playable. At this point it feels more like an editor than a game.
This game could be so much if it could ever get finished....

add to your wishlist, buy when it s done

I like the game but at the moment the asking price is a bit high. The game definitely has bugs and is obviously underdveloped. With that said I think this has the potential to be an eye opening game. It has real potential.

Open ended sandbox, storyline exploration crafting game. Build a base, populate and grow it. Make weapons, vehicles etc. Explore the world and search for resources such as ores and plants that are found in certain terrains, then use them to craft everything you need based on schematics you earn or buy from npc's.

What it does right, it does very right. What it does wrong, is horrifically bad.

You can craft almost anything you can imagine. Guns, vehicles, buildings, etc. You make them. All of them. There are very few premades available in the game so you must make what you want or find the plans another player made. If you are creative, you can make almost anything. If you aren't and don't find other players plans, you shouldn't bother with this game. A year ago, there were numerous ISO's for everything you could imagine, but now there are very few since updates have broken previous ISO's and creators stopped making and updating them.

Vehicles include cars, bikes, planes, helicopters, boats, submarines, etc. They all share one thing in common. Movement with them sucks. Real bad. Helicopters can't seem to fly above the trees and that would be fine if they didn't get stuck on the trees if you hit one. The ground is so uneven that any ground transport bounces all over the place and hits everything in sight, or just flat out gets destroyed from bouncing and hitting the ground constantly. Turning vehicles is not as easy as you would think and often times hitting an object, backing up turning, then turning more going forward still results in you hitting the exact same object. Vehicles can get stuck on the ground, on the plants, on rocks, etc. Most areas of the map are actually faster to walk through than attempt to use a vehicle. Drive into anything and your vehicle gets damaged. Park near a predator and they will attack your vehicle until it is destroyed or they die. Fly a helicopter into a flying creature you didn't see because of lag and who knows, maybe it stalls and you drop to the ground and die while your helicopter blows up into pieces and leaves you stranded there.

The map is a limited use abstract with very little details but does allow fast movement between discovered points. The scanner map shows you more of the terrain, but is very difficult to decipher if you are looking for ore and quickly becomes useless if you are digging into a ore vein since it clutters up rapidly.

Lighting is almost useless since personal lights point directly forward with no means to use them to light up areas above, below or to the side of the character.

NPC ai is getting better but followers still get stuck on terrain sometimes and can easily be lost when you are crossing a long distance.

Combat is very basic with melee attack only or manually shooting a weapon.

Most quests are easily completed but some hunting quests give you only a name of a creature that is useless if you haven't been playing long enough to figure out what the different creatures are. Some creatures for hunting quests are also difficult to find since they can be very rare creatures or travel around a lot.

Updates are fairly slow in coming, but progress has been significant in the last year. Crashes still happen fairly often but autosave keeps you from losing more than a couple minutes of progress so they are a minor problem.

Overall, the potential for this game is great, but it does need more work to be really enjoyable. Mostly the vehicle controls and ground smoothing hamper the game at this point. When it takes forever to walk from known areas to new mission areas, it gets tedious fast when you know a vehicle would be faster, but are so not worth the trouble to use.
