A0.921 Hotfix Release

A quick hotfix patch. Also a reminder that the World Editor is working pretty well now and that there’s actually a custom map that you can try out when you press Custom in the main menu.

A0.92 Build Released

Hey everyone, a new build’s here. This build was mostly used to fix story problems. The storyline now hopefully goes to where we actually have it. The next build will be released by the end of Feb or early March and will have a fairly complete World Editor, new Adventure mode terrain, new animals, and new story additions.

In Planet Explorers, it is the year 2287, one of the first colony ships sent out by Earth arrives at the planet Maria, in the Epsilon Indi Star System. During its landing sequence, something appears in front of the massive ship that causes it to lose control and crash into the planet. Some of the colonists survive in lifeboats, but what they find is an unforgiving land filled with creatures ready to outlast the visitors from Earth. Now the survivors must explorer, gather, build, create, fight, and ultimately, build a new home.

Game Modes


Planet Explorers will feature single and multiplayer modes.

In single player there are 3 distinct selections

  • Story Mode – Story mode is the main meat and bones of the game, it is the action-adventure-rpg-somewhat-4X segment, offering npcs, missions, colony building, farming, ranching, training, diplomacy, and of course, a storyline that you can follow or ignore. This story features a 17X8km world map with many unique character, landscapes, biomes, locations, and over 100 types of potential enemies. Even though we’ve made it seem like a very action oriented game in the trailers, in reality, players can choose to not fight so much as to just plant a farm, make some food, keep the colonists alive, negotiate with the sentient aliens, and defend the perimeter from the local life forms. That can still eventually arrive at the ending. And yes, there is an ending. Story mode also features coop with other players.

  • Adventure Mode – This mode is based on a procedural map generated from a seed. Currently, it comes in a 40X40 kilometer map. Players will be able to complete random missions, defeat bosses, and explore different landscapes in the mode and eventually be able to setup conditions that they want to play (such as tower defense or attack an alien camp). This mode will also feature survival gameplay. The randomization in this mode will eventually pull in player made objects and locations so that a world will always feature something new and unique.

  • Build Mode – In this mode, there are no enemies and an infinite amount of building material. It also currently comes in a 40X40km map. Players will be able to build whatever they want in this mode, including everything in the Creations Editor. Think of this as the perfect testing ground to test everything you build. Or…it’s your place to build your garden without ever worrying about the pesky aliens.

Multiplayer allows Local Area Network and player hosted servers. It features several modes but some are still on the drawing board or going through technical trials so the final result is still in flux. Players playing multiplayer should be able to bring at least one of their created objects into multiplayer games, be it a sword, gun, or vehicle.

  • Coop – Coop comes in many selections, such as adventure mode, tower defense mode, build mode, etc. This is pretty much an open world sandbox with a max of 32 players (this number still needs to be stress tested).

  • Versus – This mode allows teams of up to 16 players to battle against 16 players from another team. We allow full terrain manipulation in this mode. Currently, it's a point based system where one team wins if they reach a certain point level based on kills, built objects, resources mined, etc.

I've played over 195 hours now, and have finally gotten to the point that the "100%" load bug make this game unplayable for me. The game has alot of potential but when you but 10+ hours into a game only to have to restart it because of a load issue, and the only solution is to start a new game... it's just not worth it.

Developers are slow to release bug fixes, and alot of the same ones keeps this game from being a really good game.

a very advanced sandbox minecraft esque game. You can make your own weapons, armor, vehicles (including ground, air and water vehicles) and decorations. The company has been off on basically all their deadlines however its not that big of a deal considering how amazing this game is. I recommend this to anyone who has a creative itch, this game will scratch it.

I greatly enjoy this game. Making custom items, weapons, and transportation in a simple editor is what makes this game just that much better. I love the sounds of the enviroment around you as you play. It gives the sense of beauty to an uknown planet and how alive it is. I have started to get back into the game since the latest update and I'm not disappointed. The graphic changes are amazing from what it used to be! Still can't believe this was made on Unity. Overall, it's a great survival and building game. It's even better with friends! If other reviews or images make the game not seem worth it, the game is still worth a try.

Tip:
The bigger the weapon the more damage it does. So if you're building a sword, make it a big one.

Planet Explorers have finally come good on all their promises of what this game would be and I got to say it's pretty awesome!!

I know it is going even further forwards but man the game now is just so cool compared to what it was back in the 0.8x versions now at version 0.911 and it has compatibility with my GT 750M, No Full Screen Issues, All brushes and materials can be used, No NPC problems like prior.. sometimes they run into trees and things but quickly navigate around them but it means you can use trees as cover sometimes to avoid direct hits which is a logical step forwards :)

Oh and they brought back First Person View. I would recommend this game to anyone who has enjoyed playing ARK Survival Evolved, Space Engineers, Minecraft or similar.. it has a lot of the same functionality but lets you take it to the next level in terms of customisation, invention, exploration and building.

There are plenty of hostile enemies out there in the wilderness and you really do have to survive, you can grow crops.. start up a settlement... get into trades with NPC's or other players if that's your thing.

The only thing I would say is a potential issue currently : The game needs some Officially Hosted Dedicated Servers.. Right now all dedicated servers seem to be player hosted. Best Multiplayer Mode in my opinion = Adventure Mode : Survival Setting

I know this is early access and so I will treat it as such in my review.

Right now I cannot recommend this to all but the most die hard EA players that must try everything before they are released. I'll be brief as I can. There are some positives about this game but in a nutshell it's not ready yet for me to give it a full thumbs up. Wish Steam had a way to give 1 to 5 stars. If this were a star rating I'd give it a 3 for now.

It seems like it has a lot of potential. The graphics, while a bit simple, are attractive enough, in a cute, and cartoony way. If that look is something that appeals to you it will fit in just fine. I don't mind that aspect but just pointing that out. Which brings me to the first downside. with the simplified graphics, i don't understand with a very capable gaming computer like I have, why it has stutter, quite frequently. I would say every 20 to 30 seconds the game stutters for a moment and although it's not game breaking it is quite annoying.

The positives from my prior game plays (where I played quite a bit more time back weeks ago) I like: the gathering, build mode and craft-heaviness of the game at least early on.

The combat could use some polish along with the gathering aspects.

The tutorial or beginning doesn't tell you much about how to do things and although I don't want hand holding for every little thing, it would be nice for the basics like how to open the replicator. Basics like this, I know you can find in help but I will venture to guess that most players don't like to spend their early minutes in a game looking up how to do all the basic stuff.

Again, this game could be good once all details are worked out, and I will keep an eye out but for now I cannot recommend it.
