Welcome to Alan the writer, the author. A story is not a machine that does what you tell it. A story is a beast with a life of its own. You can create it, shape it, but as the story grows, it starts wanting things of its own. Change one thing, and you set off a chain reaction of events that spreads through the whole thing. This is Alan Wake a plot filled with darkness and shadows but also deep emotions as you try to find out what happend to Alice his wife. Through six amazing chapters and the most astonishing story ever you will dwelve between the darkness of "the taken" trying to survive with a pistol and a flashlight. The flashlight is your only tool to destroy the protection from the taken while you will kill them with your pistol or gun. For not being from Finland I would love to say to the makers of this game what an amazing and inspiring game you have brought about with a rich story that goes with you all the way to the end. It is not just the characters in this game that makes it "whole" it is the whole concept and environment and all the things in the game contributing to an emotional state of mind, the horrific experience and the beautiful landscapes. Get it and form your own opinion!

Another good Remedy game, fits along side their previous good games of Death Rally - Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne.

Not only was the game play fun with quite interesting mechanics of Light VS. Dark, the story line got me interested to the very end.

And the end of the story is where the entire presentation falters.
Slight cliffhanger, no solid end.
According to numerous websites, there were plans on an Alan Wake sequel, but that didn't due to 'not enough sales' says Mr. Microsoft Games. Which is a pity.

Otherwise, a good ride till the sudden stop.
A good buy indeed.

Alan Wake is an extraordinarily crafted game.
Its unique supernatural story pulls you so much into the game, making it hard for you to stop playing it!
It has a great story, graphics, crazy atmosphere, sound, gameplay. It's very impressive.

The only downside is that the camera can cause some issues, looks like console-to-PC port was still not done completely right. But that can't stop you from playing it

A Stephen King like novel of a game! You as the player Alan Wake, don't know if you are living in a nightmare and all that around you is a bad dream or you are wide awake and dealing with reality in the surroundings around you. It's fun and spooky mystery! You will feel on edge most of the game. Good misxture of storytelling, and action sequnces so you never get bored. The soundtrack is also a must listen and really sets the mood and atmosophere for this game. The graphics, lighting and world textures are absolutely stunning! Voice acting is also top notch and does not feel cheesy in any way. I would put Alan Wake game it right up there with some of the most memorable horror video games of all time such as Silent Hill and Resident Evil.

My review of Alan Wake will be based on 4 categories: Performance, Gameplay, Graphics, and Story. As a summary, Alan Wake takes a new turn for the genre as it combines the narrative structure of a novel and the episodic format of a television show for a one-of-a-kind concept. Players may find the gameplay polarizing as it will either be too repetitive or true to form for fans of survival-horror games. Neverthless, it still delivers a story that is very new to the industry yet executes it flawlessly which leaves players waiting for more.

Performance
An excellent port with lots of PC exclusive features. Performance on a FX-6300 processor, R9 270 GPU, and 8 GB of RAM in a 1080p resolution, ultra settings, V-Sync on yields an average of 59 FPS and a lowest of 39 FPS.

Graphics options available
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=421007311
Game comes with support for controllers and rebindable keys as well as subtitles, HUD toggle on/off, and an FOV slider. Note that the pre-rendered cutscenes are locked at 720p, running at 30 FPS with black bars at the top and bottom. Also note that for the added immersion, Remedy used vector blur instead of the more traditionally used motion blur which will probably annoy some players. Starting the game with -noblur parameter will remove the effect. No bugs or crashes experienced during playthroughs but be wary that no game is bug-free. If by chance, you do encounter some bugs and crashes, you can visit this site for a list of possible fixes.

Gameplay
Direct to the point, Alan Wake's gameplay is not good. It's simple, repetitive, and there's the stamina gauge which most players complain about and probably the only feature which got them killed in the first place. It's decent enough though to warrant it as a survival-horror game and it has features which you'll only find in this title.

If it wasn't obvious enough in the screenshots, trailers, and gameplay footage, Alan Wake's combat heavily revolves around the usage of light sources to navigate the world and fight enemies called the taken. Combat basically consists of a two-step process where you burn off the 'shadow shield' surrounding taken then shoot them. Seems tedious at first but once you get the hang of it, it's still tedious the second time around. You get to fight his enemies with a limited variation of weapons (six in total throughout the game) that somehow disappears after you complete a level. Finding them again is tedious as well and the locations where you find them is questionable. In return for fighting taken in the game, the game fights back with the dreadful stamina gauge which Remedy thought is a good idea to add in a title where the protagonist is a wimp writer who runs out of breath in the first two minutes that he tries to run. It was even reported that the protagonist running out of breath is the number one cause of death in the Bright Falls area. Clearly, Remedy was aiming for realism in this part because writers are only good with their imagination and not with their bodies, am I right? Most of the time, you'll find the protagonist catching his breath and die rather than reaching the safe haven and live. If the stamina gauge was too much for you, then the lack of gameplay scenarios might make it up for it's shortcomings as you spend a quarter and a half of the game walking and running through the great outdoors, all the while fighting the same variations of taken and possessed inanimate objects and carrying the same freaking guns while being bothered by the wonky camera as you realize that the only enemy here is the lack of difficulty and the stamina gauge.

Now, why doesn't it work? The gameplay sounds like survival-horror material right? You've got the guns, the relentless taken coming after you, the freaking stamina gauge, but there's something missing right? right! They forgot the most important aspect of a good gameplay: utilization of the features to its fullest. When you talk survival-horror, you think of gameplay that's so limited yet fully functional at the same time; it may be repetitive, but it keeps you on your toes and there's always a new challenge to tackle because the scenario keeps changing. Resident Evil: REmake had you choosing which zombies to kill and burn - less you want them to turn into a Crimson Head. Dead Space had you cutting off limbs and making sure that the body on the floor is really dead. Silent Hill 2 had you fighting against the main protagonist's psyche as it takes on a physical form. The only thing that's memorable about Alan Wake's gameplay is that it's repetitive and the fact that the protagonist runs out of breath so easily. There's a lot of things that they could've done with gameplay features like these - especially with the development time that they were given. How about adding Taken that are invulnerable to light and have him/them chase you through the woods? What about having the protagonist trapped in a factory at night and he has to fortify the area, set up traps, and scour the building for supplies? Heck, the underused and easy puzzles could've implemented the light-based gameplay to a great degree and would've made for some very interesting challenges. Small things like these make a very repetitive game fun and the various gameplay scenarios constantly makes the game fresh.

Graphics
Fact: Alan Wake is one of the most atmospheric games to ever exist. It's also a far cry from the industrial-focused level design that's so typical of modern games. It's gorgeous and peaceful at daytime, beautiful yet deadly at nighttime. The combination of industrial and natural settings paired with the amazing lighting and particle effects make it stand out from others. Character design is also praiseworthy as the cast of characters is very consistent and in-tone with the pacific northwest setting. If you've seen the Twin Peaks' cast, then more or less, you'll find the inspirations and similarities a bit too close to each other.

Fact: Alan Wake is one of the lowest in the AAA games section when it comes to the beauty and immersion factor of the game being constantly broken when you let the protagonist face the camera. The emotionless stares of the characters along with the bad lip-sync and the wooden animations make the game look like a horror show where robots are cast as actors. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem for other games but this is a freaking horror game! A genre which requires genuine and believable emotions from the cast! Sure, you may say that other survival-horror games had the problem too but what do you think is the difference between those games and this one? They conveyed the story through cutscenes! Alan Wake rarely uses cutscenes for the game and you'll always witness them talking to each other like neanderthals expressing their love to a rock.

Story
The protagonist must be a descendant of Max Payne because he comments on every situation and everything that he sees. Anyways, Alan Wake's story is really good! Especially if you're a literature buff who likes to read stories of horror and terror or tales from the deep. You'll quickly pick up on how the story is structured like a novel and how the characters talk like they're a cast in a thriller. You'll also notice as you progress in the game the love that Sam Lake has for Stephen King and his works as well as others like Lovecraftian horror, Kubrick and Hitchcock films The Shining and The Birds respectively, and more obvious ones like Twin Peaks. Special mention for the first game that I've seen where product placement plays a very heavy and prominent role as cutscenes focus on the products first rather than the actual scene, everything that you use is branded, and Energizer is always there to save the day.

And there you have it.

I've beaten this game and the DLC multiple times before despite my hours as of (Nov 18th, 2014) saying otherwise. This game has one of the best storylines I've ever played in a game. It is a true "Mind ♥♥♥♥" to say the least and will keep you entertained from start to finish. The games graphics are still good when compared to next gen graphics and the game itself can be quite challenging at times. The gameplay is a bit clunky at times but is good enough.

Deep psychological thriller at its best. The suspense keeps you on your toes all the time. The writing is brilliant, acting and voice acting are just tasty, dramatic events unfold like in a movie - well, that's what the authors wanted, whole game feels like a movie. TwinPeaks-ish movie.
Once you get used to clumsy camera and controls, you're all set to enjoy this intense ride.
The visuals are beautiful (I made a ton of screenshots), design is awesome, sounds are engulfing, and the music... both original and licensed, it adds A LOT to the mood. Combat is satisfying, too. A lot of collectibles and achievements, if you're into that stuff.
Overall, this is a must-play and unforgettable experience

In Alan Wake you take up the role as a writer named...Alan Wake. After his wife goes missing you set out to find her while a Dark Presence haunts the town of Bright Falls.

In Alan Wake you fight against darkness, and I really love that. Armed with a flashlight and a revolver you make your way through Bright Falls and it's surrounding mountains and forests.

The eviroments and the scenery is outstanding and it really improves the light vs darkness theme the game has. The story is fantastic. Really now, it's really good and doesn't give everything away directly, so you might have to reflect on what happened. It will still leave you very satisfied.

The combat is pretty cool but it can become very tedious after a while as it can feel like you're doing the same thing over and over again. But the supplies are limited so it really gives it this somewhat survival feeling.

Alan Wake is not a perfect game, It's close but not perfect.

Pros
- Fantastic story and theme
- Great enviroments and scenery

Cons
- The combat, it can become repetitious but I wouldn't abastain from playing the game because of this.

A fantastic (but short) atmospheric game relying on its strongpoints of storytelling to make up for what can be seen as shortcomings in the action sequences. A great deal of effort is put into engrossing the player in its world, setting up th e game as an episodic miniseries, complete with intros, recaps, and outros, as well as plenty of collectibles and side tihngs to find that expand on what's happening. The game plays well, but unfortunately combat can fall short and become repetitive, since the tools at your disposal are few and mostly upgrade in pure numbers. It's tense enough to keep you on your toes, but playing on normal/hard, i never felt truly stretched for resources except once during the game. There are only a few enemy types so combat becomes fairly formulaic after a time.

That said, the presentation of the game, and the story it tells make up for the difference in spades, and it's a shame the game only got two small DLC episodes instead of the true "second season" it deserved.

Would definitely recommend to fans of the thriller/mystery genre, as long as you're OK with never really finding out what happens after the end.

Altrough i only played 5 hours so far and only completed 2 episodes, i have to admit this is one of the best games i have ever played!

Great graphics, Amazing story, Very interesting and creative, and also very spooky.
Most stuff are unexpected here, which makes it really awesome!
I tend to get spooked and jumped one too many times, but it doesn't annoy me since the game is so interesting.
I am not sure yet if it is worth the $29.99 or not, i am not sure how many episodes i have more expecting on my way at the game.
Me personally, got it on sale but it was worth every penny i have spent on it!
Buy it!

I played American Nightmare before playing this one, so i was kinda dropped into the story without having knowledge of the backstory of the characters and the main plot itself. When this game went on sale, i immediately bought it because i enjoyed American Nightmare, so i thought that probably i would enjoy the main game even more and i did.

The combat system its not the best, but its okay for PC. The story itself and the events that happen on the game are pretty good, the idea of the darkness vs light was innovative for its time and for people that like good storylines in videogames, you have here a good example of it.

I could see Alan Wake as a TV show, but i enjoyed it a lot as a videogame and i wish they release a sequel of the game, maybe to close this series with a "happy ending" to Alan´s story. I think the guy deserves it by now.

8/10. I carry a flashlight everytime i go out in the darkness, just in case. Thx Remedy Entertainment.

Alan Wake is the sort of game only the people at Remedy could pull off. It has all the charm and meticulous world-building that made the Max Payne series great with the game universe having its own pop culture you're privvy to and yet managing to keep your nerves on edge.

It's not a terrifying game in the sense that Amnesia or Silent Hill are (though Silent Hill is the series I'd liken it to the most) but it does its job as a suspenseful and tense survival horror nonetheless. Using light as a weapon and having to conserve your resources makes every fight an exciting one and the pacing is very well executed, giving you the occasional downtime while the story advances.

The story is an interesting breed and pays homage to multiple works from HP Lovecraft and Stephen King to Twin Peaks and the Twilight Zone and does its job well to keep you playing. There are some over-arching themes that I found interesting, but that I won't spoil here. Suffice to say that as far as Survival Horror stories go, Alan Wake is at least moderately ambitious, thematically. The structure is an episodic one splitting the story in several manageable 2-3 hour long chapters giving you a clear cut between story arcs so that you can take a break for the day.

The graphics make for some beautiful, if perhaps a bit dated, sceneries even if most of the game takes place at night. There is attention to detail to spare in Alan Wake and it seems to be a labor of love. The sound and voice acting are subject to little criticism and I guarantee that at least one or two tracks from the score and soundtrack will wind up in your playlist.

It comes highly recommended.

If you like horror-action game ,this is your answer. DO NOT MISS THIS.
BEFORE "what is this game look like boing game to play" "i need only card drop"
AFTER played 10 min "this game make me heart attack, can't stop playing btw the storyline so fkin good and Graphic too"
don't judge this game so fast just try it yourself.

+need flashlight combine with gun to kill taken
+environment and shock scene make you fear the darkness (if you turn off the light and play this game)
+easy to control
+you can't runaway from taken without flashlight
+light is everything

-sometimes you can't dodge even your press dodge botton in the right time
-alot of battery but limit ammo (flashlight can't kill taken, if you run out of ammo just run)
-make me heart attack

82/100 RECOMMEND.

Alan Wake is an incredibly strong port following the original release on the XBOX 360 - itself preceded by nearly a decade in development. Remedy (creators of the original two Max Payne games) deliver a lovingly crafted narrative married to engaging survival horror gameplay, and fans of either will find a lot to appreciate. Alan Wake borrows liberally and eagerly from a variety of influences - homages can be found from sources as diverse as norse mythology, Stephen King, Twin Peaks and the previously mentioned Max Payne.

VISUALS AND ATMOSPHERE: Graphically, the game has chops. The small town of Bright Falls (and the forests of the Pacific Northwest that surround it) are well done. Small details strewn throughout the sets reward observant players by alluding to a narrative beyond the main story. The game often finds clever ways of interacting with the props of the environment, which lends itself towards the feeling of a very dramatic (and dynamic) atmosphere. The effects of the darkness - on the environment and everything in it - is easily one of the most impressive mechanics in the game.

However, stilted animations often betray the models, resulting in awkward puppet-like mouth movements when characters speak. This is most noticable when characters are in distress, and regrettably (given the theme), characters often have a good reason to be.

Sound is well done. Ambient music is tense but often subtle (though it can border on repetitive), and the game prefers to use it's carefully chosen collection of licensed music to solicit emotions beyond circumstancial flare ups. Voice acting was solid.

4/5

NARRATIVE: Alan Wake is both author and audience of the story, an unreliable narrator thrust into progressively stranger circumstances as he investigates the disappearance of his wife. As a protagonist he is far removed from the chisled and grizzled stereotype, often openly frustrated, petulant or terrified. There is a clear sacrifice made where the depth given to him as a character supercedes our ability to really step into his shoes, and I found it to be a trade worth making. The story is divided up into clear chapters emulating a television episode, featuring a brief recap ("Previously on Alan Wake") and a clear intermission at their end. It is an often confusing story, but unapologetically so, and the presentation is exceptionally well done.

4/5

GAMEPLAY: Presented in third person with a focus on light and darkness, expanding on the themes strongly featured in the story. The bulk of gameplay involves either exploration or combat, which is often difficult. Enemies will often spawn without end in dark areas of the woods, adding urgency in your race to the next light source. I felt challenged (and at times frustrated), but never cheated.

There are limitations to the engine. The excitement you'll feel after stepping behind the wheel of one of the game's many vehicles will fade quickly when you actually have to drive them. Even with care, driving often felt like a DUI simulator, and vehicles frequently arrived at their destinations like they'd gone through a demolition derby. Additionally, the game often pretends to be a platformer and fails, miserably (as you invariably will during these portions). Jump mechanics are imprecise and I often found difficulty in clearing gaps with any degree of certainty.

3/5

OVERALL: 4/5, easy. Well worth the asking price.

Alan Wake shows off some nice dark grizzly graphics and a new gameplay feature where your flashlight is your best friend to ward off monsters. While Alan Wake is an action horror game, I found the action to not be the most fluid action in these types of 3rd person games. The storyline was good, though not fantastic by any means. While I'd recommend playing this game, I wouldn't place it in my top list of games you should play. Play this if you enjoy the horror/action genre, or else move on.
