What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“More things are constantly being added and the experience will change over time. It's less beta testing at this point and more expanding on the game, although bugs and glitches are inevitable.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Most likely for several months, but it will depend on what the community thinks.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The current final release goal is to improve graphics, upgrade networking functionality, create more content and provide full Windows, OSX and Linux support.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is completely playable with hours and hours of content to explore.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“It will remain free, but the abilities provided by Gold may change. Nothing that will make the game pay to win, however.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Throughout all of the development so far popularly recommended ideas have been added to the game. This will continue through the Steam release with the forums. The Steam Workshop could also be integrated to allow the community to create their own content. Polls are widely used to gauge community interest in various ideas.”

3.2.7.0 Update Notes

Hello!

These are patch notes for the preview branch, not what's currently default. If you're interested in testing this you can join with the password "OPERATIONMAPLELEAF"

After a poll yesterday it was determined about 50% of people want an in-game map, but to compensate the folks who didn't this will not show up in hardcore mode, rather being replaced with static. Some of the huge benefits of having this new map system:

  • You can see where you and your friends are to easily meet up, and look around to see where you want to check out.
  • Level creators don't have to make a custom map item for each of their levels.
  • Any map can give its locations official names, and server admin commands can reference these names.
  • It opens up all sorts of possibilities for waypoints and other such features.
Additions:
  • Added nodes tab to editor, which for now is just locations. In the future it will contain other types of special events/spawns/etc.
  • Added ability as server admin to teleport to location by name. For example: @teleport playername/town or @teleport playername/farm
  • Added easy and hard mode to server filters and singleplayer menu.
  • Added player dashboard with inventory and information tabs. Information tab shows player list and map.
  • Added map interface that shows you and your group mates. This DOES NOT show up in hardcore mode.
  • Added server-side death messages. (for now)
  • Added ability to take map-wide orthographic picture in editor pause menu. (Saves to Map.png in level folder.)
  • Added ability to access inventory regardless of current action.
  • Added any mode filter to server list.
Improvements:
  • Improved underwater vehicle respawning.
Tweaks:
  • Disabled skills on menu until they're implemented to avoid confusion.
  • Reduced footstep volume slightly.
  • Menu music doesn't play if it's already played.
  • Modified Unity's terrain shader to disable annoying black shading on grass.
  • The server console shows chat commands as well.
  • Water extends to the skybox limit.
  • Map size labels are descriptive rather than measurements.
  • Reduced vertical offset for exiting surrounded vehicles.
Fixes:
  • Fixed getting into a vehicle freezing the player.
  • Fixed inventory animation when sitting.
  • Fixed some file storage issues.
  • Fixed navigation sticking to water.
  • Fixed attempting to swap stance when standing in water.
  • Fixed entering water in a non-standing stance.
  • Fixed game mode on loading screen.
  • Fixed ping box color on the server list.
  • Fixed navigation flag editor colliding with itself.
  • Fixed impact effects being ridiculously large.
  • Fixed bottom of chopped tree on highest level of detail.
  • Fixed (hopefully) the crazy rubberbanding issue caused by the last update.
  • Fixed resources spawning underground.
Originally this update was going to have terrain cutting instead of all this, but after spending many hours today and yesterday working on it unfortunately a solution that didn't compromise on graphical quality/cause loads of issues was not found. It is now highly unlikely that this feature will ever be added to the game.

Be sure to check out LCBradley3k's awesome Unturned mods site! Anyone can upload or download custom content and there's already some pretty neat stuff up there.

Thanks for reading!

3.2.6.0 Update Notes

Hello!

These are patch notes for the preview branch, not what's currently default. If you're interested in testing this you can join with the password "OPERATIONMAPLELEAF"

You can now harvest resources in 3.0! They're significantly improved from 2.0:

  • The health system is dramatically different allowing stronger trees like pines to have higher durability, and all weapons can damage them. Use explosives to quickly blow up a tree, or punch it repeatedly (literally) 50 times. Obviously the axe is currently the best for chopping them down.
  • The trunk falls over with physics.
  • Logs fall in the direction of the trunk, and sticks fall around the base.
  • Item drops are guaranteed, and there are multiple types of logs and sticks.
  • Resources re-spawn steadily.
Additions:
  • Added the ability to harvest trees.
  • Added some glass models to the editor.
Improvements:
  • Improved memory useage significantly between client/server.
  • Improved collider performance by only loading navigation inside navigation areas on server.
  • Bug reports leads to a post about how to report properly.
  • Improved networking performance for effects.
  • Improved all respawn systems.
Tweaks:
  • Removed render cap on roads, although it is still recommended to not make them too long.
  • Brought info label up to date.
Fixes:
  • Fixed player collision.
  • Fixed driving dead vehicles.
  • Fixed a loading screen bug.
  • Fixed a bug standing near the edge.
  • Fixed engine not updating when swapping seats.
  • Fixed headlights staying on when exploded.
  • Fixed vehicles getting misreferenced.
  • Fixed not being allowed into underwater vehicles.
  • Fixed turning feeling slugish.
Ultimately, however, logs currently do nothing and are probably have some bugs yet to be found.

What do you think of the idea of showing death messages to everyone? Vote here.

Thanks for reading!

About This Game

Unturned is a sandbox game in the emerging multiplayer apocalypse survival genre. Rather than focusing on being an MMO it provides players with easy systems to sit down and survive the zombie infestation with their friends. Over the course of a typical adventure, groups will have a blast fortifying locations, scavenging for supplies, trying to live off the land and negotiating with other people. The game is being developed entirely with the community in focus, and tons of features are based entirely on feedback:

Fortification:
Players can build massive forts out of structural building blocks, or build onto smaller buildings in the world with barricades. It is also possible to create traps and intricate electronic systems. More options for building are constantly being added based on what the community requests.

Survival:
It is entirely possible to live off the wilderness by harvesting trees and rocks, growing crops and hunting animals down. What sort of survival stuff is added is entirely decided by the community.

Explore:
The game goes where the community wants it to. The initial release map is set on the lovely Prince Edward Island, but over the next few months many more locations will arrive for players to explore depending on what the community wants to see. Currently the island has plenty of interesting locations to discover and loot.

Bandits:
Players can choose to enter player versus player servers and battle other players to steal their gear. Banditry is highly supported with plenty of weapons and sneaky devices.

Heroes:
Players can join player versus environment servers to team up with other people, and easily create clans to play with their pals.

Early Access:
This is the first public release of the game, but new features and content are constantly getting added as a result of community feedback. You can see how far the game has come with the help of the community since the original testing prototype:

At first, I got Unturned and started the game expecting a minecraft-like, regular survival game. I logged in, ate all my food and quickly died from zombies. The game seemed to be based on punching zombies, and eating berries (a terrible idea for a game just saying). But on my second try at the game, the world really opened up. I realized the true potential of the game, being an awesome multiplayer survival game. The weapons are fun and easy to gather, and the game becomes SO much better when played with friends whether its PvP or PvE. Overall I give the game a 7.5/10 as it's a great game, but aspects such as overall Zombie mechanics and building need iprovement.

Solid survival game. I wasn't very keen when I first tried it and felt lackluster because of my lack of knowledge towards the game. I later picked it back up and played with a friend who is miles more experienced than me and made the game fun for me.

I've only clocked about 40+ hours to this game as I'm writing this and I already love this game so much. Definitely in my top 5 games on my Steam library. That's quite a big statement to make, right? (But definitely not the first. Sorry! :P)

Crafting is very in-depth. Can be very difficult and fustrating at times. Takes awhile to memorize them. I'd still have to refere to the wiki every now and then. The suvival aspect of this game is very challenge at first, but can be very fustrating later into the game, but surely it's miles easier than when we all first started playing this game. You always need to be wary of your hunger, hydration and sickness.

Building is very fustrating with the terrain around you. The land might look straight but nope, it's just slightly higher. You gotta find the perfect location. I suggest one should always prepare the materials a day before you want to build so you can focus whole heartedly into the build. Ain't nobody wants to stop halfway of their build to go chop more trees, right?

With almost *every* game, it's clearly better played with friends. Adds a lot more fun and speeds up process if you're building. I've never played PvP so I can't give you a good picture of that. Longer hours of playing this game is not recommended. Take 30 mins break every now and then. I once played this game 6 hours straight and felt very heavy and burnt out (was building a huge house).

Summary/conclusion:
Ideal game if you just want to sit down, lay back and kill some zombies for a good 2 hours or 3. Anything exceeding 3 hours might just feel forced and heavy. Building is just a plus to this game. A very big PHAT plus. Nothing is more satisfying than you performing a headshot onto a zombie's head. I hope you'll like this game as much as I do.

I personally think unturned was and still is great game. Having survival aspects like crafting, infection, and pvp make the game a 10 out of 10 game for me. Although it has no textures what-so-ever, I still think that gives it originality and complexity to a whole new level.

Maybe a good game to test out so when I buy Rust or DayZ I could experience what im going through and what the main point of those games are.

I say Rust and DayZ Because Unturned is based off of Three games.

Minecraft,DayZ,Rust

Rust for Building custom houses or Buildings

and DayZ for Mostly Going around Places to find Guns and Ammo and maybe Food and surviving.

But i still Think this game Is amazing and i do like how it is based off of DayZ and Rust.Makes it more interesting.

This is.... Actually a really cool game.
I reccomend you try it, because even for an early access, it already has a lot of features and it runs good with little bugs.

Really, it's just like RUST but free. Or actually any zombie surival. Still though, try it.

This game has proved to be RIDICULOUSLY fun, especially with the ability to join and host servers. It has a very simplistic idea of surviving in a roblox, apocolyptic environment. Crafting and building shelter also adds a lot more to this game.

Although the game is still in beta for the new update, I believe that Nelson(creator) is doing a great job of implementing everyone's ideas and improving this game and making enjoyable to all.

:) THANKS NELSON FOR CREATING THIS GAME! Soooo pumped for the next update.

unturned is a very fun sanbox survival game, it is similar to dayz. However, the system of unturned is much more simple, which help the new talents to be used to the game quickly.

Minecraft Styled game developed by one 17 year old teenager...

It is a well built game considering one person made it, but it needs improving.

Positives:
- Well built
- Many Zombies and items
- Crafting that can make some nifty things
- Backpacks to increase inventory space
- Real Life aspect such as food and water to survive
- Relatively good achievements to obtain
- Decent Character Customization
- Easy to create and join friends servers
- Upgradable skills for killing Zombies (Lost upon Death, though nifty idea)
- Free to play

Negatives:
- Easy to explore the whole map in a couple of hours
- No incentive to craft anything
- Gets Boring and repetitive after a while
- Promised numerous updates and not delivered
- Seems repetitive (Once explored everything there is really not much to do)
- Gold doesn't give too much

Improvements:
- Crafting (Needs overhaul and incentive)
- Cars getting stuck (Cars are very glitchy at times)
- Needs more to do

Overall, in my opinion, the game is similar to Minecraft in the aspect you can craft and obtain items. However, you can't dig wherever you want like in Minecraft. Also, there is no incentive to craft and the game can get boring quickly as the map is too small and easy to explore. Although, for a game that's made by one person and is free to play... then it's really well made and worth checking out/playing for a while until you get bored.

Overall, I'd rate this 3/5!

PS: Once the highly anticipated update finally get's released, this review may change. But for now it's worth playing for a while.
