Building Interior Culling:

You can now mark your buildings to hide the objects inside when further away for better performance. The easiest option is to add the "LOD Mesh" flag which uses the mesh bounds to determine what is inside. For concave objects you can instead use "LOD Area" and add multiple OcclusionAreas for the volumes with objects. Very large objects can also have a "LOD_Bias" multiplier which adjusts the activation distance. This also means you can have much more detailed interiors now, assuming the building is set up properly.

Active Zombie/Animal Performance:

Several server side performance improvements/update balancing were also made in an attempt to keep everything stable as it gets busy. The hope is that this will help keep the ping closer to just the travel time, but we'll see.

Scope Performance:

Previously the dual-render scopes only rendered twice when a scope was attached, but as part of a fix last week to reduce stutter when moving around the map with foliage enabled the same issue seems to have begun happening when enabling the scope camera, so to avoid these delays I've tweaked the scopes to always render in the background.

If this causes a drop in performance you can also use the overlay scope option, but if it's generally too severe we can adjust the default scope quality or bring back the option to disable foliage.

Ideally requiring foliage can be kept because it provides some cover, but fortunately there are bushes which are rendered regardless of the foliage setting.

Om dette spil

Unturned is a sandbox game in the emerging multiplayer apocalypse survival genre. Rather than focusing on being an MMO it provides players with easy systems to sit down and survive the zombie infestation with their friends. Over the course of a typical adventure, groups will have a blast fortifying locations, scavenging for supplies, trying to live off the land and negotiating with other people. The game is being developed entirely with the community in focus, and tons of features are based entirely on feedback:

Fortification:
Players can build massive forts out of structural building blocks, or build onto smaller buildings in the world with barricades. It is also possible to create traps and intricate electronic systems. More options for building are constantly being added based on what the community requests.

Survival:
It is entirely possible to live off the wilderness by harvesting resources, fishing, growing crops and hunting animals down. What sort of survival stuff is added is entirely decided by the community.

Explore:
The game goes where the community wants it to. The initial release map is set on the lovely Prince Edward Island, but over the next few months many more locations will arrive for players to explore depending on what the community wants to see. Currently the island has plenty of interesting locations to discover and loot.

Bandits:
Players can choose to enter player versus player servers and battle other players to steal their gear. Banditry is highly supported with plenty of weapons and sneaky devices.

Heroes:
Players can join player versus environment servers to team up with other people, and easily create clans to play with their pals.

Roomscale VR Support:


Unturned's level editor now supports the Vive! You can build the visuals of your maps using motion controllers with modes that provide the same functionality as the desktop editor, along with some special abilities like throwing objects. For non-visuals elements of the level such as data entry, spawn management or navigation baking the desktop editor is still required.

I first got this game because it was free and it had zombies, my two biggest selling points.
At my first play of it I was thinking "Look at the state of these graphics, these zombies look like something a child would draw"
Now after playing the game for more than the time it takes to get owned by your first blocky zombie, I have to admit that it is probably one of the best free to play zombie survival games available.

After leaving the devs to work on it a little more I was very happy to see the changes they had made to what was a good game making it a great game, a more understandable crafting system was added, the level system they had in place was improved upon, more maps have been added as well as more guns and vehicles, and after foraging for berries that made my character trip balls I had completely forgotten about the graphics looking like minecraft and was instead focusing on trying to stop my ♥♥♥ from clenching while being chased by a horde with nothing but my fists.

I'd say buy this game, only it's free, so you really have no excuse not to give it a go.

NOTE: This review is from a mostly single player perspective. A few cons won't really apply if you are playing online. I will update it if I ever decide to try out the multiplayer aspects more.

The first thing I tell people when I mention this game is not to judge a book by its cover. Despite its simplistic and blocky appearance, Unturned is a very in-depth survival game and can be loads of fun. If you like survival or crafting games or just killing zombies I'd recommend giving it at try.

It couldn't hurt either way, the game is free to play with an optional "gold upgrade" that unlocks some things like special skins, extra character slots, extra customization options, and other fluff. It also grants access to "Gold" servers which grant more experience and loot if that is your thing. It's only $5 and I bought it mostly just to support the lone developer. Any money you spend on the game will not give you an advantage nor will anyone else be at an advantage for spending money. You know, the way it really should be. Even with access to gold servers everyone is still on a level playing field.

Pros:
  • Several skills to choose from and level up by spending earned experience points as well as a bonus skill that give you unique properties.
  • Crafting items is simple with plenty of recipes for various items from makeshift weapons to grilled cheese sandwiches. Some require investment in corresponding skills in order to be created.
  • You can build up bases from wood, metal, or brick as of the time of this review. You can also place most object onto vehicles or create makeshift vehicles. Need mobile storage? Slap a crate or locker down on your vehicle.
  • Speaking of vehicles, there's a good variety. Trucks, vans, sport cars, sedans, and other generic models can be found. Watercraft and aircraft were both recently added as well.
  • Lots of ways to play. Do you want to scavenge for what you need? How about farm your own crops or hunt wild animals for their meat and hides? Maybe you just want to kick back and fish? Or maybe you just want to hop in a car and mow down some zombies.
  • A wide assortment of weapons, both melee and ranged. Guns and most ranged weapons can be customized with attachments.
  • Different difficulties and settings to customize your experience if you like.
  • A built-in map editor if you're creative type.
  • Workshop support so you can download player made maps and mods.
  • Relatively bug free in my experiences. I can't think of any time I have encountered one.
  • Free to play, as I mentioned before. Nothing even remotely "pay to win" about it.
  • The developer is constantly churning out new updates with tweaks, fixes, and additional content.
  • Just by playing you will occasionally be rewarded with new skins for clothing and weapons. You can buy more or sell the ones you have or just trade them. At any time you can switch between your equipped skins and your actual items' appearances.
Cons:
  • Starting out can be more than a little rough sometimes. You might find yourself constantly dying before you can really get on your feet and it usually comes down to luck.
  • In singleplayer it is a little to easy to get your hands on military weapons and ammo. On servers not so much as there are usually other players already around the spawns to compete with.
  • Zombies pose very little threat once you reach a certain point.
  • Zombies cannot leave specified areas. For example if you are in a city and you leave the zombies will only chase you so far before just stopping at the edge of their boundaries. If I remember correctly this was done to increase overall game performance but I could be remembering wrong. Either way it makes areas outside of where zombies spawn completely empty outside of the occasional wildlife. On singleplayer there is little threat outside of cities but in multiplayer there is still always the looming threat of other players.
  • Guns are purely "point and shoot" with no bullet drop or physics if that matters to you. I personally do not mind as much.
Overall it's a good game that keeps getting better. Singleplayer is a good bit of fun but it's more fun to play with friends in my experience. Best of all it's totally free unless you want to drop a little money for some completely optional stuff.
