I went into this Early Access game made by a development studio i had not heard of unsure about its content and a bit skeptical about its quality, but soon after I began playing all these doubts were put to rest. I suddenly found myself deeply submerged into the game and all it has to offer. Legends of Eisenwald is a true strategic RPG game that skillfully combines the heroic elements of old-school role-playing with tactical turn-based combat and presented in a medieval setting filled with unique legends and folklore.
In this game players will create their hero from a selection of three initial classes and then recruit a small army to travel throughout the realm fulfilling quests, investigating myths and legends, and conquering castles among other things. LoE is still very much Early Access and there will certainly be more changes made. However, this game is entertaining and playable in its current state and offers a lot of nice features.
One of the most interesting features in this game is the concept of changing how the turn-based combat takes place. Unlike other games, Legends of Eisenwald has decided to remove movement points from combat in order to streamline it and make it more dynamic. I like knowing that one strategic movement or action can ultimately determine the outcome of a battle regardless of strength or numbers. Of course, there are lots of weapons, items, and spells typical to any RPG game that will also aid your army in battle. There is also an upgrade tree for improving your units as they gain experience along the way. The user interface is minimal and easy to use. Gameplay speed can be adjusted and there is an option to auto-play battles at any time. The developers have even included a level editor that will allow more content to be added by the community.
Being Early Access also means that the game still has a few drawbacks though. There are still a few bugs in the game so I recommend leaving auto-save enabled or save your game often. The game includes a function to send error reports and crashes directly to the developers when a bug is encountered. However, this is also somewhat buggy and does not always work as intended. Also, the game still lacks the lustrious shine that a finished product has. While the artwork and graphics are very nice and full of detail, there is still no "wow" factor when it comes to battle animations. There is a ton of lore in this game that is scripted well, but the english translation is not very good and can be confusing to read at times. One would think that this would have been picked up and sorted out through the beta testing community but currently it has not. Some voice acting would also enhance this game tremendously, but i'm not sure it is even being considered. Still, this game is an overall delight and it will definitely improve before its final release.

Legends of Eisenwald is an entertaining game overall and considering its still in Early Access beta there is still a strong possibility that the game will be even better upon completion. While it still needs a lot of polishing and there are still a few scattered bugs in the coding, I still enjoyed it tremendously and would recommend it to fellow strategy/RPG gaming fans. With the right adjustments and improvements this game could become an instant classic.
