It's a fun game with excellent Xbox 360 controls. I completed last mission and 96% of the main story in about 46 hours. A lot of that was just attacking Uruks for fun . The game ran smoothly on my system and there were no noticable bugs.

I do wish the human slaves in the game had more than just one version. I must have freed that guy 100 times!

This game is superb. The combat gets kinda boring after a while, also its kinda easy to fight a horde of orc and take no dmg. The story is nice and interesting, but too repetetive. Not worth the full price IMO. If you are after the Story game can be finished within few hours. 100% the game takes 60hours or less. Yet not really a challenging game

Steam ate my lengthy review without actually posting it so here's the quick summary:

I wanted to enjoy this game, but a combination of tedious combat that's really no more than a glorified quick time event, frequently sloppy controls, and the randomness introduced by the nemesis system (specifically captains frequently wandering into me during missions making them extra frustrating and sometimes near impossible) resulted in me spending more of my hours with this game ready to throw my controller out the window rather than actually having fun.

The open world portion is a joke, the two explorable areas are relatively small and boring with bleak landscapes and copy paste ruins. The story includes some interesting elements from the simarillion, but appears to be cut short (the last two boss fights are so easy they feel completely out of place).

Overall, while I enjoyed parts of the game, there were more parts I did not and the lack of interesting things to do outside of endlessly slaughtering orcs means I can't honestly recommend this game at the asking price.

Thesis statement: This game gets an 8/10 and a glowing recommendation from me.

I'd recommend waiting for a sale, but that's because I'm cheap. It's honestly worth full price if this kind of game interests you, though it does have its major flaws, mainly with the story. The ending is very rushed, and if you read other steam reviews you might know that the final boss is nothing more than a QTE; which, if you ask me, was incredibly dissappointing. I noticed a few plot holes here and there, and it honestly did get in the way of immersion; but the saving grace is with the nemesis system. Any time that I felt like the game was getting too repetitive, a new enemy was thrown my way that required me to use my brain and find a new way to bring him down. Not only that, but if I ever felt like I was getting sucked out of the story, I would be killed by an uruk and develop a personal vendetta against him; making it all the more satisfying when I sliced his head from his body, executioner-style.

Definitely a great game, regardless, and the pros for this game far outweigh the cons. Buy it, play it, and have fun.

Already finished the main campaign. Thankfully, there's 3 more campaigns that come with the DLC.

The gameplay has ups and downs. Combat is incredibly satisfying and really makes you feel like a badass. The wall climbing gets really annoying. You'll find yourself constantly climbing on crap you never meant to or jumping off walls and alerting a whole camp of Uruk. At first I was upset with the map size, then I learned there's 2 maps, both of which are very well made.

Don't let the beginning grind turn you off, this is necessary to learn the game since things can get pretty complicated, especially when you start messing with the politics of Sauron's army. So satisfying.

The main story started out really amazing and emotional, but the ending is totally rushed. The final battle is against 2 of the most powerful forces in Mordor and they're fricken QTE events. It's anti-climatic and very dissapointing.

Still, the game is so much fun and I can't wait to weild the One Ring and fight Sauron in the DLC.

Great game. Takes my favorite aspects from Assassin's Creed, adds a great combat system and perks/abilities that make killing orcs so much fun. Very immersive story and bosses. Great voice acting, and a nice soundtrack. If you pay attention to the lore as well, it can immerse you. If you just wander around it can be boring at times otherwise it's great. ☆☆☆☆☆ 5/5

Don't play for the story. Play for the enjoyment of slaying hordes of orcs and looking stylish while doing it.
Seriously though, something about the way you fight is very satisfying and if running around Mordor and Nurnen gracefully slashing at every orc and beast you see sounds like fun, then don't hesitate on buying this game. If you are looking for a more in-depth LOTR game to live out your adventure fantasies of exploring Middle Earth and completing a diverse array of activities and battles, I would wait for a sale and still probably pass on this one.

I'll sum this one up in a haiku:

Killing stuff is fun,
but when that stuff gets bigger,
the game won't change much.

Honestly, a very good game, story is quite sparse and feels a little like it was put together in an afternoon, but, as I've said, killing stuff is fun. At first, getting used to the gameplay is slightly challenging for like five minutes, but very soon your avatar is extremely OP, and although mindless killing is surprisingly cathartic, one does tire very soon.

The orc ranking mechanic is actually a nice touch and I did enjoy the branding feature to raise my own army but not enough to salvage a mediocre game.
Still pretty fun. Would rate about an 8...

Out of 16. I would recommend only if it's in a sale, really.

In the 24 hours that I played this game, I beat the campaign and completed a substantial amount of side content. I don't believe I touched any of the DLC content. I played it exclusively with a gamepad.

Shadow Of Mordor is a game that starts very strong and slowly wanes in quality. On PC it's a technical accomplishment, the game looks gorgeous and runs like a dream on my high end PC, thanks to a broad selection of graphical settings.

Have you played an Arkham game? Then you've played Shadow Of Mordor. The gameplay is a mixture of open combat and stealth takedowns, both of which are almost entirely cloned from the Rocksteady Batman games. The only differences are minor improvements: SoM allows you to run while crouched, to perform brutalisation attacks which terrify nearby enemies, and to drain health and energy from vulnerable enemies. It also lets you to include archery in your combos without losing your hit streak, which makes for a much more lenient hitstreak system than Arkham Knight.

Early on, Shadow Of Mordor is a lot of fun. You're free to roam around the flat, desolate plains of the black lands and hunt enemy captains, who can be spotted from a long distance using this game's version of Detective Mode. The combat mostly consists of mashing X towards your chosen target, and then pressing A to hop over them when they try to guard or attack, but this becomes difficult over time. Each hit landed on you drains your energy, and if you don't manage to kill your target you're left to either flee (which often means catching a crossbow bolt in the spine) or to die in the attempt, which means your target gets a promotion and will be harder to kill next time.

As intended, the Nemesis system encourages you to develop a personal rivalry with these randomly generated Uruks. Some of these fights were surprisingly challenging and required me to think strategically before I attacked, often interrogating orcs for information on my target and then baiting them to places where I could exploit their weaknesses. That aspect of the game is what people in other reviews have praised, and it deserves applause. It's a good first implementation of a very promising idea.

Sadly it all becomes rather pointless once you start gaining XP and unlocking abilities. The Shadow of Mordor skill tree has the opposite problem of the Arkham Knight skill tree: instead of having 100 useless upgrades, it has roughly 20 game-breakingly useful ones. I think I can narrow down the problem to three really bad options: the ability to take a hit without losing your hit streak, the ability to stun enemies by jumping over them, and the ability to spend your hitstreak multiple times.

With these I could jump into a group of powerful Uruks, leap over one, quickly kill him and then spend that killstreak to effortlessly kill two more. After you unlock these abilities, there's no more tension, no more strategy, no more use for intelligence and planning, no more investment in your nemesis. Everyone and everything becomes laughably pathetic compared to your skillset. It's disgustingly easy and, after the initial fun of being overpowered wears off, dreadfully boring.

You'd hope the game would ramp up the difficulty to keep up with your new skills, but it never does. You remain overpowered for the rest of the campaign. The introduction of "Branding" as a late game ability only exacerbates the problem. What was once a fun adventure, suddenly becomes a repetitive slog through dirt brown levels. The game has 4 boss fights, and each of them showcase the limitations of Arkham-style combat as you repeat your most effective combo against endless goons and wait for the QTE button prompt that hurts the boss. It's horribly disappointing.

The story has received a fair bit of praise, and I'm not sure why. In spite of paying attention to the dialogue and doing a lot of side missions, I honestly have no idea what happened in the end. My characters motivation was never clear: as a "gravewalker" he talks a lot about ending his curse and being "at rest" with his murdered family, but his existence doesn't seem particularly torturous, and he enjoys using his new undead abilities to pursue bloody revenge. Ostensibly the villain of the story is The Black Hand, but what exactly that is never gets clarified. In the last act of the story this problem reaches a fever pitch, where I found myself doing things without any context as to why they were being done and exactly what they symbolised. It's a frantic, hurried mess.

This game has no difficulty settings, nor any potential for modding that might make it more difficult. Some people might recommend that you play with self-imposed restrictions, and I imagine that it might be fun to play the entire game without spending upgrade points, but I don't feel tempted to replay Shadow Of Mordor just to find out, nor I do want to play any of the DLC I got as part of the GOTY package. The lack of challenge is a huge problem, and no amount of graphical fidelity can make up for it.

I bought this game for £10 during a sale, and it's currently available for £30. I'm going to recommend it based on the fun I had in the first 12 hours, but I'd discourage people from purchasing it at full price unless they absolutely love the Arkham games and don't have a problem with games that fail to challenge them. I think this game is sadly over-rated, I bought it based on the hype and while I agree that the Nemesis system is a great idea it only remains compelling for as long as the game is difficult, which isn't long at all.

It's fun.
If you like this type of beat-em-up (or whatever) style game then pick up the GOTY edition during the holiday or summer sale. Some advice for fun: Just do the main quest line until after you get to the second area and gain the ability to mind control orcs.

I beat the main campaign at around 37 hours having done almost all of the side quests and messed around for a good while just killing and/or marking orcs for fun. It controls well.

The combat system is fluid and great to behold (being based on the same system as Batman) and the options for tackling the open world are huge; from brainwashing an ork captain to attack his superior to teleport-executing a sentry from 100s feet away.

Viceral, solid entertainment and the kind of game I pick up not to make further progress or level up, but simply because it's fun. I can spend ages just hunting for large groups of orks to jump into the middle of and dispatch without taking a hit; lobbing one through a camp fire, skewering another through the throat, leaping over another to stun them before making their head explode - all the while effortlessly parrying and ducking.

Great fun and an excellent title to show off your graphics processor!

Downloaded on Steam sale and started playing less than 5 days ago, it's consumed my life. PC master race is valid.. this game just looks and plays so much better and fluid on my rig than on the 360, all detail level up. And it's so much fun too, just as much as the Batman trilogy of games.

So glad i bought this on sale, that's why i'm fully Steam now rather than consoles.

This game is quality, real quality.

The graphics are beautiful, the characterisation is excellent (especially of the orc chieftains and even the grunts), the architecture of the orc strongholds and scenery in general is outstanding but these are actually second to the gameplay.

The fighting is its main strength and boy what a strength. When you combine your ninja abilities with tailoring your planned attack against a nemesis or just a top dog on the to-do list, this is so good and I mean really good. Especially when you get rumbled and have to make a sharp exit.

The only detracting factor for me was that I found the game a little easy when you're powered up and found most fun and excitement at lower levels.

That minor criticism aside this is still a 9/10

Well worth getting.

Great game overall, decent story. Some of the best combat I've seen in a game in terms of entertainment value. I could slice up orcs all day, and I have. Most of my hours were put into the main story, the DLC is sort of meh in comparison but still worth a few hours. Get this on sale and you won't regret it.

This is great game, the combat is fun but it takes time to gets the skills to make it so. I played 4 or 5 Story Missions getting my ♥♥♥ kicked so I started to make side missions and it made a big difference. The story took a lot of time to get insteresting for me but maybe is why because I played side missions for about 8 hrs xD, still felt it was a little short.

COMBAT:
The combat was great but in the start is basically smashing the X and Y buttons but then you get the skills and if you don't use them and just keep smashing you're gonna have a bad time, and you'll feel like a badass for killing them with many techniques.

BOSS FIGHTS:
The weren't many of them (besides the obvious fights with the warchiefs), many of them were meh but there were some pretty good ones.

NEMESIS SYSTEM:
The Nemesis System is really interesting and for me it succeeds in making you hate the Uruks when they kill you many times and they get Power and you feel the satisfaction of killing them. But I got to admit it was kinda annoying sometimes having to get information from the Uruks.

LEVEL DESIGN:
The map I got to say was kinda disappointing, It felt very same at times and only certain areas had room for strategizing, and talking about the map there were certain wall where you could get kinda stuck, you have to climb down and then climb up again.

RESUME:
For me this game was great, the story was good and the combat excellent. It is worth every penny because I did 22 hrs and made 68% and I am planning on playing it again. I would give it an 8/10. The things holding it back were the lacklockster boss fights (not all of them) and the story being kind of weak at times, specially being LOTR related could have been better.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!

Even though the final battles were amazing and felt epic I think they could have been harder and don't even get me started with that freaking final boss battle with the Black Hand of Sauron, it was bullishit. The fact that you were (kinda) the forger of the Rings of Power was pretty awesome because I haven't read the books (and not sure if this is them), only seen the Extended Edition of the LOTR trilogy (like 8 times haha) and it let me seem some of the back story of the forging of the ring and of couse the one ring but still felt Golum was a little bit forced in the story.
