Dev Blog: Hive Villages & Gorrillos

We're back with another progress update! The last week or two has mainly involved tweaks and adjustments all round, starting with the environmental stuff...

Environment

Last week we were unable to take many screenshots due to a problem with the lighting - Sam's spent the week balancing this and it's mostly running nicely now, although water reflection still needs some fixing. Oli's mostly been making minor adjustments to the road terrain, Artery biome foliage and adjustments to the collision on the storm buildings. Other than smaller tweaks and fixes we've finished adding and texturing roof cover awnings...



Plus we now have Hive villages in-game, with their own building types:





At this point we've finalized most of Kenshi's creatures in game now, this week we finished animating and adding in the Gorrillo:



Next up we'll be working on another new 'scary' biome and the new GUI player map (the first section we'll be releasing in our next update is shown in the rectangle area):



Industry
Programming-wise, we've mostly been fixing bugs and balancing, however this week Maykol's almost finished with the crafting bench update. The changes for the latest include saving partial used items for crafting, improving the layout so the item names appear properly, adding an image of the item and changing the item's crafting requirement to the specific item.

As a new enemy for farmers, we've also added pest AI for Swamp Raptors to destroy and eat crops - these walking trash cans will eat just about anything, from rotting corpses to cotton plants!



... Better keep a close eye on your crops ;)


FAQ note: You should still be able to import your characters and tech into the new update, however you won't be able to import buildings. Release date still TBA.

Dev Blog: Map UI

What have we be working on lately?  First up...

Road cutting

Over the last week we've been cutting roads into the landscape for the soon-to-be-released section of the new world. In order to make the road look natural, like it actual belongs in it's environment, it needs to be leveled, deepened and given embankments. The map below shows the road system we have so far: the dark area shows the whole world being made, the inner box shows the sample world that we'll be releasing first - this will be a similar size to the current map used in Kenshi.

We've also made some general alterations to the landscape such as changing the foliage types and distributions, and adding two new hive villages.



Stuff!
The new big bad world is gonna need a lot of new content to fill it, right? New biomes are great and all, but not without actual interactable items within it. So, we've modeled some lil' bits to steal from Kenshian hoarders, skins for leather making, farmable resources and actual tools - so hopefully when we add the mechanics for it in the future, gone will be the days when you have to hack away at a stone mine with an imaginary pick axe like some kinda chump.



Character editor

The character editor now includes different sub races with their relative attributes and stat bonuses. We now have three different sub races for the hivers, plus for the humans, we have two types: Scorchlanders (AKA Sundemons) and Greenlanders. Including the Skeletons and Shek, all our races are now complete (in case anybody was wondering what happened to the Stenn we had featured in our concept art from last year, they're no longer a planned race).



Sexy map window
We've revamped the map window! This week we've finished adding new marker icons for towns, villages, outposts, nests etc, plus a marker for the player's position. Icon colouring will show whether they're allies, enemies or neutral to the player's faction. We've also got zoom in/ out with zoom level based information, basically this means that the amount of markers shown depends on the zoom level.



Terrain system

We've carried out a few minor fixes to the terrain system and shadow system. Not only should the new terrain system now run a little faster than the old one, but view distance has also been improved. This means distant horizons now have more detail, plus it  fixes the disappearing terrain bug:





Other bits...

- Externalized the text's colors used in game and some other stuff so now they can be modded by the players.
- Created a tool for automatic LODs creation for the meshes to improve the drawing performance of distant objects.
- General bug fixing.
- Added more interior layout designs for building variations
- Fixed the keyboard keys to change floor. (Pg Up/Down)
- Swimming! Zomg!

Features

Freeform gameplay in a seamless game world stretching over 400 square kilometers. The game will never seek to limit you or restrict your personal play style.
Custom design as many characters as you want and build up a whole squad to fight for you.
Original take on the RTS-RPG hybrid genre. No "hero" characters with artificially stronger stats than everybody else- Every character and NPC you meet is potentially an equal, and has a name, a life.

Dynamic, ever changing world. Support or hinder whoever you wish, or keep to yourself, the world won't stop moving. This is not just a "game", you are living and surviving in a simulated world.
Absolutely no Level-scaling. The world does not level up along with you, and the shops don't change their inventory to only items matching your level. At the start of the game almost everyone will be stronger than you, and survival will always be a struggle.
Realistic medical system that affects gameplay. A character with a wounded leg will limp or crawl and slow the party down, wounded arms means you must use your sword one-handed or not at all. Lose an eye and it will affect your field of vision. Blood loss means you can pass out, and the blood will attract predators. Exhaustion affects performance and is increased by equipment weight, weather, blood loss and thirst. Severed limbs will need expensive robotic replacements.
Intelligent AI that allows for characters to reason and work towards long-term goals and desires. Squads work together and carry their wounded to safety. Characters can be setup to take care of micromanagement for you.
Aid or oppose the various factions in the world while striving for the strength and wealth necessary to simply survive in the harsh desert.
Independently developed with no design influences, or alterations dictated by men in gray suits who have never played a game before in their lives.

虽然,游戏的开发周期很长.而且更新很慢.
不过按照游戏的全景来看.还是相当不错的(我是说自由的城镇,派系,丰富的角色属性,各种事件)

只是就目前而言,只能建造自己的小城,搜集配方.当然,还要面对恼人的BUG.
不过我是不介意,买来挂更新的(虽然很多人都说这是"有生之年"),毕竟开发者的coding水平确实不高(说不高是因为糟糕的path finding sys,不过什么东西一动态起来就很烦人),主要的侧重方向是艺术设计和概念引入(这游戏拿来截图确实非常合适,而且战斗的概念也是其他很多游戏没有的,你见过哪个游戏战斗的即时程度这么高的?----所以,也不能说DEV们的开发水平不高,只是遇到的瓶颈没有写在BLOG上,还有就是有些待完善的内容没有直接加到测试版本里边去)

不过,需要提醒那些想入的同学,这游戏的上手难度不亚于Gnomoria,自己建造的城镇需要任务指派,战斗不能聚团----敌人会AOE你.还有就是这个游戏用了Ogre开发,所以,DEV们要解决的BUG很多,你游戏里会遇到的BUG也会很多(重点是玩开发版本1~2小时就能怀档)

嘛,以上都是废话.我就是觉得这个游戏从艺术设定到概念上都很帅.(总觉得有一种盲目崇拜生化危机的感觉XD)

Hour 1: Ugh.. man... this one might be a refund

Hour 2: Yah... this is silly, running around in a low res desert, wierd glitches, just ain't a good game....

Hour 3: I mean.. this is silly, running from more bandits, scrapping stuff...

Hour 5: I've got to keep this unit together while they mine, I'll have my auxillaries patrolling,

Hour 10: Jeez? It's been a whole RL day of this? This.. wierdly horrible game... wierdly.. amazing...

Hour 20: My outpost lives on the edge of the sands and death, traders come now and then, but overall we maintain neutral relations

Hour 25: I hope nobody visits me RL today, so that I don't get interrupted as my settlement flourishes in the wastlands.



There you go. It's a tough start. It's an ugly start. It's a painful start. But every inch after that is pure glory.

If you ever loved squad based rpg, tactical fighting, (think semi-baldergate-esque) well this takes it and throws in crafting, slavery, factions, squads, crafting, and it looks like a whole lot more in the future. I understand that development has been slow on this game, so if you are not okay with Bugs / Early Access, then hold on for now. There are definitely bugs. Some of them F stuff up. None of them have stopped my constantly growing love/enjoyment of this game.

AFAIK there is no story of any sort yet, it's left completely open world, open ended, create your own story.

-So this is my review for Kenshi. I have played 57 hours and I can say (sadly) that right now, that's probably how far you're gonna go, there's not enough content yet. However, that doesn't mean it's a bad game, Kenshi is a great game that shows you how life is hard ¬¬ at the start but after a few hours you can see the progress and it gets cooler and cooler as the time passes.
-If you want to buy Kenshi as soon as possible: You'll have a lot of well spent hours after you get the hang of it.
-If you want to buy a full game: Wait patiently. They are working really hard and I'm sure that there will be at least 4 times more content by the end of next year.
-Slow development CAN'T be used as a negative trait, because Kenshi producers are not a big company like Ubisoft or EA, in fact they're only 6 ! (here's proof http://lofigames.com/about/about-us/ )
Also, if you think that a game this creative and complex can be easily made, programming is not as easy as you think,
One of my professors once said: "Developing a game is the programmer's biggest challenge"

Conclusion: If you want to see kenshi growing and have a lot of entertainment, buy it, you won't regret it.
If you want to buy a full game, keep an eye on the updates and wait until there's enough content for you.
Oh, I almost forgot, you can download a demo on kenshi's website. I don't know how much content is there, but it's probably enough to convince you into buying (or not).

This game is in Early Access. It is NOT finished. Anything I say may, and most likely will, be changed as development continues. MANY OF THE BUGS I LISTED WITHIN THE CONS HAVE BEEN PATCHED. DO NOT LET THE ONES I LISTED RUIN THIS GAME FOR YOU, THEY TEND TO BE QUITE RARE. EVEN WITH THEM THIS GAME IS STILL AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE AND WAS VERY ENJOYABLE.

*TL;DR at the bottom of this review*

Kenshi. This game is brutal. I seriously had more moments in this game where I wanted to yell at it for being so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hard, yet if you look on my profile it's currently marked as my favorite game. The reasoning behind that is simple, this game offers 0 in the way of hand holding. If you want a good, long, tutorial that explains every single detail to you in a nice format then Kenshi is not your game. Wiki? Don't bother, honestly it kinda ruins the fun of this game. Kenshi is one of the few games where I can say that I never watched a single tutorial, and yet I felt like by 40 hours I knew some pretty advance things in the way of base building and combat tatics. This game will suck you in, it'll FORCE you to learn the game. You'll change your tatics, your starting locations, your ordering in what you need, the way you simply play the game will evolve as you learn, as the game makes you learn. I loved it. Every second of it. Even when I wanted to scream at my computer, I still couldn't help but love this game for what it is. With that said, pro's and con's time.

Pros
- The devs care. If you EVER run into an issue within the game, you can post in the discussions and I bet you $100 that atleast one of the admins or mods will respond.
- Many different playstyles. This game can be an RTS, a squad based rp, a city builder, it can be so, so much.
- Landscape is amazing, and the next update will overhaul this. The biomes, textures, and pretty much everything about the look of this game is pretty amazing.
- Combat system is nice, isn't perfect, but it's very nice none the less.
- Medical system is also really cool. Got hit in the leg? You're limping your way back to town now, bud.
- Base building is some of the best i've seen. The job system and resouce refining is overall very good for its current state. It has some issues, but that'll be seen in the cons.
- Trading system is simple and works, though I found a few exploits
- Farming system is simple but very effective, some bugs will be disscussed in cons
- Factions are pretty diverse in armor, items, etc. Cannibals are really fun, some issues with factions in the cons.
- Smithing and crafting are really simple but work pretty well. Could be more complex or diffucult, but it's still fun.
- Training system, once again, very simple. Not much could be improved here, it works very well and theres not a whole bunch you can do to change it.


Cons
- Medical system is lacking. It's way more simple than I think it should be.
- Combat can get boring very quickly as it's more stat based than anything else.
- There are items within the game that are simply better than any other item. I remember at one point samuri armor or whatever it was called was simply the best you could get. For me this kinda ruined the feel of being able to have so many different build paths, each to their own. Be super slow but super tanky, be super fast with TONS of damage, but super squishy, etc.
- Floating trees, enemies not spawning, falling through world. These are somewhat rare bugs, but they do happen. Remember, it's an early access game.
- Combat system is buggy in some cases. Weapons can hit or miss when they don't appear they did, sometimes your character appears to have his/her weapon equiped but...doesn't use it?... It's like the models there but the hitboxes arn't? Wierd.
- Base building. 99% of my bugs are here. I'll be making a list for this one.
1.- Sometimes you can place a wall down, and even though it allowed you to place it your units simply cannot reach it to build.
2.- There was an old bug where building the tier 3 walls would crash you game if you placed many of them at once.
3.- Some gates, when placed, would never lock/unlock. You could never open them or close them.
4.- Some buildings can be built on slight hills, and yet it'll let you build it while your units cannot get into them
5.- Some buildings, once built, would be unable to open or go up the stairs.
THERE ARE MANY BUGS, I AM SIMPLY LISTING THE MAJOR ONES THAT KINDA RUINED THE GAME FOR ME DURING BASE BUILDING. REMEMBER, MOST OF THE GAMEBREAKING BUGS ARE RARE AND WILL MOST LIKELY ONLY HAPPEN TO YOU ONCE OR TWICE, NOTHING A QUICK LOAD BACK TO A CHECKPOINT FROM 5 MINUTES AGO WON'T FIX.


TL;DR
This game is great. It's hard as steel to learn, but amazingly fun once you do. You will not suceed on your first try, nor your second or third. It'll take time, but once you do it is AMAZING. I reccommend this game to anyone who is willing to put up with a few bugs for an RTS, Squad-based RP, City Builder game, all meshed into one.

For an Early Access game, I would recommend you pick it up. You will not be dissappointed.

I would gladly recommend this game. It has a few bugs and such. But they're working on it. If the game gets updated to what they want it to be. I would give this game a fat 8,3 It's still in Early Alpha though. However. This game is really rough and you need to put a good time in it to become a fine combatmaster.
