Heart of Gold Release Date & Preview: Gild

Darkest greetings Underlord,

Another few weeks have passed and it’s time to look once more into the murky primordial depths that is Heart of Gold. This time we’re going to investigate the new spell, Gild, and take another look at the Sentinel, the new defence.

We’ve also got the continuation of our previous short story, as well as the announcement you’ve all been waiting for! So be prepared to delve once more into the land of Phaestus!

Heart of Gold Release Date
Let’s not dilly-dally around! We’re happy to announce that Heart of Gold will be joining your Steam libraries on the 27th of May - that’s just a week from now!

We know the delay last month was disappointing for many of you, but it has proven to be very fruitful, with more features and polish being poured into the bubbling cauldron of creation. We hope you’ll all enjoy the expansion when it releases!

The Sentinel
If you remember back to our very first Heart of Gold preview those many months ago, we introduced the Sentinel, a new defence that will be gracing your Veins of Evil in the Heart of Gold expansion.

These golden statues will emerge from their sarcophagi once triggered by your Hand of Evil, or by a nearby enemy, ready to stand toe to toe with your foes. Their forms makes them immune to the common necessities of living minions, such as food and sleep, but they do demand a hefty sum at payday. Let’s hope your coffers are brimming! Being non-fleshy, they also can’t be healed by conventional magic - only by gold itself, which is where the Gild spell comes in!

New Spell: Gild
Weaving arcane magics is of course a doddle for one as powerful as you. So it’s no surprise that you already have a new trick up your sleeve: Gild is a brand new spell that will automatically become available once you’ve unlocked the Sentinel, or the as yet unannounced Colossus.

https://youtu.be/FarlSl_l-wA

Gild will serve you well in supporting your Sentinels, as it will expedite the process of healing them. Unlike normal spells it doesn’t cost any mana, but instead requires gold from your Vault.

Gild will take 500 gold directly from your Vault and drop it on the highlighted unit. For those wealth-focussed minions, this will simply serve as an extra bonus to their payday, and make them very happy. However, for Sentinels and the Colossus, it will patch up the broken plates of their armour, and heal them for a significant amount. (They can also be healed simply by dropping piles of gold onto them.)

Gild is certainly a must-have ability for supporting your front-line golden warriors, but it’ll also serve as an excellent way to make those particularly sensitive minions in your army happy with your rulership. Simply find one who’s unhappy via the Creature tab, and cast Gild on them!

Short Story: The Aureate Artisan
It seems you’ve been enjoying our short stories thus far, and are eager to devour more of our delicious lore surrounding Heart of Gold. We’re certainly not going to disappoint this week, as we continue the story of the stalwart artisan, Gidro Brunnsen, as he journeys deeper into the land of Phaestus.

Delve into his precious little mind and explore his backstory, before you ruin his future in Heart of Gold! Here’s a brief excerpt - if you want to read the whole thing, check out its thread on our forums.

Gidro waited. And waited. And began to wonder if he was the victim of yet another prank. A twinkle caught his eye, then the rock face in front of him began to glow. It glowed brighter and brighter, until Gidro swore the sun itself was rising inside the cavern. He shielded his eyes. There was a metallic ring, and the light receded.

Heart of Gold preview: A Constructive Review

Darkest greetings Underlord,

It’s been a little over a week since our reveal of the new Titan mechanics in patch 1.4, and we’re sure you must be salivating at the prospect of getting your hands on that and the Heart of Gold expansion.

Today we’re going to look at one of the new Aspects being introduced in Heart of Gold - the Aureate Monolith, we also have a new short story for you. But first we have an unfortunate announcement regarding the release date.

The Bad News

In the Heart of Gold announcement post we stated that Heart of Gold would be releasing this month. However, based on the current state of Heart of Gold we don’t believe it will be ready for the original target. As such we are pushing the release back to May.

We know that this news will be disappointing to the many of you who are excited to see Heart of Gold grace your Steam libraries - we’ve seen regular calls from you for a clear and set release date.

So far we have tried to avoid being specific with our release dates on all content since release, as we feel that announcing specific dates will lead to greater disappointment if we decide that upcoming content requires more work. As a general principle we try to stick to the “done when it’s done” philosophy of development, and when circumstances have forced us away from this it has proven extremely damaging.

The good news is that this delay will give us time to further develop and polish all the content coming in Heart of Gold. It will give us another session with Richard Ridings to record more voice-over for the mentor, and give us more time with other third parties to deliver on areas such as cinematics, translation and more. It’ll also give us the chance to integrate, test and polish more features internally and make sure the campaign stands out as the best WFTO experience yet!

New Construct: Aureate Monolith

https://youtu.be/D00-7rBcNIo

A glimmering totem of awesome power, the Aureate Monolith is a powerful construct that will certainly help you keep your coffers well stocked. Friends and foes foolish enough to fall unconscious within it’s influence will never awaken again, trapped forever as golden statues.

The Aureate Monolith is a new construct that will be slotting neatly into the Veins at the end of the neutral tree. It occupies a unique role of enhancing the result of combat by instantly turning fallen friends and foes into golden statues to be mined. It’s also capable of stealing gold directly from the earth, statues, or even your rivals.

Once placed an Aureate Monolith will project a small field around itself; any unit that is rendered unconscious in this field is instantly turned into a gold statue. Setting up killzones with Aureate Monoliths and Bombards, or other defences, will certainly provide a useful source of income.

When clicked the Aureate Monolith will draw in all gold within its radius and deposit it within your Vaults. This includes gold from wall tiles, statues, piles and even gold from enemy Vaults! Stick one of these next to your enemy’s Vaults and watch all their shiny treasures disappear from their possession. However, once the Monolith has drawn in all the surrounding gold, it will explode.

The Aureate Monolith is positioned to be used as both a defensive and offensive tool if you want to turn over a frightful profit when facing down an enemy.

Short Story: The Aureate Artisan

We know how much you loved our previous short story that released alongside the Sentinel Preview, so we thought we'd once again dive into the world of Kairos and explore the adventures of Gidro, a particularly unfortunate dwarf who is currently making his way to the southern Phaestian border.

To save space we're going to preview the story here, but if you want to read the full version then head on over to it's thread on the forum!

The gold dust swirled in front of him. He wobbled, his eyes watering in the heat, and squinted through the blinding orange glow. Steadying himself, he focused hard and watched the golden dust whoosh away down the tunnel and out of sight.

Gidro put one foot gingerly in front of the other, and tried not to look over the edge of the road ... at the bottomless pit of lava-coloured doom. Dwarves were never meant to scale such heights. How could anyone live in this god-forsaken land? No wonder he’d never heard of Phaestus - it was nothing but a volcanic ruin!

Read the full story on our forums!

Decorate your Dungeon

Given the subject of this week’s teaser we felt that we should remind you of a little known feature in WFTO: decorative statues! We originally introduced this upon fan request when we implemented the Blood Money spell, but we feel it will have special relevance within the Heart of Gold expansion.

To turn your golden statues into permanent fixtures with which to showcase your domination, simply cast Lightning on any golden statue within your dungeon. As part of patch 1.4 we’re adding bases to these statues to better differentiate them from the ones you want melted down for scrap!

That covers our teaser for this week. We’ll be back in the near future for more previews, so keep your eyes peeled and don’t forget to sign up to our newsletter to make sure you never miss an update!

Tired of invading dungeons? It's time you build your own!

Do you feel you are in a slump? Monotonously disembowelling evil guys in endless quests for gold and a slightly better pair of boots? You are starting to wonder... are heroics really your calling? Welcome to the War for the Overworld!

War for the Overworld is a Dungeon Management Game that employs your favourite aspects of the RTS and God Game genres. You play an all-powerful, malevolent Underlord, long banished to the Aether. With unrivalled dark power and an insatiable desire for bloody conquest, you will arise once more, and reclaim your realm!

In your absence, the Underworld lost its way. It became feeble and afraid of the Empire of the Overworld, which grew strong and boldly comfortable in its quiet retirement from evil-slaying. Carve out your dungeon from the soil and stones of the Underworld, and build dozens of unique rooms to attract a myriad of creatures to your halls to work and fight for you.

In addition to your faithful followers, you have destructive spells and powerful rituals to cast upon any unsuspecting goodly Hero (or rival Underlord) who dares to breach your unhallowed halls. With your unmatched dark powers and mighty army of bloodthirsty minions, you are ready for your War for the Overworld!

Key Features

  • Build Your Dungeon - Excavate and build your dungeon beneath the earth of the Overworld. Design it’s layout as you see fit, creating an underground fortress filled with a wide variety of rooms, each with a unique use and purpose.

  • Evil Is Back - Play as an Underlord who has awakened from a deep slumber after countless years drifting in the Aether. This realm hosts a variety of enemies — both Heroes and Underlords will stand in your path as you fight for dominance of the Overworld

  • Veins of Evil - Choose from over 60 rooms, spells, potions, rituals, defences and constructs in the Veins of Evil as you progress through the game. There are a plethora of possible Vein combinations you can use to conquer the Overworld. Create your own unique flavour of evil!

  • Fortify Your Domain - Build a wide variety of defences within your walls to defend against — and destroy — those who seek to invade your domain.

  • Cast Wicked Spells - Call down unholy magic to strengthen your dungeon, route enemy forces, flood corridors with Micropiglets, or simply turn a meddlesome Hero into a geyser of giblets.

  • Unleash Devastating Rituals - Punish your foes or empower your own forces with game-changing Rituals that can do anything from raising an undead army, to instantly fortifying your entire dungeon.

  • Command Powerful Minions - Over 20 minions await your call, and will gladly work and fight under your banner... if you provide them with all the creature comforts they demand.

  • Conquer the Overworld - Play through a feature-length campaign, facing off against the Emperor of the Overworld as you fight for complete supremacy in the Realm of Kairos

  • Destroy Your Rivals - Take the fight to your rival Underlords in Skirmish or Multiplayer matches with up to four players.

  • Challenge Ruthless AI - Team up with a friend or fly solo and challenge devastatingly sophisticated AI Opponents in Skirmish or Multiplayer!

  • Shape the Underworld - Create entirely new Skirmish, Scenario, Sandbox and Multiplayer levels in the Map Editor and share them with other Underlords via Steam Workshop!

  • Test Your Mettle - Run the gauntlet of the prototype Survival mode and see if you can top the high score against waves of enemies!

I have been playing this on and off since early beta [really more of an alpha really] and I am still loving it. If you ever liked dungeon keeper, [the real one, not that mobile pile of crud], then just get this game!
Campaign is alright, I enjoyed but its skirmish that I really enjoyed, and now with the ability to make your own maps, or download ones others have made …… hours of enjoyment.

Brings up a lot of memories of the days of DK1 and DK2. However as fun as it is, there seem to be lacking a charm that dk2 has with its creatures. Every creature was more unique and impactful.

Good game nevertheless and great hearing the same narrator voice again.

Much better than Dungeons 2. Much more to work with and much more satisfying so far. I enjoy the faster game play and the variety so far. ^^

Edit: So I made it to the end of campain, hopefully it comes out with the next part of the story D:! But, it is very enjoyable, much better than Dungeons 2. Lots to work with and almost reminds me of Warcraft except underground with unlimited resources. I would say it's for both players who like hard core RTS and can be for players who are more casual and less hardcore. But with how the system is it might be a little harder for players who don't understand what rushing is or the slow people who like to gather and defend. Because defences are a little harder to manage since i could just blow up your walls and go around when you place traps or spam beast/gnarlings at your door. And to add you cripple your mana pool which is much better than traps in my opinion.

Pros:
Plenty to work with, many ways you could play and different ways to rush your opponent. It can become chaotic though and it's pretty challenging especially since you have to think about how you want to expand and to do it fast because you do leave yourself open for attack. It's challenging and it is possible to completely cripple someone on here.

Cons:
Limited defences, and fairly small amount of magic use. Laggy, and slightly buggy especially when there is waaaay too much action, like level 12. I crashed once and lagged majority of the time during that stage. So far I only crashed twice but other than that it runs pretty smoothly but lags hard when there's too much in one spot.

This is the second time that I've gone back to this game and it's much better then the first so perhaps with a bit more support. War of the overworld will do well but right now it's still a buggy mess and...They are released paid DLC without fixing said bugs. If you buy this game, be aware of bugs but if you can get past them it is a solid game.

A True Disappointment

I cannot for the life of me fathom how it has taken the developers years to produce this terrible game. What disappoints me is that I supported the game from the beginning and feel I've been patient over the years with its bugs and faults. But over 2 years on and it's still a complete mess.

It's impossible to list everything that's wrong with the game, I actually tried but my review was too long for steam, so if that doesn't tell you enough then by all means buy it and see for yourself...If I had to choose one thing that got to me the most, it would be the animation. I mean they haven't even tried, the characters can walk and perform a basic attack, and that's more or less the extent of it.

I can only reach the conclusion that the developers have used the money paid in by its supporters and ensured that they have been given decent wages with lots of perks, because it is clear that very little of the years they have had to develop this game has actually been spent doing so. To top it off, I have seen that they have the audacity to release an exanpsion to the game! The game is utterly and laughably incomplete, it's a joke and I would under all circumstances not advise anybody to purchase this game, your money will not be well spent and any hopes that it will be efficiently used to improve the game is unforeseeable. I would accept a refund in a heartbeat, following the progress and seeing the end result has been a complete waste of my time.

Save your money, play Dungeon Keeper again, it's a much better game that was developed a decade before this one was.

Refreshing to have a game by actually devoted and competent Developers.

War for the Overworld is indeed a modern Dungeon Keeper, unlike the travesty mobile garbage that EA spewed forth seeking quick unearned cash.

It channels the spirit of Bullfrog back from the desiccated corpse in EA's droppings and Molyneux's sundered reputation.

The game is fun in and of its own as well as being continuously improved. Reward these actually care about your purchase developers and yourself by adding this game to your stable.

Great game. Especially fun if you like the Dungeon Keeper series. It felt like "Dungeon Keeper 3" to me, which I really consider a compliment!

Pro's
  • Really brings you back to the good old days, playing the bad guy for once instead!
  • Very original strategy game, trying to attract creatures based on certain rooms
  • Takes many good ideas from the Dungeon Keeper series and improved on them or made quality-of-life improvements

Cons
  • Creature spawning mechanics and dictating which creatures you get are two things I still don't understand. Certain rooms attract certain creatures, but which ones spawn and how many you can get max etc. confused me all the way up to the end
  • There's no "priority list" like in games such at the Settlers where you can force certain actions to have priority over other. For example where to bring defeated monsters (to the crypt, or the prison for.. other uses? :D ).
  • It felt easier than the Dungeon Keeper series. Then again I was younger when I played that so it could've been due to that, too.

I would've loved if the game had even more rooms and "forces" you to decide on a certain build, like focussing on sorcery, invest heavily into beasts, conversion of enemies, traps & alchemy, or just raw muscle power via the training room. Right now you can do everything really well and I often ended up trying to challenge myself by picking one.

All in all, an awesome game!

I would recommend it but barely. There are a lot of annoying bugs and a few gamebreaking bugs. Fps drop is bad but playable ( still annoying ). It is closest thing to dungeon keeper out there but it is way less smooth and AI is much worse. But as a dungeon keeper fan I still think it was worth the 30euros that I spent.

First, i bought the game for the multiplayer part. But i can't play bigger maps over LAN. While loading the map the client will crash to the main menu.

But if you want to play a dungeon keeper like game for the singleplayer part you should buy the game.

edit: After A few hours of playing Single Player i can say, that WFTO feels like a Dungeon Keeper clone. Which I like... very much.

When multiplayer will work with the large maps it could be one of my favorites.

Was debating pulling the trigger on this one for a long time and finally did so. I heard that the release was rough and so I gave it some time to get fixed but with the Doom wait wiping me out, I needed something new.

In a nutshell, game is amazing if you enjoyed DK2. It's not perfect, but the devs are extremely active and dedicated even now and there is always new content and modes coming out. Plenty to do and see even now.

If you can get around the downsides like mediocre ai, a few performance issues and one or two overtuned or frustrating missions, highly recommended.

When War for the Overworld was released it was a mess with crashes, stuttering, bugs and performance issues. Over time the game has been patched, updated and stabilized to the point you can play it without any frustration from the technical side.

The gameplay itself is, well, a Dungeon Keeper clone. In this management game you are tasked with building a dungeon, attract evil minions and eventually send them to destroy the forces of good. It is a decent game, nothing that will blow you away but it can be very fun at times.

I would like to state that my whole review will be extremely biased, offensive and discriminative against game types, publishers and developers so if you become easily offended please do not read this review. But I believe the hard-core gamers will understand me even if they will not agree with me.
First: I don’t think that there will be ever any middle level or above Dungeon Keeper (DK) fun that will be pleased with this game. You know that for most of us, our scariest nightmare is either the developer or the game itself to be bought by the company gamEs for retArts (gEAy games). It is usually means either the death of the series, or the idea, or the product or the any original thing in that production or the producer group. We are already not expecting any creative or exotic or extreme ideas or games from a company who only focuses on sales thus only produces football, basketball and f. king racing games that have no atmosphere, no story, no emotion, no idea, no intelligence, for shosers. Yes these people are not gamers they are definite anti-social shosers who are not able to pick a ball and play at their garden, (or they can be minors but again same brain age) whatever… Hence we were not expecting anything that can satisfy us from the gEAy or any company controlled by gEAy as a sequel of DK, or Black and White (BW). That company is created for rounded games and for rounded people to kick so no offense for them.
Second: On the other hand, you emerged from nothing in order to revive a cult game. Yes DK is a cult game with no similar and especially the first one was not designed for everyone. With the music, difficulty, ideas, strategies… it was unique.
- It was far serious than the DK2
- Even the names of the spells and the narrator were the part of the dark atmosphere
- Game was not too short and there were strategic options on the map.
- Blood-gore level was far more higher
- The player and its dark army was the evil part however was not the strongest, there were characters like Avatar who can take your whole horde down at least 3 times.
- The game was difficult. It was not possible to finish the game in few days.
- The map and the ongoing story were far more darker and had a perfect atmosphere
- Music were dark and suitable to the environment
- The creatures were giving the feeling of the intelligence
- Even there were conflicts between some creatures such as wizards and vampires, bile demons and skeletons...etc. so it was difficult to organise the dungeon.
- There were many details for captives, it was required different procedures to make them ghost, skeleton, vampire.. etc.
- There were more torture machines and screams than the WAR for Overword and this was the main concept of the game so F… you.
- Was not automatically finishing the level when you win the map
Third: Yes DK2 was different. It has not got some of the above characteristics however it had some other things that made it acceptable as a sequel and successful for fanatics like me.
- This time we had black humour and the deep darkness of the game was a bit broken by the jokes and short clips.
- However the gore was there with more colourful wars, aggressive atmosphere and action.
- The music was gone crazy. It was best experience I ever had with intelligence system that changes the music with increasing aggression in the game. The music was sometimes the war atmosphere itself. Many times forced me to possess and join to the bathe with them.
- Ok spells were not mystical and powerful like DK… No plague, no armaggedon, no shield.. but still they were colourful and functional. Yes they really lack when you compare with DK but yes as long as you can have bile demons behind you and go to battle as a dark knight or dark angel aside with horned reaper…. Yes still acceptable
- Horned reaper become an exceptional creature/character with a call function but hey that was fun. It was amazing to feel that artificial intelligence of heroes make you feel their fear they felt against horned reaper.
- The game was not short again. She story was more colourful and rich. There were lots of levels with various difficulties.
- Narrator was more active bit funny but was not NPC of the game who intends be the secret antagonist in the game.
- Was not automatically finishing the level when you win the map
- The king with two blades and stone guardians were epic at the end of the game. And it was a real feeling of shame when the game ended. We all wanted and desired for more.
- Still we were the evil side there were no “corrupted king” that yells as “kill me hahaha take the flesh on me set me free because developers are bunch of story f…ing unintelligent midiots”
Fourth: Ok we all know about copyright issues, difficulties of being an independent company, trying to develop something on a heritage of a good game etc. However If you are going to use the name “War for the Overworld” it means you have come up with something that can really be a continuation of DK games with higher quality and more offerings. Otherwise you can change the name of the game as “Dungeons” do not claim anything from the DK heritage, make a funny and rubbish game like this than we never blame you.
On War for the Overworld
- We haven’t see any war above the ground. That name was intended for that purpose, you remember? DK3 was planned to be the story of rising over the ground from the dungeons… Even the funny game “Dungeons 2” made it with a way which combines Warcraft 3 and DK2, but you… nope sorry…
- Game was ridiculously short.
- Other underlords and their jokes were disgusting.
- The creatures… Yes you have to offer new ones I can completely understand. And a succubus was a good substitute for the mistress. And ogre was a good idea. Beast master was different but not functional. But what the f… is a Chunder? Do you think that what you placed a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ troll in game and make it fart like a bile demon it will become a substitute for both of them? It is not even a Bileroll or Trol Demon.
- Yes it became really fancy to summon a vampire and to feed them. Necromancers were good too and that ghouls may replace skeletons. But sorry you still lack of black knights and dark angels (or something that can be substitute of them)
- Bile demons and horned reaper were signature creatures. I understand that you cannot replace them easily with something else. But you had chance to reference them in game. They were the atmosphere of DK and DK2. Not even a easter egg … f.. you!
- Titans…. No, sorry. They are neither unique nor add something to the gameplay or the atmosphere. Neither scary nor have a character.
- Music? F… you! What music?
- Story? F… you! What story? “the story of evil king that emerges suddenly and explodes all you dungeon and a traitor narrator voice”…. wow
- Atmosphere? F… you! What darkness? What aggression?... none of them were available in this game.
- That torture chambers are just a disappointment. You are the disappointment…
- Spells… F… you!
- Traps… I hope you someone sticks that blade lotus in your…. Nose.
- … just tell me what do you offer more than DK and DK2?
You see if you are not able to do something good without Peter Douglas Molyneux why in the world you are over forcing your brains to do something that they are not capable of and ruin all of the product, idea? You see that that guy was in same conditions with you and created a game which is called GODUS and with that he may not be trying to revive another legend which is Black and White series however he created something at least as beautiful as B and W and made the fanatics happy.

So please go find and internship somewhere close to the Peter Douglas Molyneux and don’t touch the DK series again.

Yes I've given it a thumbs down but that isn't because the game isn't good. Single player missions, skirmishes and so on are great and I highly recommend this as a single player game... The reason for the thumbs down is that there is practically ZERO online players... After many times of trying to host a game, only ONCE have I ever actually had someone join. I would happily join somebody elses game but there are NEVER any games to join.. Usually I just sit there for 15-20 minutes waiting for nothing... Real shame as single player is very good and the one time I actually managed to play online it ran perfectly with no lag and was thoroughly enjoyable too.... Such a shame...

This is the dungeon keeper clone that we've been waiting for!
War for the Overworld is an attempt at creating a modern Dungeon Keeper. For those who are not familiar with Dungeon Keeper, it was a game released in 1997, where you played an evil dungeon overlord. You would build a dungeon with different rooms that attracted different creature types, and you would use those to fight the heroes of the land and rival dungeons. Controls were indirect, you could not give orders to individual creatures, but you could pick them up and move them about, and you could use other means to make your creatures go where you wanted them to go, but unlike a regular RTS, you could not give direct orders. You could also not recruit specific creatures, but instead creatures would be drawn to your dungeon based on what was in it. War for the Overworld does not change any of this. At its core, it's basically Dungeon Keeper with a fresh coat of paint.
Several attempts have been made in the past to make a "modern Dungeon Keeper", but most of them have, quite frankly, not been very good. As this game is so similar to Dungeon Keeper, there will be a lot of comparisons between the two.

Graphics & Sound
The graphics in War for the Overworld is actually quite good for an indie game. The models are detailed enough, and the textures are also relatively detailed. It won't rival the latest AAA games, but as long as you don't expect that, it won't disappoint. The game also has a very cohesive art style, nothing looks out of place, despite the different creatures looking radically different from each other. One thing I would complain about is the game being a bit too dark. It's not a major issue, and a dungeon should be dark, but some more light would have made the game look more pleasing.
The sound felt a bit weak. Nothing had much impact, and you don't get enough feedback from the sound to really feel like you're doing things. It's nothing game breaking, but it is one of the areas in which the game could stand to be improved.

Story
The story in this game is nothing to write home about. You're awoken and told about the emperor of the land, and that you should go and kill him. There's a bit more to it, but that's basically all you need to know. The story is basically just an excuse for "go kill good guys".
Where Dungeon Keeper 1 played up the contrast between the good guys and the bad guys (that is, you and your creatures) for comedic effect, War for the Overworld plays it more straight, similar to how Dungeon Keeper 2 did it. Which one is better is a matter of taste, but I preferred Dungeon Keeper 1. The game is not devoid of humor, but it's not as much of it as in DK1.

Gameplay
As mentioned above, War for the Overworld plays very similar to Dungeon Keeper. Build your dungeon, attract the creatures you want, and then attack. Everything feels a bit faster in War for the Overworld than it did in Dungeon Keeper. Your creatures level up faster in the training room, claiming land feels faster and so on. I would say that this is an improvement. Unlike Dungeon Keeper, where you had to research the "Call to Arms" spell in order to attract your creatures to a certain point on the map, you have access to a similar thing right from the get-go in War for the Overworld.
Going into enemy territory is a bit more dangerous than you might expect. You can't pick up creatures that are not on your territory, so if one is in danger, you'll have to use magic to save it, and hope that it is able to make it out of there on its own. And the game encourages you to use your magic liberally. You have a separate mana pool, and it is refilled quite fast, so using spells in combat is almost a must.
Creatures are also handled differently than in Dungeon Keeper. Now you have two broad categories that can basically be seen as intelligent creatures and animals. Intelligent creatures will be this games counterparts to goblins, warlocks, trolls and so on, while animals will be things like giant spiders and other more animal-like beings. Intelligent creatures requires regular pay, can work in different rooms, and can use your training room. Animals will wander about, and the only rooms they can use is the portal that attracts them (you need to build this one, while the portal that attracts intelligent creatures is already on the map), an arena (this is how you level them up outside of combat, but they are damaged in the process) and the room they get their food from.
If the game has one flaw, it is its difficulty, or lack thereof. While Dungeon Keeper was not a hard game, the only way you would realistically lose in that game was if you ran out of gold, War for the Overworld is even easier, giving you plenty of gold to spend, and far less to spend it on (training creatures, for an example, is free). Gold is used to build new rooms, and when it's payday (at which point all your intelligent creatures will go to the nearest treasury and take some money). Not once during the campaign did it feel like I was running short on cash.

Final thoughts
War for the Overworld is a really good game. It sticks really close to the Dungeon Keeper formula, but does a few things to speed up the gameplay. Is it better than Dungeon Keeper? Well, that's a matter of taste. I would have an easier time recommending this game, but due to nostalgia, I still think I like Dungeon Keeper a bit more. But anyone who wants to play a game like Dungeon Keeper, or who want an interesting take on the RTS genre should check it out. Just beware that the game still has some bugs (nothing game breaking, but they were common enough to be annoying).

Dungeon Keeper was a fantastic game and I applaud WFTO for picking up the gauntlet that had been discarded for far too long.

The game is what you make of it.
Dont expect to be fed Blizzard/Square Enix/EA, boundary pushing extravaganzas.

This is a game made by serious fans of the genre for the enjoyment of everyone.

What's even more commendable is that it is still evolving and being expanded into something more feature rich and polished. The developer has demonstrated a dedication to WFTO and listens to the community.

So yes it does require a few more tweaks to some features, but these minor details dont outweigh what is already there to be enjoyed.

I will be clocking up many more hours and building many more dungeons.

To all you ex-Dungeon Keeper 2 players looking to reignite your love of the game....Buy this game! But beware things are a little different this time.....

At first, I was weary of the deviations from DK2 (of which there are many), and wasn't exactly sure if I liked it or not, but over time, I've come to believe this game is actually an improvement on the original.

Pros:
+Relive DK2 fun in a new and challenging way.
+Map editors
+Great game mechanics (skills trees, mana locking, sanctuarys etc.)
+Multiplayer

Cons:
-Relentless AI (surely this can be toned down?)
-The add crash or glitch (particulary on multiplayer)

The single player is great fun, and a great way to learn how the new game functions. My main grievance is just how relentless the AI is. It really is ridiculously hard sometimes.

Features such as mana locking and skills tree seem annoying at first, but you begin to realise that it's a mechanic that actually makes gameplay far more enjoyable in the long run.

For me the multiplayer is the best (and sometime worst) part of the game. This is the closest I've come to reliving those glory days of LAN'ing DK2 with friends, so I can't recommend this game enough for this reason alone. My main frustration comes from the odd crash when a large battle starts (which lets be honest, was far more regular on the orginal DK2). The game is far less geared toward defence (compared with DK2), so rather than lengthly stalemates, games can be won/lost within half an hour or so.

In short, this game is will delight those familiar with DK2, but will still provide a new challenge with it's tweaking on the mechanics. There are still the odd glitches which need to be ironed out, but these are few and far between, and don't effect the overall enjoyment of the game.

But if you want to play multiplayer and don't want to mess around with your ports then i would wait. You can't host games but you can still join them, might be waiting a while for one to pop up though. Ashame really, hopefully they can come up with a solution soon cause i really want to play it again.

[Review written for 1.3]

Short Review:
Engaging RTS / dungeon management game where you get to play the bad guys.
Negative reviews are primarily concerned with WFTO at launch. Game is fully polished and well-optimised now, which makes for a much more enjoyable experience. Worth the full price, extremely worth during a sale.

(Very) Long Review:

I backed this during the Kickstarter crowdfunding phase, and was an avid fan of DK1 and 2. Bias confirmation confirmed, but this review is as objective as I can make it.

Overview
War for the Overworld is the spiritual successor to the cult hit Dungeon Keeper, a series by Bullfrog (later snapped up by EA - which is why DK3 never. ;_;).
You play as an 'Underlord', a wibbly wobbly non-corporeal being that seals its essence in a Dungeon Core (the room you start with in every game). Lose that and you lose the game; protect it at all costs.
But in order to enact your will (and defend said Core), you gain access to an assortment of rooms,

The Good

- You're the bad guy!

- Very polished. Backers and early buyers remember the... fiasco that was WFTO's launch (although they did explain why it released the way it did, which was understandable); it's come a long way since then. Virtually all bugs have been fixed, many quality-of-life features have been implemented/improved and the optimisation is much better.

- Unique. Although a successor to DK, there's nothing else like this on the market at the moment. WFTO isn't a carbon copy of DK either; it has its own fantasy, creatures and ideas (most notably, Potions and Rituals).

- Build your own Dungeon. One of the major attractions, you can build your Dungeon however you feel like (within the constraints of the map terrain, of course). If you want a massive open-plan ground, meticulously divided rooms full of doorways and corridors, then you can do it. (A more recent addition was Wall prop efficiency; to offset the fact you have less building space, rooms with reinforced walls will operate more effectively.)

- Playstyle variety [outside of the Campaign]. Every game, you'll start with no abilities or rooms unlocked, spending Sins (points) in a three-column Tech Tree to unlock stuff. You can rush for a specific tree's Titan, or you can spread Sins across all three trees. That said, I don't think it's perfect (see below).

- Entertaining. With Richard Ridings as your Mentor (the same VA for the DK Mentor) and the dark, tongue-in-cheek (and occasionally just plain silly) humour, it'll catch you out once in a while. That, with the excellent(ly awful) voice acting for the good guys makes for fun outside of the gameplay.

The Bad

- Hotkeys. Hotkey support was enabled a while back, but the lack of visibility is a significant issue to learn hotkeys, especially if you're trying to micro combat / efficiency. Could easily be fixed by displaying the relevant hotkey in ability tooltips.

- The AI. It's alright, but once you get to grips with the game, it becomes a lot easier to fight against. Also, there's no difficulty mode for the campaign; although the early missions are newbie-friendly, the difficulty curve rises quite significantly, particularly if you're new to this genre.

- Hidden / unexplained mechanics. Following on from the previous point, the game introduces many additional utilities you can make use of. That in and of itself is a good thing; the lack of introduction and usage of them isn't great. There's still a few rituals and potions I never make use of, while others are pretty overpowered for their investment. There are user-written guides that provide in-depth explanations, but it shouldn't really be the place of the community to tell you how something functions in the first place.

- Meta playstyles Lack of depth to Tech Tree. Having tested a defensive strategy against Master AI, I can confirm that defensive strats do indeed work (Avarice + WDs, all I'm saying), though I can't see them being as effective vs players. Nevertheless, Although there are options and optimal choices do vary from map to map, I still feel more could be done to promote tech / build diversity. Possibly passive buffs (and nerfs?) for certain units when you invest into certain trees, or passives that only activate from speccing into multiple trees to complement your playstyle.

- RAM usage. I have 8GB RAM (DDR3, meh clock speed), but on larger maps I will start to lag; it's still playable, but everything goes slower and commands won't always register. For optimal experience you'll want 12 or 16GB, but it's fine on small/medium sized maps.

Conclusion
Congrats for getting this far!
Overall, I would strongly recommend picking this up (especially if it's on sale, but the devs definitely earned the money asked). Many of the negative reviews were released at launch, present issues that have since been addressed in virtually all cases. Most of the bad points are fairly minor, primarily to do with communication and visibility.

Yes, it's not Dungeon Keeper 3; but that's fine. I personally believe it's better that WFTO is its own game, drawing inspiration from DK but not trying to become it.

This game really brings back great memories of Dungeon Keeper 2.

So if you were a fan of the original DK and loved the sequel, this game is for you!

Also, if you remember the DK2 Trailer for DK3, this is technically DK3.

I tried this game back when it was Early Access and it showed some promise. Decided to revisit it after release for another look. Well, I have.

This game is so poorly-optimized as to be unplayable. The UI lags about 2-3 seconds behind your interactions with it. The tutorial level told me to cast the "Call To Arms" spell, which the UI didn't even present to me. (Then a few seconds later, said, "congratulations!" as if I had managed to cast it.) Things like casting a recall spell on a specific minion are virtually impossible, as they move faster than the UI allows you to cast.

Despite setting the game to open fullscreen, every time I run it it draws a huge 1080p-sized window *inbetween* my two monitors. Why would it do that? Why would ever want to play a game that way?

Keyboard keys won't work for scrolling the map. The only way to scroll the map is by sticking the mouse to one edge of it. This might be a setting in the UI, but I didn't want to spend the 26 minutes it would have taken to navigate to the options screen.

In addition to all of that, this isn't Dungeon Keeper 3. It's just an exact clone of Dungeon Keeper II, only very slightly more high-resolution. You might as well just buy DK2 on Gog.com and play it instead.

"It would be a fun game that I would like to play, it's Dungeon Keeper with better graphics, who wouldn't like that? But only IF they can fix the lagging and crashing and disappearing save file... for now I don't seen that happening... so I am not reccomending this game... no! don't buy it."

Updated: After receiving a response from the developer in the forum, it was concluded that my pc did not have the required specs to allow the game to run properly. I really didn't think this game would require such high specs.

So now I have revised my review and changed it to "I would RECOMMEND this game", with the condition that the pc specs need to be high enough (Windows # 64 bit + 8 GB of RAM + decent GPU).

IMO this game is definately fun, I just wish I had a pc that has high enough specs to play it. :)

So, some mixed feelings on this one.

It doesn't drop the ball hard and it had the potential to. There have been a lot of attempts at making games like Dungeon Keeper and many of them failed. War for the Overworld doesn't fail so much as I feel like they could have done more.

Mostly, the campaign is a bit short. Took me 20 hours and a lot of that was me choosing to make things harder for myself than I had to. Ending is a bit weird, but seems like they're setting themselves up for DLC.

I came to this game hoping for something like Dungeon Keeper. I got something like Dungeon Keeper, though not exactly what I expected. The game certainly brought back memories, but is different enough to feel unique and fresh, actually solving a few problems I had with the original Dungeon Keeper game. It's hard not to make the comparison, and for the sake of it I will be trying not to (for a bit).

War for the Overworld is, mechanically, solid, I've not encountered any bugs I remember. The game is not so much; at your leisure as it is at your throat with objectives on some levels, though there are more relaxed ones. It has an unusual style of graphics and some very strange creatures (See the Part Rock-Hammer part Demonized Kirby workshop enthusiast, the Chunder). And such delightful oddities enhance the experience, like being able to turn prisoners into gold statues that you can mine. That sounds like a cheat, but no that's a spell. The pacing of the game itself is reasonable, you're never left with nothing to do, and the times where you feel there's too much is clearly deliberate and in order to provide challenge, which there's a fair amount of, not hugely but enough to at least make you feel like you're not just walking through it. The dialogue from the minions and enemies is quite amusing (May I suggest torturing a dwarf and listening?)

Now in terms of flaws I'll be making direct comparison to Dungeon Keeper, because honestly, it's where my expectations come from.

The three criticisms that aren't just a direct comparison to Dungeon Keeper are:
First; that I don't, in all honesty, feel that evil. Yes there's toture chambers and prisons and YOU CAN TURN PRISONERS INTO MONEY (Did I mention that?) But honestly it's hard to feel like a badass overlord/underlord, when you're taking orders, yes, the guy giving you orders sounds like a deliciously evil warlord, but I'm still taking orders, which is hard to make...well cool. Why can't I be the one who is a deliciously evil warlord?
Second; It's pretty complicated, as a game there are so many things to build, it feels like it's been overcomplicated with all of the buildings of obfuscated uses, and many of them don't feel like they have uses, like the Tavern, which serves cooked food to your minion, but they'll just as easily go off to the Hatchery and eat a micropig live (Which is a lovely touch by counterpoint).
Third; I'm on level 7 and I'm not playing War for the Overworld, I'm not even playing a dungeon management game, I'm playing an RTS where you have no base and are just wandering from crypt to crypt with about 4 necromancers and a buttload of skeletons, raising skeletons from the crypt so I can go raise some more skeletons. I played this level for 15 minutes and got bored of the repetetive nature. It's dull.

My direct comparisons to Dungeon Keeper are pretty simple; it lacks the style of dungeon keeper, it has it's own but it pales by comparison. The animations of things even as simple as a slap with the Hand of Evil seems to lack something by comparison, I can't put my finger on what though, I think the Dungeon Keeper version ultimately just felt like it had more soul in it, like it wasn't ashamed to just be a power fantasy for the player, it didn't need or want a complex plotline; you were evil, and you were doing what evil people love to do: conquer the world!

I think, all in all, most of my criticisms can be summed up in four words: Dungeon Keeper is Better, and it's funny that a game almost two decades old is still one of the best in it's category. But to the point my verdict on this game: It is itself, it's not a copy of Dungeon Keeper, and it does well to establish itself as something new and unique, and it definitely has it's moments of brilliance, but there's a lot of unexceptional stuff in here as well, things I myself don't enjoy.

I struggle to find myself choosing between recommending it and not, I'll put a word in for it; it's good, but I seriously cannot put myself through that crypt level that's just awful.
