Patch 1.2.1 Release Notes

Darkest greetings Underlords,

It's been just 13 days since Patch 1.2 released and we're already pushing out Patch 1.2.1, with over 60 changes in this patch it almost defies the term "Minor".

Before we get into the Patch notes we'd like to thank you all for your continued support and feedback. It's only thanks to your reports and suggestions that we can continue to push out updates at this rate!

Now without further ado here are the notes you're looking for!

Gameplay and Balance Changes

  • Capped the acceleration speed of all units to prevent some fast units having jerky movement

  • It is no longer possible to build constructs on rooms other than shrines

Obey (Spell)
  • Added recast time of 2.5 seconds, this should make it impossible to accidentally cast Obey on the same unit twice

Necromancer (Unit)
  • Sacrificing a Necromancer in a Crypt or to a Vampire ritual will now cause their Ghouls to dismantle

Frost Weaver (Unit)
  • Fixed death VFX to not be an exploding fireball
  • Now has the fly ability and is able to cross over any terrain, excluding lava.
  • Reduced movement animation speed slightly

Eternal (Unit)
  • Fixed death VFX to not be a dying worker
  • Now has the fly ability and is able to cross over any terrain
  • Reduced movement animation speed slightly

Archon (Unit)
  • Now has the fly ability and is able to cross over any terrain
  • Reduced attack range from 3 tiles to 1.5 tiles

Dungeon Core
  • Damage resistance has been removed (it wasn’t actually working)
  • Health increased from 10,000 to 25,000
  • Health regen increased from 55/s to 140/s

Level Changes

Heart Attack (Level 7)
  • Lowered starting level of enemy units from 3 to 2

Belmorne’s Pass (Level 9)
Since the changes in Patch 1.2 the overall difficulty of Belmorne's Pass has been out of line with the rest of the campaign. We've made a major balance pass on this level to bring the difficulty back in line and generally lower the difficulty spike players were encountering here.
  • Fixed missing bridge tile to the East of the map
  • Fixed bridges using the water bridge tileset instead of the chasm bridge tileset
  • You now get 10 minutes before each wave instead of 7.5 minutes
  • Lowered the overall number of units by about 15%
  • Lowered starting level of enemy units from 5 to 4
  • Adjusted the layout to make it easier to find the Gold Shrine
  • Revealed objectives are now visible for 6 seconds instead of 2 seconds

The Kenos (Level 10)
  • Revealed objectives are now visible for 6 seconds instead of 2 seconds

Desperate Power (Level 11)
  • Revealed objectives are now visible for 6 seconds instead of 2 seconds

Subjugation (Level 12)
  • Revealed objectives are now visible for 6 seconds instead of 2 seconds

Equilibrium (Level 13)
  • Revealed objectives are now visible for 6 seconds instead of 2 seconds

UI Changes
  • Tooltip for Enemy prisoners now displays their torture progress in the activity section
  • Prisoners are now slowed like your own units when you hovering over them
  • Ctrl + Page Up, Ctrl + Page Down now adjust the game speed up or down by 5% respectively

Performance Improvements
  • Reduced the performance footprint of the Mira AI player in level 10
  • Fixed several underlying bugs in multiplayer that may have negatively impacted performance

Misc Changes
  • Some minor under the hood changes
  • Several new features added to the pathfinder for more complex pathfinding
  • The “Stay awhile and listen” achievement condition of Level 13 has been reduced to 10 minutes

Bug Fixes
  • Fixed an exception that could potentially prevent the loading of saved games
  • Fixed a crash which would occur upon selling a Prison
  • Fixed a visual issue where the spitroast cannon in the tavern would show a huge decimal number for it’s capacity
  • Fixed an issue where unit shields would suddenly become giant
  • Units will no longer train over level 10 if they were assigned to a barracks by dropping
  • Fixed an issue where the fortify ritual would not correctly fortify walls
  • Fixed an issue where the unlockables screen did not visualise if subitems are unlocked
  • Fixed an issue where the unlockables screen would show top category items as unlocked even if there were locked subitems
  • Fixed an issue where dropping lots of units at once could cause the UI to cease functioning
  • Fixed an issue which caused the Sanctuary to incorrectly display the efficiency of it’s props
  • Fixed a visual issue where defence shields would not show when a rampart was damaged
  • Energy bill balanced
  • Fixed an issue with imprisoned units tooltips where multiple sets of information would display at once
  • Fixed an issue where the minimap would load in after a few seconds of the level
  • Fixed a bug where sacrificing workers would randomly unlock 0, 50 or 100 mana as opposed to 50 consistently
  • Fixed Juggernauts assigned to the wrong unit group by default
  • Fixed a bug where status alert tooltips would not update correctly
  • Fixed a bug where obey would not be castable at correct mana values if the player owned a mana shrine
  • Fixed a bug where prisoners dropped into the spitroast cannon would float forver above the cannon
  • Fixed a bug where the Camera would jump too far if micro-stutter occurs while panning
  • Fixed a bug where in the event of a player not constructing a lair on level 12 all the player’s units would suicide to reach Draven’s lair
  • Fixed incorrect description for the Wooden Door
  • Fixed a typo in the description for besiege
  • Fixed a bug where the launcher splash screen would cut off the WFTO image
  • The manufacturing shrine will now correctly stop playing it’s working animation when not producing defence parts
  • Fixed a highlighting bug on the spirit chamber props
  • Fixed a bug where fighters in the arena would die after loading a save regardless of arena mode
  • Fixed a bug where fighters in the arena would be instantly moved from the arena upon loading a save file
  • Fixed a pathfinding issue where units would attempt to move into the arena even after being moved out
  • Fixed a UI issue where units would be displayed as both level 1 and their correct level in the creatures UI
  • Fixed a few issues with specific VFX not triggering at the correct time
  • Fixed a small number of mistmatching textures
  • Fixed a bug where unlockable themes would not unlock without owning the Founder’s DLC

Future Updates

War for the Overworld is in a state of constant evolution. For the team here at Subterranean Games, this project is a labour of love, and we still feel there is plenty of room to expand the game. With this in mind, we’ll be continuing to patch War for the Overworld for many months to come.

Alongside regular bug fixes and feature improvements, you can also expect to see new content introduced to the game, in the form of both Free Updates and Paid DLC. The world of Kairos has plenty of room for expansion and we can’t wait to explore more of the story.

Planned features include:

  • Survival Mode
  • Basic Map Editor (Which we can improve later!)
  • Spin-off campaign stories
  • And more!

The first Paid DLC will be a short campaign that supplements the story of the original campaign. This DLC will be released later this year and will be free to everyone who purchased the game before the 2nd of May 2015.

Survival Mode

Survival mode will be receiving some improvements with some truly fleshed out features. This DLC will be completely free to everyone, regardless of when you purchase the game and will be released later this year.

Survival Mode will feature:

  • Survival Challenges - Compete against pre-set challenges, or create your own and share them with your friends!
  • Leaderboards - Prove you are the greatest Underlord of our time and climb to the top of the Leaderboards!
  • More Levels - More Survival Levels for you to try your evil hand at!
  • Mutators - Change up the game to make it harder, easier, to just plain weirder through a number of pre-set mutators and even design your own!

みんなが待ってた!あの傑作「Dungeon Keeper」の精神的後継作!ダンジョンを掘り、部屋を配置し、手下を呼び寄せ、罠を配置し敵の勇者や同業者を殺そう!オススメ!不満点はダンジョン構築の自由度がキーパー1ほどじゃないことと、容易く防壁を突破できるので敵の攻撃が厳しく早解きになりがちなこと。

「war for the overworld」はダンジョン運営ゲームの隠れた名作「Dungeon Keeper」の続編として今年の4月steamで発売されました。
当時ダンジョンキーパーを製作していたチームはすでに解散しており続編の製作はほぼ不可能となっていましたがダンジョンキーパーの熱狂的なファン集団がSubterranean Gamesというスタジオを立ち上げ、Kick starterによる資金調達により続編リリースが実現しました。
開発チームにはゲーム開発者以外にマーベルの玩具デザイナーや絵の先生、原子力技術者などが所属していてやる気に満ち溢れているようです : )

TL;DR - One of your minions wants to get off Mr. Bones Wild Ride.

10/10 would not get on.

I could not recommend this game in its' previous release state. However, now I actually can. After its' 1.1 patch, the majority of what this game was missing in its release verison has finally been added.

War for the Overworld, as a game, is...dungeon keeper 3. There really isn't another way to describe it. If Peter Molyneaux and the Bullfrog team were still around today, I feel the game we would have gotten would not be too far off from this. Are there flaws in this game? Obviously. Every game has flaws. But as far as managing to capture the feel of dungeon keeper and make an all-round fun game, this kickstarter title succeeds where higher-budget games such as the Dungeons series failed. With EA making no attempt to actually capitalize on a once great series, and in fact ruining it for a new generation by slamming a free to play business model that shames the series GREATLY (even paying off reviewers EA style couldn't keep dungeon keeper mobile's critic rating up high enough to appear worthwhile), it's nice to see we still have fans of the old game out there who want to see it made new.

Am I rambling a lot on what Dungeon Keeper was? Yep. For those of you unfamiliar with what I'm talking about, this is a game where you manage a...well, dungeon, from the perspective of an evil overlord. Throughout the campaign, rather than being the hero who explores and brings death to dungeons, you build the dungeon and fight back against the good. You can accomplish this through the use of powerful minions as well as various traps and such that your enemy won't (hopefully) see coming, and of course a little bit of god power for good measure (*zap*). You have minimal control over your minions, so this isn't exactly an RTS and it sure as all hell is NOT an actions per minute game - in fact, trying to go all MLG clicky-clicky on this game would likely just hinder you more than anything else. Your control consists of picking minions or imps up and throwing them where you want them to be and...well, hoping they do what you want. You can lay down rally flags to get everyone's attention to a specific spot, but if you try to keep them out for too long you'll end up with a bunch of unhappy minions telling the flag to ♥♥♥♥ off and going to bed. You also have to keep them regularly paid with gold, which handily is also the resource you use for literally everything else. Fail in this aspect, and minions will just pack up shop and leave to go elsewhere.

Map design is what made Dungeon Keeper and, as a result, War for the Overworld, extremely unique. There is not a lot of map when you actually get in - it's just a bunch of dirt, some impenetrable rocks, water, lava, maybe a chasm, and gold in the dirt. Oh, and your central dungeon core. Don't lose that...seriously. You have to dig out your own map, tile by tile, and lay down rooms in areas to correspond with what you want and your minions' needs - a lair to sleep, a slaughterpen to eat, a tavern to provide money for you and make people happy, a barracks to train, etc...and of course the arena where you can have minions fight to the death for no reason outside of entertainment. It appears to entertain the other minions to watch their brethren get slaughtered too...and of course, the other benefit to building your own map is deciding when and where to dig to place down traps and such, and if you happen to sight enemy traps...you can dig around them.

By now you may think this is a twisted, evil game where everything is gruesome and terrible. And you'd be right and wrong. While you do play as evil, this is a very lighthearted game as the original dungeon keeper games were. Featuring awesome voice narration from the original DK's narrator, you'll find yourself often having a lot of fun just from hearing some of the things minions have to say, or the random (but amusing) pop culture references made by the narrator.

And when you're done with the campaign, you'll find it is still very fun to play in skirmish or multiplayer modes. In these modes, you and up to 3 other AI or players will duke it out, each building their own dungeons and attacking one another for no reason other than ♥♥♥♥ you, my ground. Unlike the original dungeon keeper, War for the Overworld actually does a decent job of working properly in skirmish and multiplayer. While it was possible in Dungeon Keeper 2 to do the same, the game just didn't quite feel the same as it was very campaign-oriented. WFTO implements some new systems that help the game to work properly in either situation. There is also sandbox mode where you just build in a big, empty map free of gold or mana issues, and survival mode which is...honestly still being worked on and I have very little experience in it, but it's self explanatory.

Overall, this game is easily worth your $30. Hell, go the extra $10 and get the $40 version just for the soundtrack if nothing else - the soundtrack is pure evil and outstanding and it fits PERFECTLY with a game of this theme. This kickstarted game more than deserves your money (after a rocky launch).

You know... I WANT to love this game. Like most players i came from the old DK series and jumped on WFTO as soon as it was announced. I stuck with it through Early Access waiting for the final release. Now that it has been released and i have played through the campaign i am left with a 'is that it' feeling.

The Campaign levels mostly relied upon rushes, there was none of the patient 'build, probe, attack and assimilate' of the DK series. This was more of a 'build a few rooms, cap out your army then rush'.
Some of the levels required it, you could not beat them otherwise. The lack of thought needed to beat the campaign was a real turn-off for me.

There were so many spells, potions and rituals that i had no need for.
I basically beat the game with just 3 of the available defences (door, bombard and lotus trap), 3 of the spells (heal, lightning and summon imp) and the required Ritual in the last level. That meant that > 75% of the available buffs were unnecessary!
The voice overs were often repeated with machinegun regularity and i wished for a way to turn them off.

It is a lovely game (plagued by stuttering) and i hope the devs can change its course back to what they were clearly aiming for.
At the moment i cannot possibly recommend it either for old DK players or new players.
