Simple game, fun at times, but very difficult most of the time. I've been unable to complete any quest so far, sometimes for my own fault, sometimes because the game spawns you with 2 or 3 enemies in the initial area, and they take most of your health. Worth checking out, but not if you get angry easily.

Hack, Slash, Loot: Not, Very, Good

There have been multiple occasions wherein I have tried to play Hack, Slash, Loot. Both times didn’t last very long… As you can tell by my total play time of an hour. I’m just gonna be straight and say I don’t like this game. But the fact that I’m reviewing it after an hour should be more than enough evidence of that.

The main issues I have with Hack, Slash, Loot stem from the fact that it is based entirely around luck, it’s rather shallow, and frankly it’s just unengaging. Also I wanted to play it more, but it’s now continuously crashing; thus preventing me from even giving the game another chance. It’s almost as if the game knows I’m not fond of it and it’s hiding from further examination!

Crashing aside Hack, Slash, Loot definitely has some cool ideas, but the game’s execution could definitely have used some work. When the game launches, after you’ve taken about five minutes to parse the UI, you can pick from a rather large selection of quests-- these are essentially the game’s ‘campaigns’; and four character classes. The game’s various quests are really just a set of parameters on the random dungeon generation. Apparently the dungeons span multiple floors and also contain bosses but I’ve never lived long enough to see one…

This is because the game pits you off against a nearly unending horde of monsters that do far too much damage, have way too much health, and almost comically out number you. Plus healing items are few and far between due to the random nature of the game’s loot. In the hour I’ve played I’ve probably run through thirty or forty dungeons.

Let that sink in.

My longest run was probably 20 minutes, and I still never made it past the first floor. Hell, I’ve died in the room that I spawned in.

Fighting hordes of powerful enemies can definitely be fun, other games prove this. But Hack, Slash, Loot’s reliance on luck permeates into the combat as well. Even with a 60% chance to hit I find myself missing the majority of my shots. A fight with a single monster can take upwards of ten turns or more, which are spent watching your character and the monster haplessly flail at one another only occasionally connecting. Once you finally land a hit and damage to the monster you have to hope that you roll well... or you’ll find yourself dealing almost no damage, making the fight take even longer.

There’s nothing like missing ten attacks only to land one and deal 2 damage.

The best way I can describe this game is that it feels like a Pen and Paper RPG, like Pathfinder… But without any of the systems that actually allow you to do the cool stuff.

There are no modifiers that help your dice rolls, or give you an edge. It’s just raw randomness.

Most of the time you simply rely on luck, and hope that the five orcs breathing down your neck miss more than you do. Or that you get a good weapon that can deal decent damage. But that only happened to me once, and then I promptly died.

This game definitely has potential. And it’s clearly there under the layers of randomness… But as it stands Hack, Slash, Loot isn’t worth your time.

Long and difficult. Kinda relies on having RNG on your side in the beginning. Id recommend for patient people that love 8-bit art and music style.

This game is flat out broken. Yes, it's a tradition roguelike. Yes, it is somewhat fun to play. The thing is, the RNG is so bad that it's totally unplayable. You can spawn in a room that is legitimately impossible to beat as soon as you start the game. Unless you want to play a game that is all up to chance, avoid this like the plague.

I'm recommending this game on the off chance someone wants to see what god awful game design looks like. If that's what you're after, then this is the game for you.

They call this a roguelike, but it's more like.. uh.. rogueshite?

This game is a fun simple rogue game where death is an experience. You will learn what to do in a random level setup by dying over and over again. Once you know what to do, you will try to outlive the last time you play. After all, simplicty is without a hard learning curve is fun. Trust me, the RNG is a ♥♥♥♥♥, but it effects the enemy as well. A whole lot of misses before either one of you get a hit.
The only turnoff is the price, but wait until it is on sale or get this in a bundle.

Pretty simple fun game.

Not worth full price in my opinion seeing as there are far better games out there that are cheaper.

I agree with all of the negetive posts. I got this game thinking it was a real rogue like. It is a random mess. Some tweaking would fix, I thought the devs might even do that, but no updates. Please buy Pixel Dungeon or Dungeons of Dredmore. I have gotten quite a bit of entertainment out of them.

I bought it for the price of a beer and i got a lot more entertainment out of it than most beers i've had so i'd say it's worth it as long as you're not looking for the next Dredmore.

would reccomend only if you don't mind bad games as long as you can still find enjoyment in them.

Hack, Slash, Loot is a terrible game. The game is completely based on luck and is pure random. I love how I start the game and every room has tons of mobs and I lose almost all of my health as I leave the first few rooms, then I always die after I encounter the next monster. Even if I do somehow get past all the monsters on a level I'm confused on what the objective is and what I'm supposed to do. There's no sort of in game tutorial or hints, when you start the game you are completely lost. The melee character is completely broken, can't survive more than a few turns. Once you start playing a ranged character you can make it a little further, but it's the same thing over and over - wondering around random rooms just trying to find a way out. By the way it took me 30 minutes to figure out I can move to the next floor after I found a rope the size of 3 pixels! The game design is purely flawed, avoid this game at all costs.

This game is fun and has potential, but it's bad. Very very bad. The game does very little to assist the player as you jump from floor to floor trying not to die. I had been enjoying my time until I finally snapped after getting poisoned to death again (drained my hp from 76 down to 2 since there were no healing items), turned on cheat engine 6.4, fixed my hp at 100, only to get stunlocked until I turned my fix off because of the boy king guards that I had wandered into. If a cheat engine adjusted character couldn't make it past those guards, how in the ♥♥♥♥ do you honestly expect a normal player with completely random drops to get past them? This game is not fair in the slightest, no character run is the same at least....in the bad way. You will find many ways of greeting death with some of the most ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t situations you are put into. I want to be able to recommend this but I honestly can't.

Two years ago, I got this game in a bundle. I played it for about six minutes and uninstalled it. First impressions mean a lot in this kind of game, and this was one of the worst.

Simple is not always good. A game needs to offer its players enough options to form strategies against whatever challenges are posed. Otherwise, you're just playing a glorified slot machine. I don't think the folks behind Hack, Slash, Loot understood this because they made a dungeon crawler that has classes with no skills and loot with no inventory.

The game dumps you straight into a cluttered, pixellated menu where you pick your class and your quest, and then get dumped into a crowded, nondescript dungeon. The perspective is a weirdly squished 2D where tiles are twice as wide as they are long, which crams the otherwise pleasant character sprites too close together. As you navigate the random floors and rooms, you'll find items like weapons, armor, potions, and scrolls laying around. Gear can only be swapped with what you already have, with the stat change shown in the corner when you mouse over items. Similarly, consumables are used the moment you pick them up, and their purpose is obfuscated in an annoyingly Nethacky way so you don't know what they'll do for sure until you use them.

These are all corner cases for those times that you're not beset by monsters. HSL is packed to the brim with things that want to kill you, while offering absolutely no tactical options for killing them back besides funnel them through a doorway. While this isn't terribly different from many old-school roguelikes, the distinct lack of healing items or reliable gear upgrades is. Everything appears to be randomized in the extreme, and with no inventory, there's no way to store potions or food until you actually need it. There's not even a guarantee any will appear, because I've definitely had runs end on the first floor because literally no healing options were offered.

Imagine playing Diablo without skills, potions, or inventory, and you get a very basic idea of how flawed HSL is. Streamlined roguelikes are an excellent idea because many of the classics go way too far in their complexity, but this completely overshoots the mark in the opposite direction. Nothing you do in this game will effect whether or not you win, and there's not even any sort of overarching progression system to make losing worthwhile. With all the clever, interesting roguelikes on Steam now, Hack, Slash, Loot is better left forgotten.

像素!复古!Roguelike!

但其实我并不推荐大家去玩这款游戏,即便是对于Roguelike游戏的爱好者也不推荐(别在意我为什么要傲娇点推荐),因为这款游戏过于单纯了。这款游戏的系统是我玩过的Roguelike里最简单的一个,哪怕是几十年前的老古董ASCII图形界面下的那些经典Roguelike游戏都比这个复杂,里面只有攻击、移动、拾取并使用三个动作指令,连背包都没有。角色没有技能和特性的概念,不同职业仅仅是初始数据和初始装备不同,当然后面解锁的要比初始职业强,不过也没什么本质上的区别。这游戏甚至没有等级的概念,角色的强度全靠捡装备和吃卷轴撑,HP也不存在上限,吃药回血被打掉血,剩下多少点就是多少点。攻击命中率和攻击伤害很直白的写在状态框里面,没有闪避点数,攻击数字超百就是必中,最终伤害等于攻击伤害-防御,有弱性加倍有抗性减半,简单粗暴。职业解锁靠过关次数和死亡次数,wiki里有公式,一共30多个职业,解锁第N个职业的公式里面竟然有N的平方项,据计算如果一次也赢不了的话,只要不停死961次就能解锁全部的人物……

简单粗暴本身并不是什么坏事,但这种简单粗暴带来了两个问题,一个是游戏模式单一,虽然每次地图都不一样,但战术是类似的,也就大家最熟悉的卡门卡走廊之类的经典走位法,因为只有普通攻击并没有职业专用战术研究的余地,无非分为远程和近战两类基本模式,能不停玩下去的都是抖M闲人……另外一个问题就是过于看脸,你捡到什么装备全看脸,有些属性比如加速、再生、阴影形态等等非常关键,都没捡到胜率是很低的,而神圣和死灵属性的武器也非常重要,因为这两种属性杀死敌人以后可以回血和加攻击,越早拿到越有利,而且打怪也是看脸,大家都是平砍,没把攻击堆满Miss了能怪谁?

最后对于执意想尝试这游戏的闲人我还有一些非常重要的新手建议:一个是没事千万别去乱开棺材,开棺材虽然有很好的奖励,但80%出怪,而且出的怪还比本层迷宫的要强,经常得不偿失;二是祈祷自己不要中毒,中毒持续时间很长累计伤害无比坑爹,要解毒必须吃药,如果事先在地上没预留药物的话,那么只能祈祷接下来尽快打出药来了……(其实没准备的话差不多可以重开了,因为没有HP上限所以大家平时看到药就吃掉的,所以如果地图里有很多毒攻击的怪物的话必须留意一下);三是开开心心去死吧,死多了就能解锁新人物,解锁新人物了就能更好的通关,我甚至想建议大家先死个十几次解锁亚马逊,亚马逊出生带一把神圣弓会让游戏轻松不少,尤其是任务Mask of the Boy King,里面大量不死生物被神圣弓完克,只有Boss有神圣抗性,在打Boss前换掉就好(X键可以切换副武器,记得捡一把其它属性的弓作为副武器)

游戏简单,鼠标就能完成一切操作。但是系统也因此显得过于单调,不同职业和关卡之间区别不明显,物品也缺乏特色。攻击后有概率增加属性的武器则是刷成就必备,而且穿上以后基本就不会换别的武器用了。

另外一个诟病就是本作的随机性。早期的各种miss真是新手的噩梦。在做成就的时候,遇到怪突然把装备打坏的话会让你很抓狂。

总之,本作对roguelike爱好者或一般玩家来说都不能算是一个好作品。

rougelike的游戏,喜欢这类游戏的朋友一定知道这款,如果你不喜欢随机地城走一步算一步的那种就别试了,画面党也别试了。以前玩mud出来的,这款游戏不容错过,居然在游戏中后方还会显示mud的那些字符,太给力了。

这是一个看脸的游戏
角色只有初始装备和数值上的区别 不存在职业技能和特性 开始游戏后攻击命中 装备 特性 药 属性成长 都是看脸
界面非常简陋 内置的按键提示都不存在 只有点那个online help之后才能找到

简直就像一个对新人不友好的跑团模组 没有人会给你解释和提示
给你简单的背景故事之后就把你丢到游戏里 如果你随手按了new game 那你可能还会花一点时间弄明白你到底是什么人
你好奇的试着操作 发现实际上只有3个指令:移动 攻击 拾取
你开始冒险 你很快发现自己的攻击经常miss 往往一开始的几只怪就会把你揍个半死
你发现药水和卷轴能给你回复 虽然是非常少量的hp
通过反复尝试 你知道了 棺材里虽然能开出装备 但大多数时候是敌人
地上的魔纹具有的是随机效果 运气不好会收获各种属性减脂和属性弱点
宝箱很可能是宝箱怪 虽然打死之后会变成宝箱 但是好烦
按x键可以切换武器 虽然要一回合
有的敌人会烧毁你的装备 有的敌人会把你缴械
死灵属性的攻击杀死敌人有几率能够回复hp
阴影形态虽然可以随意穿墙 并且降低1/4被远程命中和1/2被魔法命中的概率 但同时你自己的远程和魔法命中受到了等值的削弱
等等等等 诸如此类 基本上你做出这些总结的时候已经死了好几回了
如果在20 30年前推出这么一款游戏 那么大家一定趋之若鹜 为了不同的武器装备 和敌人出处的小知识会心一笑 每一个新发现都能兴奋好久
但以现在的眼光来说 这款游戏不合格

For a brief moment I couldn't decide whether this game is just too hard or game design is severely flawed.

Now I've come to a conclusion - this game is VERY flawed. It's pure RNG, even the knowledge you gain by trying to beat it will be countered by incredible randomness.

It doesn't give you a sense of progression, you either get lucky or not.

As of this writing, 49% of the reviews for this game are positive. This is frankly, to me inexplicable as this is the worst game in my library of 90 so far. What makes this game obnoxiously bad, egregiously terrible is that it has surface appeal. It deceives the experienced player of roguelikes into thinking that strategic and thoughtful play will be rewarded if one can intuit the subtle rules of the game. Don't waste your time. There is no depth of gameplay here. For example, you find a potion. Will it hurt you or heal you? It's random. It might give you a permanent defect. Or it might heal you. There is no way to tell unless you drink it. Intelligent decision making in this game amounts to not wasting a precious minute of your life on this cynical trap created by a soulless programmer whose only goal was to part you from your hard earned money. It is one of the most offensively designed games I ever played in my life. I am passionate in my hatred of this game. Good day sir or madam.

Alright, I tried to like this game, I really did. Normally I can get some enjoyment out of rogue-like or rogue-lite games. Hard games are fine. Games like Demon's Souls or Dark Souls? Great fun. But Dark Souls has a design philosophy that makes sense. If you die, it's your own fault. You're punished for your own failures. But this game? It's basically just a coin flip that determines whether you win a fight or not. You're punished for things you have no control over.

I think the biggest point of failure is the lack of a maximum health stat. Sure health is there, but the problem is it is finite, and can only be replenished by picking up a random enchantment from a scroll or potion or what have you. And keep in mind that it's random whether or not you find a scroll and random again whether or not this scroll will heal you. It could even be detrimental and hurt you instead. Basically if you get unlucky and take too much damage in combat? You're hooped. You have no chance. The point of health in most games is to give you a chance to survive even if you get unlucky.

There's additional classes that you can unlock, but the game is so entranced with being obtuse that it doesn't tell you at all how to unlock them. I unlocked one somehow and the game didn't even inform me that I had. I only found out when I returned to the main menu and found another class just sitting there.
