What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Dropzone has been in development for two years and in closed-beta for the past 6 months. We see our launch on Steam Early Access as simply the next stage in the game’s development, widening the number of players (and increasing the number of games to play!) who will be able to play and suggest improvements/additions to the game to make Dropzone the game you’d like to play. In the past 6 months we’ve honed and polished the core gameplay, and established a close relationship with our existing beta players. We look forward to continued iteration while building more ties across the spectrum of our community.

Early Access is the perfect option for us at this point. Our production team loves to iterate, in fact our whole development process is designed for it; for example, we patched every week during CBT, which equated to roughly 25 patches in total. Early Access will be the best way for us to learn how to further improve our game and address the needs and desires of a larger community.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We anticipate that we will be in Early Access for several months as we add and adjust features based on feedback from the community.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Aside from additional content (pilots, gear, maps, and so forth), much of our focus in Early Access will be spent building out additional PvE and competitive play elements of the game based on player feedback at all skill levels (casual, amateur and pro gamers). Ranked Play will be an early addition. While the heart of Dropzone is a competitive 1v1 game, we all want to be able to play with our friends and to explore modes of play that go beyond purely 1v1 competitive play (some of which you will see in the upcoming release). As we learn what players most like, we intend to double down on those areas.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We spent a good amount of time in Closed Beta making sure we could start with a polished core experience. We built a custom engine for Dropzone , the Sparkle Engine (the 3rd game engine this team has built over the years), and we believe the “feel” of the game is excellent. Performance is generally good when settings are adjusted properly for older computers but we need to do a better and more intuitive job of adjusting those settings, including dynamically. There are some areas, such as Crafting and Daily Tournaments, which are functional, but haven’t received what we would consider a final polish pass. We currently have 4 of the 5 planned Classes available with 3 Pilots each, 2 1v1 maps, 1 2v2 map, and 120 types of Gear representing the abilities players can configure. During Early Access, a 5th class will be added to the game, along with more pilots, more gear, Ranked Play, pilot skins and other vanity items that will allow you to customize the look of your game. You can also expect to see features and items suggested by you, our community.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Dropzone was built to be a Free to Play (F2P) game but first we need to get the game and content polished with feedback via Steam’s Early Access program. In Early Access, players have the choice of purchasing two different bundles.
The SQUAD Bundle features a selection of Pilots, Rig Classes and Gear. Furthermore it includes an Exclusive Pilot Skin, Early Access Player Emblem and Vision Tower each never to be available anywhere else. In a future F2P release players will start with significantly fewer pilots and a limited gear selection.
The COMMANDER Bundle adds even more Gear, several Exclusive Items, and all Pilots ever. Both bundles deliver instant access to a huge amount of content and offer exceptional value for players joining the Dropzone community right now.
It’s probable that these bundle contents will cost more once the game is F2P.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“At Sparkypants, we have a special way of developing a game with Dropzone’s scope. When we started development on the game, we had a prototype running within a few weeks. The entire studio would play the game together each morning, a process we creatively call the “Daily Game.” From that play session, we would make a list of things to add, change, remove, and we’d try to get as many of them done for the next day’s Daily Game. This process drove development, kept us seeing the game as players rather than only as developers and encouraged us to create a new “release” every day.

Fast forward to today and we still do a Daily Game and, during Closed Beta, we typically have a new significant release every week. Our existing Closed Beta community has been invaluable in providing feedback and helping us focus development and balance the game. And now it’s time to extend this idea to a larger community of players. We have a saying at Sparky, “It doesn’t mean **** unless it’s in the Daily Game.” Once we’re in Early Access that will be, “It doesn’t mean **** until it’s in the hands of the community.” To make that happen, we may start with occasionally live-streaming the Daily Games (DGs) of select features, pilots, maps, or whatever when they are close to completion, and then build from there.”

Patch Notes Early Access v1661

Gameplay Notes

  • Changes have been made to resigning
    • Drops and Resigns after 10 minutes of gameplay now give full rewards. This scales up linearly from 0 to 10 minutes. This will also count for the Daily Bounty ‘Finish 1 Match’
    • The client will now show a resign pop up when it is mathematically improbable for one player to win. This includes the opponent getting half of all possible points, not enough cores remaining on the map to gain a win, and not enough time to upload cores to win
  • Players can now continue to play Solo modes when a new version of the game is released instead of being forced to patch to the latest version.
  • Infestation
    • Adding extra time between waves as the game goes on. +3 seconds every 5 waves. Up to an additional +20 seconds
    • Fixing mob spawning rules, ensuring that we cannot spawn more of the hardest wave than of the easier waves
    • Core dunks are worth 2000 points instead of 5000 points
    • Increasing hive bucket milestone size by 1 for all player counts, it takes more hives to earn extra events
    • +1 event card per turn starting at waves 15, 30, and 45. (Wave 45 will be 4 event cards every turn)
    • Co-op games will increase the maximum hive count every three waves, instead of every two
    • Co-op games will spawn an extra hive every five waves instead of every four
    • Solo games will spawn an extra hive every 9th wave (in addition to the extra hive every 4th wave)
    • Kamikaze Kavash will now detonate on the reactor
    • Reducing the maximum core bucket milestone size for 4 player, from 6 to 5. (Late game it will only take 5 cores to receive a positive event)
    • Angel of Mercy event chance increased later in the game
    • Reduced Boss Surge event chance later in the game
    • Removed the Repair Malfunction event

Miscellaneous Notes
  • Help text has been added to the Multiplayer Queue window explaining that players can participate in Solo Modes whilst waiting for an opponent in Multiplayer Queue
  • An ‘Enable Intro Cinematic’ option has been added to the Gameplay Tab of the Options Menu
  • Players can now watch Infestation replays (WIP)
  • Players now have the option to “like” replays
  • There is now a search bar in the filter, allowing players to search for specific replays using their Match Code. (Match Codes can be found by selecting a replay – the code is listed under the Watch Match button)
  • Non-critical and user-input VO is now gated by a 10 second timer to avoid excessive VO triggers

Bug Fixes
  • Fixed an issue where the right dropship in a replay would show the incorrect team until the countdown timer started
  • Fixed an issue where the Options Menu could not be closed if the player hit Esc while the resign confirmation pop up was open
  • Fixed an issue where the Watch Menu was displaying Rigs default loadouts rather than the selected loadout
  • Fixed an issue where the speed control bar in the Replay Controls did not scale to 16x FF
  • Fixed an issue where Jovians earned from Level Ups and Daily Bounties were not counting toward the ‘Kingpin’ achievement
  • Fixed another issue regarding bad texture states when navigating between the Player Menu and the Builder Menu
  • Fixed an issue where Atomic Welder was doing damage to allied units
  • Fixed a very rare UI related crash
  • Fixed an issue where certain FX lights were using the wrong quality settings
  • Fixed a crash that could occur if Plutus casted Paradigm Shift on a Tank that was using Palm Rockets on a Vision Tower or Uplink
  • Fixed an issue where Friends Lists information would overlap if enough friends were in a sort listing to produce a scroll bar
  • Fixed an issue where some players were receiving ‘Unable to connect to the internet. Error Type: 2, Error Code:60’ when attempting to launch Dropzone
  • Fixed an issue where Dropzone would not launch if it failed to initialize the default audio device. Now, if Dropzone fails to initialize the default audio device, it will launch with no sound and display an error message

Known Issues
  • There are known issues with words bleeding outside of their bounding boxes for every language other than English. Fixes are on the way
  • Locking observers slots in Custom Matches only works when both slots are empty
  • The Private Match setting only works when the game is already created, so someone can join in-between
  • Hive Link does not have a cast ring around hives to show where the ability can be cast – fix incoming soon
  • The ‘Easy Pickings’ achievement does not count Hives killed by a teammate towards the goal
  • Global Chat does not reflect your changed name until you have restarted the game
