This game is adventure perfection. Amanita are the kings of beautiful, short games like this and Machinarium is surely their crowning glory. The artwork and animation are second to none and the puzzles are sometimes pretty tricky. The soundtrack is great, the story is endearing and it's all wrapped up together in this incredibly detailed, steel world. Would recommend this game to literally anyone.

Machinarium

So.. Machinarium.. This is really one of those games that allready has so many positive reviews that it might not need another one. But here it goes:

Machinarium is set to a universe where there seems to be no humans. Instead there is machines building machines. As you can see from the screenshots posted on the store page of the game, it almost seems like it takes place in a junkyard, where the living machines often are built from scrap metal. Even tho these are machines and don't speak, they have character, and show emotions.

Gameplay & Stroy:

Machinarium follows the old and well known point and click game mechanic. It is a story driven adventure/puzzle game, that has a rather serious story, but manages to add humor to it on several places.

The story captured me from the very first moment that i started playing this. I don't want to ruin the story for those who haven't played this yet, so im not going to cover any part of the story in this review.

As mention above, the characters in Machinarium don't speak, but they show thinking boubles above their head and make noises (an alternative way to give the player hints about what they need to do next). This method, in my opinion works very well.

Puzzles:
I have played many puzzle games and i have to say that for me, this was kind of perfect in terms of difficulty. Many puzzle games tend to become to confusing when they try to make it a big and challenging game. Like having a big area with lots and lots of things to interact with, without a single clue on what to do next. Machinarium manages to give you a lot of different options on what to interact with, but at the same time you get enough hints on what your goal is that you for example knows that you have to do someting with this item, just not what.

Level design:
The levels in Machinarium are great actually. There is a lot of variations and different enviroments through out the game. They also made the levels in a way that you get a feeling of a big living world even outside of the playable areas. You still have to remember that this is a sideview game with limited possibilities of movement. Still, there is depth in the levels, so you can for example walk away and towards the camera.

Nostalgia:
For me these kinds of games gives me some nostalgia from the time around 2001-2006 when i used to play games like these on flash sites all the time. There is something "calming" about sitting there without any stress, and figuring out these sorts of games. Of course Machinarium is more polished, longer and better than most free flash games out there.

Bugs & Crashes:
So far in my review, i've only said positive things about Machinarium. But as many other games before it, Machinarium suffers when it comes to bugs and crashes.

I experienced several times during my playthrough that the games just froze with a black screen. I still could hear the music but i had to close it through task manager and restart it to keep playing.

I also experienced that the game just closed for no apparent reason, and sometimes while playing and i clicked on something, nothing happened in-game.

But since this is a very small game in terms of size, and that it practically doesn't require anything to run, it took me seconds to restart and be back in it.

Conclusion:
Machinarium is a great game, really.

If you like story driven puzzle games i would recommend you to get this.

I am an oldschool point 'n' click addict and I was ready to fall head over heels in love with Machinarium.

It's exactly my kind of game. The artstyle appealed to me most, though. A rough and rusted metropolis serves as the backdrop for adorable, hand drawn robots, in an assortment of quirky shapes and sizes. The story is uniquely depicted in animated thought bubbles: You control Josef, a rickety, humanoid robot with the ability to change his height at will (dragging the mouse up or down) and swallow objects for use later. Josef must traverse the city of Machinarium to save his kidnapped girlfriend, Berta, and defeat the evil Black Cap Brotherhood.

The game certaintly isn't lacking in endearing characters or levels, nor can I fault its puzzles, which are challenging in their own way, and I do love that it includes several mini arcade games within the game for Josef to play. The riddles seem to alternate between the basic "untangle the red and black wires" and borderline bogus, which doesn't bother me personally but might be a turn off for some.

But unfortunately ― although I would love to recommend the game, especially at such a reasonable price ― I cannot bring myself to leave a positive review.

It is extremely fiddly. Any point 'n' click veteran will be familiar with the click on every pixel with an inventory item until something just happens cliché but Machinarium's inventory is difficult to locate because it blends in with the game's black border, so a mouseover where you guess it's supposed to be while solving a riddle doesn't always work. The controls overall are awkward at best and frustrating at worst.

The muted colours make finding items that you can pick up potentially impossible and I generally found myself gliding the mouse across the screen until I discovered something interactable. The game is also never fullscreen, despite having the setting to change it. It's debatable whether the hints even count as hints, but that's a minor complaint compared to some of the aforementioned. As if the fact that Josef's animations when he's short or tall are far too slow. It's cute at first, but it gets annoying real quick.

Finally, the save system DOES. NOT. WORK. If you frequently delete your cookies, use a program such as CCleaner to... well, clean up your computer after use, it will delete your save file and at no point does the game mention this. You have to play this in one sitting, keep backups of save files, or google workarounds for this but you should NOT have to and I refuse to recommend Machinarium because of it, as much as it breaks my heart not to.

tl;dr
short & lovely point 'n' click with some mildly frustrating features that is ultimately ruined by its save system.

It's fun and I love the art so, so very much. Issue? The gameplay. I want to like this game, but I guess it isn't for me. The pouzzles are slow and so cryptice, you could spend an hour and not figure out what you were supposed to do, which is upsetting. There is a really good chance that you will LOVE this game, but I didn't.

Very neat little puzzle-style adventure game. The graphics alone are worth the price of admission, but the atmosphere and story will keep you going to the end. Not as immersive as some other point-and-click adventures, but definitely an enjoyable and timeless game.

This is a fun, cute, if short game. The puzzles you had to solve were very diverse, which I truly enjoyed, and the controls to select objects to interact with were smooth. I especially enjoyed the use of clasic arcade/board games in some of the areas. The arcade game to open the hints journal was a little too hard to work around each time for me, but I was easily able to find the list of hints posted by the creators online.

The real downfall for this game was that the story felt lacking. It had been so long since I purchased this game that I had no idea when I started it (or indeed until more than half-way through the game) why my character cared about this city that I had been thrown out of or the relevance of the girl who only appeared in memories that I had when I left the screen alone for too long.
For me personally, this worked out great because I was looking for a game that I could have running and play for a few seconds at a time to break up some tedious busy-work I needed to get done on my computer. But, the fact that the story was so disengaging and mostly revealed in thought-bubbles in the very last scene might be cause for caution before purchase for someone else. When the story was finally revealed, it felt that that must be the half-way point and now we are getting down to business. Really, there was just one "fix-all-the-issues" scene followed by a get-away scene and that's it.
So, basically, the story could use some reorganization and I would have LOVED to play this for longer, but over-all, a very nicely constructed click-based puzzle game that perfectly suited my purposes of having a game to play while working, and would probably prvide a satisfying few hours of puzzling for someone who played the game without multitasking.

Superb, my new favorite point & Click game.
Its polish as ♥♥♥♥ simply put. There is a mix between point&Click action puzzles and standard table puzzles;
Both of them are amazing, the table style puzzles are challenging and original from my knowledge, I saw some of them as classic, but the rest was fresh. I love the way you are pourring good around you, its simple but it works.
The design is exellent, some shapes ring memory from the Neverhood. Every objects are oddly shaped and cool (the long arcade TV to the round radio). Art is Beautiful and gritty at the same time, from far the lighting looks real o.0
Most of the rooms have different ambient music, it even place a foot inside the experimental genre.

My black spots are ; The game frame dont take advantage of all of my screen, I know the game use a room position into the gameplay, but at least make the big rooms not so small on my screen.
I got lag if I dont tell windows 7 to put the program on front, in the task manager.
The minigame where you must kill all the little red robots have two issues: The control is bad and the red robots tend to get stuck, blocking the player from advancing.
Near the end some of the puzzles get really tricky, mostly due to the expand of the play zone, however at the beginning the play zone is really small so even if the puzzle is tricky, the solution is near your feet.

Nevertheless, anything else; The gameplay, the level design, the music, the visual, the story even if simple... is exellent

And stretchy squashy your lil robot as fast as possible never get ol

Mean Mr. Mustard's short Machinarium review

1) Essential - buy it NOW
2) Recommended - buy it on sale
3) Avoid

Time to complete – 6 hours without using a guide
Played multiplayer? N/A
Worth revisiting? Yes

Best part – A very charming art style and cute character animations elevate this point-and-clicker to a higher plane than it's peers
Worst part – Not a criticism but the puzzles can be fairly challenging and if you choose not to use a guide (which you shouldn't), you may be stumped on some for a while

Machinarium from Amanita Design is one of the best point-and-click adventure games I’ve played. Yet there is almost no text, and the cute robots that inhabit the dirty, rusty city you’ll be exploring communicate exclusively through adorable pictograph speech bubbles. Join Josef the little robot on his journey to save his friend Berta and defeat the nefarious Black Cap Brotherhood.

A beautifully hand-drawn world full of mechanical creatures and robot people is the backdrop to your adventure. Josef is thrown out onto the scrapheap, and you must get him back into the city. Collect items and solve puzzles to find your way forward. You’ll help a lady reunite with her robot dog. You’ll bust out of prison. Most adventure games give you the entire screen to search through to find the correct item to click. Machinarium smartly limits your reach to your own arms, but you can stretch and shrink Josef high and low in order to reach items. Anything you collect, he will open up his head and shove it into his mouth, in an endearingly cute animation.

Other than the limitations I described, this is a fairly standard adventure game. Click a bunch of stuff on different screens, in the correct order. There are no twitchy challenges, though a fair number of puzzles have a fairly lax timed component to them. There are also no major “fail states” that require you to redo minutes of work. You usually only have to retry a few seconds worth of action if you make a mistake. One really cool feature is the hint system. Rather than just click a button, or spend from some limited pool of “points” to get past a difficult puzzle, you play a little Game Boy-style shooter minigame to get a look at the guide. There are no limits to how often you do this. The in-game guide is awesomely illustrated, and you’ll feel good about yourself for having ‘earned’ the hint rather than just giving up. I never had to consult an outside source to proceed in the game. Rather, I immersed myself in the world, and let the game itself give me a gentle nudge through some tricky spots.

The music and sound effects are amazing, as we expect from Amanita Design. Machines clank and buzz strangely, and speakers throughout the city play some hauntingly distorted but still cheerful jazz. Everything you interact with sounds different, in a good way. Each environment you explore has its own soundscape, making the world a pleasure to discover. The soundtrack as a whole has a strange electro-ambient vibe, and I really dig it.
Yet your ears aren’t the only part of you being thoroughly pleasured. The graphics are outstanding. Everything has a hand-drawn, cared-for feel. You sense the love that went into designing this world. You may be moving from static screen to static screen, but that doesn’t mean these scenes are lifeless. Graphical tricks give the world unexpected depth, and on most screens there are objects and characters constantly moving and interacting. The level of detail that went into not just the puzzles, but the space those puzzles inhabit, is really noticeable.

That hand-crafted feel really makes this game stand out in my mind. It is just such a unique experience. I found myself wanting to solve the puzzles not just for the sense of accomplishment, but so I could see what was hidden around the next corner. Some of those puzzles were a little obtuse, and I got quite lost later in the game where the majority of the city is available to you to walk around freely. Minor quibbles that don’t really influence my opinion on this game at all.

Which is to say, you really should play this game. It is a shining example of unique, quirky developers making the game they want to make, without the constraint of publishers or focus groups or shareholders to please. This game stands on its own merits, and doesn’t try to appeal to everyone. The irony is that by being so unique and innovative, it should appeal to everyone. The cute graphics combined with the adorable thought bubble cartoons will stick with you for a long time.

Also, you can get Josef and Berta plushies at the Amanita Design store. I’m trying to convince my wife to let me buy them for our kids. Really, they’re not for me. I mean, they can sit on my desk when the kids aren’t playing with them.

Does not work at all for me with Windows 10 on a new [2015] Asus computer.

Looks like cool art and sounds, but the cursor will not point at the things on the screen, have to find a place some distance from the thing you want to click on, and click on that empty space, if that description makes sense.

Sometimes the cursor will not click on anything at all.

Maybe I am just playing on the "impossible" difficulty level.

Oh, also, won't uninstall entirely. Try to remove, but it remains in my inventory of games, even proudly says that it will stay there, and I will have to reload if I want to [attempt to] play it again in the future. Which I won't.

Maybe the uninstall button is also set to "impossible" level of difficulty.

Most impossibly difficult game I have ever [attempted to] play!

And, of course, Valve will not refund the few dollars I spent on the game, because I waited too long to request a refund. Despite the fact that I bought other games from them, and that I only spent a few minutes on this one before giving up in frustration. And despite the fact that I am not asking for a refund because I changed my mind or didn't like it, I'm asking because it is defective, &/or won't play at all on my machine.

Not good customer service or relations there, guys...

Artistic Score: 9.5/10
Gameplay Score: 9.5/10
Overall Score: 9.5/10

Machinarium is a highly atmospheric point and click sci-fi adventure game. The game's creepy but also eerily beautiful art sets it apart from other games and makes it a totally unique and engrossing experience. The difficulty is well balanced; challenging but completely doable.

Pros:
+Beautiful art that really takes you into another world. The paintings in this game have so much character. Together with the music it feels deeply atmospheric and it's a great experience.
+Nice soundtrack that fits perfectly with the game.
+Excellent gameplay. Great puzzles with the perfect difficulty; challenging enough that I was racking my brains but not impossible. Occasional minigames also enhance the experience.
+A simple story that, through the atmosphere created by the art and music, is told beautifully and seamlessly.

Cons:
-The game doesn't support right click, which would be a really nice way to let the player send items back to the inventory. Right now right clicking yeilds an "about Adobe Flash Player" tab, which slightly cheapens the look of the game, which is so beautiful otherwise.

As a side note it took me about 7 hours to beat the game.

This game is so perfect, so beautiful, that there's no reason why anyone on Earth shouldn't experience it for themselves. I can't stress it enough; this is really one that you have to play to experience.

Finally I could play this game, I've heard a lot of good things about it before. The game is great for people who like point and click adventure games. There is mostly a clue for the solution of the puzzle, just a few moments of "try everything till you get it" but overall puzzles are really good constructed. I'd argue if interaction range was a good idea since we are rejected when an interaction is not available anyway. Wish the game was also playable in higher resolutions but I understand why it is not. I have nothing to say about visuals or the imaginary world of Machinarium, they are both awesome.

Machinarium is a point-and-click adventure game in the old fashion of "click inventory items against everything on screen until it works". You play the role of a tiny little robot dude whose first task is to rebuild his body, having been unceremoniously dumped into a junkyard.

The story is told without any words, instead using the charming artstyle and clever worldbuilding to convey what's happening. It's a risky venture, especially in story-driven games like these, but Machinarium pulls it off very well; Little Robot Dude's attempts to sneak back into the city are easy to follow and very cute.

Some of the puzzles can be somewhat obtuse, as is the norm for adventure games, which may put off some players, but there is a hint system built into every puzzle which lets Dude give his own insight on the solution. For times when this doesn't suffice, a short walkthrough can be unlocked with some skill at a minigame, which will give the player a storybook guide on what to do next. The wordless presentation makes Machniarum a game that can be enjoyed by all-comers of any language, age, or skill with words.

Finally, the Robot Street Band's performance will stay with you forever.

Machinarium is point & click adventure set in beautiful world of robots. Game is not easy. Difficulty is set in a way that even smart people need to think hard to complete game without help. Problems are logical enough and you need to use your imagination a bit. Logic mini game puzzles are probably the hardest part of the game. Some of them take a bit of time to solve. When you solve a problem reward is sense of accomplishment and moving forward in the game. If you know exactly what to do and just walk the walk, Machinarium is about 1.5 hours long. But length of a game is probably about 10 hours if you get stuck a lot and want to solve everything without help (like me). This is a beautiful game that reminds me of the best P&C titles I played for the length of years. I recommend it to everyone who is not afraid to use the gray matter between the ears :-)

Personal rating: "Very Good" = 4/5

PROS:
+ cute story
+ beautiful art style
+ original atmosphere/levels
+ mostly fun puzzles
+ hint/advice system
+ speech bubble communication
+ great soundtrack

CONS:
- UI is a bit clunky sometimes
- simple story & not much replayability
- couple of annoying puzzles

Comment:
I remember playing this game years ago with my dad. Well, he was playing mostly, telling me what to do. Now I played it again and I have to see this game aged really well. The beautiful graphics style coupled with a great soundtrack gives you a great feel right away. There is no talking in this game but you get the whole story line just as easily via speech bubbles. But maybe this is also why some extra effort was not put into making the story and characters more detailed and less flat. Puzzles are kind of cool most of the time although there are some that were just weird to figure out.Overall it is a fantastic game with a couple of flaws which you will forgive because of the unique setting of a robot town. Recommended!

I love this game.
It's fun, it's beautifully drawn, it's more difficult than you think.

Still had a cat in my inventory when I finished the game.

This is super fun! I wished it was a little bit longer, but I think I only paid a couple of dollars for it so it was definitely worth it.

This is a point-and-click puzzle solving game where unlike the most popular FPS games, there aren't enemies to shoot at and you can't die... However, it is still a LOT of fun!

The graphics are for the most part still backgrounds but they are quite beautiful. The character animation that is present I think is very well done.

The soundtrack in this game is really good also and I found myself getting hooked on a few of the songs.

For the most part I found it to be a nice low stress game where I could relax, explore, and solve the various puzzles. I found the puzzles on average to be mildly challenging, with one or two what I'd say was a real challenge. I do consider myself to have excellent puzzle-solving skills and these type of games tend to come easy to me so I'm sure some may find it much more difficult. It will provide you with hints if you do get stuck. My advice to anyone playing this is be VERY observant of whats around you and when the cursor changes to a hand, indicating a "hot" spot.

I think anyone who likes to solve puzzles will enjoy this game.

Gave this a shot because I liked Botanicula, was not disappointed. Good atmosphere, easy-going puzzle game.

If you're looking for a beautiful point-and-click adventure with challenging puzzles and a symbolic story, this is the game you're looking for. The art and music are superb too. My recommendation is to play without any hints. I played it back in 2009 and bought it now, and I'll definitely play it again once I forget how to solve the puzzles.
