Hotfix 2 for X Rebirth 3.61

Here's another hotfix, this time to solve a problem encountered by a few people when trying to load some specific savegames.

Hotfix for X Rebirth 3.61

Since the latest Steam client update, the mouse cursor could get "stuck" in certain situations. We have issued a hotfix to solve this problem in X Rebirth while the Steam developers investigate the underlying cause.

After years the game still didn't become better in my eyes.
This is the worst project that EGOSOFT engaged in.
I hope they do better on different projects.

Sadly this game has been scarred by it's terrible release, which, at the time deserved it.

Currently Beta testing version 4.0. From what i've seen so far.

90% bug free, there are still some bugs that have really annoyed me, (Fighters Clumping together, Remote calling Marine Officers doesn't get his Marines back on board)
But the game hasn't crashed on me since 2.5 and the graphics have had a much welcome overhaul.
Frame Rates have been improved (Still needs work).

The New Features added since 1.0 are staggering, so much has been added that my instruction manual has been left pretty much obselete. It's not the same game you bought during 1.0.
Jump Drives for Skunk, SETA making a return in 4.0. Plus a new dlc coming out.
We are seeing a game that isn't as good as X3, but it's getting there.

The Game stands out in it's own right and Egosoft never leave a game half finished, their reputation for fixing their games long after release is what makes them worth trusting, even after the terrible release.
To those who played it and put it away I recommend you dust it off and give it one more try, whether you like it or not? Talk about it on forums, Egosoft are changing their Minds and you might get what you want eventually; they've already reintroduced SETA after saying it wasn't going to happen.
They're listening to their fans.

It's not really a successor to X3, even though it continues the story about 50 years after where X3 Albion Prelude left off.
Gameplay wise it's a definitive reboot, so if you're looking into more of the same from the X3 games you're probably wrong here.
However, this doesn't mean old X fans can't enjoy the game. And don't worry about the older bad reviews, In the current state (3.61 + Teladi Outpost) it isn't bad at all - just different.
And just like with the old X games, mods fix the things that Egosoft won't or didn't (yet).
The Steam Workshop integration means the mods are easily installed.
Want to get rid of nebulas? Mod. Want to win the conversation and hacking minigame every time? Mod. Automated traders and miners? Mod. Jumpdrive in your ship and not just NPC ships? Mod. Want to see the stats of hireable NPCs without playing the minigame? Mod. And definitely get the "Capital Ships Bridge" mod, it's makes piggy-backing on one of your capital ships much more awesome!
Really, it's fun, in a different way than X3, but still familiar. It's more of a cross-over between Darkstar One (1 upgradable player ship, cockpit view dogfight combat, randomly generated side missions) and X2/3 (build stations, build/capture ships, assign them to tasks, make money the 'economy spreadsheet' style) with some new features thrown in for good measure (giant stations you can land in, NPC hiring, hack/scan/mine-laying drones you can remote control) and some very, very pretty graphics.
If you can get it cheap and like space games, definitely give it a try.

Get it: If you like the X games in spirit (trade build fight think); if you like Freelancer; if you like pretty space graphics; if you want something arcady to feed your flightstick with; if you can get it cheaper (not more than 30€ I'd say, including the Teladi Outpost DLC; I think I paid like 20 € for the bundle and will get about 100 hours out of it, and Egosoft is still working on more updates and DLC)
Don't get it: If you want Borons or Paranids - there're none in the game (yet?); if you want to build a massive, galaxy wide, automated trade empire with dozens of station complexes and hundreds of automated ships (theoretically possible in Rebirth, but takes much more time and effort to build and maintain); if you can't accept that you personally can only fly one (upgradable) ship; if you don't want to try out mods (fun and convenience at least -50% without mods)

*Listens quietly for the sound of nails being hammered into wood* I so wanted to love this game even after having come to the X-universe late but X-Rebirth isn't so much a Rebirth as it is a nail in the coffin. Yes, the Teladi outpost DLC fixed a few things but it doesn't change the fact that Egosoft threw out almost everything good about the X3's and gave us... This.
Pros
The graphics are simply stunning. I cannot deny the vista's are utterly jaw dropping
The music is sweeping and epic
New sector system-In the previous game each 'map' was one sector which had so many stations, ships and jump gates leading to other sectors. The downside to this is that they had a rather definitive edge to them and expanding beyond the default size of a given sector was difficult. In Rebirth they have highways linking regions withing sectors so that they are now exponentially bigger

Cons
The highway system to enable FTL travel between regions means they decided to do away with the SETA drives. Singularity Engine Time Accelerator. In a nutshell, it would speed the game up to a maximum factor of %1000 to allow you to cross even massive sectors rapidly however here your only options to move swiftly are to take the highways, which are fixed and only link between regions one way or to boost your way across at speeds not all that much greater than your normal. However that introduces annother problem:
Boosting drains your shield. Fair enough, in the last game boosting would eat away at your shield but only if you didn't have enough energy cells to power it. In Rebirth your only options are to arrive at a fight late, or with your shield depleated.
Steering is either by joystick (and it doesn't have pre-built profiles so you have to bind everything manualy) or by cursor flight. Either pointing at a spot on the screen and clicking the mouse until you're poiting where you want to go or by moving the mouse around on the screen and it will keep turning that way. Now, for those of us without a joystick this can act as a virtual stick, meaning we don't have to move our mice up and reset them mid-manouver however it also feels difficult and can serve to dull reaction times. This was an option in the previous games but that's where the problem lies. It was an OPTION. Here you have no choice in it.
The Ship. Now, as I recal in the first X games you only had on ship you could be in, fair enough it was a while ago in computing terms and resources were limited however they soon corrected this to the point where you could fly around in just your space suit, a small one man scout ship, bombers, corvettes, frigates, destroyers, carriers or even, if you had balls that clanked as you walked, The Valhalla. A ship so large it can't actually fit through a gate. In Rebirth, you're stuck in one ship. This wouldn't be an issue if the ship were any good but it isn't. From the top:
It's name is the Albion Skunk. I don't know who thought of this but in the previous games it was named the Albion Pride. And no, you can't even change it's text. I might be able to live with it if your co-pilot (more on her in a sec) didn't say it every time you came into dock
The ship computer from previous games makes a comback, I'd gotten used to her and quite liked the announcements she made but here, the only thing more irritating than 'Betty' the computer is Yisha the co-pilot telling Betty to shut up
The speed is not great, made all the worse by the lack of aformentioned SETA drive and the only boost feature eating up your shield
Drones, missiles and weapons are all limited. And you only get one gun... One. You can have a few on your ship at a time but you can only shoot one. Even the samallest, least combat capable scout ships in X3 Albion Prelude have two.
And of course, you are stuck in this one ship. Sure, you can get out and walk on stations but you have to come back to it sooner or later. Or spend the rest of your life running the vents like a rat, trying to make a living out of oddly placed credits and random junk you can sell. Either or. Frankly, I'd choose vent rat

After replaying this after the 3.0 patch, and with a fresher mindset, i feel I can give this game a fairer review.

In a word, X rebirth, is alright. I really wish steam reviews had a better system than a thumbs up or down, because I do not believe this game to be praiseworthy, but neither should it be within the mostly negative on the steam page.

It is not by any means a bad game, but it is not a great one either. I still feel if you are wanting to get into the X series, to start you should play X2: the threat or X3: Terran conflict (or Albion prelude, AP is essentially an expansion for TC anyway) however on its own, X Rebirth stands a good space 4X first person space simulator. It has some nice looking paint, a tutorial that is excellent for teaching new players to the X series (whereas before, the game plonked you into a grand universe, without even controls to do anything, with the exclusion of X3, where there is a flight school, that simply tells you how to move your ship. To start this mission, you must open communications with it, which the game neglets to give you the command to do so)

Many people were also afraid of the bugs when it first came out. Most of the serious bugs have now been squashed, and the game playable, there are still errors that can be easily seen, but thankfully none that impact the gameplay massivly (the worst ive seen is a group of NPC ships getting stuck together). Although I feel that Ego was going for a major shift in gameplay, alienating many fans of the X series. I do not think that this was made to be a Space management game. Trading takes too long, and profits made during runs are often not worth the time. However, I feel that Ego was going for a more, action RPG type game, and tried to blend the X formula into it.

For example, combat is a lot more profitable now, than in previous games. Repairs for your vessel could cost upwards to a few million credits in any previous X game. Here, it should cost less than 100 grand, no matter your hull. This isnt even accounting for the seemingly Hyperinflation that occured during the time of Rebirth, money is no longer measured in the hundreds of thousands, but in up to 4 digits. For example, say I had 5,264,194 credits in my account. Any previous game would show that as 5,264,194, here it is shown as 5.264M. It does not go into detail about exactly how much money you have, which would be necessary in a detailed management game.

The speed of combat, and the changes in the combat system have also been changed to be a lot more faced paced. Another change to make it into a more robust Action game. There have only been a few instances in which the player was actually given a character, however those were really only referenced in the main plot missions, and then it was simply by name most of the time. Here Ren Otani (thats you) is not only given a name, but a voice and a very slight personality. He can walk around on ships, engage in talks with other people, and the player now actually thinks about who it is driving their ship, rather than the mystical being who manifestes as a space suit.


I shall be continuing this review as i get further into the game, but for now, a TLDR section.

X Rebirth, is not worth $40, it is an okay Space sim, with some light space managerial options and a heavy emphases on combat. It is a good game for new players into the X series to try out to get used to the ideas of how a X game operates, before moving onto a previous title if they are intrested in the management and stratergy of those games. But for now, pick up the game on sale (for $15-20 bucks or less), itll be worth your time if you havent tried out the X series and wanted to learn about it, although this game is not an accurate representation of how a X game operates. Although, space exploration is an absolute pain in this game, and areas quickly become generic.
