With the 2.50 Patch the game is now where it should have been when released, that is, really playable, hardly any ruining game bugs.

Now you can start from scratch, earn cash with your long range scanner, get some money for your first little traders (gigurum), make deals with stations, earn reputation through missions, make deals with trader agents to keep station trades updated to your computer and start building your empire. And if you want your fighting rush, on hard difficulty you need to wise up to survive battles against more than a 3 small ships and capital ships are a real challenge (not like before which you could capture with no effort).

Factory building is the most rewarding and polished thing in this game, building your complexes bit by bit, to make huge profits later on (if you do the proper ones in the proper locations obviously, Fusion Reactors anyone!? wink wink)

All the game needs right now is exploiting exploration to a greater extend, add hazardous areas, npc factions with more life, etc. but that is already coming in December it seems, anyways, with a bit more stretch in the end-game, that is, what makes sandbox games interesting (lots things to do aside from the main plot story).

So I can only recommend this game as it is NOW and congratulate for a good job to Egosoft from lifting this one up from the ashes. They made a good engine but the state of release was simply rushed and aweful. Luckily they have managed it well.

Just buy it if you are into space genre, trading, factory building, exploration (later on), huge cap ship fighting, etc..

12 months on since I bought X-rebirth, I fired it up again not having played it in some time. I decided
to just fly around shooting stuff for a change in the secret service missions and was quite surprised at how much fun this was, I would recommend this approach to those who may have given up on this or anyone playing for the first time.
Still think this game was bashed for what it was'ent rather than for what it was. Ive played less entertaining games that got 70% plus scores for a few hours before I got sick of them. And the developers deserve credit for working to improve it despite such damning reviews. There is entertainment to be had here and it is getting better.

Almost a year since its release, X: Rebirth is now playable. Although it shouldn't have been released in it's initial state, the developers have constantly updated the game over the last year to iron-out the bugs and improve it.

Those who already own the game are being given free DLC which will be released in December 2014, make sure you redeem the DLC before Dec as it may not be available for free after that date.

Overall I consider this a good game that has given me hours of enjoyment, not as good as its predecessors, but has a lot more potential for both immersion and modding.

I can finally recommend this game. The Devs have done a lot of hard work to fix many things, and it shows. Many people I have spoken with believe the game has gone from a 1/10 to a 7/10 and counting. The great thing about egosoft is they don't release a game and then forget about it. They constantly add to it and update it over time.

I feel like X-R at release was simply the release of a foundation/framework that was meant to be built upon over time, both by the devs and the modding community. This turned many people off because they expected a completed game with every single bell and whistle they desired. Those bells and whistles were not in at release, but they are here now. Either by the devs or the great modding community.

The devs have fixed almost every bug I've ever heard of/encountered. They have added very nice UI improvements and quality of life features. The mod authors have filled in the gaps with afew nice things, but I wouldn't be surprised if the devs added them to vanilla.

All in all I am excited for the future of the game! I am actually having fun this time around.

After the recent updates X Rebirth has recieved the game is infinately better than it was at release, the graphics are amazing and the gameplay is much better than it was. But my biggest problem with this game compared to the older X games is just the fact that you are limited to one ship, the thing I loved about the older X games is that you can fly basically anything you see whereas in Rebirth you are stuck in the basic corvette class ship. Some people enjoy just jumping into a mammoth destroyer and feeling like a king, it is something that space games rarely deliver on. I like the direction this game is headed in but I don't feel like this game will reach its full potential until the ability to pilot multiple ships is added along with perhaps a larger variety of ships as the older X games had.

The game is still great fun even though a few parts are a little tedious, but with some great mods this game is great! I do recommend the game although it is complex and may not be enjoyable by all.

I bought the game at initial release and it was a disaster. However, since the recent updates, close to all of the launch bugs have been ironed out and new starting modes make this game incredibly better. This is a difficult game to learn, and you will constantly reference lists and look to the internet for help, much like a space-arma. This is a persistent universe though, and the rewards of sticking with it are greater than you would find in most games.

Great game overall. Was a bit dubious about the game earlier on this year but the recent updates gave me a reason to buy it and give it a go.

Lets start with the good bits. Stunning visuals, great gameplay, imersion at its best and the ships look fantastic.

One big drawback, for example, is its very laggy on low-mid end systems, even turning down to lower resolutions and lowering all graphics settings its just playable. The other thing id like to mention is walking around in station seems to be the most laggy part of the game. Could do with some more optimisation for lower end machines like mine.

All in all though if you like being a kniving entrapaneur, blowing up big and small spaceships or just like to wander around space eating up roids, then this is the game for you.

7/10 (With more optimisation this game would definately hit a 10).

I will not sugar-coat this, X: Rebirth was absolutely terrible at launch, but the reason why I still recommend it is because I think now with all the updates, it has become a decent game. If you don’t want to read the whole thing, then just go to the last paragraph on the bottom.

First of all, let’s consider the price. I think the current price of whooping 50€ is unjustified; it wasn’t justified at launch and it still isn’t justified now. What I would recommend to people thinking about buying this game – wait for the CHRISTMAS SALE. I’m sure XR will be on sale this December, so even if you don’t like the game, you will have not spent too much money on it.

Many people already familiar with previous X games will say XR should have been X4. What you have to consider is that the developers never intended to make X4, they wanted to create a whole different game with different mechanics. The biggest problem here is that they (over)simplified XR to appeal to wider audiences. This is the sole reason why XR does not feel like X4. They reduced the game complexities and I believe that cost them more than they thought it would. Many features were completely stripped from the game; the most debated being able to fly any ship reduced to only one ship in XR. Some features have been added now with patches though, which I find this ridiculous as they should have been in the game from the very start.

As I mentioned before, at launch the game was riddled with bugs, crashes, and whatnot; it was completely game-breaking. But I believe they fixed quite a large amount of those and the game is slowly shaping up into a decent game. For players thinking about getting this game, you should be aware that XR is very sloooow. The developers wanted to make space exploration and economic empire building to be as realistic as possible, so even simple operations like ordering your ship to trade some wares, takes a while. They justify this by saying, “while you’re waiting for the trade to complete, go do / explore something else”. But after a while, this becomes terribly tedious and annoying, especially if you opt for building stations.

Building stations for your trade empire used to be much simpler and faster in previous X games. Now it just takes forever, and to top it off, it takes a vast amount of money and resources. Again probably to make it more realistic. Fleet control is hardly on par with X3, there’s less races, less star systems, trading can be grating at times while you’re waiting for something to happen, travelling times are longer, the plot is not really that great, the interactive menus are badly designed (improved with v 2.50), and the NPCs just suck.

BUT despite all this, I still invested 300+ hours into XR because I enjoy space simulators. The vast space cities they designed are stunning and gorgeous to explore, the universe really does feel alive, capital ships and freighters are also badass and I enjoy capturing and collecting them, watching your stations expand and earn you more money feels good, manoeuvring around stations at high speed looks awesome and your choices can really affect the universe.

Hopefully with the release of XR 3.0, new features/improvements will make the game more enjoyable.

In the end, it’s all a matter of taste. If you enjoy space simulations or you’re a hardcore space gamer, I think XR would be a good game to try. But if you are a casual player not looking for slow and complicated in-depth gaming, then you’re better off playing a space shooter or fast-paced strategy game.

I saved my review for a time when the game was more playable. It indeed has become so. I can finally trade, which was my biggest thing, it took months for egosoft to fix this but things are finally coming together. Stations are still a failure to be profitable without fleets of ships to import and export of your own as relying on the AI to do it will simply eat up your money. Start with a trade fleet, get at least a dozen large cargo holding trade ships, build up a fortune of one too several hundred million (Easier than it sounds). Make one station at a time figure out which would be more profitable in the area of your choice (Supply, demand) set up a fleet just for the station and figure out how many will stabilize it's profits. So on and so Forth. Look up guides and make sure you look up the workshop for mods. Your Empire awaits.

It doesn't matter how many times I try to get into this game, it never works properly for more than an hour before *something* breaks it. Either something I do in game, something that happens outside of my control in game that makes everything stop functioning, a random CTD, a graphical glitch or some game-breaking situation. Considering I played X3TC until I conquered half of the map and had more fleets and production facilities than I could count this game is a MAJOR diappointment. It lacks any sense of progress, and after waiting for it with glee and anticipation, paying £50 for the version that had the soundtrack (the collector editions had sold out) I really feel ripped off. In fact I've never before felt quite so ripped off and shocked as I was with this. Half of the mods people make and release for it are functions that anyone woul d have expected to already be in the game. Nothing about this game even feels like an X game should feel. I appreciate that it was supposed to be a revamp, but to me a revamp should not mean taking the top ten most amazing things from X3, deleting them and replacing them with week-old fish-paste; and that's basically all this is. Do not buy, even if you really really badly want another X game (we all did).

This game had a really bad start. The game was obviously made for a different audience, and was incredibly buggy at that. However, Egosoft has really pulled together in rewriting the game and fixing the mess. The end result is still far from perfect, but so has every X game been. It is a worthwhile game now, even though those looking for X4 will be severely disappointed.

The most fun I had from this game was reading reviews and agreeing with all the flaming that I read. The passionate hate in peoples' reviews is comical but quite frankly justified. Since when did pretty graphics become the starting point for designing a game? It's obvious that most of the time was spent on making the game look pretty, and by the time the devs realized it was time to release the game nothing else was done. In a half-hearted effort some mechanics were hacked into the game, but there's nothing there other than pretty screenshots.

This game has come a long way from initial release. While I expect a fully operational game when paying full price, the developers are consistently putting effort into fixing and improving the game. That's more than can be said about the majority of early starter games which ♥♥♥♥ consumers of their cash. Give the game a revisit.

There is a long list on 2.50 fixes, but for me the increased performace and stabilty has been the most important.

It's good to see ES hasn't abandoned Rebirth and more is on the way!

With 2.50 out, X Rebirth instantly becomes the best game Ive ever played.

Game is perfectly playable, if you give it a chance.
Performance is now good enough (even on my very outdated computer).
Trading is now a very lucrative way of making money, thanks to trade agents.
Shipyards are proper resource sinks for your profits.
+you can turn your head around in cockpit, and there is external view
+you dont need to dock at stations anymore, everything can be done remotely through drones

If you dont mind having only one ship to fly, and wish for a deep empire-building, combat, and trading, get this game now.
(but NOT for the steam store price - do yourself a favor and search online stores in your country for BETTER price)
(if you will need any kind of help, ask on the forums, or ask me)

X Rebirth is certainly NOT X4. That being said, I have enjoyed this game immensely. After reading many of the reviews for this game, I thought I had made a mistake in purchasing it. I will agree, the price is a little high. But what I do not understand is the sheer amount of hate this game has generated.

Sure, it's a little buggy. What X game hasn't been a little buggy? You can't change your shp. Well, you can choose between four cockpit configurations. You have to run around stations to find trade deals. This much is true. But the thing that always made me lose interest in games like this is the lack of immersion. Clicking through menu screens is tedious to me. I WANT to run around the stations and ships. Give me more of that.

The highway system is a little tricky to get used to, but once you figure it out, it is kind of fun. The developers were probably thinking, "let's diversify this experience. Give the gamers more things to do." Instead, it came through as an abandment of the jump drive system. And let's be completely clear about this next point (I've read complaints about this onlne), this game is huge. I've been casually exporing the first area it put me in, and it's taken me several days. You could do nothing more than fly around to station after station looting everything you find and end up loaded with credits a month later--with still more to explore.

Do I recomend this game. Yes, if you like the idea of playing a space sim like X3 but without being a disemobodied voice in a menu screen. And moreover, it would be a reasonable assumption that the people who would work on mods for this game would see potential, or at least have enjoyed the game in the first place. Where are they on these review threads?

Egosoft, I can tell you guys really tried to break the norm and evolve the X franchise into something bigger, and I applaud you. It may not be perfect, but the effort is there. I will support future Egosoft games. Keep up the good work!
