평가

“Always Sometimes Monsters deals in chaos and quantum theories – in every second of our lives, we make choices that forever impact our timelines going forward, dictating whether we keep or lose friends, maintain a job or succeed in our goals. We are the masters of our destinies, Always Sometimes Monsters says – but we can't control other people's lives. That's where it gets tricky.”
4/5 – Joystiq

“It's an earnest look at life under tough economic pressure, at love when things don't go according to plan and at a creative career during its shittiest lows. It has a lot to say, and importantly, it speaks from the heart.”
8/10 – Polygon

“Always Sometimes Monsters isn't the first game to get clever with morality. It's not the first game that's had a few grey areas. It also isn't about either of those. It's about perspective. It's about empathy. It's about who we are and why we do what we do. That narrative is one of contradiction and hypocrisy, because that's what real people are about.”
9/10 – Eurogamer

게임에 대해

Out of money and out of luck you find yourself heart broken and on the verge of collapse. Your landlord's taken the key back, you can't finish your manuscript, and your beloved is marrying someone else. With no choice but to handle whatever life throws at you, you set out on the open road on a mission to win back the love of your life. The story from there is up to you. Can your life be salvaged, or are we always sometimes monsters?

Choice
A story-driven experience focusing on relationships and emotional bonds rather than traditional RPG combat and adventuring. Indecision is your enemy and empathy is your weapon in a quest to earn one last chance to win back the love of your life.

Circumstance
Choose from characters of different gender, race, and sexual preference and live through the common experiences and unique hardships of each based on your selection. NPCs may treat you differently based on your gender, race, or sexual preference opening and closing different paths along the way.

Consequence
Each playthrough is filled with a staggering number of diverging paths that can be discovered through both overt actions and subtle choices in conversation. The journey you experience will be tailored to your personal ethical compass as your decisions both conscious and subconscious change your fate.

Beautiful game design
Amazing story
One of my favorite games of 2015
If you like RPGMaker games then you'll love this one. Not a lot of complex gameplay but you really get attached to the characters and the story itself.
Can't wat for Part 2.

I really do like this game, but even the best end leaves you a bitter taste in your mouth, but I have to say that that is not necessarily a bad thing. Not all stories had to go along with the Happy Ever After.

I played a lot with different characters and approaching, and that one of the things I like the most. There are not a lot of video games where you can play as a LGBT+ character, and here you can. You can choose your character, your partner, and the way the story goes.

In the graphics and gameplay part it is true that fails a little, but that is not the part that caught me the most in a video game. I am thrilled by an argument and the story, and when I can choose how can it can change, even if it's mean that everything it is going to go terribly bad, I cannot ask for anything more.

If a have to give you some advice, I would say to you that you should at least try it out. It is not expensive, especially in sales, and we don't give an opportunity to little indie companies, what are our alternatives? Bugisoft? EAvil?

I don't think I paid for it, but it wouldn't be my sort of thing for 11 bucks and really you make the mistake not shooting the guy. Just a lot of chatter, it's like Leisure Suit Larry minus the jokes.

I think what this game does best is storytelling. In fact, I don't think I really appreciated any other aspect of the game. Some parts are plain tedious or boring.

What made me play this game three times in a row was my desperate need to "get it right this time." I felt like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day. I would start the game determined that if I just made the right choices, my love would take me back. Only to feel the crushing disappointment at the end, and then feel it again.

Until finally, sweet bliss of finally sticking it to that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Sam. Man, that was great. Totally worth the 25 hours it took to finally get it right!!! Awesome game.

Aren't we always sometimes monsters?
In this little pixel-art gem you play the role of a writer who falls in disgrace after the break up with his/her girlfriend/boyfriend.
One day you receive an invitation to your ex's wedding and yeah, you'll have to be there. So your trip starts.
The gameplay is very simple, the big part is to choose between the different selections the story proposes you. Basically it's quite a life simulator, and in my opinion the best way to play is to pick the choices you would pick if it happened in your life. I found fun discover that acting quite like I would have acted in real life would have brought me to a certain ending!
Anyway, crossing the cities you'll have to cross and facing the challenges the game will present you, you can decide to behave good or bad, and the choices you'll make will influence the consequences, which will lead you to different endings: I suggest to save every time there is an important decision to make (there are several save slots so you won't have problems to do this).
Last but not least, this game is also equipped with good humour, arcade games to play in the game itself and a very pleasant soundtrack, and this is always a really positive thing :D

SPOILER
Apparently the only way to reach the good ending is to avoid Sam's death. But I know you also think that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ has to pay, I mean, he/she pretended to be your best friend and then he/she stole your lover and your work, so I think it's fine to choose at the very end of the game to pick "shoot", indeed it's the end and it won't influence nothing else v.v

The good:
- Rich and well-developed world
- Cheap (I got it during a steam sale) - $1.50 for the game and $0.50 for the soundtrack that ruined my ears for the 20 or so hours
- Rob Hoard "I've got enough to eat at home" and James Starling cameo
- Branching story in an RPG Maker game - great for 2014
- Squaring tofus for money is surprisingly relaxing

The meh
- The story - B-movie standard
- The gambling and fight club sequences can get really tedious if you want to make extra cash (then again, maybe that is the point)
- The NPCs are really one-sided
- The worldview of this story paints an overly pessimistic and simplistic picture of corporate greed

The bad
- IS THERE ANY WAY TO TURN DOWN THE SOUND! The soundtrack is nice but is really annoying because it is in every single part of the game, often at INAPPROPRIATE times. Sometimes silence is the best soundtrack. Someone needs to shoot the person in charge of sound (not the composer, mind you) or pay the players back $10,000. It's not that I'm particularly fond of violence, but unfortunately sometimes circumstance makes it necessary. Which brings me to the next point:
- The dialogue is poorly researched and one-sided when representing landlords, corporate fatcats and casino owners. Often the dialogue can get so moralising it warrants so many eye rolls. It often feels that it becomes a mouthpiece of the writer's ideology. CUT DOWN ON THE NARRATION and let the player decide the moral of the story for themselves. SHOW DON'T TELL!
- The ending: You must love your ex or you'll become a bum, and I like the fact that you can get shot and resurrect later to publish your award winning book). So in life, we must never move on from our ex? What if I don't like him/her because they are just as selfish as most people portrayed in this game?
- Hitting the next dialogue often hits the first choice (which led to alot of hair-pulling moments) - perhaps having a confirmation stage would help
- You can't save or load during flashbacks and halfway during dialogues
- Achievements do not get reflected in the Mac version

Vedict: Buy in steam sale, BUT don't get your hopes up - it's in no way as good as To The Moon in terms of engaging the player in storytelling. Get ready for overly preachy and cliched dialogues. However, this game excels in world building and branching story mechanics, which is enough motivation for me to buy the game though.

Dude, this story is amazing. No wonder they won a writing prize.
I'm a fan of RPG and pixel art games so the art for me was totally nice.
In the start it felt like pixel GTA because I had no idea what I was doing, but then I got in the story and woah.
Such great story.
I just finished it and I'm probably playing it again in the future. Because I was told there's multiple endings.

An absolutely beautiful piece of storytelling. Extremely depressing, and engrossing. Choices all feel like ♥♥♥♥, and you will constantly feel like you've been handed an unfair deal. That's the magic of course. Its a gritty, realistic game that both hates convention and loves it. I highly recommend it.

Well literally jsut finished playing this one, gotta say the storyline is amazing, the choices you make really do define how the game ends (won't give away any spoilers) but I will say be careful what you choose and what you do it will all come round near the end with one particular conversation.

The soundtrack is completetly beautiful. really suits the games, the scenes, sets the atmosphere really well.

Didn't really mind the whole complete dialouge after dialouge after dialouge becasue for me it helpeed set what was happening in that particular part of the story.

really enjoyed the fact you have to work your butt off in each city to progress onto the next. money wasnt "easy" to make but it wasnt hard either.

all in all as others have said, minus the ending which was a REALLY big let down, i do highly recommend this game, for $0.99 you can't complain much.

I'd say that the style here is an acquired taste. I kind of hated it to begin with, the way things are done in the beginning seems so backwards. And I'm talking about the prologue and means of character selection, which is kind of counterintuitive. The game itself has a couple of really obnoxious plugs and references to a culture that really doesn't resonate with me. But once you get it going and start fishing, the game becomes more like an interactive novel with some genuine surprises. You can't please everyone, and you'll only meet your downfall for trying. With that said, there's also a lot more than you might think. I don't really like the ending of this game, but the middle was pretty darn satisfying. There's probably a whole lot that I missed out on, but I will give it another look at a later time. Finishing the game can burn you out quite a bit. Not sure I'd pay full price (got it for 99 cent) for it, and I'm not so invested that I would pay full price for the upcoming sequel, either. But if this title is on sale, you're getting well more than the value for your money.

I wanted to like this game. I think it has a lot of cool, innovative ideas. The roleplaying portion is fun, and I love that you can be gay and other characters will acknowledge it, in positive and negative ways. I enjoy the game's sense of humor. The fact that this was made in RPGmaker is impressive in itself.

However, the game itself is kind of a chore. It's mostly about struggling to scrounge up any kind of cash you can, whether it be through doing odd jobs here and there, pawning off random ♥♥♥♥, trying your hand at the lotto or investing in bacon stocks. At first this seemed great and open-ended, but in the end the only reliable way to make cash is really the odd jobs, which take the form of tedious mini-games, if they can be called that. Keeping yourself alive and making enough cash to purchase expensive ♥♥♥♥ing bus tickets to ultimately crash your ex-bae's wedding is basically the crux of the game, with some fun character interactions and quests thrown in there too. But there is so much focus on the least fun part of the game. I get that work is tedious, maybe they wanted to convey that feeling, in which case they succeeded. But they also bring the fun factor way down in doing so.

I nearly gave up when I got to the town where you could literally play rock paper scissors for money. It literally does not get more basic and repetitive than that, folks.

Always Sometimes Monsters is not a bad game, but I honestly don't want to play it anymore, I'm struggling to finish because it is that much of a drag at some points. It's also nowhere near as open as it seems to market itself as, and moderately linear.

Again, not a bad game, but keep all those things in mind before purchasing. I'm 10 hours in and I just want it to end.

Wow, this game really beats you down. Your character's situation starts out already depressing, then you go through many ups and downs throughout the story, but mostly on a downward trajectory lol. In the end, I lost everything, including my ex, and ended up worse off than I was at the beginning. That being said, however, I loved this game.

An amazing mix between a great storytelling Visual Novel and a classic RPG. A true rollercoaster of emotions.

If you're inclined to play a mature game with mature decision-making, I highly recommend Always Sometimes Monsters. The game smartly tests how effectively your choices were: it contains some "dead ends" if they were too bad and the outcome of your choices will influence deeply the final act. It has a very deep and moving plotline for self-reflection and melancholy. A true masterpiece.

Perhaps because in wanting her so bad, I had become something less than human.

I came out here to die.

So here I'm, at your mercy.

What will you do if you have the power to go back and remake every important decision in your life?
Knowing what you already know, will your choice remain the same in the safety of that knowledge?
Or will you be so desperate for change to take a leap of faith only to tumble into the abyss of the unforeseeable?

Review:
This game lets the player explore the quantum theory of alternate timelines, if you have the patience to get past the slow beginning and endure the old school gameplay to realize this game for what it is.

Rarely in our lives do we have complete control even when we believe it to be so. This game is an experiment in faith and morality. Good intentions don't always turn out well, and vice versa.

This isn't a single playthrough game, or you will likely have missed various situations and decisions. Self conflict and curiosity that makes you want to reset your virtual life is why this game is a gem.

[TL:DR]
Single playthrough == Virtual life karma simulator
Multiple playthroughs == Booker Dewitt simulator

I absolutely love this game. It's definitely one of the best games I've played in quite a while. The premise is intriguing, the execution spot-on, and the story just phenomenal. The game was crafted beautifully. There are so many little things to explore and choices to be made. This is definitely a game I wouldn't mind revisiting. Which is a good thing, because I didn't get the good ending during my first playthrough. I will keep trying until I get it, and I'll probably keep playing even after. I really do love this game that much.

I highly recommend this game to anyone who is interested in games where your decisions made a big impact on the story.

Always sometimes monsters is an interesting approach to RPG story telling that touches on harsh adult topics and aspects of life that many take for granted until we stand on our own, and this game leaves you thinking about your own life in the end, unpleasant as it may be.

As the player you will struggle with making money for food, finding places to sleep and working towards your goal, whatever that may be in the end and will be presented many choices as the game progresses that will test your morals.

If you are one of those that are easy to depress, I wouldn't recommend this game, but if you're interested in following a harsh story with heartbreak and drama, check it out, just know what you're getting into and steel yourself.

First things first, Always sometimes Monsters is a serious emotional rollercoaster.
This game is sad and a tragedy, it puts you in such tough situations and throws difficult decisions at you making you think what's going to happen if I do this, what will happen if I say that? I did my best choosing the right decisions and making money when I had too and chasing after my love interest / romantic other but in the end it was all in vein and even though in my ending we both had a happy-ish ending after that the happiness quickly faded away. Honestly this game is quite slow paced at first and if you rush things it won't do you much good because you have to do many things carefully to make sure things turn out the way you want. Always sometimes Monsters have various and many endings but sadly my first ending wasn't the happy one and I ended forever alone.

I enjoyed this game and it made me sad, happy and anxious to what events were to come due to the choices I made.
I would recommend this game to those who have the time to spare to play this game.

Nice story-driven game in the same style as To the Moon. But it's a bit longer. Played about 10 hours without replaying it.
Too bad you have to read every dialog yourself, gets a bit exhausting after a while.
There a lot of choices which all affects your story. But there is no false choice, only easy or hard, good or evil.

Some parts are annoying, like the boxing. You have to sacrifice yourself to the RNG-Gods.

But overall, a very nice, entertaining game.

I only recommend this for it's story, which is somewhat meandering but still interesting; as a game, I would not recommend this. Mostly because it is too rigid about what you have to do to get the best ending possible and far too much of it is padded out by tedium and random chance.

Sprite work is charming and the music is decent, but if the same team makes another game similar, could you add a volume control, please?

Well, didn't expect this much fun when I bought this.

The idea of this game is good - to induce self-reflection, analysing your own actions and choices and try to get you to think about yourself as a person. I think in this, it succeeds somewhat. But the execution leaves something to be desired. I think there are a few times in the game where it tries to go 'philosophical' on you, but it feels forced and therefore not particularly intelligent. And, although I've only played through once, it seems like a lot of the stuff you do doesn't really matter in the end. Though to some degree, one could say that the fact that it makes you think about the choices you made is worthy of praise. It's not bad for a first attempt. There are mistakes littered throughout the world, but for me that was part of its charm. There's a certain feeling of sincerity that can only be achieved by a small team writing about life.

It's certainly a game that deserves attention. The concept is great and the story compelling. It's pretty cheap and I would say worth the asking price for the amount of enjoyment it brings. However the execution is wanting. Therefore. not everyone will like it. Some typical gamers will flat out hate it. But if you’re not typical, and if story matters to you more than twitch reflex, then by all means buy this game.

I really really wanted to like this game. I did. I got it, I was super interested in it. It helped my attention so well. . . Until the ending. I know others have stated it but I absolutely loath the ending. Hands down, I really enjoyed this game until you got near the end. I enjoyed going through the turmoil with my character, watching them grow as a person, seeing the effects of the choices I made. . . But the ending is such a slap in the face.

Spoiler alert for anyone wishing to play the game. Do not read beyond this point:

So I pick my character, I have my love interest, I lose my love interest and my life spirals out of my hands. Not a bad start to a game. It was definitely unique so I did enjoy that aspect of the game. Then I played on and I found myself getting immersed. My character gets a job at an advertising place, while there though I save a young man from commiting suicide simply by being honest and not judging someone I don't even know. Kudos to you game developers. I liked this.

I get to the next time. I continue helping people from a transgender man to a hungry young boy to even my "friend's" marriage all while being reminded of my choices and what to do when I meet up with my ex.

I think hands down my favorite level is with my 'uncle' whose now a pastor. How finding out that his love for me as his own child turned his life around and how he wanted to be a better man. I dunno. I really liked this part. I also liked the part where he asked me what I wanted to do. Was it to reconsile with my ex. Was I going to finally let go? What was I doing. . . Now at this point in the story my motiviation had gone from 'get back with your ex' to possibly letting them go (In my eyes the relationship wasn't that good if it ended in the direction it did) and to make a better start.

and then Vegas/Ending. . . The game PUNISHES you for not going with your ex. It really does. I don't care what anyone says. I played through it and even though I had a high compatibility with my ex I decided to let them go on with their life and Bam. SHot in the head as a hobo. WTF?! Seriously. I was finally making amends with an old friend, seeing them marry my ex and I get shot in the head as a hobo cause I couldn't get over it?! FLIPPITY DO DAH AH! I hated that. I absolutely hated that. So I reload and interupt the wedding and profess my love. Get accepted, undo everything I had done (Making amends, learning to stand on my own two feet) and even that ending wasn't really rewarding. I just. . . I hated the ending so much. I still do. It's been months since I last played it but that ending has stayed so vividly in my mind because of how much I had enjoyed the first 2/3's of the game until the end.

That's basically the end of my rant. If they've updated the endings I may give the game another shot but as of right now, no. I regret owning this game and that's really sad for me to say as again I did enjoy a good chunk of it.

The very definition of "Punishing" versus challenging gameplay. The good ending is nigh impossible to get on your first play through, since so many of the damn mechanics of this game are hidden from the player.

That, in and of itself, could actually be palatable, hell, even desirable, if this game didn't leave a bad taste in your mouth.

It's a story at the attempt of redemption. You're out to get the one who got away back before they can marry another, which already causes a schism betwixt me and the character. I had no desire to get back with my ex, they, in the story, left me for a stupid and shallow reason. And I couldn't just say "♥♥♥♥ 'em" and live my own life, since it becomes obvious fairly quickly that the only way for your character to move on with their life is to break up this wedding.

This game has some really cool potential for story-telling moments, and their system of having the player make choices they didn't even know they had could be pretty cool, but the execution all relies on the desire to see the story through to the end, and I can honestly say that it didn't reel me in. I had no desire to finish this game, and I highly recommend anyone and everyone skip this title.

There are only two RPG Maker games of the dozens I've sampled from various bundles that weren't complete garbage: this and Memories of a Vagabond. This isn't a great game, but on the RPG Maker curve it's a masterpiece.

I didn't expect a lot from this game but I'm definitely glad I gave it a playthrough. It's a somewhat slice-of-life type video game where every decision you make alters what's happening. Does it change the story down the line? I haven't replayed it to find out but it at least gives the illusion that it will (TIP: Abuse the save option and save slots, you'll need it). The script is very neutral yet despite that I've had one decision screw me over (I already "finished" the game thanks to one decision). Overall, I loved the story and the idea that every decision you make can basically end the story for you and not just try and try again without any consequence... unless you reload your saves of course.
