“Always Sometimes Monsters deals in chaos and quantum theories – in every second of our lives, we make choices that forever impact our timelines going forward, dictating whether we keep or lose friends, maintain a job or succeed in our goals. We are the masters of our destinies, Always Sometimes Monsters says – but we can't control other people's lives. That's where it gets tricky.”
4/5 – Joystiq

“It's an earnest look at life under tough economic pressure, at love when things don't go according to plan and at a creative career during its shittiest lows. It has a lot to say, and importantly, it speaks from the heart.”
8/10 – Polygon

“Always Sometimes Monsters isn't the first game to get clever with morality. It's not the first game that's had a few grey areas. It also isn't about either of those. It's about perspective. It's about empathy. It's about who we are and why we do what we do. That narrative is one of contradiction and hypocrisy, because that's what real people are about.”
9/10 – Eurogamer

Acerca de este juego

Out of money and out of luck you find yourself heart broken and on the verge of collapse. Your landlord's taken the key back, you can't finish your manuscript, and your beloved is marrying someone else. With no choice but to handle whatever life throws at you, you set out on the open road on a mission to win back the love of your life. The story from there is up to you. Can your life be salvaged, or are we always sometimes monsters?

Choice
A story-driven experience focusing on relationships and emotional bonds rather than traditional RPG combat and adventuring. Indecision is your enemy and empathy is your weapon in a quest to earn one last chance to win back the love of your life.

Circumstance
Choose from characters of different gender, race, and sexual preference and live through the common experiences and unique hardships of each based on your selection. NPCs may treat you differently based on your gender, race, or sexual preference opening and closing different paths along the way.

Consequence
Each playthrough is filled with a staggering number of diverging paths that can be discovered through both overt actions and subtle choices in conversation. The journey you experience will be tailored to your personal ethical compass as your decisions both conscious and subconscious change your fate.

Always Sometimes Monsters is a game that I thought at the beginning had a lot of potential given its promise of morally complex situations. However, after watching someone else's playthrough and playing my own, I realized that the game is far more linear than it lets on, playing out more like a visual novel with a superfluous stamina mechanic.

You play a person who, a year after a break-up, is still despondent and decides to travel across country -- through whatever means possible -- in order to chase their ex. The love interest you're pursuing is selfish, shallow, fickle, and absolutely unhealthy for you. Like other reviewers, for all this game's hooting about choices, I was disappointed and annoyed that there was no option to be an adult and simply move on from my ex.

The drama of decision making is supposed to come in what you're willing to do in order to get the money to travel from place to place, but near the end of the game, there's a casino which lets you win large amounts of money. I won $10,000 and was able to pay off Sam's gambling debt with no problems, thus making the entire struggle for money throughout the game seem rather pointless.

The Dubstown segment is probably the game's strongest part, and the narrative becomes progressively weaker and less interesting afterwards. Story-based games live or die on the strength of their writing, and Always Sometimes Monsters is no exception. There were sparks of interest here and there, and it was certainly an ambitious concept, but for the most part, the writing is just not to the level it should have been for the ideas it was wrestling with. The author insertions were ridiculous and off-putting. I can't recommend this game.

I said I'd get the elderly some firewood so that they wouldn't have to argue if bacon can't go well without eggs or if eggs couldn't be served without bacon for breakfast.

I ended up meeting an old friend instead and when I came back with firewood, it was already afternoon.

This game will never get old to me. Why? Because there are so many different routes you can take your character with multiple endings. I absolutely love games with a butterfly effect because they are worth every single penny since its not a "One and Done" type of game. You can be a girl, guy, straight, gay, get the good ending or loose the lover; the list goes on. Its simple and complicated with a captivating storyline that makes it difficult to stop. Definitely recommend.

I got interested in playing this game after I read the summary. "Set out on a cross-country journey to win back the love of your life and endure the hardship of making story-defining choices that affect your life and the lives of those around you."
It sounded like it would be an epic adventure with an amazing story.

But then I actually played the game and it was a total waste of 11 hours.

I kept on pushing through this game and hoping the story become more engaging, but it was a constant snorefest. The plot is very predictable and filled with meaningless choices that have no reel impact towards the plot or its ending. The different endings are all practically the same but with minor tweaks.

Its gameplay isnt any better. It constantly feels very slow and tedious, even for a product of an RPGmaker.

Try play this one without any spoilers and make up your own mind about the characters. Everyone experiences things a little differently. Great game. Would eat stale nachos again.

Overall a solid enough experience.

The ending is dumb as ♥♥♥♥, but that's all part of the game I suppose.

Full disclosure: I didn't get very far in this game.
I really wanted to like it. Everything I had heard about the game made it sound like a pretty interesting storytelling experiment. Unfortunately, the gameplay really drags this game down.

Gameplay-wise, this thing is a grind. You're always performing odd jobs to gather the requisite money to reach your next goal. As I said, I didn't get very far into this game, but after playing through two days where I had to go do odd jobs to get money to attain my objectives, I had really had enough. Jobs are done via simple mini-games that just aren't any fun. Part of the issue is just the limitations of RPG maker, but honestly, I would have taken an option to just get a random result from the jobs rather than play them. A coat check minigame particularly grated on me.

As far as story goes, I had high expectations. I'd heard lots of praise of the mature storytelling and complex themes of morality and agency. What I've seen so far was fine, I guess, but pretty much nothing is done to establish your character as someone you would want to root for or like. I realize that the point of the game isn't to be a hero, it's to show a life spiralling out of control, how circumstances can make anyone into a monster. But nothing of real substance is established about the main character before the slide, which for me diminished the emotional impact of the story and the choices. This is not to say the story is bad. It is a cut above the writing in a lot of games, but it just wasn't enough for me to get over the gameplay.

I may come back to this game at some point just to see how things turn out, but so far, it's a slog.

Verdict: Go read some Dostoevsky instead.

one of the most profound and existential expierences ive ever had.....with the kind of choices and decisions shaping a story and making you question both what your seeing in game and your own morals as a person, this game destroys and opens you mentally. Im not even finished yet but i feel like ive lived a seperate life and made horrible decisions to get to where i am, just like real life...

because in the end, when given the illusion of free will...we're Always Sometimes Monsters....

also heard i can go on a killing rampage.... so thats cool too :P.... but after the horrors youve done already would it be worth it?

tl:dr : this game is amazng and a complete and total MindF**k!!!

A mature story that deals with choice, and illusion thereof. Is life deterministic? Do we have control over our destiny?

There aren't a ton of outcomes in this game, but it still takes your choice into account enough to make an enjoyable customed experience. You must be aware that this game is HIGHLY narrative-driven; but if that's what you're into, go ahead. It's one of the rare serious story well executed in a game. You will be homeless, you will have to do mundane work, you will have to sustain yourself, and so on. It might be repellent for some, but if you're not only looking for "pure fun" in games, and if you want to live a unique and, let me repeat it, mature experience, this game is incredible and deserve your attention.

Honestly, I wasn't as impressed as I thought it would be. I thought it was going to be a thought rendering story filled with twists and turns but it didn't live up to that. It was only a few dollars for an rpg maker esc kind of game. In the end it just wasn't worth it. I still played it through and it was a decent enough game for a few bucks. Still, the ending was far to obvious as was the story itself. To many times I was just grinding to do something to make money and I don't think being evil or good really mattered at all. I don't think the decisions made the main character monsterous at all. Still, other people enjoy it and think the ending was gut renching. Me, I thought the ending was too predictable. It is, what it is and I'll always be a fan of Devolver, but I just wasn't that crazy about this.

I put my hope high at first. that I would experienced a rich story game and had me lots of moral lesson, like butterfly-effect-movie-feel, where it doesnt matter what you choose there're times you become a monster. But instead:

-the game is over if you pick wrong choices.
-ridiculous story, spy, a boxing dog, mafia, fast and furious, fishing kid, packing weeds, etc.
-empty towns.
-walk too much.
-pointless fatigue n' food variant. I only bought barnstormer the entire game. no drink. no smoke.
-boring. I left the game open sleeping alot.
-tedious money grinding.
-I moved 100 boxes in the warehouse.
-I moved 100 boxes in the warehouse!
-why?! IDK noone told me to stop! or told me I've done a great job moving all those boxes and you can stop if you want!
-do you know how it feels? try it and I bet you would tumbdown this game also.
-some of h-games was more entertaining than this game.
-try huniepop if you dont believe me or everlasting love, a free gem.
-you need to patch it first tho to unlock the h-content.
-last, I don't even think all bad decisions made the main character any monsterous at all.

I dont want to be harsh, but tbh the game is basically just a collection of bad mini games with bad story. sorry.

recommendation : buy the game while on sale.

Story was quite boring and didn´t really provide much variety.
Wasn´t interessted in the Ex-Story. First choise in the game was to shoot the unknown person.
Should have stayed there. Seems like if you don´try to get your ex back, you will always get a bad ending.
Was a "Im adult and can continue my life without my ex" too much for an ending ?
