About This Game

The Graveyard is a very short computer game. You play an old lady who visits a graveyard. You walk around, sit on a bench and listen to a song. It's more like an explorable painting than an actual game. An experiment with poetry and storytelling but without words.

Buying the full version of The Graveyard adds only one feature, the possibility of death. The full version of the game is exactly the same as the trial, except, every time you play she may die.

Short artgame, but perhaps too short to recommend. Also the regular price is $5 which is WAY too high for a 12 minute game.

This is an little artistic program, it could'nt be classed as a game.

Pros
- Good animation
- Good sound effects of the wind & Trees
- Runs at 230-240 FPS on a good graphics card (not that it needs to)

Cons
- No way to quite back to windows, have to Alttab then right click close
- Trees are poor, 5 or 6 flat planes layered over each over which rotate. Sprites would have been better.

I cannot make it to the end as I got stuck on the bench. The lady refuses to lift her head and get up.

I really wanted the reviews of this game to be wrong. They weren't. Literally all there is to do is walk your character to a bench, listen to a song, and if you haven't died, walk back out. You can't explore anywhere else and you have to manually close the game program if you die. I don't know what the developers were trying to say, if anything, and I found it a dull and tedious experience trying to wrench gameplay out of this. Disappointing.

Since years now I'm trying to make myself feel better about having wasted money on this, but I simply cannot lie to myself.
What you're paying for here is not a game in any way (it's not even a walking simulator because you just walk over to a bench and that's it), nor some kind of artsy experience that gets you thinking or makes you say "What a nice looking game!".
The only thing you are paying for here is a song, one single song while you watch an old lady die, and while I do like it (though it's far from great), it is not what I wanted to buy.
I never even wrote reviews until this... thing... but I had to write this now to just say: There is really no reason for you to buy this.
You can get better things with the money; you can go out and have some ice cream or buy a flower and give it to the love of your life or just buy an actually good indie game, but you don't have to do this to yourself.
Just stay away from whatever the hell this is supposed to be.

Basically about how listening to bad music can kill you. Not really a game. You can literally beat it in 2 minutes. Definitely not worth five bucks.

I think it's supposed to be artistic, but they kinda fail at making you feel anything about death...
If she were to go to a gravestone, and die there. I think there would be more emotional connection.
The way it plays out now is a woman walks into the graveyard for no apparent reason. And has a heart attack on the bench.

P.S.
People don't just violently flop over. Usually they get tired and just go to sleep.

I enjoyed this game; this experiment of poetry and storytelling without words was successful, though very short. My guess is that this developer intends to make a full-length game some day. If so, I hope it is expanding on the same idea.

£4 for a likely chance of seeing an elderly woman die on a bench, listening to a song about her dead husband... k

...but seriously just watch a video on it, there's nothing in this game that you can't get out of a video.

The only reason why I would ever recommend this sort of game is purely for the wonderful threads and screenshots it has given over the years. However, I must disclose that I had gotten this “gem” from a sale of only $.99, so please don’t go after me from the terrible loss of $4.99 (in my location).

Only that sort of price is meant for buying yet another pointless DLC bundle in a game you’ll most likely use one or two of the twenty outfits it provides. Sorry, I still have another game in my mind before typing this all this up, I mean seriously why do I always do this? I see it go up on sale, and even though I already know I have that game uninstalled since I’ve beaten it, I still drag out my phone and check out that sweat new leather chap Paul sent me by mistake. I know he doesn’t know me, but I still hold on to them for safe keeping, knowing the waitress is still stressing from her new job. I tap my fingers on the table a few times, hoping for my meal to grow up enough to leave the house, and never look back on what I taught them.

Here's the entire experience you will have if you play The Graveyard: You hold "W" until the old lady limps her way to the bench in the middle of the graveyard, you'll see trees that are one giant flat picture of leaves, absolutely no 3-D quality to them, then you turn around and sit down, you listen to the ENTIRETY of some depressing German song about dying, and the old lady will probably die during this song, and then you have to minimize and right-click close the game, or use task manager. If you're lucky enough and she doesn't die, you walk back up the path you walked down, leave the graveyard and you're done.

Either way the game ends up going, it's extremely dull and I honestly feel sorry for anyone that has PAID for this. I can't believe it's actually $4.99, when I saw it in my library and even until recently I thought it was a free artsy indie game (like that's been becoming so popular nowadays), and honestly I love artsy indie games, but this one has literally nothing to show for. The graphics aren't even that good, which are the only stimulation you receive throughout your 10 minutes playing The Graveyard. So without good graphics, basically no gameplay, and a song that most people won't even like (which takes up half of the playtime), The Graveyard is just as boring as a graveyard. In fact, I'd rather actually go sit on a bench in a graveyard than play this game, because that way I'd at least get some fresh air.

3.1/10

This is barely a game. It is more akin to project a professor assigns to his/her class where they must explore a central mechanic/theme within a confined experience. It would probably get a good grade as a class project but as a game this is an absolute waste of money. There are better things you can do with the cash that is required to buy this game and the ~10 minutes (at most) it takes to play it.

If someone gifts this to you, they probably hate you.

The dev's description on the store pretty much tells it all up front. Grandma walks. Grandma sits. Music plays. Maybe you'll walk out of the park back to the traffic of the street, or (only if you actually paid for this and don't just play the demo version) maybe grandma dies on the bench.

I keep looking forward to when I'll finally connect with ToT and be entertained by their work, but this is not it. Really this only looks like a demo while working on animation cycles or basic engine functions at the start of a project, not actual release material. Didn't mind the song (some ppl seem to hate it) but the whole thing doesn't come together to make me experience something -- anything.

Skip it.

So this game is quite short and it seems more like an art demo rather than an actual game. Basically you walk the old woman to the bench and she might die. Not the most fun game in the world, but at the same time it's something you could play in case you need a break between playing regular games.

I will recommend this game, not because it's good (or that it's worth the money, I didn't pay full price because I got it in the Tale of Tales Collection bundle when it was on sale), but because it's something unusual and that even if it's short it kinda describes life. Short but slow at the same time and in the end you die.

Pro bro gaymen tip: if you stay more than 60 minutes in the same spot a hellish Rick Astley and Pelvis Presley will emerge from a grave while a cybernetic Robo-Adolf Hitler will teleport by your side pulling you into a time-traveling dumpster that will take you to the year of 3651 where you will defend earth and fight hoards of diaper wearing devil babies. THERE is where the real game begins. Its trouble in diaper town, and this time grandma is taking no prisoners.

These guys are seriously charging $5 for this garbage? When you look at this store page, you're not watching a trailer. That's a full walkthrough, because that's literally all you can do. You walk in a straight line, sit on a bench, listen to a song with subtitles on, and walk the f**k out. Game over.

Yet despite how small this game is (at 47 Mb), they still couldn't even make it run properly. It skip and jitters almost constantly, and it's not just me. You can even see it in their "trailer". Not to mention the fact that when I played it, the old woman's animations glitched and I was unable to get up from the bench (or so I thought. Turns out that spending $5 let's the old lady kick the bucket while sitting on the bench). How f*****g incompetent do you have to be to make a game (and I'm being generous by calling it that) that's only 5 f*****g minutes long and still have it run like garbage and experience glitches? I saw the flat 2d tree decals disappear in fron of my eyes multiple times, and the shadows appear to be doing something which can only be described as "sh*****g themselves".

I'm so happy that this was gifted to me as a joke because if I had paid even a penny for this pretentious mound of dog s**t, I probably would have shot somebody. I can understand attempting to make an artistic statement with a game but there's nothing here to begin with. The only emotion this envoked was confusion. And not at anything that I played, I was just confused as to how the hell this got released.

I never thought that I would look at a game and genuinely regret wasting time on it, but congratulations "Tale of Tales", you did it.

I was in a graveyard just like the one depicted in this game only a couple of years ago. There was even an old woman limping slowly up the pathway to a bench. I pushed her over, laughed and ran away but, having played this game, I think if the same situation occurs again in the future I'll simply sing a gibberish song and try to understand her point of view instead.

Games can be so life-changing.

It was all very tragic. By all accounts, grandma went to the cemetary, sat down on a park bench to rest her aching bones, and while listening to a terrible song about the deaths of many other people played by somebody she never really saw, she died....presumably the terrible song actually did her in.

2/10

If somehow her head gets lopped off later on, I will up the score a bit.

p.s. Just play the demo...it is exactly the same game except grandma cant actually die...and the demo is free, which is just the right price for this game.

The Graveyard is quite possibly the simplest game I have ever played. You play as an elderly lady in a graveyard and your only possible action is to walk forwards until you reach a bench and sit down. A song then plays for a few minutes and you either get up before the song ends or you remain and quietly die. That is the entire game.

Interestingly enough, for a game that has absolutely no gameplay The Graveyard actually has a gamebreaking bug. If you remain seated during the song and die you will be forced to use ALT-F4 to end the game as the only real way to exit is to get up before the song ends.

Poetry, Art, Experience. I do like that there are game developers out there that are experimenting with new things but charging gullible consumers money to play, what is essentially a postcard where you have to press the forward key for a few seconds to see it all, is just dishonest and greedy.

This is not a game, some might consider it art. I consider it a money grab.
