Live Development Stream Tonight!!

Its THURSDAY!!! :D which means we will be live on Twitch at 8pm CDT to show you the latest progress on the random generation and answer any questions you have! :)

RANDOM GENERATION UPDATE:
Chris tested a final "rough draft" of the random generation last night. Picture. Just like in school, a rough draft is due one week before the final draft.

What needs work:

  • Player Controller. This one is huge. It's going to take feedback from you to get this working correctly so Robbe may feel a little weird when the random gen goes live.
  • Teleports. Hollie will be scripting the teleports today!
  • Bad Guys. Hollie will be adding a few more variants of the bad guys. The will mostly look the same with different behaviours, but new bad guys will be added as assets are available :D
  • Animations. This is on Chris' radar and will be tackled tomorrow.
  • Bosses. While the Bad Guys are easy, the bosses might take a bit more work. We want to get them right and have each one be formidable. The random generation will most likely launch without them.
  • New story arcs. We would like to add more story arcs with the bosses. Collecting memories will occur after a boss has been defeated (this was an original design concept).

We'll keep you updated as we take items off (and add new ones) to the list! :D See you on the live stream!!

Imagine Me was released to Steam Early Access while still in early Alpha development. The idea was to build and shape Imagine Me with the Steam Community. Each comment, suggestion, review, and feedback has been a heavily weighted force in development decisions and key features of the game have already been re-written as a result of community feedback. Dungeons are filled with traps, secrets, and hidden collectibles in this non-linear story of conquering fears and finding yourself. Battle shadowed bosses, find keys, and discover the next room.

I've played a few different early access titles, and this so far is probably the worst. The game is as simple as they come. It is a platformer, where you run left and right, and jump. That is the entirety of your move set. The levels consist of 10 "tutorial" stages, and randomly generated stages. The stages are all the size of a single screen. The graphics are pretty simple, with mostly different shades of green being represented, and some decent but not impressive lighting effects in some of the tutorial stages.

I have a couple of gripes. First, the randomly generated stages. I tried and tried and tried to figure out some of them, but it appears that the way the stages are generated, roughly 75% of them are not improbable to beat, but no, they are impossible to beat. How so? The placement of the exit doors. And it seems this section of the level is recycle through a good deal of the randomly generated levels. There are about 3 variations where it is impossible to navigate the pitfalls and spikes, since you can only jump once before you land again. I am not sure how the developers did not notice this when testing.

Secondly, this seems to be a very small project. I can understand the pacing of development for more ambitious projects, like Starbound, Starforge, Paranormal, etc.. These games are more complex. They will take time. What I am seeing here looks like a game that could be completed over a short period of time. This game has been out nearly a month and a half on Steam, and yet we have a broken level generating system, and only 10 extremely small levels? 10 levels which can be completed in about 10-20 seconds each also, taking your time. That is not even an exaggeration.

Third gripe. The price. Granted, I was lucky to get this game via a bundle. I can not fathom actually paying the asking price of $9.99 for this. I know fully well that this is an early access game. But there should still be some standards. At this point, I can not fully recommend this to anyone at the current asking price. There are far better early access games out there worth your attention. This is just another case of something slipping through the cracks that Valve really needs to put a seal on.

EARLY ACCESS REVIEW:

I wish I could Imagine a better game..

Imagine me is just one simple platformer. The concept looks nice I guess, but there aren't any interesting new gameplay elements. This makes the game flat.

The art style probably is the only good thing from this game. It's not new or mind-blowing, but looks neat at least.

Everything else is a huge mess: the controls are super weird, you never understand when you're gonna jump high or when you're gonna jump IN THE HEIGHT YOU WANT.
The levels are super easy. Really, no effort. Looks like a flash game from the early 2000s.

9€ for this is a scam. I only have it 'cause I got a free steam key for it. And I beat all the levels in less than 20 minutes.
For now, don't bother spending on it even on a big sale. Wait to see if the game gets any better with the time.

Final Rating: 3.5/10

It has nothing to offer. Literally nothing. Except tons of achievement for just opening the game.

I got this game through a bundle, otherwise I don't recommend spending money on it, yet.
What you see is what you get. Looks and feels like programmed in an 48h programming contest.
The music is nice, true... and a nice story.

But from the game mechanics perspective it's just a copy of a copy ... With a level design like this you can browse steam and will find lots of quality platformer much more worth the dime.
So far no fun :(

I want to point out the above review was made with an old version. The game developers are intensively working on polishing and adding new features. If you're an hardcore fan of platformers I would recommend imagine me and say "good luck" because you might enrage a little! I am changing this review in good faith seeing the developing team is actually actively working on making a better game.
