You can now play Crypt of the NecroDancer using our epic new OST remixes from Virt and Girlfriend Records! Just go to the in-game options menu and select "CHANGE SOUNDTRACK" to assign "VIRT" or "GIRLFRIEND RECORDS" to your character of choice. Virt, the composer of the amazing soundtrack for Shovel Knight, has created a gorgeous "retro freestyle" soundtrack for us, while Girlfriend Records have delivered a pulse pounding synthwave OST.

This free update also includes localizations for Russian and Brazilian Portuguese, with more localizations on the way!

Finally, we've been listening to your feedback, and have corrected a number of issues that you've reported. Here's the complete changelog for v1.24:

This game is easily my favorite game of 2016. The soundtrack is amazing which is important since you'll be using the audio cues for movement. When buying the game, I assumed I would want to play with my own mp3s. That is absolutely not the case (I cannot stress enough how well crafted the music is). The four zone bosses are awesome and unique with their own soundtrack that matches their theme. The difficulty curve is perfect. Once you start to master a zone, you move to the next zone and are immediately given a healthy dose of humility as the basic enemies brutalize you and it's time to learn brand new enemy patterns all over again. Because of the diamond upgrade system you don't feel bad for dying and it keeps the items you find in chests less complex until you master them and are ready for shiny new spells/weapons/stuff. Because the levels are random, they never get boring or predictable. And here's the real kicker. Each different character you unlock has a different playstyle which changes how you play the levels completely. I recently found out that some characters have different remixes of the standard songs too which is amazing.

Honestly, I cannot recommend this game enough. If you enjoy a challange and like dungeon exploration games that require you to think rather than level stats, this game is for you.

I really do like this game, but I wish there was some way to make it easier or have more health. Its a good concept and has lovely art and music, but its just so damn hard that I feel like I cant get any where.

It’s a fun concept. I wouldn’t want to play it for hours at a time, but it’s good for short, small bursts.

Pros:
  • Can add your own music (I put it to “Thriller” and “Staying Alive” and it was awesome)
  • Varied enemies that move in their own patterns
  • Each dungeon is randomly created, so it’s mostly new every run
  • Lots of extras to spend your diamonds on, from unlocking how to fight a certain creature, to better items to find in chests and even starting the dungeon with equipment

Cons:
  • You can’t try to save up diamonds to buy things. Once you go back into the dungeon, all diamonds disappear
  • Hearing the same songs over and over can get tiring in one sitting

Music is excellent, sound design in general really gives the action a lot of punch and makes the player feel like they can succeed despite the challenging gameplay, which can be doled out in may forms depending on the level, enemy or character the player is up against or playing as. Also, the plot never gets in the way like I thought it might, and its pretty interesting by itself. Great game, as you can probably tell by its reviews.

Ultimately, the question that matters most is:

Is Crypt of the necrodancer enjoyable for me?
As with all games, not everyone will enjoy this. In fact, even a rouge-like lover might not like this due to it's vastly different playstyle.

The biggest turnoff that could ruin one's enjoyment is that the game is largely trial and error. There is almost zero chance of recovering from a mistake in a boss fight and this will end your run. While common in rougelikes, the bosses in this game are unforgiving. Any new enemy you encounter is and will (probably) kill you. It is nigh impossible to complete the game without knowing how to deal with them.

Fortunately, there is a practice dungeon that allows you to figure out how to deal with these obstacles. That said, (your experience) how frustrating this game gets depend whether or not you choose and have the patience to use this feature.

Spend an hour or two practising against all mini-boss/bosses should you get this game. There are other minor qualms about the game but overall, it was a great experience and the design of certain enemies are ingenious.

Note: There is a character (Bard) that would make the game much easier due to the removal of time pressure imposed by the rhythms and changes the game into a turn-based strategic one but the point above stands firm. Because this removes a core element of the game (the rhythimic pressure), it becomes just another rouge adventure and you will not be playing the same game that is advertised.

The game itself is fairly short and is broken into four (4x4) zones and there is a notable difficulty spike in the latter zones. The approach to beating each level is vastly different.
The upside? You are allowed to skip zones after beating them once.

Zone 1 and 2 allows you to take things slow. -Kiting-
Zone 3 forces you to manage and balance the different skill sets the enemies have and take the pre-emptive strike before you are swarmed. (Bad RNG can happen in this zone so be prepared for frustration.)
Zone 4 requires fast planning and twitchy reflexes.

Shuffle and boogie to da beat like your bootie in da heat dancing cha-cha
in the crypt. And here we go! Forward backward rock-step, side together side
rock-step~

Conclusion
Great game, not for everyone. If you have twitchy reflexes, patience practising, like strategy (more so chess as opposed to RTS) and rouge-like games, this is the game for
you!

Otherwise, grab the game on sale for a taste of this unique masochistic hybrid.

A fantastic game where every single move must be calculated by the player. Do you use the whip to try and reach around corners or do you bring along the bow so that you can reach far off enemies, believe me, these are vital things to consider because the wrong decision can cost you the run. This game was definitely worth every single cent.

If you don't like funky beats, singing killer shopkeepers or skeletons that wiggle their hip bones to the beat then this might not be the game for you.
If you do however like all of those things and more then I HIGHLY recommend this matserpiece.

Incredibly charming indie game with a very unique twist on the classic dungeon crawler genre. Can take an extensive amount of practice to get used to, and can be frustrating to try and beat, but is well worth the effort you put in.

Soundtrack is amazing, as expected for Danny Baranowsky, who also worked on the Binding of Isaac and Super Meat Boy OSTs.

Would highly recommend this to anybody willing to try something new.
